Celebrity fashion and beauty blunders 2009

By Andrea Petrou on December 22nd, 2009

It’s been a year full of events, celebrity tantrums and fashion and beauty disasters. We’ve had a smile, shed a tear at the number of talents we’ve lost (RIP Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze and Brittany Murphy) and had many “what was she thinking” moments when looking at some celebs attempts at beauty and fashion.

So to end the year, we’ve put together a list of celebrity beauty and fashion blunders that have made us cringe. And also added a gallery (click on the picture below the text to begin) so you can see exactly what we’re talking about. We hope you have a merry Christmas and we’ll be back in the new year to keep you updated on all the latest fashion news.

1. Fake tan
It was only last week we bought this criminal trend to light. The war of the fake tan has been going for many years but celebs have still not learnt that looking like an orangutan on the red carpet is not a good look.

2009 Devils
Offenders include Bianca Gascoigne and Brooke Hogan who both clearly believe that this is the way to success. However we say that looking like an Oompa Lumpa will only get you a job in a chocolate factory, and even then you may have trouble convincing Cadburys that you don’t have a radioactive disease.

2009 Angel

Victoria Beckham gets our fake tan seal of approval after she realised pale is far prettier than putrid orange and threw away those tanning bottles.

2. Choosing Lipo over exercise
While we think the best way to get that perfect body is through exercise and healthy eating (with a little bit of what you fancy for good measure) some of the celebrity population don’t agree, preferring to pay for a quick fix rather than do it themselves.

2009 Devils
Earlier this year both Kerry Katona, who shrunk to a tiny size 8, and Britney Spears went under the skinny knife to perfect their bodies. However, while Britney has kept the weight off, we think Kerry had something removed from her brain (namely the nerve that stops you eating shed loads of fatty foods) and is a shining example of why exercise and healthy eating is a better option. Take those delivery menus away from her!

2009 Angels
There are many stars who go for exercise rather than the knife but our special mention goes to UK home grown Charlotte Church. The mother of two shed her baby weight and slimmed down to a size 8 with the help of a personal trainer and nutritional advice from gorgeous Rugby star hubby Gavin Henson.

3. Size denial
While many a celeb wishes they were the “Hollywood” size zero, some (shock horror) are just that tiny bit over. We won’t be mentioning any names for fear we’ll send them straight into rehab, but we can’t resist having a go at the celebs that really are in denial here, squeezing themselves into those too small jeans, which they hope will grant them automatic inclusion into that size.

2009 Devils
We’re really sorry Kerry Katona, but squeezing yourself into those very early post lipo jeans will not magically take away the pounds gained from thoseIceland microwave meal freebies and loyalty points racked up from your favourite take away menus. Buy the correct size and we guarantee the days of lying on the floor struggling to zip up those jeans will be no more. And Jordan, a small breast reduction does not mean you’ll fit into that tiny A cup corset.

4. Flashing your pants
Every girl above the age of five knows that flashing your panties (especially the big ones) is not the way to attract that boy in your reception class or, if your a celeb, public admiration. So we haven’t been particularly enamoured with the range of people who have chosen to do this during 2009.

2009 Devils
Ahh Jordan, it seems you can’t keep anything a secret and we’re not just talking about your private life with Peter Andre. We’ve seen everything from G-strings to a slightly bigger variety. Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to air your dirty laundry in public? And Michelle Heaton, we know Jordan is your best friend and idol, but just because she does it, it doesn’t mean you have to. One scantily clad fake tanned bottom is more than enough for us thank you very much.

2009 Angels
We weren’t going to have an Angels category here but then we remembered Lady Gaga, who has made the pants as outerwear fashion (unfortunately) fashionable. We think these look great on the singer when she’s performing, we also think we should give a little mention to Eva Longoria Parker who posed for the cover of Citizen K in some big, flattering panties. However, we advise the rest of you to steer clear. And guys, it’s not an excuse to go all Superman style on us either.

5. Choosing a short dress over a classy long frock

We’re big fans of the LBD and similar styles but sometimes flashing your legs can lead to a whole heap of trouble, and if you’re a celebrity who likes an odd tipple then you could end up showing off more than just your pins. Likewise an ill fitting super mini may have you pulling it down all evening, making us think that long may just cut it on the red carpet or event.

2009 Devils
We know we’ll get lynched for saying this, but the award here goes to Sarah Jessica Parker (we know, we know, and we’re sorry) who demonstrated that short can sometimes be the wrong choice. The otherwise perfect fashionista hoiked up, and pulled down her super mini pink dress at the premier of Did You Hear about The Morgans? making her look uncomfortable and giving photographers an eyeful.

2009 Angels
We couldn’t do a 2009 round up without getting the X-Factor in here somewhere, and what better way to mention it than by giving a nod to Dannii Minogue’s long and elegant long dresses. The judge won our X-factor style war by opting for a range of classy, long Grecian style dresses over Cheryl’s experimental fashions.

6. Choosing Uggs over heels

We’ve championed Uggs for a good few years, and have to admit they came in very handy in yesterday’s snow. However, our columnist Lauren disagrees, and judging by the comments we received from you, we can see they really haven’t been the style du jour for a good few years.

2009 Devils
Sorry Stacey Solomon, we love your voice however your love of Uggs has most definitely earned you the right to be here. On the bright side at least you’ve made it into some kind of countdown chart.

2009 Angel
Who better to champion those heels than Sarah Jessica Parker (have we redeemed ourselves?). The Sex and the City Starlet, who showed girls like us worldwide has hit the streets or 2009 in a range of heels that have had us stamping our feet with envy. We also think Victoria Beckham should get a mention here too. She may need surgery caused by her love of sky scraper heels, but despite this the fashion princess has continued to wear her trademark shoes opting for foot exercises to help her recover.

X-Factor starlet Lucie Jones gets signed up to Select Model Management

By Andrea Petrou on December 22nd, 2009

Lucie Jones.jpgWe felt a little bit sorry for X-Factor contestant Lucie Jones after she was voted off in favour of the Jedward twins, but the singer has shown what being on TV can do for your career.

The singer has had a surprising new development to her future after it was announced that she’d been signed up by signed by Select Model Management.

Chrissie Castagnetti, co-founder of the agency, which has a number of supermodels on its books said: “As soon as we saw Lucie, we recognised that she had a great look.

‘As her confidence grew and her personality came through, we knew we wanted to work with her. We’re looking forward to unleashing her great potential.’

Of course the singer, who is set to shoot her portfolio in January, is thrilled.

‘I love fashion, I love beauty and I love singing, so to be able to model alongside my music is the best Christmas present ever. I can’t wait to get going next year,’ she said in an interview over the weekend.

Get the look: Victoria Beckham’s blue nail varnish

By Andrea Petrou on December 22nd, 2009

Victoria Blue.jpgVictoria Beckham has proved she’s one step ahead of the fashion pack for a while now and it seems nothing has changed.

The former Spice Girl was spotted sporting the up and coming blue nail varnish trend, which we have a sneaky suspicion will be gracing many a finger nail during New Years eve and into early 2010.

The trend follows on from autumn’s blue lipstick, which was hailed as the new colour by designers such as Vivienne Westwood, and although we haven’t really seen this take off across mainstream fashion, we think blue nails are a much safer bet.

Wear with a black top or with a contrasting colour for the ultimate 2010 look, and if you’re short of cash then we advise a walk in snow without gloves for that authentic blue nail look. Alternatively try Barry M’s varnish in cobalt £2.95.

Eva Longoria Parker to launch a perfume

By Andrea Petrou on December 22nd, 2009

Eva.jpgCelebrities have it all, but always need to go that little bit further, and it’s no different for Desperate Housewives star and face of L’Oreal Eva Longoria Parker.

The actress has announced she will be joining the rest of the celebrity clan and launching a fragrance, which she has said she hopes will suit everyone.

She told WWD: “I have always been somewhat allergic to all perfumes and really wanted to create something that every woman could wear.

“So I decided to create my own fragrance that is light, fresh and unique. I think the scent of a woman is extremely sexy and this scent will prove that.”

And now for the Science bit.

The perfume is said combine citrus, neroli, bergamot tea and aldehydes, followed by its core ingredients sheer jasmine, muguet, violet and freesia, finishing off with underlying tones of skin musk, amber and sandalwood.

It sounds a bit much to us, but we’ll have to wait until its launched next year, to tell you if its worth it.

Vivienne Westwood teams up with Lee to create a range of punky jeans

By Andrea Petrou on December 22nd, 2009

Vivienne Westwood.jpg

Jeans can be a little boring, especially if they are just the standard off the rack . However, one new line that promises to be the opposite is Vivienne Westwood’s range for Lee jeans.

According to WWD, the Vivienne Westwood Anglomania and Lee collection, will reflect the designer’s punky edgy style.

It will include superskinny jeans and microshorts for women, along with bondage jeans and skinny jeans for men. Washes will run from indigo denim to metallic gold- and copper-colored denim to denim printed with a trompe l’oeil lace design.

Carlo D’Amario, managing director of Vivienne Westwood said: “It is very important for us to work with a denim brand like Lee with such a strong heritage.”

It’s unknown when the range will hit the shops but when they do prices will range from £80 to £200. We better get saving then.

Lara Stone: “People still tell me I’m fat, but when I look in the mirror, that’s not what I see.”

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

Lara Stone for Louis Vuitton.jpg

It seems as though our rage against size zero models is set to continue today, with news that Lara Stone still gets criticised for being a bigger model.

The size 8 stunner who used to refer to herself as “the fat one,” before accepting her size, told Vogue: “People still tell me I’m fat, but when I look in the mirror, that’s not what I see.”

Lara may be a healthy cut above the rest of the size zero models and with a range of successful modelling campaigns under her belt including her latest venture with Louis Vuitton, you’d think the industry would be proud to have such an inspiration. However the skinny tunnel vision of stylists and designers still haunt her.

She told Vogue: “It’s depressing when the clothes don’t fit and you are always the odd one out…I was on a shoot last week and the stylist took out this tight corset dress and said, ‘Here, put it on,’ and I was like, ‘Who are you kidding?’ There was no way, so that was very rude of her. It’s like, come on, she’s a woman; whether you’re buying jeans at the mall, or wearing couture, you know what it’s like for clothes not to fit. It’s not an easy kind of rejection, because it’s very personal. It’s you, you’re body. You take it personally.”

We really hope the industry wakes up and gets a grip on the way we all should look and Lara, like our other bigger celebrity and model role models should be an inspiration to us all.

Gallery: Inspirational plus size celebrities and models

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

After reporting on Selfridges latest move to stop stocking plus size clothes we thought it was only right to show the retailer that we’re all not twiglets.

In the past few years a range of Hollywood celebs have shunned the size zero look and showed us that being a normal weight is perfectly acceptable.

Plus size models have also been on the covers of magazines and on the catwalk.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of these inspirational women and we will be sending a link to Selfridges too.

Selfridges turns its back on plus size clothes

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

Plus size.jpgJust as we thought the fashion world had woken up and accepted plus size women, it seems we’ve gone a step back.

Last week Selfridges announced it was dropping it’s plus size Marina Rinaldi range, which has sizes from 14 to 26, as according to The News of The World, it “doesn’t fit their image.”

The clothing range, founded in 1980 for ‘curvy women’, was taken out of stores two weeks ago to make space for slimmer lines meaning the largest size available on many fashion lines is now a 16 or 18 at a push.

Anita Barr, Director of Womenswear and Childrenswear at Selfridges said: ‘It’s true we no longer stock Marina Rinaldi, however Selfridges is constantly updating its brand mix.

‘This is also reflected in the sizing we offer. At present customers can find sizes up to a UK 18 in store.’

We think this is a disgraceful move by the well known retailer especially since half the women in the country are size 16 and above. We just hope other stores don’t take on the same approach. Tell us what you think about this by leaving your comments below.

RIP Brittany Murphy

By Andrea Petrou on December 21st, 2009

clueless.jpgWe loved Clueless when it first came out and so did the fashion world. And it inspired the 1995 style, which was all about the preppy look, checked skirts and knee high socks, and home make overs also became a key night in. So we’re absolutely devastated to hear the sad news of Brittany Murphy’s death.

The 32 year old actress who played the quirky Tai in the film and endeared us with her red rinse and bushy brows, was reportedly found unconscious in the shower by her mother after suffering a full cardiac arrest early Sunday morning. She was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre but was unable to be revived.

An investigation is being carried out into the 8 Mile and Sin City actresse’s death but rumours have surfaced that the actress had been addicted to prescription drugs. Brittany’s mother also said her daughter was a type 2 diabetic.

And it’s not just us who are upset about the news. The actresses celebrity friends have also been paying tribute to her on Twitter. Former boyfriend and co-star Ashton Kutcher, said: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. See you on the other side kid.”

Jessica Simpson said: “Brittany Murphy was an incredible ray of Light to so many people. Her smile was contagious. My prayers are with her family and loved ones.”

Our thoughts go out to all the star’s friends and family.

Kelly Brook shows us how to wear winter warmers in style during the snowy weather

Kelly B.jpg

Kelly Brook shows us how to stay warm in style during this snowy weather.

The presenter and actress was seen leaving the theatre, where she is currently starring in Calender Girl’s, in a knee length black woven coat, Ugg style wedge ankle boots with cute pom poms and of course her Chanel bag.

She also showed Winter hair doesn’t have to be drab with a cute blue headpiece, which we think is a perfect way to keep your hair in place throughout the windy days.

Lily Cole has come along way since her first modelling stint all those years ago, branching out into film and taking on a degree. However, she still has time for what she’s known to do the best and thats striking a pose.

Riding the buzz of her debut film venture, Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the model poses for the January edition of Interview Magazine showing off the legs that made her famous in Marc Jacobs and Jean Yu.

We especially love the bold bright make up against her pale skin here, which shows you don’t have to be tanned to look amazing.

Alexa Chung confirms the cancellation of her MTV show

By Andrea Petrou on December 18th, 2009

Alexa ChungWe have a lot of respect for Alexa Chung here at ShinyStyle, so we’re a little bit upset that the kooky fashion starlet has now officially confirmed that her On with Alexa, MTV show is over.

Alexa posted the news via Twitter yesterday, saying: “Today was our last ever show. Thanks so much to everyone who watched, for those of you who didn’t – you missed out. Xx”

There has been quite a bit of speculation as to the circumstances of the cancellation after just two seasons, one was that she had got too skinny during the filming (this was later rubbished by her management company).

However, with her contract with MTV continuing until next year and the channel claiming future plans are being left open, we’re sure we’ll still be seeing a lot more of the presenter in the months to come.
