Affordable Fashions, dresses, vintage
By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on February 9th, 2009

If you’re as into 50′s Mad Men fashion as most of us here at Shiny, take a look at this vintage 50′s red plaid dress, $55, from starletvintage on Shop Etsy. We’re guessing it doesn’t come with the belt but we suggest you take a cue from the seller’s styling because it looks adorable.
More pics after the jump.

Gosh, does Diane von Furstenberg look stunning in blonde or what?
Grande dame Diane really has the high-low media coverage covered – what with the prominence of her design headquarters on MTV’s The City (that would be the low) and now the Purple Fashion Magazine cover.
I’ve got to say, Purple has some of my favorite covers in the industry. What do you think?

How to Wear, Innerwear
By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on February 6th, 2009

So have you figured out what you are going to wear for Valentines Day yet? Before you run to your favorite lingerie department and buy the first red bra and thong set you see … heed these words of wisdom … try before you buy.
Most of us are wearing the wrong size bra; 8 out of 10 of us, to be exact. Getting fit for a bra is oh-so-easy and will make you look and feel fabulous. Whether it is for under your Valentine’s Day outfit or possibly is your entire Valentine’s Day outfit, you will look your best if the girls are lifted and supported.
If your bra looks like a necklace–you know, when your bra rides up your back and the girls head south in front (which is just so wrong)–it will make you look old and tired instead of the gorgeous goddess that you really are.

Plenty of celebrities are already signed up for the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection fashion show to kick of fashion week. Katie Couric will wear Carmen Marc Valvo, 90210 castmates then and now Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling will wear Badgley Mischka and Betsey Johnson, and Hilary Duff and Nastia Liukin will even share the catwalk.
But one notable has yet to RSVP. Will Michelle Obama take part, as first lady Laura Bush has in the past, like last year at left?

Sometimes we fudge it on shoes, but these Urban Outfitters lace skimmers are a bona fide bargain at $19.99.
We love evening flats, they’re so versatile. Their lack of heel instantly makes them appropriate for a variety of casual outfits, but they’re just as cocktail party chic with a LBD. Or, stash them in your purse and you won’t be stuck in a sequin party frock and flip flops on your walk home.
Plus, a rubber sole? Hello Valentine, be mine!

Sarah Jessica Parker graces the cover of the upcoming March fashion issue of Harper’s Bazaar in one of my favorite new trends – zippers.
Asked how alterego Carrie Bradshaw would handle today’s recessionary times, Parker said “She would probably end up in a hospital. Perhaps she would go back to her ’80s stuff and start bringing it out again.”
We wonder if it’s as good as Parker’s own ’80s stuff. “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” anyone?
The March issue of Harper’s Bazaar hits newstands February 17. See more here.

It probably isn’t much of a vacation, what with promoting Tom’s new movie Valkyrie and all these sure-to-have-been orchestrated photo ops. But we still can’t help feeling a twinge of jealousy at Katie Holmes’ wardrobe for her week in Brazil with the fam. She’s got Mom-chic down. Okay, we’re also a little envious of Suri’s adorable sun dresses. No lie.
Here is a gallery of some of Katie’s best looks, enjoy!

More pieces from Isaac Mizrahi’s first collection for Liz Claiborne are now available on the company’s Web site, some even for purchase. More looks are slated to go up on the site February 15. So far we think Issac’s doing his job, creating more modern clothes with more stylish silhouettes that still won’t scare our Moms when they walk into Macy’s. The strapless dress is definitely the one we’ll see bridge the gap and pull in a younger shopper. What do you think so far?

New York Fashion Week - Gossip
By Andrea Thatcher on February 4th, 2009

My New York Fashion Week calendar is still in the “Oh, look at that, I’ll have quite a few shows to get to” stage and has not yet reached overscheduled, freakout-inducing madness. But one show we at Shiny always make sure to get to, with our backstage access courtesy of Redken, is Abaete.
This year Elaine will be covering the Abaete Fall 09 show, and lucky her! Daria Werbowy favorite Priestbird will be performing at the show, so maybe the model will be in the front row?
The girls at Fashionista also go their hands on a sketch, above, from designer Laura Poretzky of one of the collection looks.
Looks fab to us!

There aren’t many people out there who can wear a head-to-toe runway look and make it look better than the model, but Jennifery Connelly really loves the challenge. First with her Balenciaga turn, and now (I think) more successfully with Balmain at last night’s premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You. Dressed in Christophe Decarnin’s revered Spring / Summer 2009 collection for Balmain, she not only pulled off more sequins and sparkles than Dolly Parton, but also showed us how to work the wide shoulder silhouette that we’re going to be seeing constantly in the coming months. Plus, I love the shoes and am so glad she stuck with them to complete the look. Other well-dressed attendees like Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Ginnifer Goodwin paled in comparison to Connelly’s fashion-forward look.

Tongues are wagging across the pond that Kate Moss may be plotting to launch an acting career in Hollywood’s fair hills. Sound familiar? It’s not like it really worked for Victoria Beckham. She just got a lot more ad campaigns, which presumably Kate Moss has enough of. But let’s give Kate the benefit of the doubt and say she’s more talented than Posh Spice.
“She’s always had dreams of acting. Kate’s nervous but feels, with the right backing, she can make the transition from supermodel to Hollywood star,” a source told NOTW

Update: It’s official, the shows will be held at Lincoln Center starting in September of 2010.
“As our society is embracing the concept of change, the time has come for us too to change,” said IMG Fashion Senior Vice President Fern Mallis. “With our new home at Lincoln Center, we can re-invent, invigorate and reinforce fashion’s rightful place alongside the many creative disciplines, from music and dance, to opera and film, which also call world renowned Lincoln Center home.”
