Why bare legs are a national style crime

By laurenbravo on March 23rd, 2010

wenn2711201.jpgLauren Bravo writes:

Fact for the day: did you know that in France, a girl wearing a winter coat with a miniskirt and bare legs is said to be dressing “a l’anglaise”? It’s true, I heard it somewhere.

Now, I’m not suggesting we should all be cowering with collective national shame – after all, our oh-so-chic Gaelic cousins have never quite understood British style endeavours. Across the channel, fashion rules prevail with the force of William the Conqueror. No black with brown or navy, no cleavage, no garish makeup, no dyed hair, non non non! We, meanwhile, are categorised by our somewhat ‘laissez-faire’ attitude toward dressing (I believe in translation that means “falling headfirst into a wardrobe and wearing whatever comes out stuck to you”), complete with daring ‘dos, colour clashing and yes, maybe, a little flesh-flashing when the mood takes us.

But I can’t help feeling that on this occasion, maybe we should pay heed to les femmes françaises. Because if they think that the English are a nation of under-clothed Cinderellas, wandering numbly through the snow with our legs out, I’m afraid I’m inclined to agree with them. Zeut alors.

Unseasonal bare legs are becoming something of an epidemic, sweeping the country like a monster from a ’50s B-movie. It’s practically sport, on an average night out, to keep a tally of every girl you see sporting the stilettos-and-blue-veined-stubble look, complete with massive coat poached off a man under the guise of helpless femininity (Why these blokes never just say “You should have dressed for January then, you silly bint” will remain an eternal mystery). Bonus points if it is raining, or she is walking barefoot and carrying her shoes.

Why, then? Aside from a lyrca allergy or maybe malaria, I can’t find a single reason for bare legs with a mini before June. Our shops are well-stocked with tights of every colour and print imaginable, leggings are still riding first-class on the trend train, and this season we have the additional pleasure of socks to toy with – yet so many women still plump for the chicken skin and hypothermia.

Obviously British Weather is partly to blame. In our flighty climate, particularly during these transitional months, it’s hard to know what to wear. Put on the big coat and the sun will come out, put on the little jacket and it will start snowing as soon as you get to the bus stop. And this is coupled with our traditional hardiness, and proud optimism where the onset of summer is concerned. It’s the same reason we go out and buy a Calippo as soon as we hear a bumblebee, and spend our bank holidays sitting on pebble beaches under a blanket saying “Well, isn’t this nice?”

Then there’s the celebrity factor. Celebs do bare legs all the time, and yes, most of the time they look ruddy gorgeous. But as far as I can deduce, being famous means you become suddenly impervious to weather. You don’t feel cold, or wind, or rain, and so you can stay committed to the cause of leg-baring on red carpets throughout the winter months. As an antidote to this deception, I suggest you look in the mirror before a night out and ask yourself: Am I a celebrity? Am I going to the Brits? Or am I in fact a normal girl, going to a Wetherspoons in Chorley?

On that note, ladies, think of all the great reasons there are to keep your legs covered until summer. For starters, the obvious: you won’t need to shave! You’ll save so much time! Take up crochet or something (in fact, crochet yourself some long johns, there’s a plan). Then the almost-as-obvious: you will be WARMER. You can stop borrowing coats from men, you won’t have to do that frostbitten hobble to the kebab shop, and hell, you might not even NEED the kebab because you won’t be losing as much of your body heat through your thighs.

There are also style kudos to be earned – much as the WAG contingent of our glossies has been trying to persuade us otherwise, true fashionistas know the truth: miniskirts were just made to be worn with tights. Think about it; it’s the reason they were both invented in the ’60s. With tights you can go even shorter, cover your modesty, save yourselves from blisters, make a handy tea strainer if needed, and avoid people asking if you’ve ever witnessed an English November before.

Yes, I am prepared to add this matter to the list of Things the French Get Right, under steak, Chanel, cheese and Thierry Henry. Come summer, you can frolic around as bare legged as you like. But for now, I will say zis only once: leave the goosebumps on the frogs’ legs, and keep yours under wraps.

Alexander McQueen’s ashes to be scattered on the Isle of Skye

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

Thumbnail image for Alex.jpg

Alexander McQueen’s ashes are to be scattered on the Isle of Skye.

The designer, who was born and bought up in East London, is said to have felt a strong connection to the birthplace of his father Ronald. He had previously told his family he wanted the island to be his final resting place.

Mr McQueen’s brother Michael said: “Alexander was back and forward all over the world, but he felt at home when he was in Scotland”

And his love of the Scottish Isle’s showed in his work including his ‘Highland Rape’ collection and use of tartan in his pieces.

First looks: Stills from the Sex and The City 2 film

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

We were one of the first to bring you the SATC 2 trailer (if you haven’t seen it click here) and now we’re really pleased to say we’ve managed to get hold of some of the first stills for the film that hits cinemas in May this year.

The pictures, courtesy of New Line Cinema, in association with Home Box Office, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures give us a huge taster of what we can expect to see from the film, and judging by these stills we’re in for a fashion treat.

Get a spring/summer outfit for £21 from Store Twenty One

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

We don’t usually concentrate on just one store when we do product galleries. But when an email telling us that we could get a whole outfit for £21 landed into our inboxes we couldn’t help but share.

And for those thinking it’s just another Primark creation, it’s not.

Store Twenty One has created an outfit perfect for spring days and summer nights, offering on-trend tassel sandals (team up with socks at your own risk) for £7, a belt for £4 and a batwing boho style frock for £12.

Not only is this a great outfit altogether but we can think of at least half a dozen other items in our wardrobes that will look perfect with the shoes, and the belt.

We’ve put together a gallery so you can see exactly what you’re getting for your cash and for £21 we really don’t need any justification to get those credit cards out.

The collection will be available online shortly, but if you can’t wait until then, head to stores now.

Fashion Election: Who is the most stylish MP’s wife?

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

Politician’s wives are becoming nearly as famous as their other halves across the fashion world. The dowdy outfits donned by these supportive female figures have been binned and replaced by must-have wardrobe labels such as Erdem (a favourite of Sarah Brown) Calvin Klein (as worn by Michelle Obama) and even Marks and Spencer (who can forget Samantha Cameron’s polka dot dress).

And as they become more and more popular, the media world is alight with news of Samantha Cameron’s pregnancy, the fashion spotlight on these women becomes bigger.

Rarely a day goes by without some comment about Michelle Obama’s latest outfit hitting the news wires and Sarah Brown has thrown herself into the fashion world, becoming an iconic figure of many high profile events. She jointly opened London Fashion Week this year (we were there to see it and we have to admit her speech was inspiring) appeared at the Elle Style awards and also held a reception for the Cosmopolitan Women Of The Year at Downing Street.

However, as in any industry there’s always the quiet dark horse, and it’s no different here with Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg‘s wife Miriam Gonzalez staying out of the fashion spotlight.

However, although she may not be fashion forward Mrs Clegg knows exactly how to dress. She’s appeared alongside the MP on various occasions in stylish frocks, and even donned the braces look for one event, which we think is slightly daring but works incredibly well.

With four stylish women who all do a great job of promoting fashion and keeping in with political values we’re a little bit torn as to who to award the fashion crown to.

So once again we’ve decided to leave it to you. View the gallery below and then vote in the ballot box to tell us who you think is the most stylish. And if there’s anything else you want to say, tell us by leaving your comments in the box below.

First looks: Dannii Minogue for Marks and Spencer

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

Dannii M&S1.jpg

A few months ago we got ourselves into a little bit of a tizzy after hearing the news that Dannii Minogue was going to pose alongside the famous faces of Marks and Spencer in its summer campaign.

So you can imagine how excited we were today, when we spotted the few first shots of the singer and X-Factor judge in her full M&S glory.

Joining iconic model Twiggy, Mylene Klass and Lisa Snowden, Dannii looks every inch a Mark’s girl posing in Jackie O sunglasses and shift dress as well as cute floral frocks. However there’s no sign of Dannii’s baby bump in any of these shots

We can’t wait till the range hits the shops in a few weeks.

Christian Louboutin isn’t excited about Sex and The City 2

By Andrea Petrou on March 23rd, 2010

SATC 2 Halston.jpg

With the Sex and The City 2 film looming in the not so far distance, we’re getting ready for backstage gossip, promotions and of course lots of pictures of the girls.

However one person doesn’t seem so excited by all the drama surrounding the film and that’s one of our favourite shoe designers Christian Louboutin.

Following a bust up with Manolo Blahnik, the designer associated with the Sex and The City girl’s footwear, producers decided to enlist Louboutin’s creations for the next film.

Any other designer would be over the moon at the thought of this, but Louboutin doesn’t seem to fussed.

He told The Guardian: “I think it’s a good thing because people tell me it is. I don’t have a TV, you see.”

We would love for you to come over to ours and watch the series Mr Louboutin and no need to bring the popcorn, a pair of shoes would be just fine.

Asymmetric at the Olivier Awards: Kim Cattrall vs Rachel Weisz

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Rachel Olivier.jpg

It was a night of fabulous fashion at the Olivier 2010 awards. But like any ceremony there’s always the two ladies that turn up in the same style. And for this event it was two of our best dressed.

Kim Cattrall gave a nod to the 80s in her short white frock complete with a satin ruffle along the top, while Best Actress winner Rachel Weisz opted for a grey maxi frock, which in comparrison to Kim’s was quite plain.

However, sometimes simple is better than decorative, so we want you to tell us who wore the asymmetric look better.

Vote below and let us know.

Worst dressed: Phylicia Rashad turns up in Halloween costume for the 2010 Oliver awards

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Phylicia Rashad.jpg
This year’s red carpet events are becoming slightly disappointing as stars become style savvy and give us very little to moan about in the fashion stakes.

And this year’s Olivier awards were no different with many celebs impressing with their frocks on the red carpet.

However, one star that failed to make the fashion grade this year was actress Phylicia Rashad, who decided to wear, what we can only describe as a Halloween outfit to the event.

The chiffon patterned billowing frock, complete with medieval embroidered cuffs, looks like it would fit more comfortably into a children’s dress up box (we were going to say bin but we thought it may be slightly harsh).

However we want to know what you think. Leave your comments below and let us know.

Gallery: Best dressed stars on the 2010 Olivier awards red carpet

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

We’ve already picked Rachel as our winner for the red carpet best dressed at this year’s Olivier awards. However, it would be very unfair of us not to mention the rest of the ladies who sparkled in their frocks last night.

Former Spice Girl and tomboy Mel C, looked absolutely stunning in her almost gothic black high neck dress complete with puff sleeves, while Hannah Waddingham, who iscurrently playing the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot showed short puffball frocks we’re still a big hit on the red carpet.

And of course the night wouldn’t be complete without some red glamour as worn by Gillian Anderson and US actress Sierra Boggess, although we think Sierra was most definitely the lady in red here.

View our gallery to see more of the best dressed starlets and as always let us know what you think by leaving your comments below.

Rachel Weisz wins our best dressed award for her frock at the 2010 Olivier awards

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Rachel Olivier.jpg

Wow what can we say about Rachel Weisz’s frock that isn’t negative. Absolutely nothing.

The starlet who carried off the best actress award for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams’ classic play A Streetcar Named Desire, also wins our best dressed award for her grey maxi asymmetric dress, which she wore to the 2010 Olivier awards last night.

The actress, who almost never puts a foot wrong when it comes to red carpet fashion kept it simple with this frock, yet her red lips, against the rest of her pale make-up and loose hair really stepped up her look. We heart this actresses style.

Let us know if you agree by leaving your comments below.

Kim Cattrall shows she still has SATC style at the 2010 Olivier awards

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Kim Olivier.jpg

While her glamourous co-stars were showing off their style in the US, Kim Cattrall flew the flag for Sex and The City style in the UK last night. The forth member of our favourite sitcom turned up at the Olivier 2010 awards in a white short asymmetric body-con frock complete with a very 80s satin ruffle.

We know her look has been criticised by some of the press, namely the Mirror which called the frock a “fashion disaster” and said “Kim [was the] wrong side of 40 for all this frou-frou in 80s white,” but we have to disagree.

As always we think the SATC star looks stunning. And if we can wear a dress like that when we’re 40 we won’t be complaining.

Tell us what you think of Kim’s frock by leaving your comments below.

Yay or nay? Kiera Knightley’s Erdem frock at the Olivier Awards 2010

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Kiera Olivier.jpg
It was another star studded evening last night where stars came out to play on the red carpet for the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

First to grab our attention on the red carpet was British starlet Kiera Knightley who a best supporting actress nominee for playing a manipulative movie starlet in the play The Misanthrope.

However, we’re not too sure if we like or loathe her maxi, round necked capped sleeve Erdem dress which looks a little bit like our grandma’s curtains. So we’ve decided to let you decide.

Vote below and let us know if her dress was a hit or miss last night.

Zac Posen to design Coco Rocha’s wedding dress?

By Andrea Petrou on March 22nd, 2010

Coco.jpg
A few weeks after Lara Stone announced her wedding dress designer would be Riccardo Tisci, supermodel Coco Rocha has said she’ll be enlisting the creative talents of Zac Posen for her frock.

We had thought the model, come designer would be designing her own dress but she confirmed the news on Twitter.

“Mr. Zac Posen is the best! I met with him to discuss wedding dress designs and immediately sketches were flying… So exciting!!,” she wrote on her page.

We can’t wait to see the design Coco chooses, and will her dress be better than Miss Stone’s?

We see a real life fashion bride wars coming up quite soon.
