Dr.Martens celebrates 50th anniversary by offering 1460 eight hole boots for £14.60

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2010

Pink DM boots £80 Asos.jpg

Yesterday we paid a tribute to Dr Martens which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary tomorrow, by putting together a gallery of on-trend boots and also a round-up of celebrity fans.
And now it seems the brand wants to give something back to its loyal shoppers.

Tomorrow it’s giving you the opportunity to snap up a pair of its most famous 1460, eight-hole boots – the first boots ever to be sold back on 1st April 1960 for a bargain £14.60.

The boots, which will be on sale at the DM flagship store in Covent Garden are available in 5 colours, but you’d better get there quick as we don’t think they’ll hang around for too long.

Gallery: Celebrity tattoos do you like them or loathe them?

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2010

We had a few comments coming through to our inboxes and over Twitter about Peaches Geldof’s tattoos yesterday. Some of you thought they were creative, while others weren’t too keen.

However over the past few decades these pieces of body art have moved away from the stereotypical “Brits on tour” and “punk” ideals into the world of fashion with celebrities such as Posh, Rihanna and Pink all using these to make a huge statement.

They’ve also become a big must have for this season with Chanel creating transfer tattoos as a replacement for those of us too scared to get a real one but who want to keep in with the latest trends.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of our favourite celebrity tattoos but keep clicking through because we’ve also put in a little surprise for all you David Beckham fans.

And as always let us know what you think about tattoos by voting and leaving your comments below.

Bicester Village launches up and coming Brit designer pop-up shop

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2010

bicester-village.jpg

Wednesday is usually a bad day for many of us.

You’ve got through Monday and Tuesday, yet the weekend still seems so far away.

However this week is different and we’ve already got that Thursday feeling since tomorrow is technically Friday in working terms.

In fact we’re so excited about the long Easter break that we’ve been planning what to do already and one place we’ve decided is a must have for fashion fans to visit this weekend is Bicester Village.

The discount shopping centre, which houses brands such as Anya Hindmarch and Alexander McQueen, at discounted pieces, has teamed up with the British Fashion Council and launched a pop-up store for some of Britain’s hottest young designers.

This means you’ll be able to browse rails of clothing from designers such as Erdem and Mark Fast, which are said to be discounted up to 50%.

We’re getting our purses and raring to go and we suggest you do the same this weekend as the pop-up store will only hand around until 7th May.

Psst: Is Lady Gaga writing and performing the next James Bond theme tune?

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2010

Thumbnail image for Lady Gaga Hat

Is there anything Lady Gaga can’t do? It seems not. Not only has the quirky style queen won our fashion hearts but it also seems her music kudos is going up to.

According to The Sun, Miss G has been asked to write and sing the theme for the next James Bond film starring the lovely Daniel Craig.

A source revealed to The Sun: “Bond bosses are all huge Gaga fans. Her sound and sense of drama make her the top choice.

“Gaga has the look as well as the voice to tackle a thundering ballad. She’s a great songwriter too. This is perfect on every level.”

If the rumours are to be believed Miss G will join the likes of Shirley Bassey and her style rival Madonna, who have both previously sang the theme tune for a 007 film.

We can’t wait to see the video.

Madonna claims daughter Lourdes is the designing brains behind her clothing range

By Andrea Petrou on March 31st, 2010

madonna.jpg

Madonna is not one to shy away from work, but it seems her clothing line might not be as straight forward as she originally planned.

The pop queen has told reporters that it is in fact her daughter Lourdes who will be doing most of the designing the Junior inspired range for Macys.

She told reporters: “If Lola wasn’t so completely involved in the line, designing, consulting, whatever you want to call it, I wouldn’t do it. Really she does most of the work, honestly.

“The most fun is when [Lourdes] comes into the room and takes over and pulls out all of her favourite stuff and starts going through the racks and just takes over,” Madonna said.

“I just sit on the conference table and watch and let her do the work — it’s nice, it’s refreshing.”

However, she doesn’t seem ready to let the 14 year old bask in the spotlight just yet.
When she was asked why her daughter wasn’t at any of the promotional events Madonna replied: “That is why I am here talking about the line and she is not. Eventually I will let her. I feel like she needs to get into high school and focus on her studies, her lessons. She got into the high school of the performing arts. She has a lot of work to do.

“I don’t want her to be distracted. She will eventually be able to talk about it. I am going to be happy when she does because she can speak much more clearly in and in a more informed way than I can about a line she is ultimately designing.”

We er look forward to seeing Lourdes designs then.

The top 5 unlikely style icons for 2010

By laurenbravo on March 30th, 2010

wenn5364628.jpg Style inspiration can come from some unusual places. Copying catwalk looks is all very well, but we reckon this season you’ll be looking to a few less obvious heroines (and heroes) for fashion pointers…

Emma Pillsbury, Glee

Where do we start with our new favourite guidance counsellor? Miss Pillsbury’s breed of pretty and prim secretary chic makes us want to sing with joy – think pussy-bows, puffed sleeves, brooches and pencil skirts, everything in vivid crayon colours and offset by that perfectly-flicked ginger coiffure.

Hers is a clever look, falling in a sexy middle ground somewhere between dolly and granny. They key is uber-neatness – have fun with colours and accessories, but keep shapes precise and tailored to fit you beautifully. For catwalk inspiration, look to Louis Vuitton and Prada, who showed an array of refined and ladylike looks.
Meanwhile, a floral pussy-bow blouse like this one from ASOS is the quickest way to inject some Pillsbury-style prim into your wardrobe. Well, if it helped her get Mr Schuester (eventually), then it’s good enough for us…

Molly Ringwald

John Hughes’ 80s classic Pretty in Pink has long been one of ringwald.jpgour favourite squealalong movies. It has all the crucial ingredients – high school, prom, dashing romantic hero with like, his own car, and a nice line in teen witticisms. Meanwhile, Ringwald is divine as its new wave heroine Andie Walsh, a gawky Cinderella we can all identify with.

But it’s only in recent months that we’ve really started to appreciate her wardrobe. It’s Grade A eccentric but still pretty as a picture, with high emphasis on lace, pastels, natty hats and customising. One of the best scenes has to be Andie making her own prom outfit from an old pink bridesmaid’s dress, which has inspired us to get a bit scissor-happy on more than one occasion (if not always with quite such chic results). Also check out her outfits in other John Hughes offerings Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club (where she sports a particularly great leather-jacket-and-cropped-t-shirt combo).

The most obvious port of call when shopping for Molly’s look are vintage stores and charity shops, but there are also some very Andie-esque items to be found on the high street. Urban Outfitters has always specialised in misfit chic, and they come up trumps with this fabulous lace-collar dress. Team with woolly socks and lace gloves. Now all you need to do is choose between Duckie and Blaine…

tmpphpazlYkI.jpgThe Mad Hatter

So Alice might be the obvious point of reference here, but there was another style contender at that tea party, and rumour has it he got 10% off… Yes, for an antidote to all the frou frou petticoats and headbands, take a few tips from the man in the hat.

This is last season’s boyfriend-borrowed chic taken to the next level; part Victorian gent, part late 60s dandy. Think Annie Hall Through the Looking Glass, with blazers, mannish shirts, fingerless gloves and dapper bow-ties in rich colours and prints.

The key to this look is texture. Pile on tweeds, silks, paisley prints and velvet with flashes of metallics for a look that stops just short of the neighbourhood crazy lady. Check out Anna Sui’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection for ways to get it right, and start off your own wonderland wardrobe with some gentleman’s brogues like these lovelies from Office.

(image: victorianweb.org)
DORIS DAY.jpgDoris Day

When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, ‘what will I be? Will I be pretty, will I be rich… will I be able to pull off fringed leather with some hotpants and red lippie?’ Yes, the goodie-goodie queen of 50s cinema is an unlikely hero in today’s edgy fashion climate, but for those of us who want to clean up our image for summer, she’s a great example of how to do preppy with pep.

A clean-cut mix of tomboyish shapes and sugar-and-spice colourways, ‘good girl’ chic was a strong catwalk presence at the Spring/Summer 2010 shows, like a palatte-cleansing sorbet amid all the chaotic prints and flounce. Look to Luella for colours and shapes straight out of Pillow Talk, and Lacoste (who else?) for tennis wear that will look as good in a bar as it does on the courts.

Think tailored capri pants, cut to the ankle and worn with jazz shoes or plimsolls. Or go for thigh-bearing, high-waisted shorts like these from Topshop with a tight cashmere sweater in a candy shade.

Keep a smile on your face, a spring in your step and a twinkle in your eye that lets everyone know you’re not as innocent as your outfit might suggest… And if it all gets a bit too saccharine, you can always try channelling Calamity Jane with some dirty fringed lather and a bootlace tie. Yee-ha.

Yourself, circa 1993

That’s right darling, you’re a fashion icon. Cast your mind back 17 years and mentally raid your old wardrobe. Mine consisted largely of little skirts with floral cycling shorts attached underneath, bum bags, stonewashed denim jackets and jelly shoes. The skirt/shorts were particularly useful because it meant you could do cartwheels in the garden without the boys from next door seeing your knickers, a crucial advantage in the social life of a five year old.

If you were a little (or a lot) older, you probably had a myriad of big white motif t-shirts, chunky oversized cardigans, high-top trainers and denim shirts stolen from your boyfriend/brother/Dad. All of these wonderful references and more will be back to haunt us this year, so it’s time to start flicking fondly through the old photo albums. If you belonged to a nudist colony during the early nineties or, oh horror, weren’t actually born, look to the following to see how it was done: Blossom; Claire Danes in My So-Called Life; Clarissa Explains it All, Kelly Kapowski in Saved By the Bell.

TwentyTwelve, Preen and Marc Jacobs have all sent grungey ’90s looks down the runway recently, while there’s plenty of denim, lyrcra, lace and faded florals to be had on the high street. Start off with some cycling shorts, put a lacy dress this one from New Look on top, a cropped top on top of that, and finish off with a denim shirt and some mismatched jewellery. Then put on Rhythm Is A Dancer and do a cartwheel on the lawn.

Cat Deeley becomes the new face for Links of London

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Cat Links.jpg

It may be bad news for Peaches Geldof who has lost her Miss Ultimo contract but other Brit stars are continuing in their quest to front advertising campaigns.

One such Brit that’s done this and succeeded is Cat Deeley who has just been announced as the new face of jewellery brand Links of London.

We have to confess we’re over the moon about this, especially since we’ve been big fans of her style for very long time now.

Although there haven’t been many pictures released we’ve managed to get our hands on one of the shots, but we’ll all have to wait until the autumn for the rest.

Rachel Bilson claims she doesn’t use a stylist

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Rachel b.jpg

We’ve all had a touch of the green eyed monster at one point or the other, where we’ve looked at a celeb and thought “I could look like that if I had her make-up artist,” or “If I had her stylist I’d be just as well dressed.”

However, one celeb we won’t be able to use the stylist justification with is Rachel Bilson. The actress has admitted that unlike many of her A-list counter parts she doesn’t use a stylist. Instead she prefers to make her own mistakes and retain some fashion freedom.

She told People Magazine: “I really dress myself.

“I’ve been known to put a necklace in my hair. That’s what getting dressed should be. It’s about fun and experimenting. I think you either enjoy it or you don’t – and I do.”

Well that’s stopped our stylist justification but if we had her make-up artist……

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of celebrities wearing these shoes with various outfits to give you some style inspiration.

Peaches Geldof axed as the face of Miss Ultimo following drug allegations

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Peaches.jpg

The world of modelling is fickle at the best of times but when you’re thrust into the media spotlight for reportedly doing something illegal, it’s game over.

After a series of sordid photos of Peaches Geldof hit the web, and rumours of her heroin use began to circulate, the socialite has been dropped by Ultimo as the face of it’s Miss Ultimo range.

The undewear brand, which reportedly paid Peaches £100,000 for the campaign, said in a statement: “We have been in meetings all morning with regards to the stories that have surfaced over the weekend about Peaches and unfortunately we have no option but to terminate her contract.

“Miss Ultimo is a brand geared towards a young female audience and as a company we have a social responsibility to ensure we are promoting only positive role models that young women can aspire to. We are in the process of removing Peaches from the website and we are working with Debenhams to remove her visuals form all Miss Ultimo shops and window displays throughout the UK.”

Michelle Mone, the creator of the Miss Ultimo brand, added: “We’ve given this a lot of thought, but there’s a point where a business must stick to its principles and as a brand that targets young women, we feel it is impossible for Peaches to continue to work with us as the face of Miss Ultimo lingerie.”

This isn’t the first time a model or celeb has been dropped from a campaign following drug allegations. Kerry Katona was dropped by Iceland following claims of cocaine use, while Kate Moss was also axed from Rimmel when pictures of her snorting the drug became public.

However both ladies have bounced back. Will this be the case for Peaches or has she gone a step too far this time? Let us know what you think by leaving your comments below.

Dr. Martens celebrates 50 year anniversary and we put together a gallery of on-trend DM boots

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Dr. Marten boots have always been associated with rock, workers and punk. However over the past few years they’ve been thrust into the fashion limelight with a range of celebs such as Agyness Deyn wearing these.

The 1st April 2010 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Dr. Martens boot, which was originally designed for workers. To celebrate this the company has asked ten bands/musicians to record their version of cult classics that represent the spirit of Dr. Martens over the past five decades.

The first three will be released on 1st April 2010. They include: Noisettes covering Ever Fallen In Love With Someone You Shouldn’t've, Dam-Funk covering The Things Dreams are Made of and The Duke Spirit covering If The Kids are United.

However we wanted to create our own celebration so we’ve decided to put together a gallery of on-trend Dr. Martens boots, which are perfect for this season.

Macy Gray to re-launch plus size clothing range

By Andrea Petrou on March 30th, 2010

Macy grey.jpg

Plus size models and clothing have become a huge trend over the past few seasons. Curvy models have graced the catwalk (thanks Marc Jacobs), had an issue of V Magazine dedicated to them and stores have also created more plus size collections.

Macy Gray is the latest lady to jump on this season’s plus size bandwagon. According to WWD, the singer is set to relaunch her plus size line, which goes by the name of Humps, next year.

The range, which she launched in 2008, didn’t really take off when it hit the shelves but apparently Ms Gray has been “re-inspired”.

We can’t wait to see what this new bout of inspiration brings.

Kelly for Ultimo.jpg

While some celebrities are creating teaser campaigns for charity, Kelly Brook is flashing her undies for Ultimo.

The former page three girl, who is no stranger to underwear modelling having created and modelled her own range for New Look, follows in the footsteps on Peaches Geldof who fronted the brand last season, and Mel B, Helena Christensen, Rachel Hunter, Sarah Harding and Melinda Messenger who have all been previous Ultimo models.

Ultimo creator Michelle Mone OBE told The Daily Mail: “Kelly is a natural beauty and is effortlessly sexy, making her the perfect choice for Ultimo. She epitomises the Ultimo woman and looks incredible in our new designs.”

And Kelly is equally delighted at being the new face of the brand.

“I’m really delighted to be fronting Ultimo’s new campaign. Working with Ultimo and photographer Simon Emmett was great and I think the end results look fantastic,” she said.

“There is something incredibly sensual about Ultimo lingerie; I find that it always makes me feel confident and sexy, knowing I’ve got something beautiful on underneath my clothes.

“Ultimo is one of the UK’s biggest lingerie brands, so I’ve always been aware of their product and high-profile campaigns. They’ve had so many gorgeous women model for them over the years so it was really flattering to be asked by Michelle to take over.”
