Fancy a piece of biscuit? Beige clothing gets a revamp

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Beige has always had a rough time. The outcast of the colour family, used synonymously to mean dull, boring and OAP. Never seen for it’s positives, always castigated for what it lacked, colour. As if to prove my point, Thebeigesite.co.uk is a site primarily set up to incite mockery at the old. Under the tab ‘old person fashion’ it is stated “Beige is the most common colour for old peoples clothes although mix and not match is also popular”. To counter this slanderous activity on beige’s fair name, it’s about time we gave it a fair hearing. It seems designers this season agree with me, and beige has been refined, revamped and remodulated… and changed it’s name to biscuit. Three reasons to get involved are all subsumed under the inimitable Parisian style of 60s icons Anna Karina, Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Hardy. If you don’t know them, check them out to see some indisputable stylistic panache. Biscuit can only be worn simply, chicly and with clean lines. She’s a hard mistress, but when adorned correctly, she’s definitely worth it. Check out the gallery below for biscuit ensembles, and where to go for the best biscuit buys this summer.

Mango & Scarlett’s 4th fashion adventure is given a firm thumbs up

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

With summer on our heels, Mango has teemed up with Scarlett Johansson once again to produce the ‘summer light’ collection, now viewable online at www.mango.com. This new collection will get you grasping for the credit card and persuading yourself that these are essential purchases, and the only possible way you will get through the sweltering heat of the English summer. A stark contrast to the dark and vampishly sexy campaign of last season, Scarlett and Mango have enlisted the help of top photographer Mario Sorrenti to produce a campaign that showcases a collection that has something very different to say. Discarding the black leather and leopard print this time round, for pastel shades, and contrasts of simple silhouettes and feminine florals and frills. Not to mention plain pastels and paisley prints. Using a colour palette that clings to the lighter shades of blue, pink, off white and grey, the collection is undeniably summer and light. More importantly, in producing these fluid, soft, voluminous shapes with a country twist, comfort, femininity and style are brewed together into an unmissable concoction. Scarlett’s most versatile beauty leaves her almost unrecognisable in some of the photos, which should be appreciated as beautiful in their own right. Appearing natural with an almost dreamy quality, adds to the overall ethereal image of this seasons romance infused creations. My top items are the white lace dress at £119.90 (which looks like an expensive vintage find you just picked up in Paris last week) and the collection of platforms soon to be walking out of stores near you. If you are more of a flat shoe kind of gal, and assume that this makes summer your season for shopping, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. It seems to be all about the platform, so step up, or step out.

Browse the gallery below to see what both Mango and Scarlett have on offer…

Gwen Stefani’s Stripy Sunday

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Gwen1.jpgOn Sunday, Gwen Stefani stepped out in what has proved to be a highly controversial outfit. Being one who never writes before thoroughly researched, I trawled through the abundance of bloggers who had signed on to write off her look as a fashion faux-pas. I, on the other hand, intend to (in the spirit of Gwen herself) go against the grain, and stand up in applause of the stripy skirt suit, white leggings and strappy towering heels. She does again, however, incite my paranoia that she is in cahoots with Vivienne Westwood on a conspiracy to influx the fashion market with iconic draped and wrap over pieces, and 7 inch strappy heels. Despite my suspicions of a merging of interests, I feel nothing but amazement at the image of the flawless forty year old mother dressed in candy striped eccentricities. At fifteen years her junior, and no kids in tow, I still fail to match her ability to not only look flawless, fashionable and fantastic at every occasion, but also must bow down to the vixen of versatility. When I scout the stock of images that lay available to me, I find four amazingly contrasting, intriguing, and boundary pushing outfits all in the space of two weeks! This is not just fashion, this is intelligent fashion. Only three days prior, Gwen steps out in a stunning silver dress and white leggings that compliment her snow queen features. Only a week before that she manages to do the undoable, to look classy and glamorous in black hot pants and a mid-drift revealing see through top. Did I mention she is forty and has two children in tow? Finally, no stone remains unturned in Gwen’s formulation of fashion firsts, just check out the baby sailor outfit. Gold star Gwen, you have definitely produced supremely adorable accessories.

3.1 Phillip Lim SS 2010 Ready to wear now available at thecorner.com

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

homepage Phillip Lim uk.jpgPhillip Lim’s collections have year on year astounded me with their perfect balances of the simple and the detailed, the sensible and the whimsical, the minimal and the profoundly stunning. Many high fashion designers favour the fantastical over the real, and produce spectacles only suitable for the waif-ly thin giraffes that grace the arena of the members only catwalk. Phillip Lim, on the other hand, seems to have a knack for producing items that aren’t only focused on sprucing up the unquestionably svelte . Not only this, his visions actually work well within the trials and tribulations of our day to day existences. Phillip Lim seems to be marrying the fabulous with the functional once again with his new collection, even introducing a beautiful lipstick red suit (aka fabulous) which is machine washable (I kid you not). 3.1′s SS Ready to Wear Collection continues in the spirit of clean lines, luxurious fabrics and homemade accents that Lim is famous for; but also incorporates a primitive collage concept inspired by a viewing of the Picasso: Mosqueteros show at the Gagosian gallery in New York. This collection of juxtapositions is a definitive contrast to previous collections that were drawn together by less abstract themes.Either way he has undeniably pulled out a winner of sumptuous sexy simplicity that has something in it for everyone. Those new to Lim’s work have much to look forward to in this veritable feast of fancies that is now available at www.thecorner.com ‘s virtual space as a new mini-store. I urge you online to observe and adore. But beware, the collection doesn’t come cheap, but think of it as an investment, a battle against the barrels of primark, topshop goods you throw out with the fall of each fashion fad. At least one thing is for sure, simple and elegant never goes out of style.

Rihanna takes centre stage in 7 space age outfits

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Never one to shy away from the lime light, Rihanna has pulled out all the stops on her ‘Last Girl on Earth’ Tour at the Gelredome Arena in Arnhem, Netherlands. Given the 22 year olds small stature she ensured no ticket holder could claim to not see her radiating on stage in a seven costume change extravaganza. She belted out her chart toppers, and pulled her show stopping moves in a risqué, body showing/ hugging array of space age spectacles. Emulating the unwearable couture styles of the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna dazzled her audiences in sequins, flesh coloured body suits, white mesh outfits, rear-revealing pvc outfits and a black and white outfit with huge puffballs on the shoulders. Reviewing the photographic evidence, one would of thought Rihanna’s costume choices were destined for the archives of embarrassing costume malfunction, but given that not much was on cover when the costumes were working at full capacity, it appeared not to phase the 22 year old Barbados born beauty, who confidently strided across the stage with no thought to her current state of coverage.
Stage costume belongs to a whole other realm of the fashion endeavour, a world without the constraints of function, comfort, modesty and appropriateness. It is an art form, existing without the dulling down that occurs when fashion is modified to meet consumer demand. It can express, it can shock, it can surprise and it can amaze. In this regard, Rihanna certainly provided us with some sensational show pieces that push the boundaries of the acceptable and the expected.

At Last weekend’s Coachella in Indio, California, well polished celebrities from a multitude of talented backgrounds enjoyed themselves to musicians headlined byJay Z, Muse and the Gorillaz. Get your Make-up Ready For Summer

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

The current spate of sunshine suggests, although summer might not be here yet, it’s on its way, and it’s given us a preview trailer. Though must of us have become adept at changing our clothes in response to the weather, it seems many often believe make-up to be an all year round kind of thing. If you are still clinging to the 3 inches of foundation and smoky eyes that got you through the Christmas party season I suggest you read carefully, you still have time to make the adjustments slowly.

Matthew Williamson’s “Butterfly” range sweeps into Debenhams

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Butterfly.jpgWell known for his flowing bohemian influenced brightly coloured garments, but not so bohemian prices; Matthew Williamson cuts the hefty price tag and offers us high street shoppers something of his, for much less. His new range for Debenhams enters stores this week taking its name “Butterfly” from an inspirational painting he saw in Rajasthan in 1997, and this Indian influence emerges strongly in the assortment on offer.
The collection houses all one will need to embrace the summer months, from light coloured summer dresses, brightly flowing skirts to exotic looking bikinis. And if you’re willing to pay the maximum price of £120, you can get yourself a maxi dress emblazoned with Williamson’s signature style of vibrant prints. The majority of the items are labelled coral, embroidered, kaftan or tunic, so if the ‘I’ve travelled to far off lands’ look isn’t your thing, and your more comfortable in a pencil skirt and twin set, then this probably isn’t the collection for you. If you are, however, desperate to own a piece of Matthews then the charcoal grey satin dress at £50 is simple, stylish and there’s no pattern in sight.
It’s a particularly large collection, especially in the accessories department with many different items of jewellery, bags, purses, belts and other highly detailed pieces to choose from. Definitely worth a look even if you think at first it’s not your style, you could always buy something and sell it on ebayfor a profitable margin, should you decide it disagrees with you. Given it will surely sell out, the rules of supply and demand are ultimately working in your favour. Finally, if you like the butterfly motif there are also a number of butterflies adorning many of the items. It’s nice when things do what they say.

Get the look: Chloe Sevigny’s festival sandals

By laurenbravo on April 19th, 2010

chloesevignysocks.jpgWith festival season just around the corner (watch this space for our round-up of the most fashion-forward fests to be seen at this summer), it’s time to start planning those tent-friendly outfits.

Be outstanding in your field by looking to some of the most seasoned celebs – Pixie Lott, Agyness Deyn, the Geldof girls and Florence Welch all do festival chic expertly, with lots of hotpants, sundresses and vintage t-shirts flying that Brit fashion flag.

But bringing a catwalk edge to the meadows and moshpits isn’t always easy, which is why Chloe Sevigny should be applauded for her efforts. From leather shorts to Lanvin dresses and that visible bra look, the Big Love actress has never been afraid to push style boundaries. So when we saw this picture of her at last year’s Coachella wearing socks with flat sandals, we knew that sooner or later we would come round to the idea.

CAT-R304593-040709-rgb150.jpgAnd so we have. It may have taken a year, but with 2010′s Coachella currently in swing we thought we might give the look a go with these lookalike sandals from Cat Footwear. At £59.99 we’re guessing they’re a darn sight cheaper than Chloe’s pair, and they’re the perfect way to dress down summer’s prim and proper frocks.

Plus, they’re a far less sweaty alternative to wellies for covering festival terrain. We’re putting good money on the flat sandal being a hit with this year’s festival fashionistas, but whether it’s Glasto or your garden, take a tip from Chloe and go comfy. Oh, and if you attempt them with socks, send us a picture. We want evidence.

Stuck in London? Three great East London fashion stores to check out

By Ashleyn on April 19th, 2010

jessafiii.jpg
Alana McVerry writes

If the Icelandic volcano’s untimely eruption has ruined your plans for shopping on the continent, don’t be dismayed at the hold up but use the scheduled time off to enjoy London’s undiscovered offerings. Head to the East End for three of London’s hidden gems, from the quirky to the down right unreal, I give you one for every mood swing.

If you (a) are so annoyed that you’re still stuck in dismal England and want to blow some cash then head to Startboutique on Rivington street in Shoreditch. Started by a former cult rock star and her partner this boutique offers the new and upcoming alongside the established labels of the high fashion family. Given the rock star credentials, you can expect something a little more exciting than your usual pricey boutique spread.

If you (b) are so bored of London’s offerings, you can’t imagine there’s anything you haven’t seen before then head to 146 Columbia Road to see Jessie and Buddug (that’s them on the left)who sell crafty pieces and original clothing designs in what looks like the interior of an 18th Century boudoir. Further, if you ask for the changing rooms you will be directed to their work studio, which is a candy shop of off cut fabrics and accessories. It is what I imagine to be the fashion version of a mad scientists laboratory.

Or if you (c) have missed a vital flight to a far away land where the British pound is still strong and bargains expected then I have two options for you. If you just wanted good clothes cheap then head to the East End Thrift shop in the Waterman’s building E1, which offers the kind of cheap second hand shopping long lost in our vintage hungry age, but with nice tidy rails organised by item. Or, if it was knock off designer labels that were really pushing you to board that jet, then the centre of hackney can get you a British Burberry Mac for half the recommended price amongst other Burberry designed garb. Just look for the Burberry factory shop at 29 Chatham Place, E9.

So there you are. I bet you’ve decided you didn’t need to leave London after all. Mission accomplished.

Spring 2010 trend: the five key pieces you need in your wardrobe this season

By laurenbravo on April 18th, 2010

wenn2603022.jpgDenim

Not since Van Halen were in the charts has denim been so hot. That’s a lie – it wasn’t hot then, but it is now. And it’s a hardworker this year, popping up in shirt form, shorts form, skirt form, dress form and top form. Make sure you’re on top form by keeping it light (snow-wash is the new indigo) and teaming it with florals or lace.

On the catwalk: despite its connotations of Americana, the Brit pack lead the denim revolution. Look to House of Holland (Henry’s SS ’10 collection for Levi’s was full of great structured pieces, while Pixie Geldof’s rocking some great denim in his new line for Debenhams), Twenty8Twelve and Stella McCartney, with Chloe and Dolce and Gabbana also turning out some fab denim looks.

On the high street:
we hardly need to tell you where to shop for denim (‘everywhere’ would suffice, and make our job a lot easier) but particular ports of call should include New Look for denim bra tops and dresses, H&M for a massive range of shorts and skirts and Urban Outfitters for shirts worthy of a country crooner.

The key piece: a denim dress with a structured, bra-shaped bodice. Those underwired cups inject a little sex appeal into a prairie-girl classic.

Loud lycra

Legs just won’t look right this season unless they’re sticking out the bottom of some wildly coloured leggings or cycling shorts. You may have been steering clear of the shorts since failing your year 6 cycling proficiency, but we say it’s time to reconsider – under full-skirted sundresses they’re a great way to play down primness, under denim they bring a sporty, Fresh Prince of Bel Air-ish vibe, and under a massive t-shirt you’re… well, your Mum in the early 90s. But hey, bravery is always rewarded.

On the catwalk: DKNY achieved a fantastic feat, in making cycling shorts work for the office, with sharp blazers and demure wrap dresses. Donna even layered pink lycra shorts under black tailored shorts, in a move reminiscent of those trouser-skirts we all used to wear when we were 12. But much more appealing.

On the high street: Henry Holland wins once again, with a nice little range of coloured cycling shorts in his H! range for Debenhams, while American Apparel, as ever, is the obvious go-to for spritely sportswear.

The piece: A pair of fuchsia cycling shorts look great on tanned or pale legs, and add a sporty twist to summer florals. The bike is optional, but we’d like one with a basket on the front.

wenn2770203.jpgSomething nude

You might not be feeling bikini-ready, but there’s another way to bare all, with this season’s palette of flesh tones. They have a reputation for being hard to wear, but the most difficult part of the process is discovering which nude is the nude for you. It’s a little bit like choosing the right foundation. For blondes and fair, freckly types, choose rosy and peachy shades and steer clear of anything too pale for fear of looking like a vanilla Minimilk. For tans and olive skins, ivory and buff look fab, while black and Asian skins can get away with almost all shades, but look particularly good in caramel and biscuitty colours. Yum. The way to keep nudes looking fresh for 2010 is to wear them in luxe fabrics, like silk and lace, so the effect is more boudoir than ladies who lunch.

On the catwalk: Chloe was at the forefront of the nude revolution, with their oh-so-chic collection of camel blouses and slacks. Chanel and Valentino also dished up neutral shades, while Alexa Chung sported a sweet toffee-coloured skirt suit to host a recent Mulberry party.

On the high street:
Zara is always a safe bet when looking for grown up design, and they’ve delivered a great selection of muted shirts, shorts and blazers to take you from boardroom to beach in style. Meanwhile Topshop is like a candy store full of sweet, sugary nude pieces.

The key piece: A silky or sheer pussy bow blouse, in a barely-there shade, is a great sexy-prim playoff to team with your shorts.

A shirt

There are two types of shirt dominating the shops this summer, and they sit at opposing ends of the androgyny spectrum – there’s the oversized boyfriend shirt, and the crisp preppy shirt. The first should be big enough to wear as a dress, with rolled-up sleeves and maybe a few paint splatters here and there. Tartan lumberjack shirts had their day last year, but there’s still definitely a place for denim, brushed cotton and checked specimens. Meanwhile, the preppy shirt should be in a pretty, sorbet shade and worn like a showjumping champion, starched within an inch of its life and tucked into trousers or skirt with a skinny belt.

On the catwalk: Chloe was a great example of how to get shirty in style, while Céline can always be relied on to bring some French finesse to a wardrobe staple.

On the high street: Go back to basics at Banana Republic, Cos and the United Colours of Benetton, or hunt for slouchy boyfriend styles at Beyond Retro or Urban Outfitters.

The key piece: A blue chambray shirt that can be worn loose over a dress, or tucked in, cowgirl-style.

Sturdy shoes

Ladies, I’m pleased to announce we are almost coming to the end of the era of masochistic footwear. Almost, but not quite. Heels are lower and slightly less ridiculous than in recent years, but this summer will be a final fling for the stompy shoe. We’ve talked about clogs until we’re just about ready to jump off a windmill, but this round-up just couldn’t be written without giving rustic footwear a mention. So stilt up one last time, with some chunky wooden platforms, espadrilles or cork wedges. They’ll give your calf muscles a workout, and look a darn sight more attractive than fit flops.

On the catwalk: Burberry and Chanel ruled the catwalk stomp comp, with weighty wedges and massive mules.

On the high street: Kurt Geiger have the cutest clogs around, and we love Aldo and Office for fierce wedges with buckles and rope detail.

The key piece: Studded leather mule wedges, fresh from the fashion rodeo.

Why flip-flops are a fashion fail

By laurenbravo on April 17th, 2010

wenn5269841.jpgLauren Bravo writes:

So here it is, summer. Overnight we’ve gone from the meandering, half-arsed, do-I-need-a-jacket-or-don’t-I bustlings of spring to full blown, heatstrokey, builders-with-their-tops-off summer. The streets are full of people tentatively walking around in last year’s shorts and sundresses, looking at each other blinkedly as if to say, “this can’t be RIGHT, can it?” and wondering how early is too early for a beer.

But ho, here we are. Another year, another set of sartorial dilemmas to ponder over our Calippos. Will this be the year you actually stick to the regime of bicep dips and can swear off cardigans? Will you find a way of wearing kaftans that looks more Jemima Khan than Demis Roussos? And will you, finally, forgo the flip-flop?

Actually that last one is less a ponderance, more a plea. I am standing here, asking you all very nicely to please, please, not wear flip-flops this summer. Ladies, men (especially men), children, friends, Romans, countrymen, anyone with toes between which to shove bits of plastic; I am begging you. No more flip-flops.

After a short stint on Wikipedia I’ve been unable to find a name for the phobia of flip-flops, but as a lifelong sufferer I think the condition deserves recognition. I’m actually having a little trouble writing the words. I might start calling them the Shoes Which Must Not be Named, like the Dark Lord of footwear.

I’m not alone in this either. Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon in 30 Rock, who may as well be crowned official Queen of All Womankind for her neo-feminist philosophy and championing of donut consumption, notably hates flip-flops. She calls them “gross”. I call them a total waste of a shoe opportunity.

Flip-flops are a non-choice. With the galaxy of beautiful footwear that exists in the world, I just can’t fathom why anyone chooses to finish off a nice outfit with a pair of flip-flops. It’s like putting on couture then carrying your gubbins around in a Somerfield carrier bag. And it doesn’t matter how dainty and bejewelled your pair might be – as far as I’m concerned, there just isn’t enough material to make them an item of style. It’s the same reason wearing a bikini to an awards ceremony will never land you in Vogue.

You might think this is a foot-revulsion thing. But while I’ll admit that the sight of a bloke’s hairy toes isn’t one that rouses a passionate appetite, I am not a footist. Feet are fine. But the unnatural parting of the toes with that little bit of rubber, or leather, or plastic suddenly turns the foot into a thing of horror. They are, to all intents and purposes, foot floss. Imagine if we all started going around with bits of string looped around just our armpits, or… well, I’ll leave you to think of your own crevices.

Then there’s the debilitating factor. It’s a tricky one, this, because of course we wear plenty of other stupid shoes. We wear shoes that make us trot along like a pony, shoes that we can only wear when sitting down, shoes that turn us into limping, snivelling, barefooted fools. I have just spent a week learning to walk down stairs in a pair of clogs without stacking it and ripping off the banister. But those shoes don’t pretend to be anything other than challenging; we know what we are getting ourselves into. Flip-flops, on the other hand, masquerade as something comfortable. They pretend to be an easy option for swollen summer feet, but when you factor in the blister trackmarks and the muscle work involved in keeping the damn things on, they end up in the top quartile of effortful wearing along with sarongs and crinolines.

Plus, you can’t run in flip-flops. You have to do an undignified lollop, with the slippy-slappy soundtrack to match. I have it on pretty good authority that nobody in flip-flops has ever successfully run after and caught a shoplifter. Next time you’re debating a summer shoe choice, it might be helpful to ask the question: “if I get mugged today, which pair would best help me disarm the thief?”

But all that aside, the fact of the matter is that, as we’ve already shown you, this season is full of gorgeous shoes. We have candy colours, stacked heels, Mary-Janes, boots, spindle heels, chunky sandals, brogues, tassels, loafers, wedges, pumps, bows, bells and whistles. We’re even allowed to wear some of them with socks. We have everything our feet could ask for (almost – I lied about the whistles). We have no excuse for wearing flip-flops.

So do your wardrobe justice and throw away the foot floss this year. And for all of you coming to beat me up on behalf of the flip-flop devotees everywhere, don’t bother. You’ll never catch me. Put some proper shoes on and you might have a chance.

We were really upset when we found out that Ugly Betty was going to be axed a few months ago.

However it seems there’s a small silver lining to this cloud, with news that the fashion girl could be set for film stardom. Yes that’s right, an Ugly Betty film could be coming to a big screen near us in the not so distant future.

Get the look: Lady Gaga’s black patent biker boots

By Andrea Petrou on April 15th, 2010

lady gaga boots.jpg

As our regular readers will know by now we’re huge fans of Lady Gaga over here at ShinyStyle. Yes, she may do some crazy things such as defacing £3000 Birkin bags and putting her health at risk by wearing unsuitable outfits on planes, but there’s no denying the Lady has style.

Normally we wouldn’t attempt to even try wearing her kooky outfits – they are for her, and her only – but sometimes there’s something in her wardrobe that we might just be able to get away with, and in this case it’s the black PVC boots she was spotted wearing on one of her many days out.

We love this footwear, which gives a nod to the punk trend and is very Vivienne Westwood. Although we wouldn’t be brave enough to team them up with a sheer top and matching black undies a la Lady G, we would consider wearing them with a skirt or shorts for a more casual look.

Get Gaga’s look with these Bumper Black Patent Biker Boots from Shudoo. At £235 they aren’t the cheapest shoes on the block but we think it’s a small price to pay for Lady Gaga style.
