Designer t-shirts for amazing prices at eco pop-up shop

By lotte on November 13th, 2009

Luella enviro foundation tee.jpgIf you’ve already decided to buy the Pixie Lott designed t-shirt, why not carry on the good deeds and go on a charity tee roll? Designer t-shirts are definitely having their moment right now, as a number of fashion houses have been producing their take on the normally cheap classic. But as these versions usually cost at least £60 (right now, for example, you can get this very cool Marc by Marc tee for £65, while this similarly brilliant See by Chloe number will set you back a mere £105), it’s usually better value to head to your local Urban Outfitters for a cheap and cheerful graphic tee.

The charity-designer collaboration is a classic one, and this time around it’s the Environmental Justice Foundation that’s launching a pop-up boutique in London’s Carnaby Street. Open from today for just two weeks, all t-shirts cost £30, and with designs by Luella (pictured), Giles Deacon and Richard Nicoll, we’d highly recommend getting down there as soon as possible – the tees are on sale only until they sell out!

You can also shop online at www.ejfoundation.org/shop.

Pixie Lott designs a charity t-shirt for Moschino

By Andrea Petrou on November 13th, 2009

pixie-lott-moschino-1258066644.jpgOver the past few months we’ve reported on a number of collaborations between celebrities and high street stores, who joined to design various ranges for charity.

Next to do her good deed is Pixie Lott. Not content with designing a charity t-shirt for River Island, the popstarlet has gone back to the design board, this time teaming up with Moschino to design a limited edition T-shirt.

Her grey tee features a graffiti design of lyrics from her songs and all profits made will be donated to the Perthes Association, a charity that supports families and children suffering from Perthes’ disease and The Italia Conti Trust.

The T-shirt will available exclusively on the Moschino virtual boutique from mid November and we think the £85 price tag is more than worth it.

Christmas party outfits: Playsuits and jumpsuits

By Andrea Petrou on November 13th, 2009

Jumpsuits and playsuits have bounced back in from the 80s and landed firmly in the midst of this season’s popular styles.

Many celebs have been spotted wearing this debatable fashion including Sarah Harding who celebrated the opening of her new nightclub in a striking blue jumpsuit.

And as you can imagine, many designers have made them key parts of their collection, including Zandra Rhodes who designed a range of theses for Marks and Spencer.

If you want to stand out in style at this year’s Christmas party then this is a fashion trend that will really get everyone talking.

We have a look at the best jumpsuits and playsuits available on the highstreet.

Lindsay Lohan’s collection for Ungaro takes yet another blow

By Andrea Petrou on November 12th, 2009

linds lo.jpgJust when we thought things couldn’t get any worse for Lindsay’s fashion career, another blinding blow comes her way.

It’s bad enough being described as “sucking the soul” out of a fashion label by the founder, but now Neiman Marcus and Net-A-Porter have dropped Ungaro for spring 2010 (that’s Lindsay’s collection if you’ve been in a fashion slumber for the past few months).

We would advise Ms Lohan to go back to the acting day job but considering her recent roles have been as successful as her fashion debut we fear this may only make things worse.

Perhaps a career away from the limelight might be the best option Lindsay.

Luella reduces prices to sell off stock

By Andrea Petrou on November 12th, 2009

Luella Fall 09.jpgWe’re still reeling from the news that Luella has lost it’s financial backing, but it seems there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for bargain hunters.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re still really upset that the fashion world has, for now, lost such a talented designer, but we can’t help rejoicing the fact that the sudden collapse has bought on a mamouth Luella sale (we blame the credit crunch for our selfishness).

Many items online including purses, bags and dresses have been slashed by more than 50%, making this the designer bargain hunters sale of the year.

And to make up for our greed, we’re more than happy to join the Save Luella campaign on Facebook. We feel redeemed already.

Government announces regulations to stop rogue modelling agencies

By Andrea Petrou on November 12th, 2009

model.jpgIt’s finally happened. The Government has woken up and taken note that many of you are still being scammed by rogue modelling agencies.

It announced this week that it’s introducing new rules banning agencies from taking upfront fees from models, following concerns that some agencies are charging exorbitant amounts without any likelihood of securing people castings or work.

This isn’t the first time the Government has waded into this industry. Last year it introduced a seven day cooling off period for up front fees, similar to the ones you might find on an electricity contracts. However this has fallen on deaf ears with some unscrupulous scouts continuing regardlessly.

But the Government has now toughened up.

Under the new regulations that will come into force during 2010, agencies that break the law could face prosecution and courts can impose unlimited fines for the most serious offences. Owners of rogue agencies could also be banned from operating for up to ten years. As the Government will be going after the agency owners it means they will be prevented from opening up under a new name.

We spoke to the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, which told us the move was based on the ” recurring number of complaints from the public,” but the media also had a key part in “highlighting” the problem.

Of course we can’t take all the credit, as we know many mags and newspapers have been talking about this for a while. However, we think we deserve a small pat on the back after we once again bought this, so far, never ending problem back into the spotlight.

Last month I carried out some research (read the full story here) into the grimy world of faux modelling agencies, whose tactics include pouncing, sorry, “scouting” you in the street and enticing you into parting with your cash by offering you a range of too good to be true deals.

As I found out, nothing in life is as good as it looks, especially when it comes to being offered a modelling contract when your more the size of a rat than the traditional size zero mouse, and had I gone ahead with the deal I would have been left well over £500 out of pocket.

Following this weeks announcement I’ve tried to get in touch with the agency that scouted me to see what it had to say, quelle surprise, “no one [was] available for comment.”

We’re thrilled that something is finally being done about agencies like this , but we warn you not to let your guard down too quickly. We advise you to read contracts carefully and investigate the company as much as possible. Like with that pesky black sock that always gets in with the white wash, we can be sure some rogue agencies will sneak in and use as many tactics as possible to get your money.

Let us know if you’ve had a bad experience with a rogue modelling agency by leaving a comment below.

Why won’t Ugg boots die?

By Andrea Petrou on November 12th, 2009

ugg.jpg

/>Lauren Bravo writes:
Ah, winter. The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling, there’s a chill in the air. We’re waking up to the kind of mornings where you want to get dressed under the covers. Suddenly layering stops being a style statement and becomes a survival tactic – in my house particularly, where we forgo central heating for the less expensive option of dressing like the Michelin Man.

But we can’t complain – this season, fashion has furnished us well. Designers have given us cocoon coats, chunky knits, even that mutant aberration of the dressing-up box, the snood, is back to give our chilly necks a hug. “If only”, you find yourself thinking, “there were some sort of fleece-lined bootie to complete the ensemble. If only I had a shoe so padded that it took my outfit beyond mere realms of clothing, into that of being an actual walking cushion.

“But wait… didn’t we once have footwear like that? If memory serves, it wasn’t so long ago. Indeed, there it is, calling from the back of the wardrobe… like an old, water-stained friend, just yearning to be tramped through the rocky terrain of the Hebrides… or Hampstead… or Jack Wills…” But no! Resist! In the name of all that is holey (sic), PUT THE UGGS DOWN.

Now, I hate to bring this up just when your toes are needing the most insulation, but it has to be said. If ever a clothing item has outstayed its welcome, it is the fated Ugg. Like the boring guest that lingers on long after the party is over, those sheepskin boots have been popping up on our streets year after year, oblivious to the fact they haven’t really been stylish since before Emma Watson hit puberty. I regard them as the flipflop’s winter counterpart – predictable, aesthetically unappealing and a total waste of a shoe opportunity. Why won’t they just lie down and die?

Their place in the hall of fashion fame was dubious from the start. Sienna Miller has a lot to answer for, we know, but even she couldn’t have predicted the gusto with which the women of Britain would take such an unlikely contender to their hearts. Maybe it’s because we all secretly want to wear slippers in the street. Perhaps it’s because we’ve all idly wondered what it would look like to chop off our own feet and replace them with those of Winnie the Pooh.

Or maybe, and here is my Big Theory of the Week, it’s because we’ve become so blinkered when it comes to shopping that we can no longer recognise the ridiculous when it’s sitting on the end of our own limbs. Ugg adversaries have been pointing out for years now that the clue is in the name, but that just isn’t reason enough.

Because fashion loves ugly. It thrives on ugly. Season after season, utility fashion returns to the catwalks and bizarre, bulky purchases return to our wardrobes. Parkas, waders, polo necks, peg-leg trousers. The kind of clothes that make even the most self-confident shopper wonder, quietly, in the corner of an Urban Outfitters changing room, whether it’s all been cooked up as a big joke just to see how far we will go.

Think of Cheryl Cole in that black metal fan affair a few Saturdays back. Think of Madonna at the Met Costume Institute gala. Think of Agnyess Deyn in pretty much anything. We can seek out flattering hemlines and complimentary colours all we like, but the quickest way to earn fashion kudos is always going to be to find something hideous and wear it with aplomb.

But there are two crucial keys to ugly style: firstly, limit it to one item per outfit, and balance it with something genuinely attractive. And secondly, know when to let it go. Uggs, your days are numbered. I know some biker ankle boots that could totally take you down.

Do you want Ugg boots banished? Leave your comments below and let us know.

Blake’s barnet claimed to be this season’s must have style

By Andrea Petrou on November 12th, 2009

blake.jpgMove over Jennifer Aniston and Victoria there’s a new hairstyle trend setter in town.

According to The Cut, Gossip Girl Blake Lively has taken the crown for this seasons must have locks, with hairstylists across America claiming her tresses are the new “Rachel.”

The Times has also said everyone wants her “extra long, ultra-shiny blond with a mussed-up tussle frolicking through the ends.”

We think it’s time to get the peroxide and curling tongs out.

Emanuel Ungaro brands Lindsay Lohan’s designs for the fashion house as “a disaster”

By Andrea Petrou on November 11th, 2009

Lins.jpgIt seems Emanuel Ungaro is moving to disassociate himself with Lindsay Lohan’s terrible attempt at designing for the brand.

He described the collection, shown at last month’s Paris fashion week a “disaster”

“I am furious but I can’t do anything about it,” he told reporters at a film festival in Lisbon.
Ungaro, who has not had any dealings with the fashion brand since he left in 2005, also warned the fashion house “is in the process of losing its soul.”

Despite Lindsay’s damage we really hope the brand doesn’t go down the same sad road as Luella. Losing one huge designer is bad enough.

X-Factor: What Stacey Solomon wore last Saturday

By Andrea Petrou on November 11th, 2009

Stacey.jpgWe really hope Stacey doesn’t get booted out of X-Factor this weekend. After Lucie’s shocking exit, we need some girl power and we also want to continue writing about the contestants outfits.

We must admit we were shocked at how good Stacey looked last week in her PVC and leather get up, which, as the judges put it, made her look incredibly sexy. Not many girls would be able to pull off the PVC legging look in such a stylish manner, but if you want to give it a go then head down to Topshop where you can find exactly the same pair.

Continue the look by visiting Vila Mode for Stacey’s dress, Topshop for her shoes and Mawi for her bracelet. Oh, and keep voting so we can continue to see the budding popstar showing off her outfits every week.

Smart Christmas outfits for posh parties

By Andrea Petrou on November 11th, 2009

We’ve been inspired by the outfits Lara wore in her Vogue photoshoot and it’s really given us a feel for Christmas party outfits.

At some point in the month, or even perhaps New Years Eve, we’ll have to put on more than a pair of jeans to go to a party, especially if its a big posh do. But we know finding an outfit that doesn’t look too mumsy or too over the top can be hard.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of smart Christmas party outfits, which will have you looking like the stylish belle of the ball, and remember, you don’t have to wear a long frock to look the posh part either.

Lara Stone poses in a range of ball gowns for British Vogue

By Andrea Petrou on November 11th, 2009

Model Lara Stone is clearly putting her stamp on the fashion world.

She’s been signed up as the face of Louis Vuitton and now we’ve come across this gorgeous fashion shoot she’s done for the December edition of UK Vogue.

Shot by Mario Testino, Lara wears a range of satin, silk and feathered ball gowns with fitted bodices, which we think really brings home what Christmas party outfits are all about.

We can’t wait to get hold of a copy, but here’s a few of the pictures to keep you going until then.

River Island teams up with celebrities to create t-shirts for charity

By Andrea Petrou on November 11th, 2009

Pixie.jpg

Get a celebrity styled T-shirt and do your bit for charity (can it get any better that this?).
Head down to River Island now where Alesha Dixon, Pixie Lott and Kelly Roland have been working with the retailer’s young designers to refashion T-shirts into mini dresses and rock tees in aid of the Princes Trust.

We’ve had a sneaky look at the collection and have fallen in love with the zebra print fringed creation by Pixie, who said: “My T-shirt dress is everything it should be – cheeky, fun and cool.” We quite agree.

The T-shirts are available online now and in-store from Friday. But hurry as we have a feeling these celebrity creations won’t be hanging around for long

Luella ceases trading

By Andrea Petrou on November 10th, 2009

Luella.jpgWe’ve been sitting here in shock after hearing that investors Club 21 have walked away from it’s financing agreement with Luella, causing the designer brand to cease trading.

According to WWD, in a joint statement, VSQ Limited, the subsidiary of Club 21, said it had reluctantly “taken the decision not to invest further in its relationship with Luella Bartley Limited.”

There’s been a string of bad luck for the fashion designer, who has a large fan base including Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Lily Allen. Last month Luella’s key ready-to-wear producer was hit by the recession and the factory closed unexpectedly.

However, it’s not a final curtain call just yet, Luella has hinted that there may be knight in shining fashion armour. “We have a number of options open to us, and are considering these over the coming months,” she said. We’ll be waiting.
