Best shoes for spring – what you should and shouldn’t be wearing

By Andrea Petrou on March 4th, 2010

Lauren Bravo writes: Spring is here! For once in our worryingly incongruous meteorological climate, the weather has got it right. March started and BAM, the sun is out, chill has gone and we can all venture out in our second-warmest jackets with all-over thermal insulation, just as fashion intended.

But despite all the gaiety and the promise of daffodils, baby chicks, crème-egg-and-hot-cross-bun sandwiches etc, there’s also that nagging feeling at the back of my mind. Because spring means, inevitably, summer. And summer means, inevitably, shoe dilemmas. Or sweaty tube rides, blisters, and shoe dilemmas.

As a lifelong adversary of the flipflop, warm weather footwear has always caused me issues. Instead of the beautiful colours and pleasing, clunky form of proper shoes, in summer we’re suddenly expected to do little more than strap a sole to our feet with a bit of flimsy metallic lacing and try to keep them on as we negotiate miniature golf courses. Summer footwear doesn’t contribute to an outfit; it is demanding, with its rubbing and its chafing and its necessitating a pedicure. Gone is the powerful stomp of the Alpha female, and in comes the pathetic flap-flap of the summer trudger.

Thankfully, this time round it looks like we’ll have other opinions. Spring/summer 2010 is presenting us with two intriguing shoe options: the Midi Heel Mum Shoe and the Clog. Both offer more substance and coverage than the average summer shoe trend, thus should be greeted with happy gratitude by shopper bored with sloppy Havaianas, and, even better, we don’t have to wait till the temperature hikes to start wearing them. But which will you be sporting?

First up is the midi heel, which one suspects will be the more enduring trend, a) because they are less ridiculous and b) because you can wear them, and, like, still walk and everything. They are a gift to women with feet everywhere. After years of heels growing more and more vertiginous, until our current point where shops seem to have lost sight of what shoes were originally intended for and lapsed into some form of masochistic battle weaponry, fashion folk are finally lowering the stakes again.

I have had a midi heel fixation for a little while now, hunting out those elusive 2-3 inch styles in a sea of six inch beasts. Midi heels confirm the theory that women really can have it all – we can have feeling in our toes AND a sexy clip-clop when we walk, AND look presentable all at the same time. Life really is better in the middle, it’s just like that Clover ad says.

As a wider trend, midi heels will be around for a good few seasons, but this summer they’ll be used more specifically as support for the 1970s-style Mum shoe; a beachy, sturdy, hippieish affair normally spotted on middle-aged eco campaigners and librarians. With espadrille soles, ankle ties, low wedges and wide, comfortable straps all key features, it’s a daunting trend for those of us who’ve spent winter glued into our biker boots. But you can always toughen up the look with a leather jacket and a slash of vibrant lipstick. Hemp kaftan optional.

Then there’s the other contender, a far less user-friendly prospect. As far as street-worthy trends go it’s in its infancy, but best make your peace with them now because it won’t be long before they’re ‘it shoe’ du jour. So far, this is what we know about clogs: Dutch people are supposed to wear them; Dutch people don’t really wear them, but they do sell them in souvenir shops; Alexa Chung wore them on the cover of March Vogue; actually, Alexa Chung’s been wearing them everywhere; Alexa Chung looks good in them; we may, or may not, also look good in them (sources are yet to confirm whether this is in direct proportion to one’s resemblance to Alexa Chung).

But before we dismiss them as crazy shoes for crazy women, we should consider the advantages of clogs. They are chunky, thus far easier to wear than spring’s other heel trend, ‘the spindle’. They are wooden, thus far less likely to come apart in the middle of Oxford Street and require you to hop home. They are actually pretty flattering, if worn with a teeny skirt and black opaques or, when it gets warmer, bare legs with some sort of sundress and denim jacket. They are a subtle nod to the prairie trend that’s set to hit, far preferable to a broderie anglaise smock and a stetson. And if anyone mocks you, you can kick them where it hurts and do some serious damage.

So there we have it, forget the summer trudgers and embrace the new spring stompers. And by the time you’ve mastered your clog dance, it’ll be winter again without anybody noticing.

ShinyStyle watch: Topshop A/W2010 catwalk show at LFW

By Andrea Petrou on March 3rd, 2010

We know London Fashion Week is well and truly over for another season, and although we managed to bring you news of many of the shows we failed on the Topshop front.

Therefore to make up for it we’ve managed to get hold of the much coveted catwalk show.
The theme for the highstreet store’s A/W2010 catwalk was animal and ethical with models walking down the runway in a range of animal print masks.

According to to Jacqui Markham, Topshop Joint Head of Design, the collection was inspired by two elements; camping in the woods and the other a twisted Narnia environment.

We know you’ll love the video as much as we did and for once we’re actually looking forward to the autumn.

Debenhams to be the first highstreet store to use a disabled model

By Andrea Petrou on March 3rd, 2010

Ben De.jpg

Could the stringent modelling rules gradually be being broken down? Not only have we seen a huge array of plus size models on the catwalk (thanks Mark Fast) but it also now seems disabled women are getting a chance to pose in front of the camera too.

In a first for highstreet stores Debenhams has announced it will use 32 year old Shannon Murray who has been confined to a wheelchair, since breaking her neck as a teenager for its display window photography and also online. Joining her in modelling for the ‘Principles by Ben de Lisi’ range will be Kate Fullman, a size 16 model, Tess Montgomery, a petite 5”4 model, and Tokumbo Daniel, a size 10 model.

Michael Sharp, Debenhams‘ Deputy Chief Executive, said: “We cater for women of all shapes and sizes, young and old, non-disabled and disabled, so we wanted our windows to reflect this choice.”

Could this be the catalyst for more stores to begin using “normal” girls? We really do hope so.

Naomi Campbell accused of punching her driver and running away

By Andrea Petrou on March 3rd, 2010

Naomi_Campbell big.jpg

Naomi Campbell may have been doing a great job recently, raising money for victims of the Haiti Earthquake and carrying on the late Alexander McQueen’s memory but it seems she can’t stop her old ways either.

According to reports the supermodel is back to her bad behaviour after punching the driver of the luxury Cadillac Escalade she was being driven around in it, causing his head to hit the steering wheel and bruising his right eye.

He told police the supermodel became angry and started to hit him from the backseat and when he stopped the car to call the cops Naomi jumped out and ran away.

However her spokesman has said the model will talk to police “when the time is right.”

Jeff Raymond said:”There shouldn’t be a rush to judgement.

“Naomi will cooperate voluntarily, and there is more to the story than meets the eye.”

This isn’t the first time Naomi has hit out, in 2004 she and boyfriend Matteo Marzotto split up after he claimed he couldn’t deal with her lashing out. In 2008 she was also sentenced by a London court to 200 hours of community service after pleading guilty to assaulting two police officers during an expletive-filled incident after she had discovered an airline had lost one of her bags.

And she also had to carry out community service in New York after being convicted of throwing a mobile phone at housekeeper over a pair of jeans. Oh dear.

Speedo Shapeline: we review made to measure swimsuit for all shapes and sizes

By shinychris on March 2nd, 2010

Speedo Sculpture Shapeline Ladies Group Shot.JPGSpeedo has introduced a new range of swimwear for women. Shapeline is the result of a three year project during which Speedo Aqualab technologists scanned the body shapes of 5,400 real women.

The swimwear manufacturer claims the measurements many manufacturers use as the basis of women’s sizes are completely inaccurate. Since the 1950s when the measurements were first taken, women have become taller, larger round the waist, and have bigger hips and busts. Is it any wonder then that most of us can’t find a swimsuit to fit?

The swimwear manufacturer claims its new Shapeline suits are as close to a made to measure swimsuit as you can get. But does Speedo’s Shapeline live up to the hype?Shiny Style went along to Speedo’s London Covent Garden Store to find out.

The first difference with the Speedo Shapeline suit is you need to be professionally measured for your suit. Waist, hip, bust and body length measurements are essential to getting the right fit. The suit comes in sizes 10 to 20 and cup sizes 30B to 34G and the theory is once your individual measurements are taken into account you should get a costume which fits so well that it looks as though it has been made just for you.

Speedo’s research reveals that women’s bodyshapes fall into three distinct categories: Bottom Hourglass, women who have bottoms and hips that are bigger than their chests; Hourglass, women who have equally wide hips and chests; and Top Hourglass, women who have chests and shoulders bigger than their bottom and hips.

Speedo has developed three styles of swimsuits to enhance each of these body shapes: The Bustshaper, the Waistshaper and the Tummy and Hip Sculptor. I came out as a top hourglass with a long body so the Bustshaper was the suit for me.

Trying it on for the first time was an experience in itself. For a start it is not easy to get into. The Bustshaper has an integral bra inside which needs to be folded down at the front while you pull on the lower half of the suit. The costume itself feels a little bit like a corset and it is also quite difficult to fasten the bra up at the back. But it is worth persevering. Once the suit is on it looks fantastic.

Used to seeing my reflection in a swimsuit which cuts into my shoulders and squashes my bust into a mis-shapen doughnut just above my bulgy midriff, I was not prepared for what I saw. My bust was defined and up where it should be, my waist and tummy looked neater and flatter and the longer straps sat comfortably on my shoulders. No digging, no rubbing, no red marks. For once I didn’t feel depressed looking at myself in a swimsuit in the changing room mirror! I would be happy to stroll down the beach or lounge on the side of the pool in this suit all day.

Available from Speedo stores, Bravissimo, Fenwick and Rigby and Peller, The Shapeline is probably more for the recreational then the serious swimmer and at £100 it’s not cheap. But it does flatter your best bits, disguise the bits you don’t like and makes you feel amazingly confident . Surely that has to be worth splashing out on.

Nicola Roberts hits back at “skinny” claims

By Andrea Petrou on March 2nd, 2010

Nicola.jpg

Nicola Roberts has hit back at people who claim she’s been starving herself and is too thin.

The Girls Aloud singer said her size 6 frame was natural and not because of her diet.

She told Closer magazine: “Everyone keeps talking about my weight, which I find so ridiculous.

“I’m a size 6 and I’m not ashamed of that – I have a naturally small frame and it’s the way I’ve always been. I’ve not been starving myself or exercising every day.”

We’re not sure what to beleive when it comes to stars claiming their tiny figures, afterall Nicole Ritchie claimed for years she was “healthy”. However a source close to the group claimed “all the girls do eat.” We’ll just have to wait and see.

Psst, is Lady Gaga the new inspiration for Muppets star Miss Piggy?

By Andrea Petrou on March 2nd, 2010

Lady gaga.jpg

It seems everybody wants a bit of Lady Gaga, and even animaters are getting on the bandwagon.

According to the rumour mill Miss Piggy’s character in the forthcoming Muppet movie, currently titled The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made, will be Lady Gaga-inspired.

“Miss Piggy ends up becoming like a Lady Gaga-esque character living in Europe,” a source said. “Kermit ends up being destitute and the main characters find him living in squalor.”

We’re not sure if this is a massive compliment or an insult to the wacky Lady although we can’t help but think she bought it on herself after arriving with Kermit the frog as her date to last year’s Video music awards.

Moises De La Renta designs t-shirt range for Mango

By Andrea Petrou on March 2nd, 2010

Moises.jpg

It’s not unusual for a child of a fashion designer to follow in their parents footsteps. However, the twist in Oscar De La Renta’s son’s story is that he’ll be going for highstreet rather than high end like his father.

Twenty five year old Moises has designed a limited edition range of T-Shirts for Mango, which are said to fuse his father’s timeless aesthetic with his own youthful rock ‘n’ roll edge.

The designer told Vogue.com: “My inspirations for this collection were the traditional romantic themes: from pretty patchworks with summer flowers in sombre colours, such as rose, violet, grey and black, to graphic illusions which combine transparent effects, with shiny gems and adornments in between.”

The t-shirts will go on sale this month and range from £25 to £45. We’re sure they won’t be hanging around for long though.

We think a big congratulations is in order fo Coco Rocha who has just announced she has got engaged to interior designer boyfriend James Conran.

The 21 year old Canadian model come designer, told fans on her blog yesterday: “I’m very happy to announce that I am engaged. Mr. Conran proposed last week and I most definitely accepted. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy as I am right now. I can’t wait to start the rest of my life with him…

“Love you with all my heart James, xoxo, Coco.”

Event: Lady Gaga joins in with The MAC VIVA GLAM launch to benefit the MAC AIDS Fund

By Andrea Petrou on March 2nd, 2010

It was a case of who could look the most disheveled at last night’s MAC Viva Glam product launch to benefit the MAC AIDS Fund in London.

Lady Gaga, who fronted the campaign alongside Cyndi Lauper, as always stole the style show, appearing in a black lace leotard with sharp shoulders. She finished the look with lace stockings, which she wore over the bodysuit as well as a mamouth PVC style hat in the shape of a flower and her trademark eye mask.

However, after her appearance it seems the style took a turn for the worse. Cyndi Lauper turned up with a perm more fit for the 80s, making her look more like a poodle than a celebrity, while usually flawless Agyness Deyn looked more John Lenon than model with her blue sunglasses.

Sharon Osbourne however, hasn’t really given us any cause for comment as she seemingly left her coat on all night.
