Daisy Lowe designs a range for Swarovski Crystallized

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

Earrings.jpg
Not content with a successful modelling career, Daisy Lowe has followed in a long line of models, actresses and singers and turned to designing.

The starlet has teamed up with Swarovski Crystallized to create a limited edition jewellery collection, which has been inspired by the model’s love of fire, wind, water, earth and spirit all of which are depicted by a five pointed star.

Each item, including bracelets, necklaces and earrings will therefore have this incorporated in one form or another.

Daisy said: “I have always been inspired by the earth and solar system – especially moons and stars, which is why I used them as inspiration when designing my collection for Swarovski Crystallized.”

We can’t say we’re surprised Daisy chose to work with this brand. She’s been a fan of the company’s creations for a while. Recently she worked a number of Swarovski Crystallized pieces on the front rows of London’s Fashion Week’s hottest shows.

The range will be available from January with prices ranging from £52 to £90. However, you’d better get your skates on as there’s already a waiting list.

The Sugababes model purple scarves in aid of Fight Cervical Cancer in Style

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

sugar-babes-1259795690.jpgThe Sugababes have teamed up with a range of designers to raise awareness about cervical cancer.

Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and newest member of the Sugababes, Jade Ewen, will front the Fight Cervical Cancer in Style campaign. They have also modelled a limited edition purple Fight Cervical Cancer in Style scarf designed by Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker of British fashion emporium PPQ.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Heidi Range said: “Having performed at Jade Goody’s wedding, cervical cancer is a subject we feel passionately about. We are proud to be supporting the campaign as it is important that girls and women realise how they could catch the virus that causes cervical cancer, as well as the steps they could take to reduce their risk.”

And now for the medical bit.

Many women believe that cervical cancer is hereditary, however, almost all cases are caused by a common virus called HPV (human papillomavirus). The virus can be passed on through sexual contact, therefore girls and women are at risk as soon as they start having intimate relationships. The virus is usually cleared naturally by the immune system but sometimes it persists and could lead to cervical cancer.

Currently, eight women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and nearly three women die of the disease every day in the UK. It’s the most common cancer in women aged 20-29 and the second most common cancer in women under 35 years old. It is therefore important that girls and women are made aware of the risks of cervical cancer and the best ways to reduce their risk, including a healthy lifestyle, cervical screening and vaccination against HPV (human papillomavirus).

We think this is a fantastic cause and will definitely be buying one of the scarves to show our support.

Lily Allen announces she’s opening up a boutique

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

Lily A.jpgIt was only earlier this week when we predicted Lily Allen would venture into fashion, and, we’re pleased to say we were right.

The singer, who has previously designed a range for New Look and had an input in Chanel’s creations, as well as a range of modelling jobs under her belt, announced to today on Radio 1 that she will not be performing for a few years so she can concentrate on opening a boutique.

Lily told Sara Cox that she will be working with her sister and plans to open a store called Lucy In Disguise, which aims to make designer labels more accessible to cash strapped fashionistas.

The idea behind it is that we’ll be able to visit the store, choose a look and hire it out.

“It’s about getting really nice clothes but letting people rent them for affordable prices so they can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won’t cost them a million dollars,” Lily said.

We think it’s a fantastic idea.

Christmas party outfits: Flat shoes

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

We don’t know about you, but when we think about Christmas parties the third thing that comes into our mind after drink and dancing is the pain we’ve got from wearing our high heels.

We know heels are an essential part of the Christmas outfit, and we’ve even done a gallery with the best skyscraper heels out there. Yes we know, were glutton’s for punishment.

Although we included a pair of flat shoes in there for after the copious amounts of champagne, there are some girls, who would rather just be comfortable all night. We’ve therefore put together a gallery of the best flat shoes out there, which will ensure you look stylish as well as keeping you comfortable.

Why classic clothes should remain at the back of the wardrobe

By Andrea Petrou on December 3rd, 2009

classic.jpgLauren Bravo writes: There are few places I like to see the word ‘classic’. Classic cars, Penguin Classics, maybe a classic episode of Have I Got News For You. But generally, any place you find the word ‘classic’ is not a place I want to be. ‘Classic’ denotes dull. ‘Classic’ means “first thing we came up with, couldn’t be arsed to make it more exciting”. That’s how it is with crisps, that’s how it is with shower gel and that’s how it is with clothes. Yes, this week I would like to launch the backlash on ‘classic’ wardrobe items – or, as the phenomenon shall be known, The Curse of the Plain White Shirt.

It’s one of those oh-so-helpful nuggets of advice that we girls are raised on, along with rubbing half a lemon on your elbows and wearing Vaseline with socks to bed. Women’s magazines have been peddling this myth for decades. For some, at the Woman’s Weekly/Essentials/Good Housekeeping end of the scale, it’s their bread and butter, making an appearance on a pretty much monthly basis; but even the savvier glossies are guilty of dredging it up from time to time. The legend goes something like this: “Every woman should own a plain white shirt. That is the secret of happiness.”

“Furthermore,” the myth continues, “every well-dressed wardrobe should be built on a foundation of ‘classic’ items (or, if they’re really devout, they’ll use that other word, the one that’s worse than classic – ‘basic’. Yeuch). These classic items should ideally be as expensive as you can afford, and as boring as you can bear. In addition to the plain white shirt, you must have: a beige trench coat, a grey cashmere sweater, a pair of straight-cut jeans, and a black shift dress. Then, and only then, will you be complete as a woman.”

So colossal is the wrongness of this theory that I’m not quite sure where to start, but the white shirt seems as good a place as any. There are 30 million women in the world, and of those 30 million, about 12 look good in a plain white shirt. For the rest of us, the results veer along an increasingly unflattering spectrum from School Prefect to Apprentice Contestant, via Checkout Assistant in BHS. White shirts present a minefield of staining risks, gaping issues and the eternal bra conundrum (the magazines say flesh coloured, but then the magazines HATE US. Who should we trust?).

Likewise the trench coat. A better suggestion, maybe, if we could have it in teal, or purple, or a nice cheery red. But no, ‘classic’ items tend to occupy a narrow colour palette. That is, beige. Beige and its deformed sisters, fawn, camel and stone. While we all have occasional mac fantasies (I favour Big Mac fantasies), of running through Parisian streets in pursuit of a lost balloon or something equally charming, we know the truth. The only time you’ll ever have fun in a trench coat is when you’re naked underneath it on someone’s doorstep. Or if you’re a spy.

Then there’s the black shift dress, an item we can thank Audrey Hepburn for bestowing on us and Princess Di for perpetuating. Shift dresses are a nice idea. So chic! So subtle yet sexy! What a shame then, that they appear not to have been designed to clothe the female figure but an Ikea flatpack shelving unit. Shift dresses hug the bits you want to forget, hang over the bits you want to hug, and squeeze that little pocket of underarm flab out to say hello when you thought you’d banished it forever.

There is also something unavoidably smug about wearing a shift dress. However much you try to Gok it up with jazzy accessories, it will always look uncomfortably corporate. It’s a look that says ‘I head up a successful sales team, do yoga in my lunch hour, bake nutritious dishes for my five pristine children and never chip a nail on my Blackberry’. And until I either accomplish all of those things, or become Audrey Hepburn, it’s a ‘classic’ I won’t be investing in one any time soon.

So the magazines can try as they might, I am not falling for it. Happiness takes many different forms, but I’m pretty sure I can live a long and fulfilling life without needing a plain white shirt in it. The day a ‘classic’ garment enters my wardrobe will be the day I forget how to have fun. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to rub lemons on my elbows and have an early night. Pip pip.

Gallery: Eco-friendly winter fashion

By lotte on December 2nd, 2009

Ever feel eco-guilt over marching out of Primark, arms weighed down by thirty quid’s worth of tops and dresses you might only wear a few times? Us too. But there is a way to feel better: if we all cut down on disposable fashion and chose eco-friendly clothes every now and again, the world would probably heave a little sigh of relief (and so would we).

Not that we’re trying to guilt-trip you. Ethical shopping can be just as enjoyable as a trip down the high street – the only difference is you’ll have to do most of the shopping online instead. Everyone’s aware that there’s loads of choice on offer these days, but you might not know where to look, so we’ve compiled a gallery of some of our favourite ethical clothes on sale now, to suit most budgets. Some are fair trade, while others use sustainable or organic fabrics, and all of our picks make a lesser impact on the planet.

It’s a good idea to go for more classic designs when picking eco-friendly fashion, since the point of it is to invest rather than buy something you won’t wear in a year’s time. Our picks are the sort of items of clothing that have timeless cool.

Hopefully it will inspire you to look slightly more further afield for your next fashion fix. Make sure you check out the online stores we’ve featured. (And don’t forget second hand is just as good, so hit up the charity or vintage shops too this winter.)

Alicia Keys wears Cavalli on the cover of her new album

By lotte on December 2nd, 2009

Alicia Keys in Cavalli.jpg Roberto Cavalli’s colourful and flamboyant designs are not for everyone, but Alicia Keys, one of his most loyal celebrity fans, has chosen a Cavalli dress to wear on the cover of her new album ‘The Element of Freedom’ (out in two weeks).

We’d love to get our hands on a Cavalli dress, but the closest we’ve come to owning one was through the H&M collaboration he did two years ago. For now it’s enough just to lust over the likes of fringed dresses and diamante-encrusted platform sandals from his last collection.

Other celeb fans include Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who love him for his ultra-sexy dresses. Surprisingly, he’s toned down this trademark glamour in his collections in recent years – his spring/summer 2010 catwalk show was even labelled ‘conceptual’ by one fashion writer, and featured lots of decidedly unsexy layering. We think Alicia’s choice of a halter gown with attention-grabbing feathered collar is classic Cavalli. You can get a taste of the feather trend in lots of high street shops right now – try Asos and Topshop for a feathered skirt or hair accessory.

Sonia Rykiel pour H&M preview

By Andrea Petrou on December 2nd, 2009

If you haven’t already noticed we’ve got a lingerie theme going on today, apart from our Global Cool story, which is quite the opposite but, we’ll sure your agree is for a good cause.

So what better way to round up the theme with a sneak preview and video of Sonia Rykiel’s boudoir-inspired lingerie range for H&M.

We might have just got over the huge Jimmy Choo range for the highstreet store, but, as we all know fashion moves on as quickly as your other half when he spots the huge diamond ring you’re ogling at in the jewellers window.

The launch of this range was held last night at Paris’s Grand Palais for an extravagant show to unveil Sonia Rykiel’s the range. And what a launch it was. The fairytale themed show complete with a glittering Eiffel Tower, ferris wheel, swing set and cut-out trees strung with thousands of fairy lights, also featured Lily Cole, who held the reins of a giant moving horse head.

And it seems when the collection launches on Saturday, there may not be the mayhem we reported and timing complaints many of you told us about during the Jimmy Choo launch.

A spokesman for H&M told Grazia: “The Jimmy Choo launch was different because with accessories and shoes we gave people a specific area to try things on and limited numbers of product they could buy, but because this launch is a line of garments we don’t feel this is necessary, so there are no limits on what you can buy or try on.”

We can’t wait. View the video of last nights launch and click on the picture below for a sneak preview of the collection.

Debenhams launches PeachyBody pants, which are claimed to zap cellulite

By Andrea Petrou on December 2nd, 2009

Pants.jpgWe know we’ve been banging on about sexy undies today, and advising you stay away from the Bridget Jones style undies.

However, we’ve been thinking, and we know, if we had to wear a skimpy dress, after a few days of festive treats and drink we’d want something, that would, well, hold us in.

Therefore, it only seems fair we tell you about Debenhams’ revolutionary cellulite busting pants.

Yes, we know what you’re thinking, it looks like any other shapewear product on the market, but, these PeachyBody pants are claimed to have extra super powers. Not only will they hold you in but, they also claim to miraculously banish that unsightly orange peel, and make your waist, hips, thighs and bottoms appear slimmer, toned and moisturised in just 21 days.

But it’s not a miracle, it’s science that is claimed to do this. Apparently the wonder pants have a wave-weave knit system, which stimulates the skin and massages active ingredients into problem areas.

This includes a combination of peaches (to moisturise), green tea (to act as an antioxidant) and coffee beans (to eliminate excess water). These are said to warm the body and increase circulation of the blood, helping to break down fatty deposits.

And for £25 a pop its a much more sensible and cheaper alternative to going under the knife.

We really like the sound of these, and will definitely be trying them out. Keep reading for a review very soon.

Global Cool launches a range of videos to help us wrap up warm and keep the heating down

By Andrea Petrou on December 2nd, 2009

A host of top models, musicians and actors have teamed up with Global Cool to show UK fashionistas how wrapping up warm this winter can stop us from wasting money on home heating bills, benefit our health and save the planet.

According to the organisation, heating within the home accounts for 30 per cent of the average Brit’s carbon footprint, which is even more than cars produce at 26.1 per cent.

Figures show that for every one degree you turn your heating down, you could save up to £40 a year and go from burning 20 calories an hour to 80 calories an hour – all while you’re sleeping (well that’s a good enough reason for us).

’18 Degrees of Inspiration’ is the latest campaign launched by forward-thinking climate change charity Global Cool.

Its aim is to inspire the UK’s fash-pack to go easy on the heating this winter and keep thermostat temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius, by showing you how to wear this season’s latest knitwear trends at home in a range of different videos including designers such as Dolce and Gabanna, McQueen, Reiss, Jaeger, Arman Bassi One, Antipodium and Diesel. They give us an exclusive look inside each celebrity’s home as a stylist helps them create an outfit to suit their lives.

We love the video below featuring supermodel Laura Bailey who gets some winter warming tips from stylist Grace Woodward.

Global Cool’s Facebook fans can also win a new winter wardrobe in association with ASOS.com – simply upload a picture of yourself wearing your most stylish winter knits, get your friends to vote for you, and you could win £500 worth of vouchers! Go to www.facebook.com/globalcool

Peaches Geldof poses in undies for Ultimo while Elen Rives does the same for Tesco

By Andrea Petrou on December 2nd, 2009

Peaches.jpgIt seems we won’t be the only ones wearing matching lingerie this Christmas, with a range of new ad campaigns featuring celebs, hitting the market.

Peaches Geldof who is now the face of Ultimo’s Miss Ultimo line, showed off her fun and funky side posing on a merry-go-round in a range of Christmas lingerie numbers.

We love the playful styling, which includes bright coloured stockings and bows. However we think her daisy chain tattoos may be going a step too far.

Peaches said: “I’m honoured to be chosen to represent a healthy body image – and what better way than with Miss Ultimo’s designs, which are sexy, young and quirky.”

Meanwhile, across the highstreet pond, Tesco has just announced that ex wag Elen Rivas will be doing her first ever lingerie ad campaign for its Diamond Boutique range.

The former fiancée of Chelsea and England footballer Frank Lampard, has kicked off her modelling debut posing in a range of purse friendly lingerie for the Christmas collection, which comes comes in sizes 32A to 38D for bras and 8-18 for briefs and includes fabrics such as silks, satins and lace.

elen-rives- tesco.jpg

Elen said: “Diamond Boutique delivers everything a designer brand should. The designs are elegant, stylish and fit to perfection. What’s more, even if you buy the entire collection you won’t feel guilty as it’s so easy on the pocket. I wear the range every day, whether I’m off to the supermarket or glamming up for a night out.”

Terry Green, CEO of Tesco Clothing, said; “The new Diamond Boutique Christmas collection is incredibly luxurious, but continues our focus on value with prices starting from just £7.00. Elen is a great signing for the brand and proves that budget lingerie can look just as good as expensive designer lingerie.”

The new collection is available from Tesco stores nationwide and online.

Christmas party outfits and gifts: Lingerie

By Andrea Petrou on December 2nd, 2009

A Christmas outfit, shoes and make-up are all essential for that great party look, but many of us forget is that sometimes it’s whats inside that counts too.

No, we haven’t turned into a self help website, we’re talking about your underwear.

Not only does wearing a matching pair of undies help you feel sexy on the inside, but according to the Daily Star many of us are buying these items as a cheeky Christmas present for our other halves, with high street stores reporting a 16% rise in luxury lingerie sales this year.

“Sexy lingerie is definitely a way of making your cash go further,” the Daily Star quoted an expert as saying.

“It really is the gift that keeps on giving over and over again.”

So there you have it, two great options for the price of one.

However, we have to warn you, those Bridget Jones pants won’t have the desired effect, and, wearing your knickers as outerwear a la Lady Gaga also won’t get you those Christmas party brownie points.

Buy a Tabitha handbag and help an orphaned child in Bulgaria

By Andrea Petrou on December 1st, 2009

BAG.jpgCan you carry love in a handbag? We didn’t think so until we came across this amazing initiative.

The Tabitha bag, has been created especially to help children in Bulgaria who have been abandoned and left in horrific institutions.

All proceeds (100%) are said to go towards supporting vulnerable children in Bulgarian care homes and fund the Baba Programme, which matches a mature woman with a young abandoned child in need of a loving, caring and safe relationship.

With the purchase of the Tabitha, it’s claimed you will be ensuring a child gets another six weeks with his or her Baba.

The bag was designed by Emma Ganderton who has held creative roles at Alice Temperley and Alberta Ferretti and is currently head of design for bags & accessories at leading UK retailer Jigsaw.

The bags cost £155 each and you can buy them here. We think it’s definitely a gift worth giving this Christmas.
