
Retailers are attempting to make the best of a disastrous fall season by starting holiday sales earlier, and offering discounts that are more post-holiday than pre.
Retailers are already asking the vendors from which they purchase their merchandise for at least 20 to 25 percent more in markdown money this season. This is nearly three months earlier than these requests typically start – post-Christmas.
Many stores are even canceling some of their fourth-quarter orders, which may lead to even more sales down the line.

Neiman Marcus offered 40 percent off all merchandise throughout the store for several days in October, went back to regular prices and has now resumed serious sales of 25 to 40 percent off throughout women’s designer, couture, contemporary and career sportswear beginning last weekend.
Macy’s is offering 25 to 50 percent off storewide through Veteran’s Day.
Saks Fifth Avenue gave 20 percent off to “friends and family” in mid-October and has been selling many of its contemporary sportswear lines at 40 percent off since then.
Bergdorf Goodman’s Web site says discounts are up to 40 percent off.
Nanette Lepore favorites are 40 percent off.
Nordstrom’s half-yearly sale is already down to 40 percent off.
All sweaters are 20 percent off and fall sale items are up to 50 percent off at J.Crew.
Kate Spade semi-private sale, up to 60 percent off.
