Get the look: Fern Cotton’s Pink Floyd t-shirt

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2009

Fern.JPGI’ve always liked Fearne Cotton and even before she really made it she was one of my idols, so I’m pleased to see she’s remained just as down to earth as I thought she was.

She was spotted leaving the Radio 1 studios yesterday sporting this men’s Pink Floyd tee and we can get the same one for £20 from online t-shirt store Truffle Shuffle.

Team up with acid wash jeans, converse trainers and 80s inspired sunnies for the ultimate Fern Cotton look.

Safe Beauty Association moves to rule out unhygenic and dangerous practices in the beauty industry

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2009

face_and_beauty.jpgWe’ve all heard the horror stories about beauty treatments going wrong whether it’s a nail infection from a dirty instrument, to torn skin after an overzealous nail technician has got too cuticle happy. I unfortunately have had a personal experience with this.

Then there are the other stories, which frankly make DIY treatments seem like the better option. These include burnt and blistered legs and nether regions, from wax that is too hot or that has been reused from another client.

Research conducted by the Safe Beauty Association (SBA) has also found that over a third of beauty salons have no public liability insurance and are carrying out unsafe practices such as make up artists using old brushes and “double-dipping” leading to the spreading of germs.

Doesn’t make for pleasant reading does it?

Thankfully it seems the beauty industry has woken up to these problems and has launched a new campaign to promote safe beauty practices in the industry.

Called “Hidden Truth. Safe Beauty”, the campaign hopes to change the face of the beauty industry by highlighting how bad hygiene and poor working practice can lead to infections and disease.

From this month the SBA, will provide a range of free and paid-for services to support professionals and encourage them to make changes across the beauty industry. It will also form a code of practice to raise the standard of the industry and ensure these practices are wiped out as quickly as your leg hair during a waxing.

Antonia Hawke founder and chief executive at the SBA said: “Without the ugly truth, there is no motivation to change the norms of the industry. It will take courage and determination to engage with and convince the industry to work towards a more responsible Code or Practice, with health and hygiene at its core. ‘Safe beauty’ is our watchword. And when you think about it, should there ever be any other kind?”

YSL launches a perfume claimed to have an edgier, younger scent than the brand’s iconic Paris fragrance.

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2009

ysl-parisienne-1254770971.jpgIf you like to smell like a designer dolly then you’ll be thrilled to hear Yves Saint Laurent Beauté has launched a new feminine fragrance.

Parisienne has been inspired by the glamour and seductive allure of a Parisian woman and is described as an edgier, younger scent than the brand’s iconic Paris fragrance.

The floral woody scent opens with a vinyl accord, said to add a modern twist to the fragrance and evokes the gloss, varnish (we really hope it doesn’t smell like this) or metal of a spike heel.

It is balanced with cranberry and blackberry. There is also hints of damask rose, violet and peony, while patchouli, musk, sandalwood, which the company claims adds “depth at the base”.

We haven’t yet smelt the fragrance, which is also available in a body lotion, deodorant and shower gel but if supermodel Kate Moss is the face of the fragrance, we’re sure it won’t be too bad.

Victoria Beckham launches S/S 2010 range

By Andrea Petrou on October 5th, 2009

Victoria B ss2010.jpgUnlike Lindsay Lohan, it seems Victoria Beckham most definitely made her mark at Fashion Week with sharp tailored clothing, that we, or any other fashion critics , can’t fault.

The pop star, Wag and all round fashionista, known better for her jeans range, showed off a range of tailored slinky dresses, which we’re sure you’ll agree are gorgeous.

However, to fit into these you’ll need to be small. We think that our gym membership may need to be renewed.

Lindsay Lohan’s designs for Ungaro slated by critics

By Andrea Petrou on October 5th, 2009

Lindsay Lohan has been dealt another blow and this time it’s nothing to do with her love life.

Ungaro and Lindsay.jpgHer long anticipated collection with Spanish designer Estrella Archs for Ungaro has been slated by fashion critics who have called the Spring 2010 range, which features a range of hearts on bottoms and busts, an “embarrassment.”

After the collection’s debut in Paris Fashion Week, WWD, known as the style bible of the industry said: “As for the clothes, they looked cheesy and dated, as has often been the case chez Ungaro during the post-Emanuel revolving door of designers.

“Hot pink, orange and flashy, with an overworked heart motif relentless in its execution, the collection displayed none of the promised younger side Lohan was supposed to deliver. ”

Hilary Alexander, fashion director at the Daily Telegraph, said: “The best that can be said is that they tried.”

We’ve also had a browse around the collection, and unfortunately we’d have to agree that the styles are more tacky than trendy.

Back to the acting day job Lindsay?

Pixie Geldof becomes the face of USC’s Abandon collection

By Andrea Petrou on October 5th, 2009

pixie.jpgPixie Geldof is no stranger to the world of fashion and modelling, so we weren’t really surprised to hear that she’s now the face of USC’s Abandon range.

Launched recently, the collection has rock inspired pieces such as leopard print in grey and blue and those well known 80s batwing tops.

We love this metallic 80s style dress, which we think will make you feel like a dancing queen every time, and something we won’t feel ashamed about wearing out.

Unlike Pixie’s last modelling job where we decided that her Flintstones look would be a much better purchase for fancy dress.

Highstreet VS Designer: Scarves

By Andrea Petrou on October 2nd, 2009

QS Scarf.jpgIt’s getting closer and closer to the winter and that means we’ll soon be digging out our scarves, hats and gloves in a bid to stay that little bit warmer.

I love my scarves as much as the next girl and if I had it my way I’d have a few designer ones in my wardrobe ready to protect me from the biting chill of the ice and wind.

So when I stumbled upon this scarf by QS, I was thrilled. Not only does it look warm but I’m sure you’ll agree its very similar to the Missoni one pictured below.

Yes there are few differences, but its notably the price. My QS find is £4, compared to the £99 Missoni is asking for. Bargain.

ShinyStyle Investigates: Rogue modelling agencies and why they get away with it

By Andrea Petrou on October 2nd, 2009

293.model.catwalk.090407.jpgI’m not exactly model material. I stand at an average 5’5 and my love for Chinese take away and chocolate means I’m not the required size six or zero.

But whilst strolling amongst the throng of shoppers on London’s Oxford Street I was quite literally ambushed by a “model scout” who insisted I had “the look for model and TV extra work.”

Being no stranger to these types of scouts, which in the past I have ignored, I thought I’d do a little bit of research for you, so I obliging had my picture taken and gave her my details. Apparently if you are “chosen” the company calls you and signs you up.

A mere 24 hours later they informed me I had been “accepted onto their books” and they wanted me to attend a casting for MTV.

So what was the catch? Read on to see what happened.

Jil Sander teams up with Uniqlo

By Andrea Petrou on October 1st, 2009

jil.jpgIt’s always nice to wear the same designer fashions that celebrities like, but there’s always the problem of money.

After all many of us can’t afford the £1000 plus items celebrities wear.

Until now that is. Jil Sander whose designs have graced the bodies of Katie Holmes and Diane Kruger has teamed up with highstreet shop Uniqlo to give us poorer fashionistas an affordable range of clothing.

The capsule collection includes a tailored grey wool coat and purple mac as well as a slightly puffed skirt. There are also skinny jeans, a blazer and miniskirt. We’ll you by the tills.

Real fur for fashion: Yay or Nay?

By Andrea Petrou on October 1st, 2009

fur.jpg
Fur has made a comeback to the catwalk this year, with many designers showing off these fur sleeves and we know it’s now only a matter of time before this trend hits the high street. Although many stores will opt for fake fur to keep costs and protesting down, we think higher end stores will stock the real deal. We don’t have an exceptionally strong opinion on fur but we know many of you do so we want to hear from you. Vote below, and leave your comments and tell us what you think about real fur in fashion.
