Madonna signed up by Dolce and Gabbana’s 2010 campaign

By Andrea Petrou on November 10th, 2009

madonna.jpgMadonna may have been dumped for a younger model by Versace but the queen of pop has shown she still has it.

The popstar has been signed up by Dolce & Gabbana. Madge will front the brand’s spring 2010 campaign and has already shot the ads in Brooklyn with photographer Steven Klein.

The designers said in their blog: “As Dolce & Gabbana’s spring/summer 2010 collection returned to the Italian roots of the brand, evoking its strong heritage and revisiting iconic pieces such as the corset (the designer’s finale was composed solely of corsets) it seemed only fitting that Madonna, who embodies both the strong sensuality of the brand and who shares an Italian heritage with the designers should be the one to showcase the Sicilian inspired collection.”

It seems Madonna will still be remaining a Material Girl for the foreseeable future.

This season’s stylish watches

By Andrea Petrou on November 10th, 2009

Whatever trend you decide to follow this year, a smart or casual outfit would not be complete with a watch.

Over the years, these time keeping accessories have grown from plain to a full blown fashion statement with more and more designers focusing on these every season, and unless you own a Rolex (we know how much they must cost) we think its only right that you change this accessory with the rest of your clothes every season.

We’ve put together a gallery of this seasons top watches to help you tell the time in style.

Christmas party outfits: 80s sequins

By Andrea Petrou on November 10th, 2009

Christmas is fast approaching bringing with it the flurry of gifts, Christmas lists and unfortunately, pre festive party outfit panic.

Although we’ve had our Christmas list ready since August (what can we say? We know what we want), we are ashamed to admit we haven’t even thought about the outfits we’ll be donning for all the Christmas fun.

Therefore, for those who are as lax as we are, we’ll be putting together some Christmas outfit galleries in the the lead up to the festive month to help you celebrate in style. First up is the spangly 80s sequin look, which is perfect for a weekend party in a bar, club or smartish restaurant.

Stand out with this style by choosing unique accessories that suit your personality for a unique 80s sequined look.

Comet teams up with Lulu Guinness to bring style to our kitchen worktops

By Andrea Petrou on November 10th, 2009

exclusive-comet-lulu-toaster-1257797506.jpgWe know we usually give you news and ideas about clothing and accessories but fashion isn’t about what you wear, it’s about every part of your life. Whether it be your car, pet or household furnishings everything you own reflects your style.

While we’re not telling you to go and buy an extortionately priced car or hire the latest interior designer, we do recommend you hot foot it down to Comet now.

Yes we know, its hardly a place you originally associate with the hip and happening but, what if we told you the retailer has teamed up with kooky designers Lulu Guinness.

The collaboration features our favourite Lulu iconic lip design, which has been previously sported on many a celeb including Katy Perry and Sophie Ellis Bextor via rings and handbags. And it’s now made an appearance on a limited edition toaster a meaning you can make your toast in style.

Lulu Guinness said “I am delighted to team up with Comet on this project and thrilled with the design. This is the first time I’ve designed a something for the kitchen and I am excited to think of the toaster sitting in people’s homes, adding a bit of fun and glamour to their everyday activities.”

Although Lulu isn’t the first designer to move into the electrical market (fashionistas will know all about Cath Kidston’s designs for Roberts radio), we can’t wait to get our hands on the appliance, which is available online now and in stores from 13th November.

We’ll most definitely be seeing you in the queue.

How to do a perfect DIY pedicure

By lotte on November 9th, 2009

pedicure feet image.jpgWhen’s the last time you paid for a pedicure? What with the unfortunate combination of peep-toe boots being in fashion and a recession going on, more and more of us are opting for a home pedicure over going to a salon. Professional pedicures usually cost about £20, and since most of us have a lot of the items you need for one at home, or can buy it all for under £10, it seems a bit silly to waste your money. It’s also a relaxing way to spend forty-five minutes – especially since you get a foot soak out of it.

Although you might not be planning to bare your toes in public much until the party season, it’s always nice to get out of bed in the morning and admire your own feet. So here are some essential tips for a successful DIY pedicure. Follow these steps for feet to be proud of, even if you won’t be showing them off during the day.

Tip 1: Make sure you get rid of any nail varnish left over from the summer holidays.
You need to start with a clean foot, so use a cotton wool pad soaked in nail polish remover and clean off all leftover polish really thoroughly.

Tip 2: Have a nice relaxing foot soak.
Fill up a bowl with warm water and some essential oil, like lavender or peppermint. You can soak your feet for just five minutes, but if you’ve had a long day, you’ll probably want to leave them in there for more like half an hour. The more hard skin there is on your feet, the longer you’ll need to soak them for.

Tip 3: Use cuticle oil, one foot at a time.
Take one of your feet out of the water, dry it off and cut the nails straight across with clippers. Then massage in some cuticle oil, pushing back your cuticles with a wooden cuticle stick (to get rid of any dead skin stuck to your nail). Put that foot back in the water, and do the same to the other foot.

Tip 4: Scrub away at the dead skin.
Use exfoliator, concentrating on the bits of your feet that have the most callouses. (Not pleasant, I know.) Then, after you’ve rinsed off all the little scratchy bits of exfoliator, use a foot file to get rid of any stubborn areas of hard skin. Make sure you file in one direction, like when you file your nails, and don’t scrub too hard – we know you hate that dead skin, but if your foot goes red you’re doing it wrong.

Tip 5: Apologise to your feet for all the exfoliating by massaging them with foot cream.
Try one that’s intensively moisturising. If you really want to treat your feet, use a foot mask beforehand.

Tip 6: Add some festive nail polish.
Before painting your nails, go over them again with nail varnish remover to get rid of any oils leftover from the footbath. Then apply a basecoat, two coats of polish, and a topcoat (use toe separators if you want). Go for a dark nail varnish shade, like black, navy blue, grey or burgundy for toenails that go with everything, or try a brighter shade of pink or orange if you’re planning on wearing a lot of black this winter.

Tip 7: Don’t put your shoes on straight away.
Remember to let the varnish fully dry before getting dressed! Or you could end up with socks that are stuck to your toenails.

Tip 8: Enjoy your new, beautiful feet.
To keep your varnish looking as fresh as possible, you can apply a coating of clear varnish every three days (although this is optional). Most salons recommend having a pedicure once a month, and once you’ve got everything you need for a DIY pedicure, there’s nothing stopping you from doing it that often at home, too.

Get the look: Cheryl Cole’s X-Factor ring

By Andrea Petrou on November 9th, 2009

chryl.JPGWe never thought we’d be able to afford anything Cheryl Cole wore on the X-Factor, especially her jewellery but it seems as though all our Christmases have come at once.

Last night the style icon appeared on the show without her wedding ring but instead a stunning ring (aptly named On the Rocks) from the Daniel Swarovski 20th anniversary collection.

We must say we were eyeing it up with a certain amount of jealousy, but now we know we can buy it for £303, we’re much happier. It’s definitely something we’ll be putting on our Christmas list.

Be a brolly belle, coordinate your umbrella with your outfit

By Andrea Petrou on November 9th, 2009

Vision - Star.gifYou may be wondering why we’ve featured a fashionable umbrella gallery. We know what you’re thinking; an umbrella is a an umbrella right? It doesn’t matter what colour it is as long as it does the job. Well that’s where you’re wrong.

Many years ago, having an umbrella that matched your outfit, or had some fashionable connotations was just as important as having the right bag or shoes for an outfit.
Although this trend has simmered out over the years (unless you live in Japan, which has carried this trend on) many of us still find it important to do this.

We give you a few tips to ensure your umbrella makes as much as a statement as the rest of your outfit.

Gallery: Quirky, fun and fashionable umbrellas

By Andrea Petrou on November 9th, 2009

It’s that time of year again. The nights get darker, the wind a little stronger and the rain plummets down whenever it possibly can. Yes, that’s right, winter is well and truly settling in.

While we can deal with the darkness (there’s street lamps for that) and the wind (that’s what winter coats and gloves are for) the rain is a different matter completely.

Not only does it soak the bottom of our jeans and seep through the tiny holes in last years boots but it also plays havoc with the hair.

We have a look at the top fashionable and quirky superhero umbrellas defending against our winter rival.

Get the look: Dannii’s X-Factor grecian style dress

By Andrea Petrou on November 9th, 2009

Dannii.jpgWe’ve concentrated so much on Cheryl over the past few weeks that we’ve neglected to mention how good Dannii looks on this year’s X-Factor.

However after her stylish appearances on both Saturday’s and Sunday’s shows, we feel she really deserves to be mentioned in our X-Factor style series.

While Cheryl opted for little dresses in black and red for both days, Dannii really shone through with a white Grecian off the shoulder frock on Saturday, which was designed by Ralph and Russo.

The 1970′s inspired white silk dress, which had a thigh high split and swarovski crystal buckled shoulder sash, cost a bank breaking £1950, but we’ve had a hunt around and found this white frock with a corsage strap from Debenhams, which won’t have you begging for an overdraft at £100.

Team up with a belt and sew on some crystals for an X-Factor style look.

Scarlett Johansson poses for Dolce and Gabbana fragrances

By Andrea Petrou on November 9th, 2009

Dolce & Gabbana Fragrance Scarlett.jpgScarlett Johansson is no stranger to the world of modelling and over the year has signed up for a range of lucrative shoots, including modelling a collection for Mango.

However, this time Scarlett has left the highstreet behind and taken on a far bigger project in the shape of Dolce and Gabbana.

The actress has become the new face of the brand’s The One and L’eau The One fragrances, and we’re sure you’ll agree, that once again she pulls off the shoot, shot by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, perfectly.

Gallery: Get Zooey Deschanel’s retro red carpet look on a budget

By lotte on November 6th, 2009
2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards - Arrivals

We love Zooey Deschanel’s kooky dress sense at ShinyStyle, and although she’s not exactly a household name yet, she probably will be soon. Her last film 500 Days of Summer put her alongside indie film darling Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and while she earns even more cool points for being in a band, it’s her personal style that really sets her apart from most other actresses. Her trademark bows, retro dresses and fringe (think Katy Perry, only a lot better) make it hard to believe she’s nearly 30 – and proves there’s no need to stop dressing in a cute way just because you’re out of your teens.

We’re guessing she’s a fan of Luella, Karen Walker and Erin Fetherston, but you can get a similar look for much less – just remember to look in vintage stores too for retro accessories that Zooey would love.

Alexandra Burke photographed for Wonderland in black leather and eyeliner

By lotte on November 6th, 2009

Reality stars are making more and more of an impression in the rarified world of fashion magazines. Alexandra Burke has been shot for the December ‘British talent’ issue of Wonderland magazine by Mariano Vivanco, following in the footsteps of previous X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, who made the cover of i-D Magazine last December. Cheryl Cole was on the cover of UK Vogue earlier this year, another former reality star who’s gained credibility in the fashion industry. And who could forget Susan Boyle in Harper’s Bazaar (that one’s a joke).

Alexandra looks great, but the edgy styling is the sort we’ve seen plenty of recently – black leather can only be so exciting. Let’s hope her next shoot is more original.

Dress down Friday: Nike Andy Warhol/Marilyn Monroe trainers

By Andrea Petrou on November 6th, 2009

Nike.jpgIf you’re looking for casual footwear with an arty difference then you’ll love these limited edition pop art Nike trainers.

The Nike Air Max 90 Andy Warhol/Marilyn Monroe trainer is a perfect accessory to a denim skirt, leggings or skinny jeans, and brings the current 80′s look right into the 21st century.

We love the way Nike has made it’s standard trademark trainer really stand out here, and despite our previous cripes about an air bubble looking too sporty, will definitely invest in these, soon to be one of a kind trainers.

Lady Gaga poses for Flare Magazine

By Andrea Petrou on November 6th, 2009

Lady Gaga has not got the music world going crazy, but she’s also the talk of the fashion world. Her wacky, kooky style has earned her a place on magazine style lists, ad campaigns and photoshoots.

Therefore the news that she has just finished a cover for Flare magazine’s December issue, which was shot by Max Abadian, really doesn’t come as a surprise.

As always Lady Gaga looks very much at home dressed in her trademark pants and sporting wild hair styles and head pieces and we have to grudgingly admit she looks gorgeous. We know if we tried to copy her style we’d end up being arrested.
