Valentine present ideas: Alice in Wonderland inspired jewellery by Swarovski

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010

Wonderland and Swarovski.jpg

Tim Burton’s remake of Alice in Wonderland is going to be huge.

Not only because we can’t wait to see what the kooky director has done to one of our favourite childhood books but also the fact that every designer possible, including Tom Binns and Stella McCartney, is jumping in on the act.

Next on the Wonderland bandwagon is our favourite jewellery brand Swarovski, which has teamed up with Disney to create a limited edition range.

Pieces in the Alice in Wonderland collection include a sparrow rose necklace, and charms as well as a cute rabbit pendant.

We’ll be making sure we get our hands on some of these on time

Could JLS’s Marvin be the next Vivienne Westwood model?

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010
The Brit Awards 2010 - Shortlist Announced: Show

The world of celebrity goes in swings and roundabouts with many actresses turning into singers, singers turning to acting and models going into any industry they please.

However, we’re slightly surprised to hear that the latest “switcher” could be X Factor runner up Marvin.

According to the Mirror, the JLS boy band member has made quite an impression on iconic designer Vivienne Westwood who is hoping he may join the list of her strange model choices, including Pamela Anderson and Jo Wood, and model for her in the future.

Marvin told The Mirror: She asked me to walk the runway, and I was all up for doing it but we couldn’t work it out. That’s something I’d definitely love to do though,’

We’ll be watching this space.

Celebrities dress up for the US Valentines Day premier

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010

Valentines Day is slowly upon us and that only means one thing. The shops are full of cards, mini presents and teddies and cinemas full of slushy romantic films that you’ll be dragging you other half to.

Hot on the film list is the aptly named Valentines Day, which hits UK cinemas this week and is said to be the next Love Actually. And last night at the US premier loved up celebrities turned up on the red carpet in their droves to view it.

First up were Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, who looked every inch the Hollywood starlet in a very 50s white strapless knee length frock.

She was followed by stars of the film Jessica Alba, who looked stunning with her newly cropped hair and in a peacock green short tunic style dress and Anne Hathaway who looked sexy in a royal blue feathered strapless number.

However we think both ladies were beaten by their co-star Jessica Biel, who opted to go for a bright pink one shoulder flamenco style frock.

Jamie Winstone goes for red and fur at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010
London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010 - Arrivals

While Eva Green donned a safe black frock for the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010, Jamie Winstone decided to be daring and it wasn’t just her frock.

The actress stepped onto the red carpet in an on-trend red strapless frock, which we think looks very similar to the pink one worn by Sarah Jessica Parker at the Did you hear about the Morgans? premier last year.

She teamed this up with a matching clutch bag, shoes and lips.

However, far more daring than her racy red dress was her fur jacket. We hope we’re wrong about it being real, but if it’s not it does a very good job of looking it.

Dannii Minogue confirmed as the new face of Marks and Spencer

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010

Dannii.jpg

Last month we reported on rumours that Dannii Minogue was going to be the new face of Marks and Spencer and guess what? She is.

The pregnant X Factor judge and singer will be appearing in the new spring campaign alongside current Marks and Spencer models Mylene Klass and Twiggy. She will also be joined by VV Brown, Brazilian supermodel Ana Beatriz Barros, and Lisa Snowdon.

However, it seems Dannii will not be following in Mylene’s footsteps and showing off her baby bump during the campaign, as the ads are being shot right now and are due to be revealed next month. We can’t wait.

Eva Green keeps it simple at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010
London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010 - Arrivals

Last night actors and actresses took to the red carpet for the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010.

Eva Green turned up at the event at the London Film Museum looking stunning in a black patterned dress where she also presented the award for best film.

However the actress best known for her role alongside Daniel Craig in the James Bond film Casino Royale, added in some of her well known eccentric style with her patent stripped shoes, which we think make her look like she stepped in two giant wasps.

But we think her little faux pas is more than made up with her hair and make-up. We think Eva looked amazing with her 20s style hair and the orange lipstick against her pale skin really gives her that flapper look.

Burberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

Just when we though London Fashion Week couldn’t get anymore exciting, Burberry throws another surprise into the stitching.

It’s announced it will be streaming its Autumn/Winter 2010 catwalk show live in 3D to

While we’re watching the show which takes place at the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London, from our laptops, these select editors will be given specs designed by Christopher Bailey and treated to an amazing 3-D experience, which we dare say will be even better than Avatar.

Why we should all believe in fashion fate

By Andrea Petrou on February 8th, 2010

Clothes rail.jpg

Lauren Bravo writes:

I am not a superstitious person. I will walk under ladders. I take great delight in opening umbrellas indoors. I will put shoes on tables, open crisp packets upside down and gleefully skip around safe in the belief that a piano won’t suddenly fall from the sky and crush me under the weight of cosmic misfortune. I stopped believing horoscopes after Shelley Von Strunkel told me I was going to fail my A-levels, causing me a week of panic and the initial moves towards an alternative career as a welder.

No, I am not superstitious. Except, that is, for in one crucial area of life. Shopping.

As anyone who has recently ventured up a British high street will be aware, shopping isn’t the easy, breezy experience it used to be (in, say, the 1830s). For one thing, there’s the eternal sizing debate, which Andrea’s been exploring this past week with her denim inbetweener campaign (click here to complete our ShinyStyle size survey). When you have to make time in your schedule for winching yourself out of clothes you’ve managed to get stuck in (not to mention the inevitable newspaper interviews after the firemen have left the changing room with their cutting equipment), it does limit the potential to source perfect garments. And, y’know, sleep and things.

Then there’s the competitive element. As a general rule, the cheaper you go on the high street, the more aggressive and ruthless the shopping becomes. This is a result of what I like to term the “Treasure Theory”; that nagging feeling, as you stand and look round a crowded store full of discarded sweatpants and unseasonable kaftan tops, that somewhere in there exists a garment which could change your life.

It’s the logic that lies behind shops like TK Maxx and Matalan, convincing us that if we rummage for long enough, and use enough handbag force to elbow other shoppers out of our way, we will find the bargainous Chanel-alike among the sea of lamé prom dresses and pvc jackets. The only thing separating us from that item of dreams is a healthy dose of fashion fate.

Yes, one should never underestimate the role of destiny in shopping. I can’t be the only one who, when debating a purchase, hears the voice of Doris Day drift under the changing room door… “Que Sera, Sera… whatever will be, will be…”. How many times have you seen your perfect skirt being carried by somebody else, and followed them around the shop like a dog, hissing ‘drop it! Drop IT!’? How many times have you justified a pricey purchase with the fact that it is still there in your size, and so it is Meant to Be? How many times have you very nearly worn a dress, then changed on instinct at the last minute, only to turn up at an event finding your ex’s new girlfriend in the dress you nearly wore? That, my friends, is fashion fate.

I’ve suffered my fair share of blows, but last week, shopping destiny dealt me a good hand. Back in December I had seen a studded black jacket in H&M. I had picked it up, gone ‘ooh’, been told by my friend that it felt like lizard scales and was therefore creepy, and put it back on the rail. I thought no more of it. But then, as the days passed, I started to find this jacket suddenly entering my thoughts. It would pop into my mind as I stood in front of the wardrobe every morning. I would think “if I had that studded jacket, I could wear it with that. If I had that studded jacket, it would look perfect with this”, and so on, until I had pretty much convinced myself that the studded jacket was the key to my future happiness.

So then began a mad pursuit of the studded jacket across every H&M in London. Oxford Circus had sold out, Marble Arch had sold out, Regent Street only had it in a size 8. Everywhere I enquired, I got sad, pitying head-shakes, as though the shop assistants knew they were denying me outfit perfection. I trudged the streets for days, from store to store. I started hallucinating studded jackets, seeing them in mirrors and window reflections and draped over small children on buses. Eventually, I gave up and resigned myself to that fact that the studded jacket was not meant to be in my life.

THEN, several weeks later, thoughts of studded jackets entirely out of my head, I was doing a quick after-work shop dash and decided to pop into H&M to buy some earrings. I very nearly didn’t, as I was late, but something in my gut told me to go in (either fate, or a Prêt meatball wrap). So I did, and there, glinting at me across the store, I saw it. It wasn’t even on a hanger, it was just flung across the top of a rail, looking lonely. As I ran towards it, arms outstretched, I convinced myself it wouldn’t be my size. “It will be the ruddy size 8, don’t get your hopes up”, I thought. So imagine my joy when I got there, clutched it in my sweaty palms and discovered it WAS my size! Fashion fate was on my side for once, and the key to styling happiness was finally mine! Oh, wondrous kismet!

(Actually it turns out the jacket doesn’t go with as many things as I thought it would. It’s also a bit too long, and really does feel like lizard skin. But hey, I wouldn’t have swapped that moment for anything).

Nicola Roberts, looking demure in a simple off white dress and cinched skinny belt, heads to dinner at Nobu with her boyfriend

Nicola Roberts steps out looking demure in a simple off white dress and a cinched skinny belt, as she heads to dinner at Nobu with her boyfriend.

The Girl’s Aloud singer, who has been working with politicians and campaigning for a UK sunbed ban for under 18′s and whose TV documentary, highlighting the dangers of excessive tanning, was aired last night, looked stunning in the frock that matched her naturally pale skin tone perfectly.

Team up an off white dress with a pastel coloured belt, along with bright lipstick to add a touch of colour and style to an otherwise simple look.

Valentines present idea: Storm’s pretty pink watches

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010

Mia Storm.JPG

Be pretty in pink this spring with a new redesigned range of watches by Storm.

The funky watches have been created following many of us clamouring to get our hands on the older designs when they first hit the stores a while ago.

They’ve been redesigned in feminine gold and pink and we also love the Mia watch, which has also been designed in gold and red making it a perfect Valentine’s present (start dropping hints now).

However, you better hurry as the limited edition pieces won’t hang around for long.

The watches are available from Storm’s 11 standalone stores, situated in London’s Carnaby Street, Westfield Shopping Centre, Birmingham, Brighton, Bromley, Newquay, Truro, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Plymouth, and Watford.

H&M got Sonia Rykiel on board by previously copying her designs

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010
Sonia Rykiel & H&M Underwear Collection Launch - Party in Le Grand Palais

Have you ever wondered how highstreet stores get top designers on-board? Well, if rumours are to believed then perhaps it’s by copying their designs in the first place.

In an interview with Nylon Magazine Nathalie Rykiel, creative director at Sonia Rykiel, said she’d seen some very similar clothes to the brand’s designs in H&M, and said this was one of the main reasons she decided to team up with the Swedish chain store.

Are you asking if H&M has used my designs?,” she asked Nylon magazine in an interview. “Well, yes, of course! They copy me all the time! Finally I said, ‘Look, if you want your girls to wear Sonia Rykiel from H&M, let’s let them have the real thing!’”

And the result? Well we’re sure you’ve seen the naughty-but-nice lingerie line for H&M and we’re waiting with baited breath for the next installment of knitwear, which will be hitting H&M in the very near future.

Dunhill asks celebrities to pucker up and help raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010

Dunhill kisses.jpg

There’s so many charity and fashion collaborations this year, that we’re struggling to keep up. Not that we’re complaining, they’re all for good causes.

However, instead of the the number of designers who have asked celebrities to create clothing and accessories, Dunhill is just asking for famous ladies lips.

The Heritage brand will be hosting a charity auction in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity this Valentine’s Day and has asked female celebs including Jerry Hall, Louise Redknapp, Gillian Anderson and Emilia Fox, to all plant a kiss on a Dunhill collar to support the cause.

It hopes these kisses will lead to the shirts being sold off at high auction prices when they are listed on Ebay, and all proceeds will be donated to The Prostate Cancer Charity.

In addition to the shirt bearing the mark of a celebrity kiss and autograph, each auction winner will also get a voucher for a Dunhill custom made tailored shirt, to be redeemed at Bourdon House. We think this would make an excellent present for your other half.

Beyoncé gives pieces of her Deréon Line to Nintendo’s Style Savvy DS game

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010

Beyonce Nintendo.jpg

We’ve fallen in love with Nintendo’s Style Savvy game for the DS and DSI, which is our ultimate definition of fashion fun.

Afterall, what fashionista wouldn’t love being able to run her own virtual clothing boutique, style customers and participate in catwalk shows?

And now it seems this game is about to get better.

Beyonce has decided to lend a hand and offer gamers the chance to style their virtual customers in the same clothes she wears.

She’s giving Nintendo five designs from the real-life Deréon clothing line, created by herself and her mum, Tina Knowles.

Beyonce said: “Style Savvy is all about creativity and fashion, both of which are really important to me.”

Although exact download dates have not yet been released, Nintendo has said it expects the designs to be available in the very near future. We can’t wait, after all what could be better than a Beyonce fashion clone?

We heart Converse’s RED RED LOVE collection

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010

Converse One.jpg

Wear your heart on your feet and step into Valentines day in creative style with Converse’s new collection. The retro footwear designer has launched RED RED LOVE, which includes a range of heart adorned trainers sporting a “I heart ………” logo.

The idea is you fill in the blank with whatever it is you love with a waterproof fabric pen.
And if you think that sounds good then you’ll be even more pleased to hear that proceeds from this creative range go to fight AIDS in Africa.

We think we may have to buy more than one of these pairs as we just can’t decide what it is we love the most (yes, we know, any excuse).

Rihanna wears an unfinished jumpsuit to perform at the Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam

By Andrea Petrou on February 5th, 2010

Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam

More times than not Rihanna manages to pull off styles no-one else would get away with.

She looked stunning in her risky structured and panelled tulle dress from Viktor & Rolf’s spring 2010 collection, which she bravely wore to the Grammys and her videos have always been peppered with her kooky and daring fashion personality.

However, as much as we’d like to sing the starlets praises all the time, we can’t find anything right with the outfit she decided to wear while perfroming at the Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam this week.

The, outfit looks as though Rihanna’s designer ran out of fabric, while she was making what we can only think is a catsuit and the white trimming looks as though it came straight from Santa’s suit. Also underwear as outerwear maybe the new trend, but we’re not sure if Rihanna got the look right.

Let us know what you think about this outfit by leaving your comments below.
