Romance has not been the order of the day on most spring runways, but those who pine for ethereal dresses need not be disapointed. Subtle, beautiful details make Lovenia’s spring 2009 collection something to look forward to.
This is Lovenia designer Heidi Handler’s third collection and is inspired by “the surreal light of Nice at twilight.” The color palette of this pale light sets the line apart in a season full of brights.
Fabrics are of utmost importance with such light (in texture and color) designs, and Lovenia’s pale pink mousseline with gold silk charmeuse and light cashmere dresses evoke the luxury the designer aspires to. Cashmeres and linens from Italy, silks and laces from France, and cottons from Switzerland are combined with American tailoring for a fresh silhouette.
“I continue to explore the drop-waist, ‘good-time girl’ proportion of the Roaring Twenties, but am also drawn to the movement of longer dresses with draping and pleating details,” says Handler. “For me, they evoke nights of dancing in grand ballrooms.”
As for whom she pictured when whipping up these billowy confections, Handler says: “I looked to the cool confidence, the ethereal beauty and the femininity of Jean Harlow and Scarlett Johansson.”
