Harper’s Bazaar criticized over Angelina Jolie “tabloid” cover

By Kimberley Foster on June 10th, 2009

harpersbazaar_us_angelinajolie_julyissue.jpgMuch has been made over that Harper’s Bazaar cover starring Angelina Jolie (pictured left) in the past few days. Everyone from readers to journalists to bloggers have been left unimpressed by the magazine’s decision to feature a photo agency picture of the actress on their July cover.

Indeed, even yours truly has been left rather stumped by this choice to use a Getty red carpet photo instead of the usual stylised photo-shoot image. As if that wasn’t strange enough, there isn’t even an interview with Ange inside the mag, just an essay written by Naomi Wolf about the actress. As some have put it, it’s bordering on tabloid.

“It’s a sad state when a legitimate [fashion] magazine goes to the lengths of doing a write around. That’s saved for tabloids,” said a Hollywood publicist.

As for Harper’s reaction, a spokesperson said: “Clearly, we are in an Angelina moment right now, and in a recent online poll, our readers reinforced that, overwhelmingly choosing Angelina as the woman they admired most for having it all. We responded immediately, asking Naomi Wolf to analyze the Angelina phenomenon and rushing to get her photo on the newsstand cover. We’ve done different covers for subscriber copies since 2001.”

The subscriber edition uses a different cover all together, starring Doutzen Kroes in a photo-shoot by Terry Richardson.

It seems ludicrous to me that they wouldn’t just use the one cover of Doutzen and be done with it. Obviously it is all a bid to see how many copies they can move off the shelf, but at what expense to the reader? Call it what you like but I feel ripped off.

I did not like this cover or the article either. Naomi expressed her own opinion about Ms. Jolie and went on to say that all women “want” her or “want to be her”. This is NOT true for most women. This was a very badly written article that should never have been published.

well said. I definitely agree. They couldve at least put an old photoshoot of angie for the cover.. :/

  3. blom says:

They should have put Doutzens cover on the newsstand !!

I am disappointed in Harper’s Bazaar. But, it seems like magazines will do anything to sell an issue. With a dying print industry, I can see WHY they made the cheap move. As a reader, I am unimpressed by the stock image and flimsy article.

At least I am subscriber and I’ll get Doutzen on my cover.

  5. Linda says:

Not that I don’t like Angelina, but I’d much rather have Doutzen on all of the covers. She is gorgeous, pure elegance and class, and deserves to be the cover model, not Angie.

i suggest a world wide publicized poll and come up with the true figures. sorry, i cannot for one moment relate myself with a female who has photo shoots with horses licking her tits. im sorry but i have a child and dont want her to think if Jolie likes crap like that, it would be ok for her to do the same.

she’s a devious personality and would hate to think im being scaled against low standards like that. MONEY DONT BUY CLASS OR THE FEATHERS YOU’RE BORN WITH.

furrball, who let you out of the Angie hater lair known as FF? Amaya, you can’t speak for every women. I think it’s shameful to use her past against her when she has changed so much for the better. Do we hate Robert Downy Jr for his past? Do we hate Brad Pitt for dating underage girls when he was in his 20s? yes, brad pitt dated 2 underage girls. one was his co-star in dallas and she was only 14 and the other was Juliete lewis at age 16. so let’s make it fair and hate the men just as much as we hate Angelina.

AIRBRUSH? OMG. THEY SHOULD HAVE RUN THAT CANNES PHOTO WHERE HER HEAD LOOKS LIKE FREAKY AT AN ANGLE.

  10. Malcatraz says:

I thought it was a great cover. If anyone had actually read the essay that Naomi Wolf had written they would have thought it ridiculous to have staged a photo shoot with Ms. Jolie for the essay.

It was basically a long overdue ode to the woman that was well written, incredibly insightful and accurate, and had never been said before. It was the opposite of what you would read in a tabloid.

Having just a candid snapshot of her for the cover was very appropriate for this particular issue.

  11. Mia says:

I second Malcatraz I think we should cut some slack to Jolie here, she has changed we all know and she is now running up with her family, as for the movie business then people that’s her profession and everyone in the world has the right to be professional then why leave her out of it?I dont know why people hate her or are so much obsessed with what she does and how much weight she is losing, let her be damn it. Let her live. She is a beautiful woman in her own way and no one is asking any woman on earth being compared to her so stop cursing her and snap out of it!
