DIY fashion for burgeoning designers

rebeccaanddrew.JPG
When tailoring the latest designer ensemble is taking its toll on your wardrobe budget, DIY fashion could be a wiser option. Finding the perfect pair of jeans, tailored dresses, or fashion-forward t-shirts with your own label is easier than ever with the growth of online custom-made apparel shops and websites that let us create our own trend following. Sites such as UJeans, Spreadshirt.com, and Rebecca & Drew allow us to find exactly the right fit with high quality and the latest trends in mind.

Rebecca & Drew is owned by the co-founder of Alice + Olivia, offering a quality selection of customizable shirts, dresses, pants, and skirts. If you're looking for a back-to-the-basics style wardrobe with plenty of NYC-silhouettes, this is the place to find the perfect match for any body type. Rebecca & Drew offers a special 'TrioFit' sizing feature that takes three measurements on the torso and waist into account for an ideal fit. Take your pick of shirtdresses, sleeveless shells, poet sleeve tops, and traditional fit shirts for a great selection of career clothing and dressier looks when you need that perfect outfit.

UJeans.com allows visitors to customize eco-friendly jeans and find the perfect fit in all styles. The company uses environmentally friendly manufacturing processes to make all of the denim styles in its catalog, and each pair can be customized for perfect sizing.

Spreadshirt.com's CEO was recently interviewed on CNN to discuss the future of fashion. This fast growing custom-apparel company offers fashion designers-to-be a chance to create silkscreen t-shirts and other tailored clothing and sell it directly on their own e-shop. Sites such as Etsy are already leading the way for the artsy fashionistas among us to share our latest creations with the world, and Spreadshirt.com is an ideal spot for taking part in some DIY fashion.

From designer jeans to custom shoes, there's no limit on designing your own fashion-worthy wardrobe with today's online options.

Spreadshirt does not do print-on-demand silkscreening but rather heat-pressed 'flex' or 'flock' plastic material, as well as digital.

Spreadshirt is not the best place for anyone wanting to seriously run their own label or eshop, because their site is constantly breaking and because this year they go out of their way to co-market to your customers. They also won't let you have access to the customer list, so in fact, they won't really be "your" customers at all.

Well, we like open and honest feedback, so thanks for adding your thoughts beenthere. A few points from our point of view:
Yes, we don't do on demand silk screening. We did not supply the information to this reporter. The challenge is that most people don't know the technologies for "on demand" printing. What they do know is quality, and one of the top reason our shop partners join us is the quality of the Flex/Flock (a.k.a. plot) printing we use. It lasts longer then silk screening and direct to garment.

We definitely are not perfect, but with thousands of successful, profitable, and happy shop partners, we are a serious alternative for people who want to start a an online shop. Shop parters don't have upfront costs, or the hassle of dealing with accepting credit cards, producing shirts (of the right color, design and sign combinations), managing inventory, shopping, customer service, returns, lost items... and the list continues.

Regarding marketing to our shop partners customers, we do not go out of our way to do market to shop partners customers; we actively work not to. We are changing some areas where shop partners felt competition, based on their feedback. We are days away from changing some areas that go further than what shop partners requested. That said, there is a balance. Spreadshirt's name itself gives credibility and quality to the shops we provide. Our model is an "Intel inside" strategy, which gives the consumer confidence in what they are buying. Again, we have not perfected it, but this is our strategy.

I take serious issue with calling what these people do "DIY (Do It Yourself)". This is nothing more than custom tailoring (in the case of UJeans, and Rebecca & Drew)and custom printing (in the case of Spreadshirt).
Both of these processes have been around for ages, are nothing new, and have nothing to do with the DIY, limited production, handmade class of products usually found under that tag. The Urban Dictionary definition says it well: "made by a person, rather than a product coming manufactured from a company complete".
