why men should indulge the facial hair trend

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

Lauren Bravo writes:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that men’s style just isn’t as exciting as women’s. Naturally this only goes a small way toward making up for periods, childbirth, Nuts Magazine and centuries of oppression, but we can still celebrate it as a small victory. Men’s fashion, far more so than women’s, tends to divide itself into two distinct categories: dull things they will actually wear, and trendy things that they definitely shouldn’t.

The latter exists on the catwalks, in endless parades of leather sandles, jodphurs and McQueen mankinis, while the former exists in M&S, with occasional forays into Topman and Uniqlo. Of course there are concessions – indoor scarves, deck shoes and cardigans have all found their way quietly into the wardrobes of the Average British Male this year without prompting any kind of mass panic, while the Hoxton/Shoreditch contingent of East London have created their own concession commonwealth, impervious to the fashion judgements of the rest of the male population.

But on the whole, male dressing remains a bleak landscape. If female fashion is a treacherous jungle, full of beauty and drama and potential pitfalls, then the male fashion equivalent is probably Bognor Regis. And nor do they have the creative playground of hair and make up to mess around in. Which one could easily argue is a blessing, of course, but I’d wager there isn’t a man alive who hasn’t looked in the mirror the morning after the night before and thought “a bit of concealer would sort this right out”.

So it’s lucky, then, that they have beards. In the desert of men’s style, facial hair is a rare oasis (or just a big bush, if we’re doing analogy accuracy). It is, the more I think about it, a much better version of the female hairdo. It is free to grow and free to maintain. It can be altered day to day with only minimal effort. It requires no straightening, curling, spraying or highlighting. They aren’t made to feel inadequate by celebs with ‘beard extensions’. And, as far as I’m aware, no man is afraid to go out in the rain in case his beard goes fluffy.

Facial hair is having a particular renaissance right now. Where designer stubble reigned for most of the noughties (we’ll call it the ‘Beckham years’), recently we’ve seen a shift toward proper, full beards. The kind that suggest rugged, manly pursuits like chopping down trees and grouting bathroom tiles, and slaughtering livestock with their own bare hands. George Clooney’s has got fuller and embraced his grey, Brad Pitt is working a loo brush/sporran hybrid and even Robert Pattinson was spotted last week sporting whiskers that wouldn’t look out of place on an island castaway.

Sadly though, like most male fashion moments, women have been quick to condemn the bushy beard. Personally, I’ve found it hard to overcome the memory of Roald Dahl’s Mr Twit, who kept morsels of food in his beard to enjoy later on. But overcome it I have, because the bush is the lesser of two evils, the other one being nasty, overshaped, Craig David-style facial topiary. How soon we forget, ladies, that only a few short years ago, men’s grooming was inspired by Zoolander and cultivated by set squares and stencils, like a border freize on Changing Rooms. We should be grateful for the return to caveman chic, and understand that, like the perfect LBD or cover-up jacket, its job is to hide a multitude of sins.

Yes, there is always an air of mystery surrounding a beard; that is both their appeal and their downfall. We want to know what’s beneath it. On an average-looking man, we wonder if he might be ravishingly handsome without the beard, while on a ravishingly handsome man we wonder if under the hair lurks the face of a gawky 12-year-old. Beards are an illusion, like spanx or Peaches Geldof’s ‘career’. They work hard for their status, without appearing to work at all.

So I bid men to enjoy the hirsute trend and really let rip with some A-grade chin forestry. They deserve it, they so rarely get to have fun with fashion. And I’ll leave you with this interesting proposal: if they get to forgo the razor, does that mean we can too?

Jimmy Choo announces trainer range

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

Jimmy Choo trainers.jpgIt seems the fashion world has gone trainer mad today.

Earlier this morning we reported that Diana Ross and Steve Madden had teamed up to create a range of these and now Jimmy Choo, which is already collaborating with Uggs to create casual footwear, has stepped into the limelight announcing the launch of its street-cool sneaker line.

The brand best known for its gorgeous superhigh stilletoe heels, has created a collection of eight trainers, which include, suede and snakeskin designs finished with gold touches in low and high-top styles.

Could trainers be the next Manolos? And with so many fashionable trainers hitting the shelves will the “no trainers” policy in clubs be lifted?

Tesco bans customers from wearing pyjamas while shopping

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

PJS.jpgWe’ve all felt tempted to step out in our PJs at some point or other.

Usually after the night before when we’ve reached the fridge and found there’s no milk to make that life saving cup of tea. In your student days, if your PJs are designer (dahling), or you’re a celeb who teams them up with Ugg boots you could probably get away with this.

However, it seems the fashion police (in the shape of supermarkets) have jumped into action.

Bosses at a Tesco supermarket in South Wales have banned customers customers from shopping in their pyjamas, after members of the public complained that the sight of people pushing trolleys in their nightwear made them feel uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Those entering the store are now greeted by signs headed Tesco Dress Code Policy. “To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others, we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted).”

A store spokesman said yesterday: “We’re not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are more than welcome.”

Tesco would have a point if people turned up in their nighties or if the pjs were teeny tiny shorts and a top, but we think banning long style bottoms is slightly over the top, will it soon be moving to ban tracksuit bottoms?

Let us know what you think about this. Has Tesco gone mad or does the supermarket have a to stand on?

My Denim Inbetweener research and a gallery of the best fitting jeans on the highstreet

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

After my rant about being a denim inbetweener I thought I’d take some time out and really go and do some research. So I packed my fan, put my friend’s number on standby and hit the highstreet to see if there really was a perfect fitting jean.

To make the test fair I picked three different styles in each shop and took in the two sizes I always try.

First stop was H&M and I have to admit I was hopeful, but when I found that familiar tug at the thighs with all three pairs of the 8s, I knew it just wasn’t going to happen, and I felt it was far too early in my challenge to begin the denim workout.

And the 10s, proved to be even more of a surprise. One of the pairs turned out to be smaller than the 8, and fitting my toe through the tiny hole was as far as I got. However the other two were as baggy and ill fitting as usual.

So I continued. Topshop fared no better than H&M and although I’d gone into those changing rooms looking groomed, the tugging and sweating got the better of me. The outcome? I came out sporting a hairstyle that would only work on Jamie Afro (think Monica’s hair in the Barbados episode of Friends.)

This trend continued into Oasis, French Connection, Mango, Gap and Zara and as my frustrations grew so did the hair.

So I took myself, and the hair to Marks and Spencer. And guess what? I found a near perfect match (well we’ll forgive a tiny muffin top). However, once again the bigger size was just too big.

Dorothy Perkins also faired well in my denim test as did Miss Selfridge, Wallis (which all form part of the Arcadia group with Topshop) and River Island.

Now I want to get the low down from retailers on how they measure their sizes and I’m hoping I’ll be able to come back with some answers next week. I also want to conduct the same test with designer jeans to see if spending that little bit more ensures a perfect fit. And of course I want to hear about your experiences with this problem too (leave your comments below or email me at Andrea@shinymedia.com.)

Until then I’ve put together a gallery of some of the best fitting jeans out there. I know they won’t suit everyone but I hope it helps some of you.

You can also check out our Fashion Tips of Timeless jean styles, which I hope will go some way to helping you find that perfect fitting denim.

Pixie Lott to design two ranges of clothing for Lipsy

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

It seems that celebrities are becoming as famous for designing than they are their other trade with many jumping in on a number of designer and highstreet collaborations. The latest in this long line is Pixie Lott.

Having already designed a range of charity T-shirts for River Island and Moschino, the kooky singer has now been asked to design two ranges of clothing for glam highstreet retailer Lipsy.

And it seems she’s thrilled: “I love what Lipsy stands for and I am very excited at the thought of working with such a talented and creative team. It’s going to be great fun,” she said.

The star will create two lines for the brand. Pixie Festival will concentrate on vintage type dresses and denim and Pixie Party will go the complete other way giving us a range of animal prints and studs.

First looks: Taylor Momsen for New Look

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

Late last year we reported that Taylor Momsen could be the face of New Look and we weren’t sure if this was just a rumour or if it would actually happen.

Well guess what, it’s happened!

In the first snaps of the 2010 campaign the Gossip Girl, and one of our favourite style icons, poses in a range of Spring outfits for the highstreet store and we absolutely love the kooky stripped dress and on-trend harem pants.

We have to admit we weren’t too sure of this partnership as we thought Taylor was made of higher designer things (we expected at least a Gucci or Guess spread).

However we think we should eat our trilby hats as we think Taylor’s funky style really works with this brand and shows highstreet can be just as good as designer.

We can’t wait to get our hands on some of the range when it hits stores later on this year.

Diana Ross and Steve Madden team up to create a range of trainers

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

Diana ross.jpg
Fashion rumours go around all the time and sometimes don’t have an inch of truth in them (take the claims that Balmain was going to launch a lower priced clothing line).

So we’re more than sceptical about the latest on the grapevine. According to WWD, diva extraordinaire Diana Ross, is collaborating with Steve Madden on a range of footwear.

But instead of the glitzy heels or funky platforms (we wouldn’t expect anything less from Diana) the duo have apparently decided that trainers are the best step forward.

And whats more, the range will be sold exclusively in Foot Locker.

We hope if these rumours are true, then at least some of the designs in the collection show some of Diana’s sparkle, or we’ll be very very disappointed.

Balmain will not be launching a diffusion line.

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010
Paris Spring-Summer 2009 Ready To Wear Fashion Week - Balmain Runway

We thought we wouldn’t have to be bearers of bad news again today (we thought Ugly Betty being axed was enough) but it seems the fashion world has other ideas with news that Balmain won’t be launching a diffusion line.

We were really excited last week when the fashion grapevine went into full swing (we didn’t report on it because we didn’t want to get your hopes up) claiming that the brand was going to launch a lower priced collection. However, it seems as though this is not the case.

A Balmain representative told Vogue: “There is no Balmain lower priced line. What I think you might be referring to is a capsule collection that was prepared for some Parisian retailers.”

If we were texting this story we’d finish it with a ” :( ” just to show how unhappy we are.

Ugly Betty series to be taken off air

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

ugly_betty-1.jpgWe’ve really grown to love Ugly Betty and loved the way she’s blossomed over the past series. But it seems its time to say bye bye to Betty and her friends.

ABC has announced that the show, which is only half way through its current series in the US, will be taken off our screens in the middle of March. This is because the fashionista (of sorts) hasn’t been rocking the UK’s boats of late and thus viewing figures have dwindled.

We’re actually quite sad about this news as we’ve been hooked on the show since it began in 2006. And despite winning a Golden Globe and Emmy awards, it shows even fashion based TV can be fickle.

Looks like we’ll have to start recording the series over the next few months so we’ve got something to back on.

Lulu Guinness launches lip themed pop up shop to coincide with Valentines day

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Lulu.jpg
We’ve been trying to stay off the subject of Valentines Day until next week where we’ll be bringing you a range of love stories, underwear ranges and present ideas.

However, we couldn’t wait to tell you about Lulu Guinness’s lip-themed pop up shop, which will be making cameo move into London’s Carnaby Street from 8 February to coincide with Valentine’s Day and London Fashion Week.

Amongst a range of Lulu goodies, you’ll be able to get your hands on her sought after Lip Clutch bags, and you’ll be also doing a good deed.

A percentage of all the sales from Lulu’s Lip clutch bags will also go towards creating bursaries to support students studying the historical and contemporary practice of fashion.

But you better get there quickly as the shop will only be lingering around until 22 Febuary.

Evans enlists top plus size models for its new advertising campaign

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Evans.jpg
Evans has been the hero for plus sized ladies for a good few years now, and definitely deserves recognition for leading the way in plus size clothing.

However as a pioneer for these fashions its somewhat been left at the wayside as other retailers, such as Asos, which launched its Curve collection last week, breeze into the plus size market. And it’s not just retailers who have been making (a very appreciated) bigger is beautiful storm.

V Magazine dedicated an issue to plus sized models, while last year Glamour used a curvy woman for its cover. Mark Fast also cast size 14 girls to walk in his LFW show

Therefore it’s no surprise that Evans has really stepped up its advertising game. The retailer has enlisted a range of top plus size models including Britney Vecchio, Hayley Morley Amber Tolliver, Peeky and Crystal Renn to front its new campaign. And we love this shot which shows them wearing a selection of this season’s must have jackets.

We really hope these beautiful women can show those teeny tiny “give them a burger” models that bigger is far more attractive.

If you want to see more plus sized models and inspirational celebrities, check out our gallery here.

First looks: Behind the scenes with Kate Moss on the Longchamp campaign

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

It’s finally happened.

Kate Moss has officially launched her range of bags for Longchamp.

The model who was accompanied to the launch in Paris by fiance Jamie Hince showed off the collection, which includes the Rock’n'Casual, Rock’n'Travel and Rock’n'Glam, during a glitzy party at the Ritz.

We’ve also managed to get our hands on a video showing all the behind the scenes footage of the Lonchamp campaign. We’ve got our eyes firmly on that zebra print bag.

Have a look at the video below and tell us which bag takes your fancy.

Posh and Becks pose for his and hers covers for 10magazine

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Posh and Becks are rarely out of the media spotlight and if you thought this year would be a quieter one for the couple then think again.

Victoria has already racked up inches as high as her stilletoes this month with news that she may be designing a hotel in Dubai with Karl Lagerfeld. And just in case we haven’t seen enough of the pair, they’re now appearing on his ‘n’ hers covers to mark the 10 year anniversary of 10 magazine.

In the first ever celebrity cover for the mag, which was shot by Cedric Buchet, both show off their toned gym bodies. Victoria kept it posh in a range of outfits including a nude Roland Mouret bodycon slip as well as a black bodice and all in one.

In an interview with the magazine she also hinted that her fashion collection wasn’t going to disappear anytime soon, claiming: ‘I still plan to be doing this in 10, 15, 20 years time, so it’s got to be done right.’

However David chose to get all down and dirty for his cover. Hmm if our local mechanic looked like that we might not feel so upset about handing over those huge amounts of cash to get our cars fixed.

Melissa Odabash to donate 25% of Haiti bikini sales to helping victims of the earthquake

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010

m haiti.jpgThose of us who woke up to find ice on our cars this morning will shudder at the thought of wearing a bikini, but we need to to fast forward your minds to that summer holiday and get buying now.

Why? Because swimwear designer Melissa Odabash will be donating 25 per cent of the profits from each of her Haiti Bikini sales to Unicef to help the victims of the earthquake.

The designer told Vogue: “This year I had already named a bikini Haiti, and it seems only fitting that 25 per cent made on the sale of this bikini should go directly to Unicef to help the people of Haiti rebuild their homes and their lives.”

We can’t think of a better reason to begin building up our holiday wardrobe from now, and we might even concede and say its ok to wear this in a local pool.

Sex and the City cast begin filming two more movies

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010

Setc films.jpg
Sit down Sex and the City fans, as we think this latest update may just knock you off your Manolo Blahnik clad feet.

While we’re eagerly awaiting the opening of the second film (if you missed the trailer see it here) the cast are back in their heels and filming not one, but two more movies.

According the The Sun this is because Carrie and the rest of the leading ladies, who are all in their 40s, fear that they are beginning to age and won’t look as good in the parts.

Whatever the reason, it’s fantastic news for us SATC fans, although we wouldn’t mind seeing the girls with a few wrinkles, it would make us feel better about ours.
