Gallery: Get the Glee look

By laurenbravo on April 30th, 2010

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last few months, you will know Glee. You might hate it. You might love it. You might be a bonafide, t-shirt-wearing, Streisand-singing Gleek. But wherever your feelings lie, it’s pretty hard to ignore the impact that the implausibly hot high schoolers have had on the world of entertainment.

While the all-singing, all-dancing troup are about as edgy as a satsuma, they do deliver in spades something that the fashion world loves: camp. With cheerleader outfits, Madonna tributes, knee socks, pussy bows and bling among the treasures in their dressing up box, we nominate New Directions as this month’s fashion inspiration.

So whether you fancy channelling Rachel’s preppy, Miss Pillsbury’s prim or Mercedes’ megawatt diva, these looks will get you through sectionals in style…

Sex and The City cast told to keep quiet about SATC2 film

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

SJP SATC2.jpg
We’ve all spilled the beans on something we shouldn’t have but imagine having to pay a financial sum for saying things you shouldn’t. Well that’s what’s happening to the girls in Sex and the City.

According to the Daily Mail the crew have had to sign a confidentiality agreement. And anyone found spilling the beans on the long awaited SATC2 film will have to pay up to £1.6 million if details are leaked.

The contractual agreement has apparently been drawn up as it is believed a large part of the first films great success was due the mystery of the storyline, which told what had happened to the main characters since the end of the television series in 2004.

Kim Cattrall has already come close to paying out after being photographed holding the script, with some dialogue visible. “I thought: “You have got to be kidding! This isn’t state secrets, it’s the f****** script for a movie!” It’s crazy. You really have to be careful because I’ve signed my life away to say I won’t tell. It gets to the point where you’re terrified to carry your script around in case someone catches a glimpse of it,” said Cattrall.

Sometimes silence really is golden.

Is Victoria Beckham designing Beyonce’s next tour outfits?

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Victoria Beckham
Psst…Could Victoria Beckham be designing a range for Beyonce? If the rumour mill is anything to go by then the answer is yes.

According to The Mirror Posh has been enlisted by the superstar to create outfits for her next tour. However, instead of the outrageous designs she usually wears, she’s apparently asked for full length and elegant.

If this is true then Posh should be extremely proud. Beyonce is known for her stunning show outfits and in the past has used high profile designers such as Herve Leger, Versace and Armani. And with this in mind it’s clear Vicks is really making a name for herself in the fashion industry.

SS2010 Trend alert: Maxi dress madness

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Forget micro mini’s and just above the knee and go for a long dress this summer. Maxi dresses are absolutely huge this season with a massive number of designers such as Sass and Bide, Stella MCcartney, Pringle of Scotland and Topshop Unique all pushing this trend at their SS2010 shows.

Not only do these frocks give a nod to the boho trend that’s making a comeback this season but they are also incredibly versatile. Team up with flip flops or gladiator sandals and wear to the beach, to a summer BBQ or to a festival or go smart with heels for a cocktail party or sophisticated night on the town.

You can also dress your frock up or down with a piece of statement jewellery (think chunky beads for a tribal look) or delicate chains for the evening.

We’ve put together a gallery of the best highstreet maxi dresses out there.

Friday fun: Lady Gaga finger puppets

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Lady gaga finger puppet.jpg

Want to have Lady Gaga wrapped around your finger? Or would you prefer her under your thumb? If the answer to any of these is yes, then you’re in luck.

A clever designer, Mullish Muse, over at craft and designer auction site Etsy has created a range of finger puppets based on celebrities and there’s one of Miss G to be had. We love these tiny felt dolls, which really are a fantastic likeness to the kooky singer, considering how small they are.

And if you don’t want the Lady then there are also a range of other puppets including Bono and fashion icons Anna Wintour, Vivienne Westwood and Coco Chanel. Put them together and have a mini puppet celebrity party.

We wonder what Anna Wintour would say about Lady Gaga’s style though?

Katie Holmes to play Jackie Kennedy in new series for The History Channel

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Katie Holmes shows off the bob haircut
Katie Holmes has stepped away from the spotlight recently, concentrating on her daughter Suri rather than her acting. However it seems all of that is going to change, and what better way to re-start an acting career than playing the glamourous Jacqueline Kennedy.

The star married to Tom Cruise has been tapped to play the famous lady in the History Channel‘s new series The Kennedys alongside Greg Kinnear who will be taking the role of President John F. Kennedy Jr.

The 8 hour series will come out sometime next year and frankly we can’t think of anyone else who would be better placed to play the role. Her cropped hairstyle and classic dress sense is a perfect match to Jackies’.

Do you think Katie makes a good Jackie O? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

ShinyStyle watch: Scarlett Johansson for D&G make-up

By Andrea Petrou on April 30th, 2010

Scarlett make up D&G.jpg
It was only yesterday that we featured Scarlett Johansson in our models versus celebrity face-off after some designers said they would go back to using models over A-List stars in their campaigns.

However, we think perhaps we were a little bit too hasty to agree because Scarlett looks amazing in this latest campaign for Dolce & Gabbana Makeup campaign.

The star looks every inch the 50s chick with her Marilyn Monroe curls and we love the blue metallic shade she wears on her eyes. And she’s proved she’s most definitely a muse for the brand. D&G have named a colour in their Roses Lipstick collection Scarlett.

She said of the campaign: “I try to be inspired by old Hollywood glamour, whether that’s Rita Hayworth or Lauren Bacall.”
Watch behind the scenes footage and see what else Scarlett has to say about the campaign by viewing the video below.

Fashion Face Off: Kristen Stewart Vs Ashley Greene

By Andrea Petrou on April 29th, 2010

We’ve had a Twilight themed week here on ShinyStyle with fashion face-offs between Emma Watson and Kristen Stewart and another between R-Patz and Daniel Radcliffe.

Therefore we thought it only right that we carried this on and this time we’ve decided to play two Twilight actresses against each other – Kristen vs Ashley Greene.

The actress who starred alongside Kristen as Alice Cullen in the films auditioned 5 times for a part in the movies, and says she originally auditioned for the part of Bella.

But did she miss out or is Kristen the best actress for the part? And who wins in the fashion stakes. Take a look at our gallery of the stars and their style and vote below to let us know.

Give a nod to the punk trend and support England in the World Cup with these Union Jack tights

By Andrea Petrou on April 29th, 2010

clip_image004.jpg

Love it or loathe it the World Cup will shortly be upon us.

We know many of you who despise the footie won’t be happy about losing your other halves for a while, but why not join in and support England in the fashion stakes instead?

Now we’re not talking football shirts here, although we can be sure various highstreet retailers will be selling many “female” versions of these in the next few weeks, instead we advise you think out of the box.

Mix on-trend tights with a patriotic twist instead with these Union Jack tights from Jonathan Aston. Not only will you stand out from the crowd but you’ll also be giving a nod to Vivienne Westwood punk, and we all know that’s going to be hot this year.

Georgia May Jagger to focus on her studies rather than modelling

By Andrea Petrou on April 29th, 2010

Georgia big.jpg

Models are no longer just pretty faces, they’re also exceptionally bright. Lily Cole has been happily studying at Cambridge for the past few years and Emma Watson (if you count her stint at Burberry as modelling) has shipped herself off to America to continue her studies.

Next to show us her brainy side is Rimmel girl Georgia May Jagger, who, according to Vogue has chosen to focus on her A-Levels, which she’ll be taking in June, over modelling commitments.

Her agent Tori Edwards at TESS, told the magazine: “She’s studying sociology, photography and art, and that’s her only focus right now – especially after being stranded in NY last week, where she was shooting the new Hudson campaign, because of the ash cloud. She is thinking about further studies after she finishes school and wants to do well in her exams.”

Cheryl Cole voted as the world’s sexiest female

By Andrea Petrou on April 29th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Cheryl Cole follicle fakery.jpg

This story won’t really come as a surprise to many of you, especially, if like us, you think Cheryl Cole is stunning.

The troubled singer has just been voted as the world’s World’s Sexiest Woman for the second year in a row in FHM‘s annual poll.

Cheryl beat Jessica Alba, Megan Fox, who came second, and Angelina Jolie, who came a pitiful (no pun intended) 70 on the list, to regain her crown for the title which was voted for by readers of the magazine.

What do you think of the result? Does Cheryl deserve the crown or do you think there are others out there who are better? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Fashion face off: Models vs Celebrities in ad campaigns

By Andrea Petrou on April 29th, 2010

Celebrities are becoming huge in the world of campaigns and not a week goes by when we don’t tell you about a new partnership, from Madge for D&G, Cheryl Cole for Loreal and even Beth Ditto for Evans.

However, just as we thought this was becoming the norm it seems some designers are rebelling against these celebrities. According to WWD a recent report has found designers are going back to their roots choosing models over the latest hottest Hollywood celeb.

Designer Stefano Pilati, who is shooting Yves Saint Laurent‘s campaign, said: “Actresses are fantastic, but they’re not models and it’s not easy.”

“[Actresses] have an attitude, but will never be the fashion attitude. To me, fashion photography is with a model; otherwise, it’s a portrait.”

And his views were echoed by Frida Giannini, the creative director at Gucci, who tapped statuesque Raquel Zimmermann for the Italian brand’s fall-winter spots.

“The other issue with celebrities is that they are characters who are often associated with a certain film. I prefer a strong, generic face that’s not related to any world — whether that be music or Hollywood.”

And Karl Lagerfeld always ensures he uses models for his Chanel campaigns, why? “Because I love them: They have the right look and class,” he said.

We’ve already seen a few brands going back to their model roots. One example is St John, which dumped Angelina Jolie in favour for Karen Elson, last year.

But what do you think? Take a look at our gallery of models and actresses in various campaigns and leave your comments below.

Fashion Translator: your guide to that industry lingo

By laurenbravo on April 28th, 2010

teacher-doris-day1.jpg

Never mind those tricky-to-pronounce French designers – sometimes the fashion world likes to speak a language all of its own. Are you “channelling” a “micro-trend” with those “BIJ” sunnies? Get yourself up to speed with our guide to licking the lingo.

“Micro-trend”

A localised sub-trend, usually one that is only big for a couple of months, or within certain geographical perimeters. Sometimes micro trends will grown into fully-fledged macro trends; sometimes they will disappear as quickly as they came (leaving you with a cupboard full of animal ear headbands and nowhere to wear them). Recent micro trends include Doc Martens, letterman jackets and top knot hairdos.

How to use:
“Damn, I thought bumbags were going to be a macro-trend so I bought 12 of them, but it turns out they were just a micro-trend. So micro it was barely visible to the naked eye.”

“BIJ”

Stop sniggering, it’s not rude. BIJ stands for Big In Japan, which in turn is shorthand for your outfit getting you stopped in the street so that arty Japanese tourists can take your photo. It’s one of the best mood enhancers you can get for free. But beware, being BIJ doesn’t necessarily mean B-everywhere-else – you could just be the photo they tag as their friends on Facebook as a joke.

How to use:
“I wasn’t sure about the post-ironic shellsuit top with these socks and jelly shoes, but it turns out I’m BIJ today. Scooore.”

“Channelling”

There are several reasons that fashion folk use the word channelling so much. One is because it is, to all intents and purposes, another way of saying “copying” that sounds far more admirable and far less like primary school. Another is because it makes getting dressed sound like a form of superhuman act, like channelling the force of some radioactive crystals through our fingertips in order to create a rip in the space-time continuum. It makes it sound important, and fashion folk like feeling important.

How to use: practice correct usage by repeating the term “channelling Chanel” as many times as you can before your tongue dies.

“Sit back”

That’s not an order to relax, but a cover-all term for the dressing down of attention-seeking garments. If you buy a glitzy embellished jacket, for example, you could sit it back with a white vest and some denim cut-offs. Sitting back is a crucial element of modern dressing, allowing you to wear things that wouldn’t look out of place in Danny La Rue’s wardrobe without looking as if you’ve tried too hard. Or at all.

How to use:
“That sequinned matador jacket might be slightly too much for the office, but I can always sit it back with some jeggings and plimsolls.”

“Matchy-matchy”

Some of you might have been bought up in the mistaken belief that matching clothes was a good thing. Not so, we’re afraid. The fash pack use this as a derogatory term for anything overly co-ordinated, in colour, print or theme. Matchy-matchiness occurs most often in those magazine dissections of celebrity outfits, particularly when the culprit is head to toe in monogrammed Vuitton.

How to use: “Co-ordinating her purple eyeshadow with her hat, belt and shoes was a little bit match-matchy for my tastes.”

anniehall.jpg
“Boyfriend”

As a general rule, notwithstanding Vera Wang, the fashion industry doesn’t persecute single women to nearly the same extent as other institutions (TV, film, elderly aunts). But every so often even the staunchly autonomous world of style has a moment of weakness and makes us feel crap for being uncoupled. “Boyfriend” style is one of those moments. Used to make baggy, manly clothes sound appealing, the concept on boyfriend blazers, trousers etc is based on the idea that you might have borrowed them from a man’s wardrobe. What it overlooks, of course, is that if you actually borrowed said items from your boyfriend’s wardrobe, they would be too big on the shoulders, too tight on the hips and smell of feet. Sexy though it might be to wear your man’s shirt while you’re doing the decorating, we’re pretty sure Annie Hall bought all her own clothes. So we can too.

How to use:
“I borrowed my boyfriend blazer from my boyfriend, but then he broke up with me… does that make it just a blazer?”

“Hoxton”

After the hipper-than-thou East London area, Hoxton has now become shorthand for its own particular breed of art-school edgy, particular if worn by a borderline anorexic boychild with asymmetric hair. The difficulty with Hoxton dressing is that, like some kind of quasi-philosophical theory, as soon as something becomes thought of as “Hoxton”, it will immediately stop being worn in Hoxton. Thus most of the time, you’re locating Hoxton style in Camden and Chiswick. As a general rule, once you’re spotting Hoxton in Fulham it no longer qualifies for the term. See also: Shoreditch.

How to use:
“That Barbour jacket and pilot’s moustache are making you look a bit Hoxton today.”

“Conceptual”

All you need to know here is that you will never wear anything described as “conceptual”. You might put it on your coffee table, hang it on your wall or mistake it for a child’s novelty plaything, but you will never wear it. Usually the preserve of a crop of Japanese designers including Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe, conceptual design is what the uninitiated think of when they think of catwalk fashion. Puffer jackets the size of bouncy castles, dresses made from Perspex, hats with trees growing out of them. Sold in Dover Street Market and bought by rich dowager patronesses who will invite people round for tea just to look at it, conceptual is to the fashion world what Victoria Beckham was to the Spice Girls – impressive, decorative, but not strictly necessary.

How to use:
“Is that bin bag a conceptual skirt?” “No, it’s just a bin bag.”

Helena Christensen photographs Daisy Lowe

By Andrea Petrou on April 28th, 2010

Helena and Dasisy.jpg

While some models are turning to acting others such as Janice Dickinson and Tyra Banks are taking a stand behind the camera. One such model to follow in these footsteps is Helena Christensen who has teamed up with Scandinavian brand Odd Molly.

Although this is not the first time the two have teamed up, it’s the first time Helena has had the opportunity to photograph Daisy Lowe for the brand’s latest campaign.

“I was a photographer before I started modelling – so the transition was really the other way around,” Christensen told Vogue.

“I am fascinated by photography, the effect images have on me. Working on both sides of the camera has been some sort of educational experience for me.”

We can’t wait to see the pictures, we’re sure they’ll be gorgeous.

Coroner delivers verdict on Alexander McQueen’s death

By Andrea Petrou on April 28th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Alex.jpg

It’s been a few months since Alexander McQueen’s death, but we know, like us, many people are still saddened by the tragedy.

And today we’ve been reminded of the event as the inquest in to the death of Alexander McQueen has just been closed by the coroner, who confirmed that the designer had “killed himself while the balance of his mind was disturbed”.

Dr Paul Knapman said that McQueen had “a history of depression and anxiety, and was grieving for his mother,” both of which contributed to his death on February 11 this year.

According to WWD the coroner also said he had found a “significant level of cocaine,” sleeping pills, and tranquilisers in the blood samples taken after the designer’s death.
