Spotted: Abbey Clancy, Myleene Klass and Kelly Brook

By Shiny writer on August 4th, 2010

It was work and no play for celebrities yesterday, as many were spotted coming in and out of their various work places.

Abbey Clancy kicked off the day in boyfriend jeans, a casual tee and black flip-flops for filming on This Morning, while Myleene Klass opted for a white sundress accessorised with statement glasses for her appearance on GMTV.

And it was casual attire for Lisa Snowden who was spotted leaving the Capital Radio studios in skinny jeans, on-trend slouch boots and a military style blazer. However, Kelly Brook took her outfit to a whole new level, posing in Reebok sportswear for her grand unveiling of a billboard picture of her posing naked for the brand in Battersea.

Later on in the day Thandie Newton donned a cute print tee and floral skirt for the Into The Hoods – The streetdance show premier. She was joined by Hollyoaks star Nathalie Emmanuel who went for a polka dot short skirt and black top for the event.

First looks: Madonna’s Material Girl collection

By Shiny writer on August 4th, 2010

She bagged Taylor Momsen as her model and a spot in Macy’s so it was hardly surprising that people were queueing around the block yesterday to get their hands on Madonna’s new clothing range.

The pop icon who has also set the fashion world alight with her stage outfits over the years has ventured into the designing world with her daughter Lourdes and launched the Material Girl collection aimed at 15-25 year olds.

Yesterday’s launch saw girls eager to get their hands on the collection, presented with cupcakes by models and greeted by Madonna look-a-likes. They were also treated to a mini concert by Taylor Momsen, although Madge and her teenage inspiration didn’t show.

And the range of clothing which includes fishnet tights, low cut mini dresses, mini skirts, lace dresses, 80s ra-ra skirts and sequined hot pants, has already been criticised by children’s groups who have said the collection is “less than wholesome” considering the teen age target.

Considering the range is targeted up to 25 years old we’re not so sure there’s a need to be concerned, afterall the styles are similar to what’s out there at the moment. However, we thought we’d give you the chance to have your say. View the collection and then vote below to let us know whether you think the range is too much for teens.

The case for Vintage fashion

By Shiny writer on August 3rd, 2010

Guest post by Saru Balakrishnan at Lalita

Vintage is the current buzzword amongst fashionistas who know that in order to be one step ahead of the fashion pack individuality is the key.

Vintage fashion allows you to style your outfit in a unique and affordable way and is becoming the hot new trend this summer.

Not only are you setting new fashion standards but people are turning to vintage as a way of adopting “green” practices.  There has been a movement away from the “cheap” fashion that has been invading our high streets as the cost of purchasing these items is becoming ever clearer with stories appearing daily about sweatshops and child labour.

The concept of wearing vintage also aids the planet by shunning the consumerist nature of our society, encouraging re-using – something Miss Westwood would be proud of!

Vintage is the eco-friendly way to be stylish and yet still remains reasonably priced, allowing access to high quality designer products that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. For many this is a rare window to feel the luxury of top designer brands.

Fashion designers are constantly looking to the past for creative inspiration and now that vintage fashion is hitting the high street you too can create your own distinctive look. The history that comes with each individual item is something that undoubtedly allures its many followers.

Celebrities have been leading the trend for vintage fashion, preferring vintage over new designs for the red carpet. Not only does this provide them with a sensuous glamour that can only be evoked from the past, but on a practical level ensures that they won’t risk wearing the same outfit as another star.

Vintage fashion covers items ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s meaning there is something to appeal to all. The 20s are well known for their flapper dresses, which translate today as elegant chic as worn by Kirsten Dunst, the 50s, for top to toe smouldering glamour and the 80s for their bright and bold cuts and colours.

To get the best from your vintage purchase look for top quality names.  Vintage items dating before the early 1970s were generally made in Europe by skilled craftsmen and that is why they have survived so well.  The best way to wear vintage is to accessorise with one or two key pieces.

Buying vintage has never been easier with vintage shops now appearing on many high streets and a number of quality online retailers.  Most vintage sellers on the internet give full descriptions of the items together with photos so you should be safe with your purchase.  However if you are not happy you can return items within a week for a full refund.

Vintage is the most exciting and innovative aspect gracing the fashion world at the moment – what more persuading do you need to shop vintage?

Gallery: The changing style of Taylor Momsen

By Shiny writer on August 3rd, 2010

There’s not much to say about Taylor Momsen that hasn’t already been said. Don’t get us wrong, we’re big fans of the Gossip Girl, turned rocker, and it seems we’re not alone.

This year she’s received attention from both Madonna and John Galliano and her band, Pretty Reckless is going from strength. She’s also had a modelling debut with New Look and although it seems she’s an old starlet, she’s not.

She’s just accomplished alot in her young life and she’s also created a fashion statement amongst her fans- the stockings and suspenders.

However, she wasn’t always the rock chick, complete with statement thick eyeliner and bright red lipstick. And up until 2008, her clothes were sensible and girly to match her Gossip Girl character Jenny Humphrey. We have a look at her changing faces.

Trend Alert: Top five beautiful bras

By Shiny writer on August 3rd, 2010

Let’s face it. A sexy or cute bra, even if you don’t have a date, makes you feel better about yourself and your outfit.

And with so many on the market there’s really no excuse to still be wearing that discoloured and torn one you’ve had for years. Not only will doing this mean you may experience Bridget Jones style moments but it can also make you uncomfortable. According to specialists you should have your bra size checked every 6 months to a year, or if you have lost or put on weight, sooner.

Not wearing the right bra size or wearing a bra that’s falling apart won’t give you the support you need and could also lead to backaches or sore breasts.

And it doesn’t take long or cost to get measured up either with both Marks and Spencer and La Senza offering free measuring services so you have more money to spend on beautiful new bras.

Here’s our best five for the a/w season.

Fashion face-off: Megan Fox vs Rosie Huntington Whiteley

By Andrea Petrou on August 3rd, 2010

Transformers 3 filming is making great headway and we’ve been getting pictures from the filming starring new girl on the Transformers block, Rosie Huntington Whiteley who very publicly took over from Megan Fox.

But is there really a great deal of difference between the two? After all they have both starred in Transformers, modelled underwear and are seen as two of the most beautiful, not to mention stylish women in the world.

And if this didn’t make it hard enough, it seems they have very similar fashion sense. Both women will often opt for a short, yet simple frock to an event (although Rosie will sometimes go for a tight maxi) and both love their casual style.

However it’s Megan that’s the braver of the two when it comes to “slobbing out” working those leggings and Ugg boots, while Rosie is rarely snapped in anything less than jeans. And lately we’ve been leaning further towards the Victoria’s Secret model after Megan appeared at a premier looking bloated and stretched leading us to believe she had plastic surgery.

We’ve put together a gallery of the two starlet’s style. Take a look and let us know who you think should win the best dressed award by voting below.

Spotted: Ellie Goulding, Paloma Faith and Amy Winehouse

By Shiny writer on August 3rd, 2010

London was awash with celebrities in casual, smart and outrageous attire yesterday as the likes of Leona Lewis, Paloma Faith and Jessica Taylor hit the town.

Paloma once again showed off her outrageous, yet excellent style opting for a pink glitter ballgown frock, which she once again teamed up with a funky headpiece, while Leona Lewis went for a bodycon skirt and shoe boots (we want) for a special viewing of The Sorcerers Apprentice.

But it was also a dress down day for some. Jessica Taylor opted for baggy khaki combat trousers for a walk in Chelsea with hubby Kevin Pieterson, while Fearne Cotton went for baggy highwaisted boyfriend jeans and a rock tee for her day at the Radio One studios. Ellie Goulding also kept it simple with skinny jeans and an 80s style bomber jacket.

However, it was once again Amy Winehouse who won the “scruffy” award opting for denim hotpants, which seemed to be a bit big for her, and of course her trademark ballet pumps.

Trend alert: Nautical must-haves

By Shiny writer on August 2nd, 2010

The nautical trend has been huge this season with tops bearing anchors, dresses with stripes and shoes in staple nautical colours filling the highstreet.

Although the summer fashion season is coming to an end with stores gearing up for their autumn collections, there’s still lots of time to stock up on this style for your holiday, up-coming festivals and even into the next season, as it looks like this trend will be sailing through to autumn too.

The best thing about this trend is that it can be as subtle (think navy stripes) or obvious (think anchors everywhere) as you like. It can also be matched with just about anything.

We’ve picked our best five.

Fashion face-off: Chelsea Clinton VS Alicia Keys

By Shiny writer on August 2nd, 2010

It was a weekend of celebrity weddings as both Chelsea Clinton and Alicia Keys took the plunge. Both ladies walked down the aisle in Vera Wang, Chelsea in a strapless A-line number and Alicia in a Grecian inspired frock.

You can visit our sister site Bridalwave for all the bridal goss of the weekend, but over here at ShinyStyle we thought it was time we pitted the two brides against each other in the style stakes. They may have gone for the same wedding dress designer on their big days but this is where their fashion similarities end.

Understandably so when you consider Alicia is an R ‘n’ B singer and Chelsea is the daughter of the former president.

While Alicia goes for glitz at events (she wore a huge glitter ball gown to one) Chelsea goes for the classic look, opting for shift dress or her trademark blazer, shirt and trousers. And although Chelsea tries to play it casual at times, her look seems to get stuck between preppy and scruffy with flip-flops and frizzy curls.

On the other hand Alicia’s casual look is far better put together, usually consisting of jeans. If she decides to wear her hair curly she’ll also have it styled and defrizzed.

View the gallery of the new brides and tell us who you think wins the fashion face-off by voting below.

Spotted: Leona Lewis, Paloma Faith and Alexandra Burke

By Shiny writer on August 2nd, 2010

Alexandra Burke may have hit the headlines for having a very public snog with Kelly Brook’s ex Danny Cipriani, but it didn’t stop her looking glam when she was spotted at Heathrow airport this weekend. The X-Factor winner arrived back into London from Glasgow where she had been performing on at the In:Demand concert in skinny jeans, a printed tee and a waistcoat. She finished off the look with funky square glasses.

Alex was also joined at Heathrow by The Saturdays starlets Una Healy and Vanessa White. Una opted for a bodycon skirt, festival hat and boots while Vanessa went for casual jeans and Ugg boots.

In the centre or London Leona Lewis showed off her curves in a tight pencil skirt and crop top at Whisky Mist, while Coco Summer went for the preppy look in a blazer, shorts and brogues to celebrate her birthday at Nobu.

However, the best dressed prize of the weekend goes to Paloma Faith who turned up at the Radio 1 studios in quirky yellow platforms, a multi-coloured waistcoat and a statement headpiece to rival Lady Gaga’s.
