Everyone’s having a hissy fit over the fact that the Republican National Committee has reportedly spent $150,000 on campaign clothes and accessories for Sarah Palin.

The money has been spent at Saks Fifth Avenue stores in St. Louis and New York, Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, and also on hair and makeup.

Our Twitter has been abuzz with comments that such spending is irresponsible in our economic climate and other critical remarks.

But we say, isn’t spending $150K at American retailers helping the US economy and the flailing fashion and luxury goods industries?

It seems like the majority of the backlash is coming from McCain/Palin critics, but it’s Republican National Committee money so it’s really their supporters who have a right to complain if they want to.

A McCain spokesperson kind of dropped the ball though, when instead of making any of these points or raising any other good ones, simply said:

“With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses … It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”

Really, what do we expect in a society where women are judged so harshly on their looks? Palin is criticized for being too pretty and now for dressing too expensively, but Hillary Clinton is crticized for being … not so pretty, and for her ugly pantsuits. How can a woman in politics win?

You can’t claim to be in sync with the blue collar, Joe Sixpacks among us and spend 3 times the average blue collar salary on clothes in six weeks. It’s made more egregious by the fact that she plans to wear these things only once or twice. Additionally, one can look fantastic while campaigning without shopping at Saks. If she’s so into the “real America”, she can do her shopping there. In most small towns, the only store for clothes is Walmart. I suspect $150,000 could have emptied the entire ladies fashion area at most of the places the people she’s wooing shop.

As long as she buys Lacroix (Christian Lacroix, that is) I’m cool with it.

No Prada though – that’s strictly for ol’ Nicky boy.

    Blessings to you all.

$150,000 for a complete wardrobe, with makeup and hair styling, is peanuts. Most of these clothes will be worn continuously throughout the campaign – several times a week, not just “once or twice.” And believe me, to get clothes that will stand up to that abuse, you have to spend some money. Some reports indicate that the total amount was for clothes for her entire FAMILY. You would not expect her to campaign across the country in the clothes she wore to the grocery store. You would not expect her to buy her outfits at Wal-Mart (sure, then there’d be a stink about how she’s patronizing foreign clothes factories). Sorry, but this is picking nits.
