Lily Allen poses with Karl Lagerfeld for Elle

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2009

Lily.jpgLily Allen is no stranger to fashion creation and we imagine has the number of a few of those top designers in her little black book (or mobile phone).

So we’re hardly surprised that the singer has been snapped for next month’s Elle Magazine next to Karl Lagerfeld. Afterall she did help design the Coco Cocoon, an understated new collection of featherweight quilted handbags and travel accessories for Chanel.

We love the black and white contrast of this picture and as always Lily looks fantastic in tight trousers and ankle length boots.

Filofax Beauty giftbox worms its way onto our Christmas lists

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2009

Filofax Beauty Box _pink_.jpgA girl can never have too many clothes, bags and shoes, but we know that this Christmas it’s going to be hard to put everything we want onto our lists. If, like us, you want to give Santa a break, and get yourself organised then we’ve found a perfect Christmas list must have.

The limited edition Filofax Beauty Giftbox is everything a girl on the move could wish for. Each Giftbox contains a unique perfume pen atomiser, and a mirror and of course a chic Filofax organiser.

The organisers come in a hot pink leather-look, an oatmeal ‘snakeskin’ design or the bang on trend ultra-kitsch ‘Fresco’ fabric and each one contains a 2010 diary, dividers, address pages and notepaper. And if that wasn’t enough you’ll also get the chance to indulge your inner goddess with a free beauty treatment, haircut or photographic shoot.

Treatments include facials, massages and manicures (worth £25); a haircut and finish (worth £40); or you can choose to live like a model with a complete fashion makeover session including make-up, hair and a photographic shoot (worth £100.).

We think this is an amazing gift for £35 and if we’re lucky Santa may not just deliver it early (hint hint) but also find some loose change in his pocket for those shoes and bags we’ve been banging on about for the past few weeks.

X-Factor get the look: Cheryl Cole’s pink Giles Deacon dress

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2009

We’ve been keeping an eye on Cheryl’s X-Factor look for a while now and we’re sure you’ll agree she’s doing very well at keeping her reputation as a style icon.

She looked stunning in her custom made Giles Deacon pink bodycon dress, which fitted into the WHAM! theme night perfectly and would look great as a Christmas outfit.

She also bought home the Minnie Mouse bow look, sported by many a celeb back in the 80s.

If you want some more of these style ideas then check out our Minnie Mouse inspired looks gallery here.

In the meantime we’ve put together a range of pink dresses similar to Cheryl’s.

Lacoste bundle boots keep your feet dry and warm on rainy days

By Andrea Petrou on November 23rd, 2009

bundle ns black floro[9].jpgMonday has greeted us with a very wet and murky start to the day, making that commute into work even more of a nightmare than the usual post weekend journey. And we can imagine your feet and shoes are now feeling more like they’ve stepped into the I’m a Celebrity jungle rather than the nice, dry warm ones you set out with this morning.

With weather like this, it’s tempting to dig out those wellies, but we know these will make many of you feel more like you’re going to that festival than to work so we’ve found you a happy medium.

Lacoste has just launched its “Bundle” boot, which is a unique take on the traditional Wellington, and is a perfect piece of footwear for this type of weather.

It comes in 3 colours including Floro Pink, a Black/Floro Mix and a chic Black Gloss and if you hurry down to Office you can snap some up for a bargain £20.

Leopard print makes its mark at the Twilight: Full Moon premiere

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

THE CINEMA SOCIETY and D&G host screening of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung turned up to the Twlilight: New Moon New York premiere last night wearing leopard print accents. Animal prints are always relevant in fashion in one form or another, but there’s something particularly cool right now about finishing off denim and black with a shoe, bag or jacket in leopard print.

Alexa used her bag to tone down a full-skirted, metallic navy blue prom dress and black platform heels. Of course, Pixie’s trademark 90s grunge style didn’t need toning down. She wore her leopard print fake-fur gilet with a tight black dress and chunky Doc Marten-style boots, topping the look off with a beanie hat.

Our advice is to follow these two it girls’ leads and stick to one leopard print item per all-black outfit to really make a statement.

Get the look: Alexandra Burke’s Rolling Stones t-shirt

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

Alexandra Burke.jpg Alexandra Burke was photographed at the airport wearing this new interpretation of a classic logo t-shirt. It’s designed by Elegantly Waisted, who add embellishments to rock t-shirts with ribbon, buttons, appliques and lace, and costs £45. We’ve checked out the rest of the range – they’ve got tees and dresses featuring Guns n’ Roses and Ramones logos.

Go to www.truffleshuffle.co.uk if you want to buy it. But remember the band t-shirt rule: if you haven’t heard of them, you’re not allowed to wear their t-shirt.

Gallery: Polka dots, bows, and red and black dresses – Minnie Mouse inspired looks

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

Wednesday’s photos of Chanel Iman looking surprisingly stylish dressed up as Minnie Mouse for Vogue Germany inspired us to look for clothes and accessories that channel the cartoon mouse, without veering into fancy dress territory.

Oversized polka dots are a fresh take on the trend this season, and bows, whether undersized worn round your neck, or massive worn atop your head, are a trend that just won’t go away. Red and black can be a great colour combination for a party outfit, especially if you add some cartoon-like accessories. Or you could just wear a top with a picture of Minnie on it, if you can’t be bothered to be subtle about it.

Crocs launch site to get feedback on their shoe designs

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

crocs.jpg The Croc is a shoe that divides people, much like the Ugg. Usually, those people arguing for the Croc claim that comfort should take precedence over any other factor in footwear; everyone else points out calmly that Crocs are probably the most hideous things you could ever choose to put on your feet.

Crocs have decided to tap into this cultural divide by launching a website that allows users to give feedback on Crocs designs. According to the site,

Crocsideas.com is a global platform where you are able to share your ideas and input with Crocs and fellow community members around the world. When you share an idea, other members can vote your idea to the top and Crocs can put this idea into action.

In other words, you do the work so the design team doesn’t have to.

In their defense, the Crocs brand now offers a lot more than the plastic clog hybrid that made them famous; unfortunately the ones we liked the most were a rip-off of these Marc Jacobs ballet shoes.

If you have the urge to input your ideas for the Crocs brand, visit the site here.

Comme des Garcons release limited edition fragrance

By lotte on November 19th, 2009

Comme des garcons Glitter.jpg This is definitely a case of buying a fragrance just for the bottle. For the lead-up to Christmas, Comme des Garcons have released a special edition version of their most popular fragrance. Comme des Garcons 2 ‘Glitter’ comes in a purple glittery bottle, and although all of their fragrances are puportedly unisex, we think this one would look nicest on our dressing table.

With notes of amber, cumin, incense and cedarwood, it’s not subtle, and would suit someone who wants their fragrance to get them noticed – and who likes their perfume bottles to stand out, too. The 50ml eau de parfum costs £44.50, and is available at major central London department stores (and the Leeds Harvey Nichols).

Topshop and M&S preview Spring collections and reveal upcoming trends

By lotte on November 19th, 2009

M&S loose trousers.jpg Sneak previews of the Spring/Summer 2010 collections at Marks & Spencer and Topshop have revealed some of the trends we’ll be wearing next year – and exposed underwear is at the top of the list.

According to the Guardian, ‘big knickers’ are a key trend, with M&S producing various styles, while Topshop had cycling shorts and denim biker jackets in their collection. Both stores will be stocking looser trousers as the style to be wearing next Spring. Underwear features heavily, either as a standalone piece of clothing, or as a design feature incorporated into an item (think dresses with sheer panelling and visible corsetting).

These looks won’t be available until at least January, so for now, in the real world, it’s probably best to focus on what to wear in the winter months. And we’re guessing you won’t be planning to wear just your knickers to a party unless you’re Lady Gaga.

Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester has a fashion disaster

By lotte on November 19th, 2009

Leighton Meester disaster.jpg Oh dear… Leighton Meester appeared yesterday at a launch for the opening of a new American Eagle Outfitters store in New York, and her chosen outfit was, in our opinion, more than a bit misguided. ‘Interesting’ splodges on her leggings meant that the audience were more entranced by her legwear than the performance of tracks from her upcoming album. She was joined by fellow Gossip Girl cast members Michelle Trachtenberg (who is steadily building her fashion rep with a collaboration with Coach in the pipeline) and Jessica Szohr. Maybe Michelle’s friend had just said something about those leggings when this photo was taken.

We know Leighton wants to distance herself from her prim and proper alter-ego, Blair Waldorf, but this is taking it a bit far. And maybe she should have put a proper top on, too – does a waistcoat layered over a leather bandeau bra really count as a legitimate top-half of an outfit?

What do you think of Leighton’s 80s ensemble?

Online discounts set to soar this Christmas

By lotte on November 19th, 2009

Christmas Present.jpg Lots of us do our Christmas shopping online these days. As long as you know it’s going to get there on time, it’s a convenient way to do it, and if like me you spend hours on the internet every day already, it doesn’t really seem like very hard work.

But there might be even more of an incentive to avoid the high street this year: website VoucherCodes.com had reported big increases in the discounts made available exclusively to buyers online. A lot of the big high street shops, like Argos, Debenhams and Dorothy Perkins are already offering up to 25% off. So you could take advantage of these discounts to get yourself a Christmas outfit at the same time as sorting out presents. Very handy.

According to VoucherCodes, if you hold out on ordering gifts (or clothes) you’ve got a better chance of paying less, as discounts could go as high as 50% in December.

Alternatively, you could do what I’ve always wanted to do – wait till after Christmas and get everyone’s presents in the sales. But it might spoil the day a little: “Oh wow, you got me an IOU!” isn’t really what you want to hear when your mum opens her present.

Follicle fakery: Is Cheryl Cole’s hair for real?

By lotte on November 19th, 2009

Cheryl Cole follicle fakery.jpg Lauren Bravo writes: Pray silence, for the eighth wonder of the world!

Ahem: Cheryl Cole’s hair.

(It’s ok, you can squeal now).

Go on! Let it out, sisters! The bounce, the swing, the waves! That texture, that shine! That vague idea that perhaps, if she shakes it at just the right angle, a family of baby bluebirds might fly out singing Love Machine… It’s been over a year now since the nation first took Chezza to our hearts, and the flame doesn’t seem to be dying any time soon. Sure, the combination of cartoon dimples, novelty accent and lilliputian proportions have got her so far, but we all know the true source of adoration lies in the hair.

For it is hair like no other. It is the hair of three women put together. It’s so colossally thick it can muffle out the words “didn’t she once punch that toilet attendant?” with a single almighty swish. Cole has set the bar at an impossible height for hair volume, like Jennifer Aniston did for straightness and Lady Godiva did for nipple coverage. Mere mortals can’t compete – all the backcombing in the world won’t produce her tresses, just a stiff wrist and the urge to go running along a mountain top crying “Mojo, where have you goooooone?”

And why is it so impossible? Come on, we all know. It’s there in teeny letters at the bottom of the screen, covering L’Oréal’s ass for when the lank-locked among us try to sue. “Styled with natural extensions”, says the disclaimer. “Fake!” says the triumphant voice in our heads.

Yes, extensions are everywhere. Once the preserve of Page 3 and Wetherspoons toilet queues (with the kind of brillo pad texture useful for mopping up spilt Malibu later in the evening), fake hair has finally gone legit. And with it has arrived an eternal guessing game – is it? Isn’t it? From Leighton Meester’s tumbling curls (yes) to Lindsay Lohan’s increasingly straggly mane (hell yes) to every America’s Next Top Model contestant (blame Tyra Banks, Queen of the Weave, for believing that a good model should be able to smile with her eyes and polish floors with her hair).

Last week, ShinyStyle revealed that one of Meester’s Gossip Girl colleagues has the most requested style of the year; but after a night of typing “Does Blake Lively wear extensions?? Does she doesshedoesshe?” into Google, the jury is still out. My question is this, though: are they cheating? Would knowing that Blake’s hair isn’t all hers make it less covetable?

The irony of Cheryl’s L’Oréal campaign, of course, is that it doesn’t make you want to buy shampoo at all. It makes you want to buy synthetic clip-ins. Now that even mascara ads tell you they’re using lash extensions, advertising has backfired somewhat. “Heck, we don’t think our product really works either”, they say. “Just cut out the middle man and buy a new face.”

But of all people, I cannot judge – to damn Cole and crew for their hair fakery would be like the pot calling the kettle peroxide. Instead I should sympathise. For however hard these little enhancements work to be accepted by fashion’s elite, there is always a stigma in the everyday world. If I had a pound for every time someone has eyed my bleached hair and said “Do you not think you’d look better with your natural colour? More, y’know, natural?”, I could afford extensions enough to build a border collie Girls Aloud tribute band. “Maybe,” I reply. “But then it wouldn’t look like custard. And where’s the fun in that?”

So I understand extensions. It’s ok Cheryl, I get it. We can’t all have hair that looks like a chestnut duvet, and we don’t all need to – but yours is a world of one-upmanship, and you need that extra boost to stay on top. Just promise me this: if you start getting neck ache, give them a rest for a while. Because you’re worth it.

Chanel Iman makes Minnie Mouse a style icon in Vogue Germany

By lotte on November 18th, 2009

Chanel Iman 2.jpg Bunny ears have been getting hotter and hotter in recent months, with stars like Madonna being spotted in Louis Vuitton versions, and Lily Allen and the Olsen twins in Maison Michel ears. It seems like a trend that naturally follows on from the massive bows we’ve been seeing on models’ heads in previous catwalk shows (and in the high street). This time, of-the-moment model Chanel Iman has been featured in a spread wearing bows, bunny ears and oversized polka dots in an homage to adorable Disney star Minnie Mouse.

Topshop are currently selling three different type of bunny ears(!), so you can try and find a way to wear them. We wouldn’t recommend pairing them with red and white polka dots, but they might be a kooky addition to an otherwise grown-up outfit. Buy them here, here and here.

Christmas party outfits: Clutch bags

By lotte on November 18th, 2009

Are you the type of girl who only takes their essentials with them to a party, effortlessly knowing exactly what you’ll need that night? Or are you, like me, someone who can’t work out which bits of makeup to pack, or whether or not you really need to stuff your digital camera into that elegant little clutch bag? Unfortunately, clutches are often the only way to really perfect a special outfit, because there’s something just that little bit more classy about casually tucking your bag under your arm while you sip at a martini.

So, despite their inconvenient size, here are some of the most desirable evening clutches on the high street now. They’re big enough for your phone, keys, credit card, compact and lipstick (which is, by the way, supposedly all you’ll need). These clutches are all party-ready, but most of them will be wearable well after Christmas is over – classic designs and detailing means a few of them are suitable for daywear too.
