Cannes day 9: AmfArRs Cinema Against AIDS benefit gala

By Andrea Petrou on May 21st, 2010

Day 9 of the Cannes Film Festival saw A-listers dressing up in the name of charity for the AmfArRs Cinema Against AIDS benefit gala at the Hotel du Cap.

And it was a night of sophisticated designer dresses. Diane Kruger, Rachel Bilson and Kirsten Dunst went for glam in Chanel dresses while Michelle Williams went for short and daring in a sequined dress by Sonia Rykiel.

Fresh off her catwalk debut Mischa Barton went for Marchesa while Jennifer Lopez unsurprisingly opted for a pink princess frock by Roberto Cavalli.

Paris Hilton also turned up in a white bridal inspired number. However our best dressed starlets of the night have to be Kate Beckinsale, who looked amazing in a silver gown by Armani Prive and Emily Blunt who wowed us in a simple red dress.

Kristen Stewart gets all dolled up, but what do you think of her look?

By Andrea Petrou on May 21st, 2010

We’ve had a little bit of a dig at Kristen Stewart in the past. Not because of her style but because she always looks so darn miserable. However her natural, sassy and slightly grungy look is really what makes her stand out from the other cutesy smiling celebs.

So you can imagine how surprised we were when we spotted these pictures of the Twilight star, which were taken for Slovakian magazine Eva.

The actress has been completely transformed into a typical looking cover-girl complete with a fake Marilyn Monroe beauty spot and lots of airbrushing.

Frankly we’re quite disappointed in these shots, which totally strip Kristen of her original style and we really hope this look doesn’t stick. View our mini gallery of the photos for Eva and our pick of Kristen in more natural surroundings and tell us which look you prefer by voting below.

Armed and Glamorous: Can you work the military look?

By laurenbravo on May 20th, 2010

wenn5363147.jpgMilitary is one of those trends that strikes fear into the heart of many a committed shopper. It’s notoriously difficult to wear and has so many unpleasant associations – the mid 90s, Jodie Marsh, war – that many of us steer clear altogether. But that might prove hard this season, as not since All Saints topped the charts has the khaki colourway been so cool.

WAG’s favourite Balmain marched the look down the runway (left), with brassy detailing and fierce boots, while Max Mara, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander Wang all showed collections with a distinct utilitarian flavour. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a default move of the fashion pack, to ‘go military’ every few years as a backlash against all the cupcake-cute florals that spring and summer inevitably dish up. But who, apart from Demi Moore and Scary Spice, can really pull it off?

Well, if the high street is to be believed, we all can. This time round the look is less GI Jane and more Little Drummer Boy, with buttons, embellishments and epaulettes adding some glitz to the mix, while shapes are a combination of structured and soft – think cropped jackets with draped jersey trousers and heels. The colours are softer too, with flashes of pink, coral and nude livening up the army tones. And best of all, there’s no camouflage print in sight.

It’s a move away from the purposeful butch of previous military trends, which tended to feel fancy dress if you let your Girl Power mask slip momentarily and squealed, or something. The military woman of 2010 is a hardy sort, make no mistake, but she’s more likely to be knocking back a cocktail than doing a jumping high-kick over a tank. She’s an adventurer. She wears peg-legged khaki trousers with industrial wedges and a softly draped blazer. She goes from the office to the bar without needing to run home and change. She never complains that her feet hurt.

But can we be the military woman? I’m a pacifist, for a start, but then fashion has never been too concerned with the reality of its motifs. Hooker boots? Lolita dresses? You see my point. Besides, the stumbling block for me, as I’m sure with lots of you, is the colours. Khaki and its dirgy cousins, stone, taupe and (shudder) beige have always been style no-gos in my head. They are colours for grown-ups; they feel ‘chic’ rather than fun. all-saints.jpg

I’ve ventured into the realms of military only once since I was 12, and that was with a parka. Having seen Quadrophenia a few too many times, I thought the mod staple would channel some sixties cool into my festival look, so I wore it for a summer over flowery dresses and blouses. I relegated it to the back of the wardrobe when I realized it made me look like a dumpy Geography teacher on a field trip. And there we have the most crucial rule of military dressing: clothe, do not conceal, your assets.

Those of us blessed with lean, boyish frames can do the parkas, the Breton tops and the braces to their hearts’ content, but my shapelier sisters need to take it in another direction. To embrace your lady lumps while staying utilitarian, try mixing in the underwear as outerwear trend – khaki shorts or trousers with a silky pink camisole is a great place to start. Or you could steer it toward safari and work a shirt dress or playsuit, keeping shoes flat and make-up low key to avoid the Anne Summers Does Solider Girl look.

Or if you’re still unconvinced, there are always accessories. Beaten leather satchels are having a massive moment right now, and wearing one with a cross-body strap is an easy nod to combat style. Likewise aviator sunnies, army boots and jewellery that looks like battle armour. Or failing all else, just put on Never Ever and pretend to be one of the Appletons. The 90s did worse things, after all.

Cannes Day 9: Get the look- Penelope Cruz’s red dress

By Andrea Petrou on May 20th, 2010

Penelope Cruz Cannes Auction.jpg

Penelope Cruz stepped out during day 9 of the Canne’s film festival to host an auction in aid of the Jenkins-Penn Haitian relief organisation.

The spanish actress stepped out in a gorgeous red wrap dress and silver shoes to mark the occasion, which aims to raise funds by auctioning off star’s dresses. And one celeb that really came up trump is Salma Hayek who donated the first ever Gucci Couture dress, which she wore to day one of the Cannes film festival.

However, we feel we’ve spoken enough about Salma so we decided to have a trawl around to see if we could find a frock similar to Pen’s at of course, a highstreet price. And we did. Now it’s not exactly the same, but the neckline and length are almost identical to Ms Cruz’s. It’s from Very and we think it’s a steal at £59.

Team it up with flats for a day in the office or with heels and accessories for a night out.

The Fashion Pixie launches bargain shopping iPhone App.

By Andrea Petrou on May 20th, 2010

Fashion Pixie iPhone.jpg
Yesterday we told you about a fantastic beauty time saving app so when we got another app email in our inbox we had to tell you about this too, especially since it saves you money.

TheFashionPixie.com
has launched the UK’s First Fashion Bargain ‘App’, which is an online alert service for bargain hunters and makes it easier for users to find the best retail deals while on the move.

The concept, brings together the best offers from over 300 retailers at one independent online portal. The site gathers its information about discounts and sales from virtually every national retailer, fashion website and high street shop, and posts the deals on one website, that is updated several times each day.

The launch follows the success of the free to use website and twice-weekly email alert service that has seen thousands of women sign up since its launch in December. The iPhone App is now available to download free from iTunes.

“This is the first iPhone application dedicated to fashion retail sales, yet there are millions of women wanting to save money and find the best deals on the high street and online,” said Fiona Kendall of TheFashionPixie.com.

“The App allows you to see where the best high street bargains are, even while out shopping, and that means you can go straight to the stores that have the best deals that day and grab the best pieces, before they’re snapped up,” she added.

Unlike voucher sites the online community is focused on the high street, although it also details online deals and codes. The site has numerous ‘Pixies’; contributors who visit shops and high streets in several cities throughout the UK.

TheFashionPixie.com founder Nicole Snape said: “Since the iPhone was released to more networks last year, we have been receiving more and more requests for an App and we are all about giving users the best information in whatever format they want.”

TheFashionPixie.com App is available to download free from the iTunes store and users can register in seconds to receive twice-weekly email sales alerts or just browse the live sales information and see where discounts are on any given day

ShinyStyle Watch: Lady Gaga in Tokyo

By Andrea Petrou on May 20th, 2010

We hated (ok that might be a bit strong) Lady Gaga when she defaced her Hermes bag with Japanese characters on the first day of her Japan tour.

However, we’re over that now, especially since we’ve heard that it was the handiwork of performance artist Terence Koh who has contibuted vocaly to Ms G’s songs.

We know this, because our friends over Grazia have just been watching ‘Gagakoh!’ the film put together by MAC, who sponsored Lady G’s Viva Glam gigs in Tokyo last month. And we’ve also managed to get hold of it for you to see!

Sit back and watch Miss G in her finest hour with very little attire and tell us what you think.

Myleene Klass wears her yellow shoes with every outfit at Cannes

By Andrea Petrou on May 20th, 2010

We’re all for wearing our clothes as much as possible but it’s very unlike stars to do the same making us wonder if Myleene Klass has become a victim of the clothing credit crunch.

The presenter who is currently enjoying the highlights of the Cannes Film Festival has not stepped out of her bright yellow shoes since, it seems, the event started teaming them up with every outfit she’s been snapped in at premiers, parties and even out and about.

Myleene teamed up her peep toes with a chiffon layered skirt for the Chopard party and then again with a white tea length strapless dress for the De Grisogono Dinner Party and now they’ve made their way into her everyday life too.

The starlet was snapped yesterday out and about in a black and white spotted boatneck dress, which she teamed up with a red bag, and yes, you guessed it, those yellow shoes.

View our mini gallery to see what we’re talking about.

What do you think of these peep toes and do you think Myleene is setting a good example to us fashionistas by showing you can wear the same thing over and over again. Leave your comments in the box below and let us know.

Cannes Film Festival 2010 trends: White

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2010

We’ve been covering the Cannes Film Festival all week and one thing we’ve noticed is that it’s the usual A-listers at each event. So we’ve decided to mix it up a bit and look at some of the trend that have been flowing around at all the premiers and parties. And what better way to start than with the celebrity style du jour white.

Now we’re not just talking about the bridal look here although Eva Longoria and Fan Bing Bing have sported this trend at one time during the event, we’re talking about the colour in general.

Eva Hertzigova and Lindsay Lohan decided to wear this colour at the Chopard party as did Nicky Hilton and Lady Victoria Hervey and yesterday’s events were no different with Naomi Campbell and Myleene Klass opting for this shade at the De Grisogono Dinner Party and Doutzen Kroes at the Of Gods and Men premier.

View our gallery for all the white dresses over the Cannes Film Festival so far.

Twilight director says Ashley Greene’s pay dispute could turn nasty

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Ashley.JPG

A few weeks ago we reported that there were disputes between Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz and the directors of Twilight were in force over pay and now it seems the row is getting deeper.

Twighlight director Catherine Harwick has waded into the pay dispute over the last two films saying ‘things could turn ugly’ if it is not resolved

Filming for the last two movies have already been delayed as the two stars branded the pay offers as “offensive” and despite alternative offers it seems things aren’t getting better with rumours the the two members of the cast may be replaced.

And it now seems more likely than ever that bosses will have to replace the two actors for final film, Breaking Dawn.

‘It would really break my heart if they were replaced, but it could happen,’ first Twilight director Catherine Hardwick told reporters at last weekend’s Twilight convention in Vancouver.

Oh dear.

What do you think of the scenario? Would you be upset if these two were replaced?

Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp turn up for Chanel party in Cannes

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2010

Vanessa Paradis Chanel Party-400.jpg

Day seven of the Cannes Film Festival saw a huge range of events. But one that really stands out to us here at ShinyStyle in the Chanel Party, which was of course hosted by Karl Lagerfeld.

And it came as no surprise that Vanessa Paradis was the guest of honour. The model who turned up with hubby Johnny Depp, looked stunnng in a black backless dress and shoes andkept it casual with minimal make-up and loose hair.

Vanessa is fronting the new Coco Coccon collection for the brand this year, but it’s not the first time she’s been associated with Chanel.

The actress has frequently chosen to walk the red carpet dressed in ChanelL, and in 2004 Karl made her the ambassadress of the “Ligne Cambon” handbag range. The following year, the designer asked her to pose again, this time for the “New Mademoiselle” bags.

Cheryl Cole performs at the De Grisogono jewellery dinner in a Roberto Cavalli dress

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2010

Cheryl Cole Roberto Cavalli-400.jpg

Yesterday we reported that Cheryl Cole was being paid £250,000 to perform at the De Grisogono jewellery dinner party at the Eden Rock Hotel in Cap d’Antibes during the Cannes Film Festival.

And last night, wearing a strapless Roberto Cavalli dress and jewellery from de Grisogono, she did her thing singing ‘Fight for This Love‘, ‘Three Words‘, ‘Parachutes’, and a new song, ‘Stand Up’.

The singer was escorted at the event attended by the likes of Naomi Campbell by the head of the company, Fawaz Gruosi and we have to say we think she really stands out as one of the best dressed of the festival.

Keep reading for for our daily Cannes Festival round-up.
