ShinyStyle watch: Lara Stone’s shoot for Louis Vuitton

By Andrea Petrou on January 13th, 2010

Ever wondered how a big ad campaign comes together? Well take a look at this video with behind the scenes footage for Lara Stone’s shoot for Louis Vuitton.

It was only last month we showed you the gorgeous pictures of the star who took over from Madonna as the face of the brand, and many of you agreed she looked stunning.

We love seeing how a shoot comes together from the selection of clothing to the hair and make-up and, in this case the birds. And we promise this video does not disappoint.

Could there be a job for Tony Blair at Louis Vuitton?

By Andrea Petrou on January 12th, 2010

Tony.jpgMichelle Obama and Samantha Cameron are two political names we could associate with fashion, however Tony Blair is not.

So we were more than shocked to find out that the former Prime Minister is joining Louis Vuitton as an advisor at the luxury brand.

A source told the Daily Telegraph: “There is an agreement in principle but nothing has been signed yet.

“Mr Blair won’t be joining the board but he will be acting in an advisory role, working very closely with Mr Arnault. In particular, his job is likely to involve attracting new clients.”

We’ll have to watch carefully to find out how this one pans out, but we’re just glad Mr Blair wasn’t recruited for an ad campaign.

Asda launches range of clothing with built in shapewear to eliminate those embarrassing Bridget Jones moments

By Andrea Petrou on January 12th, 2010

Asda shapewear.jpgWe know we’ve covered shapewear quite a bit this year, but unless you know of some miracle diet (email us sharpish if you do please) we know, like us, many of you will still be showing a few signs of that post-Christmas bulge.

So we couldn’t help but tell you about Asda’s new shapewear range with a difference.

Understanding that Bridget Jones moment many of us fear when it comes to big knickers, the supermarket has launched a range of clothing with built-in shapewear, which is said to help give the illusion of a more trim and toned figure by taking an inch and a half off your waist line.

Fiona Lambert, brand director for George said: “There is no need for women to slave away in the gym or diet to achieve the perfect shape.”

And she’s quite right when a range looks as good as this. Choose from a Tummy tamer little black dress (£28) or high-waisted skirt (£16), which we think are far better value than a personal trainer.

Don’t worry we’re not getting all granny style on you, but with the winter weather making socks and tights soggy, we all many of you want to do when you get home after the wet and long commute is slip your feet into something warm and cosy (go on admit it).

Slippers have become an essential part of the winter wardrobe for many of us, and comapnies have woken up to this with even top brands such as (dare we say it) Uggs producing a range of this comforting footwear.

We’ve put together a gallery of fashionable, quirky and novelty slippers that will have your feet sighing with delight after a hard day in the office. However, wearing them out to the local shops a la many celebs is still a fashion no no in our book.

First looks: Megan Fox models Armani SS2010 underwear range

By Andrea Petrou on January 12th, 2010

Megan 1.jpgIt was way back in October when we reported that Megan Fox had replaced Victoria Beckham as the face of Armani’s SS2010 underwear range.

Even then we knew these pictures would be sizzling, and now we’ve seen them, we know we were right (don’t you just love that?). Megan 2.jpg

However instead of the sexy shoot we were expecting, these ads show a far more demure side to Megan, who poses in one of the shots in a cute black and white stripped set. We can’t wait to see the rest of them.

“Megan is young and sexy and has a lot of spirit. Both Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans are all about a youthful attitude, making her the perfect choice for the collections,” said Giorgio Armani.

ShinyStyle watch: Dolce and Gabbana Winter 2010 menswear collection

By Andrea Petrou on January 12th, 2010

Those of us who know a little bit (or alot) about the way couture items are made, will know that even a pattern drawing or stitch a millimetre out of place could ruin the whole outfit, making clothes pukker or sit funny when they are on.

And this is an even more important rule for tailored couture menswear, especially suits. So we were really pleased to find this video by Dolce and Gabbana, which shows exactly how it should be done.

The video, which shows a preview of their men’s winter 2010 collection shows how a suit is painfully put together and covers everything from the pattern cutting to stitching. It’s been made to mark a decade of sharp menswear by the brand.

Time to get the scissors and sewing machines out girls.

French Government moves to ban burkas

By Andrea Petrou on January 11th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Burka.jpg

We all remember the days when we had to sneak out of the house because we knew our parents wouldn’t approve of our outfits. If you had the same problem and at the time hard done by, then spare a thought for the women choose to wear burkas in France.

According to Grazia the French government is voting on a proposal to ban burkas, niqabs and full-body cloaks with eye slits. If the bill, proposed by Jean-Francois Copé, leader of the majority party UMP, goes through then women caught wearing the attire which leaves them ‘fully covered in public’ will be fined around £675.

Mr Copé said the Government had spoken to “religious and secular figures who all confirmed [the burka] was not a religious prescription.

“Wearing the full body veil is about extremists who want to test the republic,” he said.

He also added anyone who forces a woman to wear this attire will also be forced to pay an even bigger fine. We can understand this point, after all no-one should be forced to wear something they don’t want to, but we think banning someone from wearing what they want is a completely different story.

Do you agree? Leave your comments below and let us know.

Lady Gaga wants Lara Stone to appear in her next music video

By Andrea Petrou on January 11th, 2010

Lady Gaga introduces pants as outerwear

Lady Gaga has been one of 2009 hottest stars and it seems she’ll be continuing her press domination in 2010.

Last week Polaroid announced her position as its new creative director and this week it seems the Lady herself has taken the power reigns.

According to the gossip grapevine, or in this case The Sun, she’s set her sights on Lara Stone, to appear in her next music video of upcoming single Alejandro. Although details are still a little bit shaky, we’ve gathered that the face of Louis Vuitton is number one on Lady Gaga’s casting list, and if it happens we think it’ll be an excellant collaboration.

However, there’s also some bad news for Miss Gaga today with claims that designer Mark Fast has refused to lend the singer any of his creations. According to reports in Metro News, Mr Fast said this was over concerns that his designs would be overshadowed by the singer.

“I love her music and that Bad Romance song is stuck in my head all the time, but we don’t necessarily have to accept everyone just because they are famous,” he said.

“‘My work is about a lifestyle. It’s not fast-food fashion. It’s not about trends, it’s about classic, it’s about the body, it’s about beauty. Maybe that gets lost in the picture with certain celebrities.”

Now after the Antonio Berardi debate, we’re not sure we should believe everything we read so we’ll be trying to get hold of Mark’s people to get the full story. Keep reading for the latest updates.

Max C launches heart adorned jumpers

By Andrea Petrou on January 8th, 2010

Hearts.jpgChristmas has well and truly taken the hint and left before it out stayed its welcome, however with the biggest event gone for another 12 months, retailers are looking to the next big money maker.

Cadbury’s Cream eggs have hit the shelves , giving us a not so subtle hint about Easter and other companies are using Valentines day to get us spending.
We know we shouldn’t encourage it, especially as the official day of love is a good few weeks away yet, but we couldn’t help telling you about these kooky jumpers from Max C.

We love part of this range including the cutesy heart adorned cardigan and black cardigan with red sequined hearts. However one cardi in the range reminds us of a more grown up version of “kiss me quick” seaside hats and “I’m available” 18-30′s T-Shirts, and features a not so subliminal “Love me” adorned on the back.

Love me.jpg

Yes we know we may be being a bit harsh, afterall, slogan style jumpers have been a big hit this year, but we can’t help thinking that this maybe a little bit Bridget Jones rather than Bardot this Valentines day.

Why leggings are slowly becoming the bane of the fashion world

By Andrea Petrou on January 8th, 2010

Kelly.jpgLauren Bravo writes:
Rules are made to be broken, that’s how the old adage goes. And so it normally is in fashion, where rules like ‘blue and green should never be seen’ and ‘steer clear of horizontal stripes’ have been broken with such regularity that they now exist only in quaint 1930s books and the occasional WI meeting. We start kicking against clothing regulations early on in life with school uniform, rolling our waistbands over and making our ties short and stubby as a low-maintenance way of sticking it to the Man.

Then later it all becomes a bit more relevant, when we stop earning house points and start earning style points. Fashion rules are thrown at us from all directions, each with the promise it will deliver that magical word, “flattering” (and those even more magical ones, “thin”, “young” and “almost a bit like Scarlett Johansson”). I say they’re thrown from all directions, but of course it’s largely whatever direction Trinny and Susannah happen to have been standing in – though they’ve fallen off the radar in recent years, to this day I still hear them shrieking “Deep Vs! Three-quarter sleeves! Put DOWN the polo neck!” every time I go shopping.

But this is all a very round-about way of bringing up a delicate topic. Which is, not to beat around the, um, bush or anything: crotches. Crotches seem suddenly to have risen to new prominence in our society, and I think they need attention. No, hang on, the ISSUE needs attention. The crotches need as little attention as possible.

The problem began about four years back, when leggings made their triumphant return to our wardrobes. It was an unlikely lycra renaissance for a generation who remember our mums in them not so long ago, but leggings managed to be one of the most dominant trends of the noughties. Their appeal was based, initially, on coverage; thicker than tights, we could wear long tops as ‘dresses’ and pelmets as ‘skirts’ without shame of reproof. They were the get-out-of-slutty-free card. And they were warm to boot.

But their service to us was part of a fashion deal – to avoid making the same mistakes our mothers did, leggings had to be worn with more caution this time round. The unspoken rule, or at least so I understood it, was this: we had to keep the crotch covered at all times. Whether with tunics, dresses, shorts or skirts, leggings had to stay layered beneath things. It just made good sense. I thought we were all agreed.

Apparently not. For all of a sudden, across the nation, hemlines are rising and crotches are emerging. People are wearing leggings with t-shirts. With blouses. With cropped tops even. Whether it’s deliberate fashion anarchy or just that everybody has forgotten the rule, I’m not sure. Or perhaps it’s because, in these times of recessionista thrift, we can now pass off three millimetres of clingy spandex as “trousers”, like they used to make birthday cakes out of hat boxes in the war. Perhaps.

Either way, I feel something needs to be said. It’s one of those rare looks that is as unappealing on short and tall, curvy and skinny alike. Not that I’m electing myself as the anti-crotch front, running around the streets handing out aprons to protect women’s dignity – if the crotch-bearing is a conscious act, I have no right to interfere. But somehow I don’t think it IS conscious. I think something has wandered off course somewhere in the grand scheme of trend development, and we need to get it back on course. So I’m going to say it once more, in a very loud, clear voice, and then sit back and hope it takes some effect. Ahem . PUT. THE CROTCHES. AWAY.

(I’d like to apologise for the number of times I’ve had to use the word ‘crotch’ in this article. But it could have been worse. At least I never said ‘cameltoe’)

Women choosing Long Johns over sexy Lingerie during the snow says Debenhams

By Andrea Petrou on January 8th, 2010

Long johns.jpgIt seems some of us may be telling a few porkies when we’re updating our Facebook statuses and telling our friends about the colour bra we’re wearing in aid of Breast Cancer,.

Sales figures for Debenhams have shown that many of us are ditching our frilly lingerie for thermals this week as snow hits Britain and temperatures in some places plummet to -15C.

While long Johns are claimed to have flown off the shelves in record numbers lingerie has dwindled. And we’re also going that one step further at an attempt of keeping warm with sales of faux-fur coats raising by 22 per cent.

Elena Antoniou, a representative for Debenhams, told OK Magazine: “It’s meant to be ‘fur coat and no knickers’, but our sales prove the old adage wrong – this winter it’s about fur coats and thermal knickers!”

Let us know if you’re one of those girls who has chosen to beat the chill with Long Johns by leaving your comments below.
