The director sued the clothing retailer last year, after they used his image in advertising billboards without his authorization. American Apparel’s chief executive, Don Charney, argued that the image, which depicted Allen as a Hasidic Jew from Allen’s 1977 film, Annie Hall, was fair game.
On Monday, the case was put to bed when Allen was awarded $5million for violation of privacy, although he initially filed for $10million.
“It’s of course possible that by going through the trial a jury might have awarded me more money but this is not how I make my living and $5 million is enough to discourage American Apparel or anyone else from trying such a thing again,” Allen said.
Cameron Diaz has surprised many a fashion follower by landing the June ’09 issue of Vogue. Criticisms are already flying about what the actress has done lately to warrant the highly sought after cover spot on the style bible. Regardless of this fact, Cameron sat down with the magazine to discuss the trials of shooting her latest film, My Sister’s Keeper, and her father’s sudden death last year.
“I think, emotionally … it definitely took its toll. Definitely. It’s the human experience. You know, that’s what the heart does. Things are given to us, and things are taken away. And I think the heart becomes stronger, more capable,” she said.
Another day, another Hollywood event, another occasion for us to look at photos and judge, er, critique what the stars were wearing. Some of the usual suspects were out in force for the T-Mobile Sidekick LX launch at Paramount Studios and obviously they put on their glad rags to do so. But who managed to steal the show? Vote below and tell us what you think. (For what it’s worth, I’m on team Nicky Hilton today!)
A new destination, and a whole new era was on the cards for the Chanel Cruise 2010 presentation yesterday. Set in the charming surroundings of Lido Resort, Venice, the show used a boardwalk as its runway and deckchairs for its seating arrangement. The collection itself was drenched in summer days during the 1930s, dotted with sailor dresses, wide brimmed hats, striped knitted shorts and short curly bobs. Karl Lagerfeld was directly inspired by Venetian high-society, namely Marchesa Casati and Peggy Guggenheim, an American art collector whose palazzo is home to Italy’s most important collection of twentieth-century art.
Ever since she burst out onto the scene two years ago, Agyness Deyn and her crop of peroxide blonde hair have wooed many of us into submission. Her array of unusual hairdos have spawned a wave of ardent followers/copy-cats both among the celeb crowd and on the on street. In this short clip, Agy explains her ever-changing style, which began when she cut all her hair off at the age of 11. Click play on the video above to hear what she has to say.
Today I’m singling out poor wee Audrina from The Hills for this round of Yay or Nay – I say poor wee Audrina because I feel a bit bad bashing on the birthday girl (she apparently turned 24 on Saturday).
While she’s a tried-and-true jeans and rocker tee fan for her day-to-day wardrobe, I often feel she chooses red carpet outfits which can toe the line between cute and dare I say it, tarty. This one-shoulder white dress which she has selected to wear to her birthday celebrations at Beso restaurant in LA over the weekend is actually quite a good example of a good dress maybe not living up to it’s full potential. But at the same time, I also want to cheer her on for her “well, if you’ve got it, flaunt it” attitude – heck, if I looked like her, I’d probably want to wear frocks like that too! What do you think? Vote in our poll below.
It never fails to give me the warm fuzzies when celebs use their star power to get out there and support good causes (especially when it’s the ones you know are doing it for the right reasons, rather than those fame hungry ones…) And last night’s DKMS Annual Gala, for a charity dedicated to helping patients fighting blood cancers and finding bone marrow matches, was a perfect example of a worthy event brought to public attention by stars such as Rihanna and Kylie Minogue.
Kyles climbed to the top of the Empire State Building to light it up red and white in honor of the gala earlier and then later on slipped into this simple-yet-anything-but-boring cocoa brown frock. Rihanna went in the other direction with a more rock n’ roll look from Louis Vuitton, while designer Betsey Johnson stayed true to her usual kooky style in bright colours.

“The parties tonight are great, but they don’t compare to three days ago, when I sat by the Seine on my own and smoked cigarillos. It’s my favorite thing in the world. I smoke this brand La Paz — they’re cheap but it’s what I always buy. And then, I peed into the Seine. It’s the best thing I did all week.”
[Uhhh too much information Olivier? As told to Hint Mag, May 6 2009.]
Victoria Beckham’s latest ad for Emporio Armani Underwear was unveiled yesterday morning at Macy’s in New York. The black-and-white 20-ft banner marks Beckham’s continuing alliance with Giorgio Armani and was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. This time round, Victoria is sporting a braid extension and a trim physique, which she admits was the result of “a lot of running.” Jump through to see a picture of Victoria at the launch.
We hope by now you’ve managed to have a peek at all the outfits from this year’s MET Costume Institute Gala and either gasp in appreciation and awe or shock and horror at the get-ups on show. You’ve probably also had time to let the image sink in of a turban as a fashion-forward accessory that you’re most likely going to see more of now that Kate Moss has worn one and let the dust settle from the Kiefer Sutherland-Jack McColloughhead-butting incident. But we are still curious about what goes on inside this famous party and thankfully, the above video from Vogue gives us some answers to our questions. Namely who hangs out with who, what was Kiefer like at the beginning of the night and why oh why was Anne Hathaway‘s hair so darned big?
The 2009 MET Costume Institute Gala is definitely one of the red carpet fashion highlights of the year for us – finding out who is going, who is going to be dressed by whom and then finally seeing the result as they ascend the steps of the Met is such a thrill! We’re very lucky to have had the girls at Catwalk Queen covering all the big arrivals as they happened and now that it’s over for another year, it’s time to ogle the frocks (and the turbans!) and decide who got it right and, well, who didn’t.
When Frances Grill, founder & CEO of Click Models, Illusions, Industria Photo Studios and Flick Talent, opened her agency and began to look for new talent, she knew she wanted to “do” more than the typical wholesome All-American blonde beauty.
When she started out, Frances ran up against a host of challenges because the industry didn’t support ethnicity and wanted to break that mould. She has always gone for the ethnic talent and rebelled against what the industry said should fit right then. By taking her practiced eye to new places for new faces, she began to see what others didn’t want to…
