Fall ’07 is all about the proper woman in hats and gloves

By Andrea Thatcher on September 5th, 2007

marc%20jacobs.jpgOn fall runways from Marc Jacobs to Proenza Schouler, long gone were the little-girl looks and grungy street wear of past seasons, instead, this fall, women are women. Or really, women are women from the 1920s to 1940s–in hats and gloves, with defined waists. There was Gatsby-esque cloche hats at Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs, and bucket styles at MaxAzria and Abaeté. Gloves ranged in length from wrist to elbow, some even fingerless, in a variety of colors…

Rolling into fall with a Burberry plaid duffel

By Andrea Thatcher on September 5th, 2007

BurberryDuffel.jpg
Roling into fall season with a Burberry plaid duffle bag means you’ll stay organized and looking sharp, regardless of the brisk weather ahead.
This PVC number is designed to carry everything you need for an afternoon about town. Two cell phone pockets means there’s plenty of space for the PDA and iPod, and adjustable side straps make it simple to expand the size–what better way to stash your pair of Louboutin’s for those after-work plans? With rolled handles and snappy detailing, this one’s a casual, but chic accessory that provides yet another excuse to flaunt some Burberry print.

Paulo Melim Andersson brings Chloé in a new, tougher direction

By Andrea Thatcher on September 5th, 2007

Chloe%20zipper%20dress.jpg
“She’s angry, but funny-angry,” said Paulo Melim Andersson of the girl he imagined while designing his first collection for Chloé. “A girl who steals from her mother. I want this to be young-young, with no tricks. Clean, but not minimal.” Melim Andersson, formerly of Marni, brought the label in a daring new direction with his fall line. Gone were the feminine, floating dresses from Phoebe Philo’s time at Chloé. Now girls in combat boots dressed in black with pops of orange and patent leather stomped down the runway. The new Chloé is tougher, darker, more downtown New York. The dress above appeared on several trend-watch lists, making exposed zippers a coveted item for fall. Now the industry waits to see what Melim Andersson does next with the popular label.

New York Fashion Week: Form

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

Form%20Show.jpg

Fashionistas frightened by the return to more structured fashions for fall can breathe a sigh of relief come spring. And that breath will be easier to take since their diaphragm will once more be released from high-waisted pants and slim, constricting pencil skirts. Spring continued to be a season of voluminous, flowy tunics-cum-dresses, but in a really fresh, modern silhouette at the Form fashion show at The Yard and Gallery at the Soho Grand. While the shapes were innovative, the fabrics and textures were a bit one-note and it would have been nice to see a bit more variety. The ethereal silvery-ivory-white might have been even more powerful if contrasted with some other colors, but it at least shows daring and a cohesive vision from designer Jerry Tam.

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

Valentino.jpg

Everyone from WWD to Forbes is anticipating the announcement of Valentino’s resignation later today. Obviously orchestrated to coincide with his 45th anniversary celebration in July and tomorrow’s kickoff of New York Fashion Week, the news comes as confirmation of established rumor to most in the industry. His next two collections — his upcoming Paris Ready-to-Wear collection and the later couture collection — will be his last, and are sure to be grand extravaganzas. With hardcore fans both within the rarefied world of couture and the elite red carpet, those with the pocketbook will be thanking their lucky stars for vintage — which is sure to become even more pricey and hard to come by!

Victoria Beckham glams it up with a pink ostrich tote

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

Victoria%20Beckham_look.JPG
With her new fashion line, Spice Girls reunion, and (how could we forget?) hottie hubby, Victoria Beckham is really hitting the mark on living the life of glamour. A true trend-setter, she was recently spotted sporting a custom-made pink ostrich Hermes Birkin bag to coordinate perfectly with her curve-hugging pink frock. If you love this style, but, like me, can’t even dream of affording it, or don’t want to advocate buying ostrich skin, then try the chic Accessory Bug faux ostrich tote, above, for $56.99.

Ashley Olsen Dresses for Labor Day

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 4th, 2007

200_collage%2520%282%29.jpg
I’m spending time in the Hamptons–enjoying the last few bits of summer sun. Last night, I went for dinner at Sen Lounge, a swanky sushi restaurant in Sag Harbor and who walks in and sits right next to me? Ashley Olsen. I’m not star crazed at all–after having worked with one, you’ve worked with them all, pretty much. But there has been so much buzz lately about the Olsen twins and how they dress. Where one achieves, the other fails. I must say, despite all the controversy over the twin fashion misses, she looked adorable! Her outfit fit the bill for an end-of-summer night that still felt beachy, but breezy. She was wearing a simple black mini tank dress like this American Apparel one, a pair of black and gold flats as seen now at Urban Outfitters and a long sweater like this one Gap is showing for fall. So, when your caught between summer and fall–think of Ashley Olsen and this 1-2-3 combo!

Designer pick of the week: Karen Walker

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

Karen%20Walker_trousers_edited.jpg
New Zealand-native Karen Walker surely knows how to style an outfit. This fall, her models glided down the runway in clothing reminiscent of the Great Depression–loose men’s pants, jackets with shoulder pads, printed blouses, and hats or head wraps. The looks were eclectic, but still well put-together with bursts of color paired with muted tones. The look above from the runway show is all about length and proportion. Long pants and a long shirt are balanced with wide shoulders and head scarf.

Virtual reality dressing room? iFashion launches in South Korea

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

iFashion.JPG
If you’ve ever wondered if the digital version of yourself would fare better in a dressing room situation, venture over to iFashion for a taste of the future. Virtual reality dressing rooms are a rising trend in South Korea where fashionistas of all ages are enjoying the freedom of trying on clothes without leaving the comforts of home. The Shinsegae Department Store in downtown Seoul is the world’s first store to run an i-Fashion option where shoppers can make a purchase using a mobile phone or in-store computer. A card is created with each shopper’s body measurements and easily matched up to the latest fashions or selected collections. Once shoppers are in the system, they can browse digital catalogs, ‘size’ them to fit, and even share results and wishlists with friends. It’s the newest face of technology; finding the perfect fit (and avoiding any swimsuit shopping anxiety completely) may not be so hard after all.

Louis Vuitton bubble ring

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

LV%20ring.jpg
I’m not a huge Louis Vuitton fan but this bubble ring definitely caught my attention. The golden U-shaped ring is super delicate and has a tiny monogrammed flower with a Swarovski crystal at the flower’s center that appears to float inside its resin bubbles. I especially adore the U-shape as it doesn’t completely surround your finger for a different ring look.

Chanel’s new face: Keira Knightley

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 4th, 2007

kiera%20good.jpg
I came across this Keira Knightley ad for Chanel and I can’t help but say—Keira, you are so hot! As far the overly airbrushed breasts, Keira was quoted in US Weekly saying, “Those things certainly weren’t mine!” But really…who cares! Her face is angelic and she has this Brit-Bohemian sense of style that is infectious. Keira replaced Kate Moss in the campaign and it looks like she took over the role quite well! Also, take notice of the hat in the ad. I posted earlier in the week that hats (including this bowler/derby style) were a sexy must-have accessory. As far as the ad’s impact–I dont know how many women will be running to buy the perfume–it seems like this ad might captivate a more masculine audience. As far as the perfume itself, Keira says, “I like fresh and this one is quite clean. I need something clean–I don’t shower enough. My natural smell is rather musky.” That said, maybe she is the perfect celebrity endorser.

Exposed zipper dresses are all the rage for fall

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

zipper1.jpg

When models at Derek Lam, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Chloé strutted down the runway in sleek, simple, well-tailored dresses in gray and black, spruced up with front exposed zippers, a new trend was born. The dresses themselves were incredibly simple, loose-fitting items, but the zippers added major pizzazz. This is a great night look and a really easy one to pull off. Try this gorgeous dress from Dallin Chase at Shopbop.com (US$268). Check out more photos after the jump.
