House of Fraser launches Kenneth Cole New York range

By Andrea Petrou on March 17th, 2010

KC.jpg

House of Fraser has launched a women’s footwear range from Kenneth Cole New York with ultra comfy shoe technology.

The full Kenneth Cole New York colection includes women’s footwear, handbags, and jewellery.

And it’s good news for girls who find it painful to walk in heels, as the shoe collection is said to have exclusive patented cushioning system, called 925 Technology, which offers comfort and style by incorporating sheepskin and cushion soles into the shoes.
And it’s everywhere: From pointy toe flats and motorcycle boots to strappy stilettos and evening heeled styles.

We think it’s more than justified to spend that little bit more on those pairs of heels if we don’t need to buy flats for our bags, don’t you?

How to: be a customising queen

By laurenbravo on March 17th, 2010

AdultSewing.jpgThe old adage goes, a stitch in time saves nine. And a stitch in the right place might just save you a lot of money and shopping hassle. With celebrities from Eva Longoria and Rachel Bilson to Tilda Swinton and Nicole Kidman all admitting they like to kick back with some sewing, now might be the time to rediscover your inner 50s housewife, and learn how to customise your clothes.

Now, when we say ‘customising’, we’re not harking back to DT lessons at school, when you would turn a pair of jeans into a ‘funky’ denim skirt with the addition of some pink sequinned mesh and a flower corsage made out of zips. No. The proper, grown-up art of being able to alter garments – I’m tempted to call it seamstressery – is a skill well worth learning.

Think of all the times you’ve bought a gorgeous dress, probably for too much money, then relegated it to the back of the wardrobe after a couple of wears because it just doesn’t fit quite right. Then think of all the stuff you’ve nearly bought, but had to put back at the last minute because it was that bit too long, or big, or had a neckline that made you look like your Great Aunt Hilda. Wouldn’t your wardrobe be in better shape if you could only take to it with a whizzy needle and a bit of know-how?

So here are our top-tips for becoming a customising queen:

Get back to school: If there isn’t a dressmaking relative or friend handy to teach you the basics, sign up to learn it from a pro. Where better than London College of Fashion, which offers a 9-week basic sewing skills workshop for £380. Sign up here, or search for classes in your area. We also love DIY fashion blog Threadbanger, for on-trend sewing tips and tutorials.

Wind the bobbin up: There’s a lot you can do by hand, but for speed, accuracy and the sheer joy of having a new toy to tinker with, get yourself a sewing machine. At upwards of £100, buying them new can be quite a hefty investment so check out eBay for some second-hand bargains. Alternatively, Cooper Sewing Machines have some great discount deals.

Stock up: A sewing kit like this one provides a great stash of needles, pins, buttons and thread in every colour you’re likely to need. As a rule, try to use cotton thread on natural fabrics and polyester thread on man-made. Think of it like not mixing grape and grain, if that helps you.

Don’t get scissor happy: Remember, you can always take more off, but once it’s off it’s pretty tricky to reattach again. Unless, y’know, you’re going for the Raggedy Ann look.MPj02893000000[1].jpg

Beware of the shrink: My particular failing is taking dresses up when I’ve only just bought them, then putting them in the wash to find they shrink to indecent proportions. After a few years of attempting to stretch out doll-sized clothes with an iron, I’ve learned: wash first, sew after.

Don’t get precious: If you go the whole hog and get an overlocker, good for you. But otherwise, don’t stress out over finishing your inside seams. Nobody’s going to see them (or nobody who’s looking at the craftsmanship, anyway…).

Pin, pin, pin: It’s easy to get impatient and jump straight in with the machine. But relying on guesswork is a recipe for disaster – if you have time, it pays to pin, try it on, tack (loose hand stitches), try it on again and then sew. I have ruined more dresses than I’d care to admit by being slapdash (let’s not mention the one I tried to sew while I was wearing it).

Viva la vintage: A lot of people shy away from vintage shopping because, appealing though the garments are on the hanger, they just don’t quite fit right (lots of people shy away because of the smell. I can’t help with that.). But learning your way around a needle and thread can open up a whole new realm of shopping – love the fabric but hate the shape? Want to wear that maxi as a mini? Start small with things that only need a little tweaking, then progress to full-scale overhauls. The best bit: when someone asks where you got it, you have the most irritating answer in the book… “Oh this old thing? It’s vintage, but I altered it myself.” Translation: “You can’t buy one. Nur nur.”

Show shoulder pads some love: One of the easiest ways to revamp a lacklustre garment is by adding or removing these babies. In vintage dresses and jackets they’re usually fairly easy to cut out, bringing the garment forward several decades in a few seconds – just find the three stitch points and carefully snip loose. Then save them to sew into tops that need a little oomph (or put them down your bra for a low budget chicken fillet effect).

It doesn’t have to mean forever: As Sinatra once sang, a lady is allowed to change her mind. And so is a seamstress. If you forgo the machine and stick to loose hand-stitching and big hems, you can change up your clothes to suit your mood and your outfit. Take up skirts to wear mini with tights in winter, then take them down again in summer when your legs see the light. I have a jacket that gets longer or shorter week on week, according to what I’m wearing underneath it. It’s like a fabric-based outlet for your pre-menstrual mood swings. Just stay away from the scissors.

Fashion Face-Off: American outfits, Lady Gaga VS Beyonce in Telephone Video

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2010

Lady G and B.JPG

There’s enough fashion content in Beyonce’s and Lady Gaga‘s Telephone video to start an alternative fashion week. We’ve seen PVC, pirate hats, chains and head pieces galore as well as a range of undies and costumes.

However one scene that really sticks out is the one towards the end when Beyonce and Lady G take to the stage, or in this case Diner floor, in American style outfits. And we’ve decided to put the talented singers up against each other to see who carries it off the best.

Vote below and let us know.

Kate Moss and William Tempest team up to raise money for Sport Relief

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2010

Kate Moss Sport relief.jpg

This Friday Sport Relief will be hitting our BBC TV screens (get the tissues ready), and we can expect to see a range of celebrities doing, well, sporty things, in a bid to raise money to save children from Malaria in developing countries.

However, if you’re Kate Moss, and sports aren’t your thing then what else can you do to help the cause? Model of course.

The supermodel has teamed up with William Tempest who has designed a dress made from recycled mosquito nets, which Kate will model in a bid to get it auctioned off.

Kate said: “I was shocked to hear that one child dies from malaria every 30 seconds.

“The dress incorporates recycled malaria nets and is absolutely gorgeous, I loved wearing it and it’s a great way to raise awareness.”

If you want to help this worthy cause but don’t fancy bidding on the frock, then watch the show on Friday and call in to make donations. Just £5 can help save a child’s life.

Gallery: Lady Gaga’s top ten outrageous outfits

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2010

Let’s face it, there is nothing normal about Lady Gaga.

She’s got the quirkiest style going and an amazing voice to top it off. And it seems everyone is just as in awe as we are with her.

Far from shying away from the singer‘s funky fashion sense, designers such as Armani, Viktor & Rolf and of course, the late Alexander McQueen, have lined up to create outfits for this style icon. And they’ve also dressed her to perfection in terms of her style.

We’ve decided to put together a gallery of Ms G’s most outrageous outfits to show how wacky she is. Let us know your favourite one by leaving your comments below.

Karl Lagerfeld has a salad named after him

By Andrea Petrou on March 16th, 2010

Karl.jpg

Anyone who said food isn’t fashionable should think again, because as well as creating clothes, designers are lending their names to their favourite foods.

The latest talent to do this is Karl Lagerfeld who has loaned his name to one of his favorite salads.

A restaurant spokesman told WWD that the designer gave his blessing for an Alaskan king crab salad served in Jean-Roch’s new La Gioia restaurant in Paris to be named after him.

Lagerfeld always orders the dish, now called the “Insalata Karl Lagerfeld”, which is said to include extra virgin olive oil from Sicily, black pepper, bread crusts, sea salt and a squeeze of lemon juice, when he eats at Roch’s sister La Gioia eatery in Saint-Tropez.

But Mr Lagerfeld isn’t the first to be honoured with a food title. Sonia Rykiel also has a club sandwich, “Le Club Rykiel,” named after her at Paris’ Café de Flore.

Wonder if we can have a Chanel coke with those too?

Gallery: Retro summer dresses

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

Hurrah, the snow has melted and the sun is shining, meaning that we’re finally at the beginning of spring. It may still be slightly too cold to think about bearing your legs, and arms at that, but we have a feeling the summer is going to be a hot one.

We’ve therefore decided to celebrate by putting together a gallery of retro summer dresses, for when that temperature hits the late double figures.

Retro prints are going to be huge this year, and were displayed by a number of designers at their SS2010 catwalk shows back in September.

They’ve also made a huge comeback in the past few years thanks to vintage styles and thrift shopping becoming a popular past time for fashionistas. So if you don’t see anything you like in our gallery (of course we’re sure you will) then head to your nearest charity shop or vintage store for the real retro thing.

Front Row Style: Which fashion capital wears it best?

By laurenbravo on March 15th, 2010

wenn5356916.jpgSo, the calendar’s four main fashion weeks are wrapped up for another season.

Autumn Winter 2010 has been an exciting run of collections, and while we’ve been watching intently to spot our favourite upcoming trends, we’ve got to admit our attention hasn’t always been on the designers. At times we’ve had half an eye on the catwalk, and half an eye on that all-important hot seat of style, the front row.

Yes, sometimes the outfits in the audience can be just as compelling as the clothes on the runway (and a darn sight more wearable too). The star quality of their front row has become an unofficial measure of a designer’s up-and-comingness, with magazines playing Spot the Celeb and numerous show late to start because one key attendee is yet to arrive – Grace Coddington reportedly walked in so late at Valentino that she was greeted by a chorus of boos from waiting photographers. Tsk tsk.

There’s also plenty of gossip potential to be had in the seating arrangements, as movie stars and aristocrats bump knees with artists, editors, politicians and trustfund tweenies. We see the pictures and like to imagine the conversations – do Samantha Cameron and Pixie Geldof swap recipes over their Vitamin Waters? When did Beth Ditto and Bella Freud become mates? Just what were Jennifer Saunders and Melanie Blatt discussing at Betty Jackson? An All Saints/Ab Fab team-up? Oh, the intrigue. Oh, the possibilities.

wenn2747535.jpgAnd oh, oh, the clothes. Front rowers are an endless source of outfit inspiration, particularly useful when they act as translation guides for some of the looks coming down the catwalk. We’d still be lost as to how to work double denim if it wasn’t for Alexa Chung‘s tireless tuition (mix stonewash with indigo, and voluminous shirts with skintight jeggings to avoid looking too much like a Van Halen tribute band on a dress down Friday). Meanwhile, Christopher Kane’s floral leather dresses just make so much more sense when you can scan from the models to the benches and picture the whole look on Emma Watson.

Crucially, those front row photos are also important for demonstrating the cultural variations in the season’s dressing. Or, to speak in snappy alliteration: Who Wore What, Where? Because while the same faces might pop up in every capital (that means you, Ms Chung), each city has its own defining look.

Here’s our ShinyStyle lesson in fashion geography – pay attention, you may be tested on this next season:

London“Anarchy in the UK”

The look: We’re known for our scruffy breed of dressed-down glam, and this year the Brit pack didn’t disappoint. Think visible roots in tousled hair, hulking statement shoes, lots of black, metallics, and a typically eclectic mix of leather, denim, lycra and lace.

The key outfit: Biker jacket, minidress, lame leggings and platforms, accessorised with a scarlet scowl.

The front-row faces: Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof, Daisy Lowe, Mischa Barton, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

The secret weapon: Baptiste dry shampoo, for hair that says, “I haven’t been home” (buy it here).

Paris“Chirpy shirty chic chic”

The look: Gorgeous Gaelic nonchalance as only the French can do it (though the rest of us can try). Lots of crisp white tailoring and utility styles, with statement coats and long, glossy manes.

The key outfit: Cropped, slim-fit cargo pants, the perfect white t-shirt, fitted boyfriend blazer and classic stilettos, with a little furry something to keep out le chill.

The front-row faces: Vanessa Paradis, Lou Doillon Leigh Lezark, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

The secret weapon: Vanish stain remover, to keep those shirts whiter-than-white (spillages are très Anglaise).

Milan“La Dolce Vita, baby”

The look: Va-va-voom Italian insouciance, with animal prints, metallics, shots of vibrant colour and big, big hair. Belissima.

The key outfit: A cocktail dress in a sumptuous colour, leopard print coat, spindly heels, killer clutch and sunglasses.

The front row faces: Margherita Missoni, Lindsay Lohan, Zoe Saldana, Rachel Zoe.

The secret weapon: Lipstick. The bolder the better, preferably in a coral hue as a nod to the summer’s beachy palette – check out these.

New York“XOXO, Front Row…”

The look: Gossip Girl grows up. Impossibly glossy and impeccably groomed, with all emphasis on mixing textures and fabrics, with understated shapes and statement accessories.

The key outfit:
Tulip skirt in a scrunch fabric, teamed with suede ankle boots, a silk blouse, a cropped jacket and a blowdry.

The front row faces: Olivia Palermo, Taylor Momsen, Whitney Port, the Olsen twins.

The secret weapon: Nail varnish in a fudgey colour, for on-trend Upper East Side talons. Find your perfect shade here.

Which fashion capital do YOU think had the style edge? Leave us your comments below.

Gisele Bündchen launches eco-friendly skincare line

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

gisele_bundchen.jpg

We all dream of model clear skin (obviously the one without the airbrushing) and now, there may be a teeny tiny chance that we might get our wish.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen has launched her first skincare line, Sejaa Pure Skincare, which is said to be completely eco-friendly.

It will use ‘all-natural ingredients, thoughtful packaging and recycled paper.’

We think this is a great launch into a different side of the fashion and beauty for the model who became a mum last year. But fans of Gisele needn’t worry, she won’t be hanging up her catwalk shoes just yet. This year seems to be a big one for her.

Who designed Lady Gaga’s and Beyonce’s clothes for the Telephone Video?

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

lady G telephone.jpg

On Friday we gave you a sneaky look at Lady Gaga’s and Beyonce’s Telephone video, and we’re sure you’ll agree it was a very welcome Friday treat. And now we’ve got a bit more of an update for you and that’s who designed the crazy ladies outfits.

Lady Gaga, who is no stranger to the delights of designer fashion and in the past has been dressed by Armani and the late Alexander McQueen opted for Viktor & Rolf this time.
According to Vogue.com the designers custom made her dark grey leopard jersey jumpsuit complete with bodice and chains.

Viktor & Rolf said: “Lady Gaga asked us to design a prisoner’s outfit.

“This is how we imagined Gaga if she was incarcerated. She inspired us and her bodysuit was included in our brand new “glamour factory” collection. It is styled with a huge pile of exaggerated metal chain necklaces.”

However the two ladies didn’t just stick to one designer for the shoot. As well as Viktor & Rolf, the two ladies wore Jean Charles de Castelbajac designs. Beyoncé choose a blue jacket from the spring/summer 2010 collection and Lady Gaga of course went for a bespoke dress.

We see another fashion face off coming on very soon……..

Miss Sixty launches iPhone App

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

Miss Sixty iPhone App.jpg

We usually leave the gadget and app stuff in the capable hands of the girl’s at ShinyShiny. However, we felt a little bit of an exception coming on when we heard about the new Miss Sixty iPhone App.

Girls who love their designer, and dare we say, well fitting denim, will love this app, which gives iPhone and iPod Touch users previews of the new collections, including tops, shoes and dresses as well as denim.

Also available is video content of different ranges and catwalk shows. Those who are looking for something special can also view the what’s hot section and looks of the month as well as browsing to see what’s in store at that current time.

And if, like us, you have to have to have something the minute you see it, then there’s also a handy little store finder. Oh dear we see trouble ahead.

Fashion Face-Off: Red dress rivals Eva Longoria Parker VS Sarah Harding at the Noble Gift Gala

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

Face off sarahsmall.jpg

We bet Eva Longoria Parker thought she’d be the only lady in red when she hosted the Noble Gift Gala in a Ralph and Russo frock last night.

However she must have been slightly mortified when Sarah Harding turned up in a not so different off the shoulder frock in the same shade (hands up who’s had that happen at a party before).

We’re not too sure where Sarah’s frock is from – it’s still a bit too early for her management to be up – and we’re also not quite decided who carries off the red asymmetrical look best.

So we’ve decided to enlist your help here. Vote below and let us know who rocked it best in red last night.

Event: Stars sparkle at the Noble Gift Gala

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

We love celebrity fuelled events, especially when they are in aid of charity.

And last’s night’s Noble Gift Gala, which was hosted by esperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was just one.

Held at the Dorchester, the event was put on to raise awareness for the good work carried out by so many charitable organisations, including the Make a Wish Foundation that helps ill children do some of the things they most want in life.

And of course an event wouldn’t be complete without a celebrity red carpet parade.

Sarah Harding, Jerry Hall who opted for a slinky black number as well as Olivia Lee, who kept to the sequin trend sported by many last night, all came out to show their support for this charitable event.

View the gallery below and let us know who you think was the best dresed.

Donna Karen wants shops to change what they stock according to seasons

By Andrea Petrou on March 15th, 2010

Donna Karen wwd.jpg

It’s happened to the best of us. We’ve walked into a store in the middle of the summer to get ourselves kited out with a new bikini for our summer holiday, only to find we’re too late and the shelves are already stacked with cosy looking jackets for the winter.

They may look lovely, but let’s face it, that parka is not going to be any use to us on a beach, unless of course you have very poor circulation.

And guess what, we’re not the only ones that get frustrated about it.

Designer Donna Karan is fighting to get the system changed. “I hate to say it, somebody’s got to take the leap of faith and deal with the June, July market,” she told WWD. “Pre-fall shouldn’t exist, I’m sorry. Wrong. Let’s start there. We’ve got to bring clothes into season.” Donna has said she wants clothes, especially winterwear, to hit shelves when, well, it’s actually cold.

We can see Donna’s point, and completely agree that it’s a bit of a nightmare finding fashions to suit seasons when the shops are one step ahead. We’re sure were not the only ones who struggled to get excited about the pretty floral short sleeved tops when it was snowing back in early Februar, but will doing this change the whole fashion ethos and catwalk shows as we know them?

Let us know what you think by leaving your comments below.

Friday fashion fracas: Jennifer Aniston VS Angelina Jolie

By Andrea Petrou on March 12th, 2010

Celebrities are well known for trying to out do each other in the style stakes, with many dressing up to the nines at events in a bid to look better than the rest. However, it’s not just what you look like on the red carpet but also your everyday style that makes you a fashion star.

So every Friday we’ll be grabbing two celebs and putting them into the fashion ring, where we’ll analyse each one, their style and what other people say about them to bring you a winner.

But we’ll also be asking for your help too. We want you to vote and let us know who think wins every week too.

Jennifer Aniston.
Jennifer Aniston is usually seen in casual outfits, think jeans and on-trend tops, unless she’s attending a film premier, where she’ll often opt for a classic black long dress by designer Valentino. Her “Rachel” haircut in Friends also caused many women to chop off their locks in a bid to copy the style in 1995.

In 2006 Jen won an online award for US People’s Magazine “The Best Dressed star in Hollywood,” where she beat off competition from Halle Berry, with Jessica Alba as a result of her laid back style of jeans and T-shirts and blazers. Many people also voted her their favourite as they felt she was one person they could dress like.

Worst outfit.

Her black dress complete with a slit and plunging neckline at this year’s Golden Globes, was compared by some critics to a frock worn by Jen’s ex husband’s wife Angelina Jolie. We hope it was more a coincidence than a copycat look. Despite her hair been a much talked about subject Jen also showed that even the best of us can have a bad hair day turning up to the Emmy Awards in 1999 with wild-child faux dreads.

What others say: Fashion magazine NZGirl says: “Jennifer’s fashion style is very understated – you’ll never spot her in a fluorescent pink halter-top. She prefers natural colours and fabrics and loves wearing comfortable clothes like jeans, long skirts and tank tops.”

Angelina Jolie

Angelina may have stolen Jennifer’s man but can she steal her style crown too? We can’t deny Ange is one of the most gorgeous women to have graced our screens over the past few decades and let’s face it not many men will disagree. However her style is often somewhat pickled. Unlike Jen, Ange doesn’t do classic on an everyday scale. It’s usually black, gothic and in the past, before the children, very revealing. You’re more likely to catch her in a skirt or figure hugging dress rather than jeans. And her past red carpet style has been the same. She turned up to the Oscars twice in a row wearing gothic black, and of course that black dress with the split, which Jen, was claimed to have copied. However over recently her red carpet style has changed and we’ve seen her looking stunning in sparkles and delicate designs. One outfit that really sticks out is the canary yellow Ungaro couture frock she wore for the 2007 premiere of Ocean’s Thirteen.

Worst outfit

Before we begin here, we think it’s only fair to mention Ange’s worst fashion moment, which in our opinion was getting sacked as the face of fashion brand St Johns. The actress who had fronted campaigns for the company since 2005 was sacked late last year after bosses claimed she was too hard to work with. So has she made any mistakes on the red carpet. Many. Now we think it may be a little bit unfair to go right back but we can’t forget her first Oscar appearance when she was aged ten (1986) and chose to walk the red carpet in what looked like a mini bridesmaid dress. Her Elvira looking dress at the 2000 Oscars, complete with Ange’s black hair was also not a fashion experience we care to remember.

What others say: Vogue.com said: “Since her powerful pairing with Brad Pitt in 2005, Jolie has become the highest-earning actress in the world. Her style has gradually become more glamour-oriented while her role as a mother-of-six has seen it soften. Red carpet outfits include gowns from Versace, Armani Privé and Max Azria.”

Our verdict?
We have to admit, it was a bit of a tough one. After all Jen is classically stylish, while Ange wows on the red carpet. But we’ve decided that the celeb that wins this Friday’s fight is Jen. Her classic styles make us all feel as though we can look as good as a celeb and makes us feel as though walking around in jeans and blazers, during the day are perfectly fine. Ange, we love your leather looks, but a trip shopping in those may leave us feeling like Ross in that episode of Friends. We need the talc just thinking about it.

Tell us who you think wins bu voting below. And if you can’t quite make up your mind view our gallery for some photographic inspiration.
