Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen launch sunglasses range for spring 2010

By Andrea Petrou on October 14th, 2009

mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen.jpgAfter Lindsay Lohan’s tragic fashion design debut, we should be wary of child actresses who have expanded into the fashion world.

However there is one team of successful actresses showing Lindsay how it should be done and that’s Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen.

The twins, who found fame on various sitcoms when they were young, have built up the Row, a successful fashion line, which includes shoes, accessories and a variety of clothes that we would be proud to be seen in.

They have now announced they are expanding their range into sunglasses.

They have teamed up with luxury eyewear maker Linda Farrow (other collaborations include Dries Van Noten and Sofia Kokosalaki) to create a range of sunnies that will be out for spring 2010.

The styles are said to be classy, chic and more John Lennon than Jackie O. We’re not sure we can wait until next summer to wear them.

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2009

Baby Uggs.jpgWe don’t usually feature children’s clothes on ShinyStyle but we thought we’d make an exception since these products are for such a good cause, and very , very cute.

‘Babies In Sheep’s Clothing,’ is an ethical range of lambskin and merino clothes, booties (think baby Uggs) and accessories made in New Zealand.

It’s teamed up with the UK charity for premature babies, Bliss, to help support a cause that provides vital support and care to premature and sick babies.

The company says it will donate £1 to Bliss for every pair of ugg-style booties, slippers and boots sold across the UK.

We might not have kids ourselves but the nieces may get an extra special present now.

Ralph Lauren forced to apologise after over airbrushing a model

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2009

Designer Ralph Lauren has had to apologise after the company airbrushed a model to tiny proportions.

In a recent advertising campaign for the brand’s Blue Label jeans the designer airbrushed size 8, 21 year old model Filippa Hamilton so much that her head was wider than her waist, making her look emaciated and sporting the “lolly pop” head look.

The image was first bought to the public’s attention via blog Boing Boing, which spotted the advert on Japanese billboards.

After a heated exchange of words Ralph Lauren admitted the mistake and issued a statement, where it said: “For over 42 years, we have built a brand based on quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman’s body.”

“We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every precaution to ensure that the calibre of our artwork represents our brand appropriately.”

Visit Boing Boing to see the image and follow the exchange of words between the brand and the blog.

Samantha Cameron steps out in M&S

By Andrea Petrou on October 9th, 2009

Sam one.jpgPolitician’s wives are fast becoming a popular topic of conversation in the fashion world as they move into the limelight.

We’ve analysed many a politician’s wife in the past from Michelle Obama to Cherie Blair and now we’ve turned our attention to Conservative leader David Cameron’s missus Samantha.

At the Tory Conference today, where her husband tackled the difficult issue of the national debt, his supportive wife stepped out in a £65 Marks & Spencer dress and Zara heels. This is a far cry from the £600 Erdem dress and £300 Jimmy Choo heels she wore to introduce her husband at the Labour Party Conference.

We love the polka dot style look of this outfit, which we think shows a solidarity to us women, who have depended on the high street in these current times.

But we want to know what you think. Do you like this look and do you see Mrs Cameron replacing Michelle Obama in the fashion stakes? Or do you think politician’s wives are still looking as dowdy as ever?

Apart from, of course, Nicholas Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni who looks stunning in everything she wears, but we have to remember she did have head start being top model.

Get the look: Daisy Lowe’s and Alexa Chungs jewellery

By Andrea Petrou on October 9th, 2009

Alexa Chung.JPGThe day has finally come when we can wear the same jewellery as our style icons without the need to take out a second mortgage.

London fashionistas Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe worked Swarovski Crystallized on the front rows of London’s Fashion Week’s hottest shows.

Mixing this jewellery with their own personal style the London icons made each look their very own. We love Daisy’s gothic style Bee ring, which was designed by Kenneth Jay Lane and made with crystallized Swarovski Elements, and we love the fact that we too can buy it for £58.

If the gothic look doesn’t float your boat then take a leaf out of Alexa Chung’s fashion style. The TV presenter and all round fashionista went for the bold retro look with a pretty necklace and big ring. And we can again follow in her fashion footsteps.

The Klimt rose/bronze plated ring has been designed by Gian Paolo Maria and made with Crystallized Swarovski Elements and is a bargain at £57. The Floating Lotus Pendant necklace by Andre Putman for Swarovski Crystallized is also a snip at £55.

Visit the Swarovski Crtstallized store now to get your hands on them.

Barry M launches Blue lipstick

By Andrea Petrou on October 8th, 2009

image002.jpgIt seems it’s not going to be the icy winter that turns our lips blue this year. Blue has made its high street debut as the colour for lips this season with Barry M Cosmetics’ new shade coming in from the cold.

The striking statement, first seen on the catwalk at Louis Vuitton and Gautier last year, and directional magazine shoots ever since, is now poised to hit the big-time, with the ice cool look set to be red hot this winter.

Brave beauty queens should make this futuristic lip look the statement, wearing other minimal make up.

The lipstick, which costs £4.25 will be available from mid October. If you can’t wait until then we suggest sticking your face in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Gap launches Channel Pierre Hardy boots and we find a cheaper alternative

By Andrea Petrou on October 8th, 2009

Channel Pierre Hardy.JPGFashionistas have been falling over themselves to get their hands on Channel Pierre Hardy’s boots for Gap.

One magazine editor has also admitted her team have a good few pairs each of these fur lined suede marvels, and we can see why. They are gorgeous.

The boots, which cost £108, aren’t cheap but this hasn’t deterred many people as they stampede to get their hands on a pair.

So we’ve had a little look around to try and find something similar, and of course at a much cheaper price. Cue these little gems from Clarks Originals.

They may not have the buckle detailing or height of Gap’s boots but for £89 this fur lined footwear, in a range of soft autumnal shades, could make a good alternative.
