Nothing can take away from the sad news that’s broken over the past 24 hours but we know we have to soldier on, and what better way to start than with Christian Louboutin’s new Barbie.

The designer has created a second limited edition doll, which has been inspired by spring summer ’10′s military trends.

Barbie showcases her fashion flair in a khaki tunic dress and the lucky girl even has her own miniature version of Mr Louboutin’s much coveted knee-high fringed boots, plus three additional miniature pairs of signature red-soled shoes.

Dolly Forever Barbie will be available from Net-A-Porter from 3 March.

Tributes pour in for Alexander McQueen. We put together a gallery of his best work

By Andrea Petrou on February 12th, 2010

Tributes for Alexander McQueen have been flooding in from every corner of the celebrity and fashion worlds with many using Twitter to put their thoughts into the public domain.

Peaches Geldof was among the first celebrities to pay tribute on the micro-site, posting a quote from TS Eliot. On her page, she wrote: “RIP Alexander McQueen.”Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”- T.S. Eliot”

And Tyra Banks tweeted, “RIP Alexander McQueen. so so sad. such a huge loss. He was one of my favorite designers. He will be missed.”

Others have released statements to tell the world how much they respected the designer.
Sarah Jessica Parker said: “What is more devastating is that despite all his success thus far creatively, critically and commercially, his greatest achievements lay ahead of him, the future would be whatever he hoped to make of it.

“He was talented well beyond his years and the seriousness and unrivalled talent which he applied to his work is in bountiful display year after year and collection after collection,” she said. “Every single inspired, original, lofty, whimsical, stunning, brilliant and jaw dropping detail was Alexander McQueen.”

Madonna said: “Lee McQueen was a truly unique visionary in the world of fashion. A creator of beauty. What a tragedy.”

To pay our respects we’ve put together a collection of some of his pieces and best moments.

RIP Alexander McQueen

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010

Alex.jpg

It’s been an afternoon of shock and sorrow as the news that Alexander McQueen has been found dead filters through the grapevine.

The British fashion designer, known for his outrageous and extraordinary designs including his high high shoes, and who won the British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2003 was just 40 years old.

His family said in a statement: ‘On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.’

Our sympathy goes out to his family.

Rihanna pulls herself back from the fashion faux pas pile

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010
Rihanna Promotes Rated R In Seoul

She may have made a fashion faux pas arriving at Seoul airport in a mismatch of military, 80s denim and a horrible sideways hat, but Rihanna has quickly pulled herself back onto out fashion radars.

The singer who is over in South Korea promoting her new Rated R album, stuck to the 80s trend.

However she swapped her previous light denim disaster for a blazer sporting her trademark big shoulder style.

This was teamed up with a gorgeous pink tulle skirt with an on-trend gathered bow statement piece.

Has Rihanna redeemed herself in your fashion eyes? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Lauren Bravo tells us what maketh the rock chick

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010

Taylor Momsen

Lauren Bravo writes: She’s one of fashion’s favourite mythical figures, along with the woman who actually has a capsule wardrobe and Mariah Carey’s ‘stylist’. She reappears in some shape or form every season, manifested in leather jackets, slashed t-shirts and smudgy eyeliner. She’s a household name, bandied around in fashion houses and ladies’ loos alike.

But she rarely delivers everything she promises (supposedly because she’s hanging out backstage with Iron Maiden; really because she’s made up by magazine editors with no imagination). She’s the ‘rock chick’: three parts reputation to one part nifty alliteration.

The tricky thing about rock chick as a trend is that, like many other mythical beings, as soon as you lay claim to it, it doesn’t exist anymore. Nobody who is actually a rock chick would ever use the term ‘rock chick’. It’s a linguistical rip in the space/time/style continuum. Just as nobody who calls themselves ‘kooky’ ever really is (see also: quirky’, and ‘I just rolled out of bed and threw this on’), any girl who sums up her style as ‘rock chick’ generally hasn’t been any nearer a moshpit than Medium level on Guitar Hero III.

So what maketh the rock chick? If we’re following the fashion definition, there are some basic ingredients:

Leather. In jacket form if you’re a novice; in trouser form if you’re a divorcee who’s just finished at Slimmer’s World.

Studs and chains. This season especially, studs and chains are embellishment of choice. Think of it as the pain-free alternative to facial piercing.

Band t-shirts. Here I feel duty-bound to repeat the old adage – if you can’t sing at least three songs by the band, you CANNOT WEAR THE T-SHIRT.

Eyeliner. In fash mag speak, this should look like ‘last night’s make-up’ (ie. be crumbling down your face, and giving you those little black globules of sleep in the corners. Nice). Because rock chicks are too busy doing debauched things on tour buses to use a cleansing wipe.

Ripped tights. A man once chased me all the way up Tottenham Court Road, just to tell me I had a ladder in my tights. He didn’t get the grateful response he seemed to expect – instead, I snapped back, “Yeah, SO? I am AWARE. What do you want me to DO, run home and change? It’s a LADDER, it’s not like my BOOB is hanging out.” I realise in hindsight that my reaction was wrong. I should have calmly told him I was ‘channelling rock chick’.

So I’ve come to believe that fashion’s obsession with the rock chick is a question of good PR on behalf of the whole industry. Because fashion types tend to be regarded as uptight, controlling, slaves to perfection (does Anna Wintour’s hair ever move? Have you seen it?); and rock chick is the antidote to that.

The rock chick stays out all night, drinks beer, not champagne, dances until she’s sweaty and eats a kebab on the way home. So as a form of damage limitation on their image, fashion people have commandeered her and repackaged her as their own creation. She is ‘dishevelled’ (messy), she is ‘nonchalant’ (doesn’t give a rat’s bottom) and she is ‘full of attitude’ (might throw an amp at your head).

And it’s easy to keep on believing in the rock chick, because there are plenty of celebrity purveyors of the myth. Kate Moss is the classic – she dates indie musicians! She goes to Glastonbury! She’s always got a fag on! But Kate’s cover is blown each time she opens her mouth, and instead of the whiskey-soaked growl of a true rocker, out comes the squeaky bleat of a Croydon schoolgirl.

Then there’s Amy Winehouse, who was perhaps one of the most authentic poster girls they had, until her rockabilly aesthetic passed out of fashion favour and her St Lucia rehab stint made her hair go crap. The most successful pretender to the throne currently seems to be Taylor Momsen – the precocious little upstart who has earned her place in rock chick mythology by playing Jenny, the ‘edgy one’ on Gossip Girl.

Overlooking the fact that calling someone a rock chick for being the ‘edgy one’ on Gossip Girl is like giving someone a Nobel Prize for being the ‘clever one’ on Big Brother, Momsen’s look is a checklist of rock chick accoutrements. Ripped tights, week-old eyeliner, tangled nest of peroxide extensions. She is also, however, the face of New Look S/S 2010 – a nice move on the store’s part, but for Taylor it’s about a 1.5 on the scale of credible rock and roll moves, just above Iggy Pop on the insurance billboards and John Lydon advertising that butter.

So you can’t help but wonder, is Ms Momsen just another in the long line of fashion-created ‘rock chicks’ that we’re meant to follow blithely with our kohl pencils and ‘I’m with the band’ t-shirts, until she gets bored and Rachel Zoe attacks her? Just remember this, ladies – every time you say you don’t believe in rock chicks, a rock chick somewhere DIES. Whether that’s a good thing or not, I’ll leave you to decide.

First Looks: Behind the scenes at Stella McCartney’s SS2010 ad campaign

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010

Stella McCartney’s SS2010 advertising campaign is one that really stands out this year. The designer has created a range of ads based on the old and new, and each and every one is striking.

So we were really excited when we were given a behind the scenes video of the shoot starring model du jour Natalia Vodianova.

We love watching these videos, which really give an idea of the atmosphere of the shoot, and if this is anything to go by, it seems both Stella and Natalie had fun, even sharing a few private jokes in between shots.

Mary J Blige teams up with designer Catherine Malandrino to launch a range of charity t-shirts

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010

Mary J Blige charity.jpg

It’s definitely a month for celebrity and charity collaborations and next on the bandwagon is soul singer Mary J Blige.

The singer has teamed up with designer friend Catherine Malandrino to launch a T-shirt collection called FFAWN + Catherine Malandrino.

According to WWD, the collection features tunics with hand-painted messages such as “I’m Free” and “I’m Power.” and a percentage of all sales will benefit FFAWN, the Foundation for the Achievement of Women Now charity set up by Ms J Blige started 2008.

Mary told WWD: “Catherine has been a dear friend of mine for years and, after she learned about FFAWN and our mission, she offered to create a T-shirt collection that would celebrate being women, being strong and being free. These are not your average T-shirts.”

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper front M.A.C’s charity lipstick

By Andrea Petrou on February 11th, 2010

Lady G and Cindy for Mac.jpg

Yesterday we reported Lady Gaga was selling off some of her stage costumes to help raise funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, and it seems her goodwill doesn’t stop there.

The singer and equally wacky songstress Cyndi Lauper will both front a range of new lipsticks for M.A.C. All sales of this collection will go to the M.A.C AIDS Fund, which helps those with the illness and HIV virus in Africa.

Miss G has also taken it upon herself to give women sex advice and encourage them to use contraception.

She told WWD: “When the guy that she’s seeing says, ‘Baby, it doesn’t feel good when I wear that,’ or ‘Baby, it’s just you,’ you say, ‘F–k you, I’m out of here.’”

“Buying condoms is seen as a male accessory. We were joking that we wish the lipstick had on the side, ‘Where’s my best friend, the condom? Come out with me tonight.’

More than just pretty face, hey Miss G? We wonder if she’ll incorporate her wise words into her song lyrics too.

Love it or loathe it, Valentines Day is coming around fast.

If you’re planning on going out and want to add a Valentines theme to the day then red accessories are the perfect way to go. Not only will they match any outfit (although we advise you to stay away from pink) but they also won’t stand out too much.

Red is also a hot trend this season meaning you can wear your these again and again.

The weather may be frosty but we’re sure they’ll be lots of warm hearts around with these accessories on Sunday.

Yay or Nay? Rihanna’s military style outfit and sideways cap

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2010
Rihanna Arrives Seoul

Rihanna’s style is one we like to talk about alot here at ShinyStyle. Sometimes she’s kooky, sometimes she shows us how fashion should be worn and other times she makes us feel better showing us that even the best people can make mistakes.

However we’re not too sure what to make of the outfit she wore when she arrived at Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, where she is promoting her album ‘Rated R’.

Dressed in a military style coat over a denim waistcaot, the singer looks as though she’s tried to combine too many styles into one outfit. And while we understand the need to cover up hair after a long flight, we really can’t condone the military style baseball cap, which worn at a side angle looks as though it should be on the set of the Fresh Price of Bel-Air.

Christina Aguilera goes back to basics in her shoot for Marie Claire

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2010

Christina Aguilera for Marie Claire.jpg
Christina Aguilera has undergone a range of style changes since she popped onto our screens all those years ago.

She’s gone from fresh-faced girl next door to dark haired (and sometimes scary).

However, it seems she’s found her perfect look in these pictures for Marie-Claire.

The singer, shot by Peggy Sirota, poses in minimal make-up, which highlights her striking eyeliner in a range of different outfits including a bodysuit and cute sequined dress, which are dressed up with accessories.

We love the singer’s shoot and hope she’ll keep the style going.

First looks: Gisele snapped out with her baby Benjamin Brady

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2010

Benjamin brady.jpg

His mum’s a supermodel and his father’s equally gorgeous so we weren’t expecting anything less than cute from Gisele Bündchen’s baby boy.

The 2 month old tot, who was born on December 8, and is the first child for the supermodel and the second for her husband,Tom Brady, made his first magazine appearance for Brazilian mag Quem, where he’s pictured in his mum’s arms while she was in Boston.

Wrapped up warm in a cute blue babygrow, it seems as though Benjamin Brady has taken after his father American footballer father, and if we’re honest we may now just be a tiny bit broody.

Marc Jacobs to drop celebrities from his catwalk shows

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2010
Marc Jacobs and Nathalie Rykiel honored by French culture minister in Paris

Are some designers getting sick of celebrities taking up the attention in fashion week catwalk seats? If rumours that Marc Jacobs is not hosting a star studded row of seats at his New York show this week are to believed, then the answer could be yes.

The designer, who always manages to wow us more with his creations, than celebrity bums on seats, told NYMag: ‘I’m not into the celebrity thing . . . like we used to. That’s boring’.

In the past Marc has invited a range of celebs including Posh and Madonna and last year he even turned his attention to Lady Gaga, who was invited because she was performing at the after-party. However, it seems she was the final nail on the celebrity invite coffin as she famously missed his show because she arrived late.

After all the news about how much celebrities are paid to attend these shows, if this trend carries on to other designers there could be hole in their paychecks.
