The fashion community was expecting a lot of things from Michelle Obama, but an ethereal ivory gown wasn't one of them! Talk of jewel tones was rampant, speculation about a halter neckline, premonitions that it would be something sleek and chic all swirled around the media.

But no, Obama suprised them all, including the designer, with her one-shouldered Jason Wu dress. The ivory silk chiffon confection was embroidered with silver thread and embellished with organza and Swarovski crystals.

The empire waistline and thick shoulder strap seemed like they could have been made more flattering for the new first lady. Perhaps if she'd consulted with the designer? But word is he was as surprised as anyone when he saw his dress on TV.

Having missed out on the CFDA award for which he was nominated last year, Wu probably won a greater prize tonight - he became a household name and a part of history.

I think she looks great. Honestly I don't get what the huge fuss is about. She's a woman, not a clothes horse. Maybe she suprised us all because she was trying to tell us she intends to set her own style, not feel pressured by the 'fashion community'.

I love her style. I love what she wore during all the daytime activities but I think this dress is just hideous on her!All those little flouncy things attached to the dress. Wehhhh gives me prom nightmares all over gain-LOL! Of course no one can seem to pull it off like she anyway! I like that she breaks the rules and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. You go first lady and wear whatever you want! And thanks for giving the new guy a chance.

Michelle Obama is a beautiful black woman, but this dress did not do her justice. From a distance it looks like rags are attatched to the dress. I loved her inaguration suit, it was very attractive. I would have prefered to see her in a more vibrant color or one of the many other more ravishing designs of Jason Wu. There was not enough breath taking quality which would reveal Mrs. Obama's fabulous figure. I have great respect for the First lady, however her choice of the gown was a disappointment for me. I wish their family great success in the coming years.
