Tomorrow the madness of New York Fashion Week begins, but before we disappear into the tents of Bryant Park we wanted to take a moment to focus on what’s expected to come down the runway. We spoke with Claire Hamilton from fashion trend forcasting company World Global Style Network’s (WGSN). WGSN is known for their runway reports in the Daily Front Row, so we wanted to get to them first! Keep reading for what trends to expect and which designers to watch for.

WGSN predicts a body unconscious trend with shapes that are soft and curvaceous or sharp and angular. “There’s a sense of tailoring to the soft and curvaceous looks we expect for fall,” Claire Hamilton, editor and lead reporter at fashion week for WGSN.

We wanted to know how this differed from the floaty fare we’re used to seeing on Rachel Zoe clients like Lindsay Lohan. “The boho-chic silhouette relied on casual layers and easy drape, whereas fall’s new silhouette is a more purposeful shape that combines angular dimension – especially at shoulder lines – with precisely soft curves.”

Key items predicted by WGSN include blanket coats, new tux jackets – elongated with interesting shoulder details, over-sized puffa jackets, coat dresses (like the one at left from Burberry), diamond shift dresses, clown pants, super wide pants, soft all-in-ones, and afghan jackets.

Hamilton says if you can’t afford to invest in all these key pieces, not to worry. “Fall style is such a hybrid of influences – whether a mix of prints or a variety of shapes – that it’s not so much about investing in a single shape or new color,” she said. “It’s about learning to mix one’s wardrobe in a refreshing way … layering tailored pieces, incorporating a single bright-colored item or print into a look, or belting a dress or coat to get volume around the hips.”

There are quite a few designers that WGSN is looking forward to particularly next week. Lyell (left) is new to fashion week, but certainly up to the task since designer Emma Fletcher just won an Ecco Domani award. “Elise Overland also just won an Ecco Domani, she was stocked front and center at SoHo boutique Kirna Zabete, which is known for spotting up and comers like Thakoon and Derek Lam,” the trend report said.

Other new favorites include Chris Benz, Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang. Halston and Herve Leger by Max Azria are also set to be hot collections.
