Jonathan Saunders range for Topshop hits stores today

By Andrea Petrou on January 22nd, 2010

It may be that time in January when “pay day” seems like a historic word but with news that Jonathan Saunders collection is out today it’s time to scramble those pennies together and hot foot it down to Topshop.

The long awaited 5 piece range, consists a skinny black dress and matching white T-shirt, and a panelled denim pencil skirt, as well as a denim cropped top, which will show off those newly toned gym figures some of you may be working hard at.

Jonathan said: “My collection for Topshop this season has been inspired by sportswear and workwear, as well as the bold and graphic shapes of the Memphis movement. It’s perfect for urban city dewellers”.

And if you don’t want to brave the rain then you can also pick up pieces of the range online. We think living on potatoes and soup for the next week is definitely worth it for this collection, and we’ll probably even be able to fit into the denim cropped top as a result.

Click on the picture below to view some of the range.

Lily Allen wears underwear as outerwear but would you follow the trend?

By Andrea Petrou on January 22nd, 2010

Lily Corsett.jpgWe’ve been banging on about underwear as outerwear for a while now, and we’ll be reviewing a corset set later on next week, after we’ve attempted to wear it as outerwear in a few clubs.

However, we’re still not 100% sure about the trend, which is has previously been sported by the likes of Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Britney Spears.

And these new pictures showing Lily Allen performing in a corset top made for underwear haven’t done much to settle our fashion minds.

The pop starlet, who is no stranger to this style, wore a tiny lace-covered corset, teamed with Chanel mock-stockings for a gig in Australia and although she pulls it off better than some celebs we still don’t know what to make of it.

What do you think about this trend? Does it work and would you wear it or do you think undies should remain firmly out of site? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Tateossian donates 10% of jewellery sales to helping victims of the Haiti earthquake

By Andrea Petrou on January 22nd, 2010

Tate.jpgWe’re all shocked and saddened by the events taking place in Haiti at the moment, and like many have donated as much as we can to the relief efforts.

However, we know more can always be done so we’re thrilled that fashion companies are beginning to take the initiative and donate some profits to help the victims of the earthquakes.

One brand to do this is Tateossian who has said it will donate 10% of all the sales from its chunky and gold jewellery lines to Rapid UK who are currently helping the thousands of people who’s lives have been destroyed by the earthquake.

We think its a perfect excuse to get online and start buying now.

First Looks: Tilda Swinton for Pringle Scotland video

By Andrea Petrou on January 22nd, 2010

We gave you a first glimpse of Pringle’s SS2010 campaign staring Tilda Swinton and now we’ve got our hands on the promotional video too.

Despite our hopes that the campaign would be fun, the video says a different story, it features Tilda walking across the beautiful Scottish landscape and ending up in a cave wearing different outfits.

And although its not fun, it’s laid back, depicted by Tilda’s lack of footwear, and just a tad eerie. However it does make for riveting watching and the cinematography is amazing.

Watch it below and tell us if you agree.

First Looks: Scarlett Johansson for Mango SS2010

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

scar1.jpgScarlett Johansson is no stranger to modelling and not at all unfamiliar with Mango after she fronted the company’s A/W 2009 campaign, for which she received mix responses for.

However that hasn’t stopped her being signed up to front the highstreet store’s S/S2010 collection.

Personally we think Scarlett looks fabulous in this season’s florals and floaty designs and we don’t think anyone will be complaining this time.

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

HH.jpgWe love how designers are giving us mere mortals a tiny door of opportunity when it comes to modelling.

Earlier this month Hugo Boss launched a competition to find a catwalk model for fashion week and today Henry Holland has announced he wants members of the public to lend their faces to his upcoming H! by Henry Holland line for Debenhams.

A total of 36 boys and girls will be chosen to appear on scarves and bags, which will be sold at 60 stores across the country in July. All you have to do is visit the Debenhams blog, upload your photo, and you could be a piece of designer history.

Good luck!

Why occasional dressing doesn’t suit everyone

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

chloe.jpg
Lauren Bravo writes: Poor Chloe Sevigny. She turns out at the Golden Globes in a cascade of silk ruffles, looking every inch the fashion-forward Hollywood star. She wins Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role in Big Love.

She makes her way to the stage, full of poise and old-world glamour, in front of an admiring audience of industry names. And then, at the last vital moment, Rrrrriiiiiiiiiip! Some git tears half her dress off. Thus we learn the first rule of occasion dressing: whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Especially if you’re on camera.

I felt for Chloe, particularly as I’ve experienced her wardrobe malfunction myself. Admittedly mine occurred at my high school prom, not in front of the Hollywood Foreign Press and a million television viewers, but it was still traumatic.

I spent £150 on a chiffony creation from Monsoon, the kind you picture yourself being proposed to in, then promptly put my heel through the hem as I got out of the car in the school drive. To add insult to embarrassment, it was quickly revealed that three other girls had turned up in the same dress – but hey, I was the only one with a gaping hole…

Some girls thrive on occasion dressing. They’re usually, as it happens, the girls who keep it low-key the rest of the time. The jeans-and-jumpers girls. All year it’s sensible coats, denim and comfy separates, then at the whiff of an invitation, ooh, out come lithe limbs poured into something slinky, satiny and elegant. They glide around, part Audrey Hepburn, part Disney Princess, and the impact is made all the more striking by its contrast to their usual appearance.

They don’t spill, their make-up doesn’t smudge, their underwear doesn’t show, and they don’t go all scarlet and drippy after a turn on the dancefloor. They are the girls formal events are designed for. I am not one of these girls.

No, I realised many, many years ago that I can’t do occasion dressing. Other people will be watching awards season with joy, cooing at the dresses and the flawless red carpet elegance, but I will spend it shouting “HOW? How are you DOING that??” at a variety of magazine spreads. And yet, every time an occasion presents itself, I still have a brief moment of delusion. “Maybe this time”, I think, “I’ll pull it off. I’ll find something classy, and I’ll look classy in it, and I’ll still be feeling classy when they carry me out of the marquee at 4am.”

It’s not an aversion to dressing up, you understand – In fact I have a tendency to be chronically overdressed for everyday life. I will wear sequins to the pub, cocktail dresses to family barbecues and stilettos to Tesco. But give me a bonafide ooccasion, something that actually demands a bit of sartorial effort, and I go to pieces. I become a one-woman style disaster zone.

The routine generally goes something like this: I won’t be able to find/afford/fit into a suitable dress. So I will spend three weeks in a consumer frenzy, then the day before buy something a size too small, in a colour I hate, that accommodates no bra known to man. I will then attempt something radical with my hair, which will go wrong, requiring me to obliterate the whole thing with straighteners, then wet it to stop it looking too straight, then straighten it to stop it looking too wet.

After a week on grapes and green tea I will crack, eat a burrito, and not be able to do the zip up on the too-small-anyway dress. After half an hour of flatmate-assisted zip warfare I will finally be assembled, but sweaty from effort, which will then demand another hair re-straighten. I will top off the look with a pair of shoes that cripple me, a massive bag with my alternative flat shoes in it, and a coat that doesn’t go. One of my false eyelashes will come unstuck on the bus. I will appear in at least 170 photos in the act of hitching up my dress, then spill kebab juice down it on the way home. That, ladies, is how I do occasion dressing.

So I hope Ms Sevigny wasn’t too distraught after her fashion faux-pas. After all, there’s nothing like a big shiny award to distract from a dress disaster – if I can somehow get myself nominated fro a Brit, maybe that will be my next trick.

Lara Stone announces she wants to have a family soon

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

Lara and David.jpgThe gossip dust has barely settled following the news of David Walliams’ and Lara Stone’s engagement, but that hasn’t stopped the couple from making more plans.

And this time it’s babies.

Just before they flew back to London from Brazil, Lara told the Mirror: “I want to have a family and be a good wife. I want a family soon.”

Many men may have bulked at this quick turnaround but thankfully for Lara, David has previously expressed his desire for children.

“I’d like three,” he said.

“A little gang.”

We’re sure with Lara’s modelling genes and David’s good looks the children will be beautiful whenever the couple decide to have them.

First Looks: Blake Lively for Esquire Magazine

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

Blake 1.jpg
Blake Lively has always been a kooky dresser in our books and we love her smart, yet laid back tailored style. However, it seems the Gossip Girl has got more fashion sides to her than we originally thought.

The actress has been transformed into a Grease starlet for Esquire magazine, where she poses in a leather jacket while running a comb through her wet look styled hair to give the original Grease T Bird boys a run for their money. She also pulls off that pants as outerwear look extremely well (take note Lady Gaga).

And we imagine her sultry swimwear shot will have many men rushing out to buy the latest copy of the magazine when it hits news stands next month.

ShinyStyle poll: Did Cheryl or Dannii look better at the National Television Awards?

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010
National Television Awards 2010 - Arrivals

X-Factor may be over until this Autumn but it didn’t stop the programme scooping a range of awards last night, and we couldn’t help have a last “who won the style wars” competition between the two female judges.

Pregnant Dannii opted for a 50s prom style striped dress, which she teamed up with gorgeous red shoes, while Cheryl went for an (extra) long grey frock with a plunging neckline. She finished off the look with grey 80s style cuffs.
For once we really can’t decide who looked better on the night so we’ve decided to leave that to you.

Vote below and tell us if it was Dannii or Cheryl who won your style approval last night.

Who wore what at the National Television Awards

By Andrea Petrou on January 21st, 2010

British stars turned up in their hundreds last night to celebrate the National Television Awards. As always there were winners (X-Factor, Ant and Dec and Dr Who to mention a few) and losers. However, we were more interested in what the stars were wearing.
The smart tone (let’s face it the awards were hardly as glitzy as the Golden Globes) was demonstrated perfectly by a range of celebrities including Eastenders winner Lacey Turner who sported a simple yet sophisticated short black dress.

Mylene Klass also opted for a short pink jacquered frock, which we think resembles that worn by Sarah Jessica Parker at the Did you Hear about the Morgans? premier and similar to Megan Fox’s Armani dress, which the designer then replicated and made available for us to buy.

While others such as Amanda Holden, who wore a white fishtail skirt and ruffled bodice went for a more glam look.

And of course there wasn’t a shortage of the classic long black dresses with Louise Redknapp and Sugarbabe Heidi demonstrating how these should be worn.

We were also very surprised at how classy Jordan looked in her satin floral maxi dress. And it seems we’re not the only ones with fake tanned twin Michelle Heaton opting for exactly the same frock in purple. Oh dear.

Tell us if you agree and who you think wore their dress best last night by leaving your comments below.

First Looks: Tilda Swinton for Pringle

By Andrea Petrou on January 20th, 2010

Tilda.jpgAs you know, many designers are now picking up celebrities to front their campaigns. This has led to many sultry shots, think Emma Watson for Burberry and Madonna for D&G, and while we don’t have a problem with this, it’s always nice to have a bit of a change.

Cue Pringle’s new SS2010 campaign. Although the brand has gone for an actress, it’s decided to pick Tilda Swinton who is well known for her sense of humour and fun.

The actress who played the ice queen in the Lion, witch and the Wardrobe apparently went “wild” at the shoot photographed by Ryan McGinley and if this picture is anything to go by we can’t wait to see the rest of this fun campaign.

Victoria and David Beckham design t-shirts for Sports Relief

By Andrea Petrou on January 20th, 2010

Becks.jpgThe Beckhams are rarely out of the media spotlight.

Victoria always makes a fashion story, and David, well lets be honest who wouldn’t want to hear about him at every opportunity?

However, this time we really think the couple deserve a spot on the fashion news pages.

The duo are designing a range of t-shirts for this years Sports Relief.
And it seems as though the whole family has got involved, not only will each t-shirt feature the Beckhams for Sport Relief logo it will also have a combination of the footprints of each family member, and one style features a picture of David showcasing his football skills.

At leat £5 from the T-shirts, which will be sold at Sainsbury’s and TK Maxx, for £9.99, will go to charity.

Gucci and Christie’s launch a vintage auction service

By Andrea Petrou on January 20th, 2010

Gucci Vintage.jpg
It seems we’re on a vintage roll today.

Not only have we compiled a gallery of bags, shoes and scarves, but Lara Stone’s engagement ring is also said to be a vintage favourite.

And the day gets better for all you vintage Gucci collectors out there too.
The brand has teamed up with auction house Christie’s to launch a website, which lets you see if those old family Gucci hand me downs and collectables are actually worth something.

The service, will also inform the collectors whether their item would be of interest to either Gucci or Christie’s from an historical perspective and will assure prospective buyers of its authenticity.

Gucci president and ceo Patrizio di Marco, told Vogue: “This new service will provide a ‘trusted’ venue for transactions of vintage Gucci items thereby avoiding recourse to ‘uncontrolled’ auction sites such as eBay.”

We’re off to have a dig around our old aunt Mabel’s flat.
