Model citizen: Agyness Deyn
Called “the next Kate Moss” by many fashion insiders, British model Agyness Deyn has quickly caught the eye of the industry. The former fish-and-chip shop girl now sports cropped peroxide hair and is featured in ads for Burberry and Armani. Born in Littleborough, England in 1986 (although many blogs argue the veracity of that date), she met trendy designer Henry Holland, of “Get Yer Freak on Giles Deacon” slogan shirt fame, when they were still unknown fashion lovers. Deyn, born Laura Hollins, won a teen modeling competition at thirteen but decided to hold off on her career in order to finish school. She moved to London with Holland, where she was scouted by a photographer and shortly after signed with an agency. Early in her career, Deyn was advised to lose weight, but she refused.
Designer Christopher Kane has said of Deyn, "Every decade, there is a girl of the moment, and, right now, that moment belongs to Agyness."
To copy Deyn’s distinct London nu-rave look, opt for clashing patterns and menswear. Starting from the ankles up: jazz shoes are a comfortable and cheap option, try the Fairytales are True Jazz Ballet shoes for $28 at Urban Outfitters, pair with some Hue socks in a bright color (about $5). Deyn often wears skinny pants that show her ankles, try a pair of skinny corduroys from Citizens of Humanity for $148. A House of Holland t-shirt is a must, £35 on Holland’s website. For Deyn-style accessories, wear a Gap Rugby-stripe scarf, $25, and check out Urban Outfitters for a fedora, $38, and suspenders, $18.
