By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 25th, 2009

SAG awards.jpg

It looks like the television stars were told to arrive at the Screen Actor’s Guild awards early, so we’re still waiting for a lot of the big movie nominees to step out of their limos. So here’s what a lot of TV’s loveliest ladies are wearing and a few movie stars too!

Jennifer Morrison (nominee, ensemble drama cast for House) – Ann Valerie Hash
Katrina Bowden (nominee, ensemble comedy cast for 30 Rock) – Christian Siriano – what up Project Runway!
Melissa Leo (nominee, female lead actor for Frozen River) – vintage/Bulgari/Judith Leiber
Holly Hunter (nominee, female actor drama for Saving Grace) – Reem Acra
Jane Krakowski - (nominee, ensemble comedy cast for 30 Rock) – Roberto Cavalli – which she knows because she was texting “her people” as she arrived and the cameras caught her!
Emily Blunt (presenter) – beautiful slinky silver number which the E! hosts failed to ask her to identify, we’re working on it! But she did mention that it was like full body Spanx.

A Friday afternoon giggle

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 23rd, 2009

Bergdorfs.jpg

When we’re actually reading something other than fashion blogs, Web sites and magazines, we enjoy a bit ‘o’ comedy from The Onion. And today they combined our two loves with this little ditty.

My Personal Shopper Is the Worst

I called up Alexa at Bergdorf’s Sunday night and told her I needed gloves, a hat, an evening dress, two coats,12 sweaters, a couple hair accessories, a slouchy belt, and some stockings, because I threw my old ones out by accident. I needed a new watch, too–something modern and new but traditional and in platinum–but I just called up Enrico for that, because he knows my hands.

Well, Monday morning rolled around, and then it was Monday afternoon, and I still didn’t have my purchases. When Alexa finally showed up, I understood why she’d taken so long–she had clearly gone out of her way to hand pick the most hideous pieces from the most hideous collections, carefully ensuring, while she was at it, that several of the items were not even in my size. (I’m a Versace 6, a Marc Jacobs 4.)”

Bargain Pick of the Week: Editor’s choices from the Anthropologie sale

By Andrea Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Anthropologie sale.jpg

This Colette cardigan, $59.95 down from $118, is just perfect for someone with a vintage sensibility. It would accentuate some curves nicely. The It Prada lace has nothing on this Magic Words Blouse, $49.95 down from $98. And while there are several great spring dresses on sale, my favorite is this Iskaldur dress, $149.95 down from $298. I love the color and the print, which is a really understated take on floral. Even on sale it’s not the cheapest pick, but it is 100% silk with a silk lining as well.

Oscar nominees announced

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Oscar nominees.jpg

The nominees are in! While the Golden Globes may steal a little bit of award nomination thunder – yes we know Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie are all going to be up for awards – they certainly don’t take away from the red carpet anticipation.

In fact, the excitement only builds after seeing what everyone wore to the Globes. Will Angie, nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for The Changeling, splash out and wear something a bit more exciting? Will Anne Hathaway, up in the same category for Rachel Getting Married, break out one of her more fashion-forward choices?

Check back here Sunday February 22 when we’ll be liveblogging the awards. Meanwhile, click through for a list of nominees.

Pedro Garcia Arabella crystal sandals

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Pedro Garcia crystal sandals.jpg

These Arabella sandals from Pedro Garcia, $440, combine two of our obsessions – gray leather accessories and ladylike details.

The crystal toe-strap is just dainty enough to avoid being too prom, and the wide ankle straps get a bow-like pleating affect that’s just girlie enough for our taste.

And, one of the reasons we love gray, it works winter or summer! Though you may want to save the open-toes for after the snow melts.

Outerwear at the Sundance Festival

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Michelle Trachtenberg and Emmy Rossum Sundance.jpg

While we have next month’s New York Fashion Week to ogle the high-fashion outerwear straight off the runway, for more casual coats Sundance is the place to look.

Lumberjack checks have been in no short supply with both Michelle Trachtenberg and Emmy Rossum choosing cozy styles to keep warm while dashing between SWAG lounges and movie premieres.

For more tough-chic options from Kristen Stewart and Paris Hilton, keep reading.

Hairdresser leaks Michelle Obama’s Vogue cover

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Michelle Obama Vogue cover.jpg

While Vogue is still toeing the line saying “We’re very interested in working with the First Lady,” Michelle Obama’s hairstylist Johnny Wright may have spilled some beans by listing styling the First Lady’s hair for “her upcoming appearance on the cover of Vogue magazine” as one of his accomplishments for a reality TV show he’s working on.

Plus, to further encourage the gossip, regular Vogue celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz was seen in Washington last week leaving the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the Obamas were staying. Insiders expect a high-low fashion mix for the photo shoot.

The March spring fashion issue would be a likely issue for Obama’s appearance, since it is one of the thickest of the year.

Banana Republic launches green Heritage for Women line this spring

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 22nd, 2009

Banana Republic SS09 Runway 013.jpg

We love shopping green, but it’s a hard row to hoe! (Like that? Gardening reference in a GREEN article. Gosh we’re funny.) If you want to try things on, as in not shop online, you have to seek out expensive lines and city boutiques. So we’re super excited that Banana Republic is bringing more sustainable fashion to the mall.

Plus, when it’s BR, you know it’s not going to be too hippy dippy, and that the quality will be good. They describe it as eco-chic meets weekend chic. Items in the line will include the Classic Novelty Gaucho, Silk Explorer Shirt, Long Embroidered Strapless Dress, Short Sleeve Jamie Pocket Tee and Cargo Khaki Bloomer.

Video: Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo appear on ‘Today’ to talk Michelle Obama

By Kimberley Foster on January 21st, 2009

Yesterday, designers Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo – two folks who have become household names overnight – appeared on the Today show to talk Michelle Obama. At one end of the spectrum we have Wu, who at 26-year-old designed the ivory one-shoulder gown that the new First Lady wore at the inaugural ball. While on the other hand, we have 48-year-old Cuban-born Toledo, who has 25 years of experience behind her, and whose lemongrass sparkly suit was also selected by Mrs Obama to wear to the swearing-in ceremony. Hear what their reactions were to seeing their creations be part of history, by clicking the video above.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: jumpsuits

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 21st, 2009

Moschino jumpsuit.jpg

It was one thing when pop stars started wearing short jumpsuits ironically (Katie Perry) and then starlets started wearing them to show off their bodies (Blake Lively) but now the long 70′s jumpsuit is back?

Moschino Cheap & Chic, shown, was just one spring 09 collection that included long, flowy jumpsuits as the new take on the maxidress.

What do you think? Is this an awesome revival or something best left in the time capsule? Yay or Nay?

Will the new Vogue documentary make it past Sundance?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 21st, 2009

The September Issue Vogue documentary.jpg

R. J. Cutler’s new documentary The September Issue debuted at Sundance this past weekend to several packed houses, but when will the general public get to view it?

Well, if you go to Netflix you can add the film to your “saved” queue though no date is listed as to when it will be available. Another hope? A&E, the original destination for the film, says they still plan to air the film sometime this year.

While Anna Wintour didn’t make the Friday night premiere, she and daughter Bee Schaffer did attend a public viewing on Saturday, and the premiere of “Rudo y Cursi.”

“[I'm] channeling mountain casual. It is actually my first time wearing jeans to work,” Wintour said. She wore a leather Michael Kors jacket with a fox collar, an Oscar de la Renta turtleneck, J Brand jeans and Manolo Blahnik boots.

We’re having some work done…

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 21st, 2009

You may have noticed a few issues on ShinyStyle recently – broken links, galleries that don’t work, that kind of thing. The good news is, those problems should now be sorted and from now on, when we publish something, it’ll actually be there!

But we need to do a bit more tidying up first, which means if you pop by after 1pm today, you might find the site isn’t working properly. Hopefully it shouldn’t last too long and we’ll be back and running better than ever in a few hours. Please bear with us as we do some behind-the-scenes fiddling, and cross your fingers along with us that it all goes to plan!

Another new magazine from a fashion favorite?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 21st, 2009

luellabartley_magazine.jpg

While many of us eagerly await ex-Pop magazine editor Katie Grand’s new venture, LOVE (and a Beth Ditto cover for the Feb. 19 launch?), we have news of a Brit defect.

Rumor has it that designer Luella Bartley could be branching out into the publishing biz.

Fashionista claims that the British designer is currently recruiting stylish folks in New York for editorial shoots, to be photographed inside posh Manhattan abodes. A Teen Vogue ex-staff member is believed to be styling the shoots and that is all the dirt that has been dug up so far.

So, what to do we think? Would we like to have Luella oversee her own magazine? Um… yes please. Peaches who?
