D&G Party: Naomi Campbell, Paloma Faith and Pixie Lott

By Andrea Petrou on September 22nd, 2010

Fashion and A-list gals alike turned up to honour Naomi Campbell for being in the modelling business for 25 years.

The party held by Dolce & Gabbana, who also designed a range of limited edition T-shirts featuring photos of Naomi done by some of the world’s top fashion photographers, was attended by the likes of Paloma Faith who rocked up in a leopard print dress and Jamie Winstone who opted for polka dots on her frock.

Naom’s fellow model Claudia Schiffer honoured her friend by wearing one of the limited designed tees while Tess Daly went for sexy tight leather trousers and a black top to mark the occasion. And it seems as though black was the colour du jour for the celebs with Lily Allen turning up in a lace frock in this shade, Naom’s herself opting for a dress in this colour and Pixie Lott going for a black ruffled rock.

Happy Birthday, Nicole Richie

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

With all this kerfuffle and fuss over London Fashion Week going on, we nearly forgot that it’s boho-queen Nicole Richie’s 29th birthday today. Sorry Nicole! We remembered just in time though.

LA’s favourite socialite and fashion designer has dramatically turned her life around since her 2006 health scares, when that famous bikini shot had everybody convinced that she was suffering from a severe eating disorder. A few years on and two pregnancies later with her boo Joel Madden, Nicole is looking healthier, happier and her House of Harlow 1960 jewellery line is loved by such big names as Madonna and Ashlee Simpson.

Not to mention that the girl’s got style. If it wasn’t for Nicole, would 1970s style have come back in quite the way it did? Queen of the maxi-dress and long, chocolatey bangs, she’s got that laid-back California-girl style that we all want to get (but sadly will never be as glamorous when you’re wearing it out and about in Staines). She’s pioneered some of the biggest trends over the last few years. Skinny jeans? Check. Oversized sunnies? Check. “It” handbag? Check.

In every major trend that’s come about in the last few years, Nicole’s been one of the first to get to the front line and show us how it’s done.  So happy birthday, Ms Richie, and keep up the good work! Shiny Style’s drinking to your health (and your ever-beautiful wardrobe). The gallery below follows Nicole’s life and outfits up until now.

After "The Simple Life", Nicole ditched the stripy hair and dungarees, lost a serious amount of weight and struck up a friendship with famous LA stylist Rachel Zoe. And so, Nicole's trademark hippy-luxe style is born.

LFW Highlights: Burberry

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

I’ve been looking forward to the Burberry show all week. And I’m pleased to say it didn’t disappoint. Alexa Chung and Sarah Jessica Parker both turned up to the event kitted out in khaki Burberry creations. Alexa in a satin high neck dress with a peter pan collar, and SJP in a fitted leather trench coat.

Alexa described the brand as “beautiful and aspherical”, and after seeing the designer’s SS2011 collection we most definitely agree. Models, including Jordan Dunne marched down the runway in leather trousers and fitted jackets.

Some jackets were beige, some black, some were leather. Others were trimmed with leather and PVC, while some had shoulders encrusted with studs. Many also had the 50s skinny waisted belt, which looks to be huge next year.

Leopard print made an appearance on jackets, dresses with zip detailing and a gorgeous strapless top, as did snakeskin in greens, whites, blues and blacks.

And just as we thought Christopher had forgotten all about the feminine line that is becoming so prominent in the SS2011 trends, out came the ruffled pastel coloured dresses with zip detailing. They were also given a contrasting rockier edge with the biker jackets Christopher teamed them up with.

Other dresses gave a nod to the 60s, with high necks and a loose satin silhouette. However we don’t envy those models who had to walk down that slippery catwalk in super high heels and we really don’t blame them for sliding all over the place.
We’ll be bringing you the pictures very soon.

LFW Highlights: Pixie Lott takes a front row pew for Jaeger

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Pixie Lott, Laura Bailey and a very pregnant Rachel Stevens took front row seats for Jaeger’s Spring/Summer 11 collection, earlier this morning.

As expected the designer kept it’s collection sleek and sophisticated, sending models down the catwalk in ready to wear fashions.

Clean cut shift dresses in monochrome prints, and frocks complete with 50s style skinny belts and ruffles sauntered down the runway alongside a number of black and white separates including a shirt and trousers and tuxedo style jackets.

The colours were a range of sand, khaki mustard yellow, with added details such as hoods, zips, and leather panels, updating and modernising the collection. And later on brighter
emerald greens, ochre blue and ruby reds made an appearance.
Our favourite piece of the collection has got to be the mustard hooded taffeta cape, which will be perfect for those April showers.

LFW Highlights: Meadham Kirchhoff

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

It was a foray into a slightly scary version of Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Meadham Kirchhoff show.
Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy played and sickly sweet giant lolly pops stood around the catwalk. However, once the show started, it turned more into the Corpse Bride film set with the florals and pretty designs, which had been pushed by many designers this year, given a gothic and punk twist. Frills and lace dresses were oversized and printed and yellows and bright pinks streamed out from backstage alongside scary, yet pretty (we know it’s a contradiction) babushka doll style red dresses.

There was also a sheer harem style pants in Aztec prints as well as Peter Pan colours attached to baby doll 60s style frocks.

It was a very different collection to say the least…

LFW Highlights: David Koma

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

David Koma is well known throughout the fashion world for his eccentric designs, and last year made a name in the mainstream sector when Cheryl Cole opted for a black “disk” dress for an episode of X-Factor (like Marmite some loved it and some hated it).

However, the designer toned down his collection for SS2011 opting to send his models down the catwalk in pretty and feminine creations.

Frills, ruffles and high skirt hems paraded down the runway and colours were the traditional SS tones of peaches, creams and a few monochrome prints that gave a nod to the 60s.

But just as we were beginning to think the designer had copped out on us he took a different direction, going from glam to goth and bringing back some of his eccentric statement styles. These included wide structured black dresses adorned with metallic yellows. Gone were the soft ruffles and in came the leather and mesh.

We’re impressed Mr Koma, very impressed.

LFW Highlights: Nicole Farhi

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Nicole Farhi caused a frenzy even before she showed off her SS2011 range. She bagged herself Anna Wintour as a front row spectator. Sitting alongside other fashionistas Wintour watched as Nicole’s models strutted down the catwalk in ready to wear designs in pale and soothing colours including whites, baby pinks and mellow yellows. Dresses were flowing and silk, while jackets were the traditional summer fabric of choice: Linen.

And Nicole also stepped up her eveningwear range with sheer layered dresses complete with sequin embellishment.

Personally I like a little bit more “oomph” in a catwalk range, and to be fair there were a few metallic trouser and top creations, but it wasn’t enough. On the other hand it does hit the mark in the “ready to wear” stakes.

LFW Highlights: Abbey Clancey and Kelly Brook model for Giles Deacon

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

It was all about curves and creativity for Giles Deacon’s SS2011 show.

The designer made his LFW comeback sending curvy Kelly Brook and pregnant Abbey Clancey down the runway alongside Amber Le Bon and Agyness Deyn in floral 50s inspired frocks.

Fringing (we can see this is going to be huge next season) also made an appearance on maxi dresses and skirts, while polka dot slim fitting frocks, complete with skinny belts kept the 50s theme. But that wasn’t all with the designer also giving us a range of floaty delights, playsuits and some gorgeous billowing satin and silk frocks.

We think we may have just found our favourite collection so far.

LFW Highlights: Mulberry

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Mulberry decided to put not one, but two shows on for LFW week this season and finished with a party that attracted A-list fashionistas such as Alexa Chung.

And the designer kept the same theme displayed at its NYFW week show, which emitted a dreamy, springtime mood. Pale auburn-haired girls floated down the rose garden decorated catwalk in satin pink skirts and sky blue tie dye dresses, which gave a nod to the 80s and the romantic era.

However, the designer also gave us a few sassy creations including a multicoloured animal print dress and a beige skirt, which resembled the roses on the catwalk.

And of course lets not forget the bags, which came in all shapes and sizes from totes, to shoulder to satchels.

We’re not ashamed to admit we let ourselves drawl a teeny tiny bit over these.

LFW Highlights: Mark Fast

By Andrea Petrou on September 21st, 2010

Mark Fast has become well known in fashion circles for his barely there cobweb knits and his use of plus sized models (we still remember them marching down the AW2010 catwalk looking great).

And the designer’s SS2011 yesterday didn’t disappoint. Fast kept his statement bodycon knitted styles but ramped them up for the summer season adding glossy patent panels and creating even teeny tinier knits.

He also gave a nod to the Amazonian trend incorporating fringing, which looked like exotic coloured feathers to his staple knits. Models looked like birds of paradise in short multicoloured skirts, and we were wowed by Fast’s maxi number, which he sent down for the finale.

We want one of these dresses now….make it happen fashion fairy godmother.

LFW highlights: Erdem

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you’re into fashion then you’re almost certainly familiar with the Montreal-born designer Erdem, whose bewitching A/W 2010 floral silk dresses had the fashion world in a bit of a tizz, with every high street shop worth its’ salt trying in vain to replicate the label’s  feminine prints.

So far from Erdem we’ve seen a lot of very pretty tea dresses that you could meet the Queen in. You could be forgiven for thinking that his SS2011 collection would be rather too similar, but no, the designer’s stepped up his game. While his now near-iconic florals still have a strong presence in the collection, it’s become a lot subtler – less “little girl at a tea party”, more womanly and delicate. Bold, bright contrasting prints have been swapped for sheer lace fabrics in snowy whites in clean, beautiful shapes that are quite frankly beautiful enough to get married in. It’s a very nostalgic collection – lots of lace, full dancers’ skirts, Peter Pan collars and the kind of old-fashioned, beautiful print that your grandmother would love (and you would covet).

For me, Erdem is a strong contender to be one of the best designers that we’ve seen this year. I’d like to see River Island replicate this.

LFW highlights: Christopher Kane

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Christopher Kane showed us at Fashion Week today just exactly why he’s one of the country’s favourite current designers. The fashion world’s only just getting over his disgustingly gorgeous, flower-embroidered leather collection and then BOOM! - along comes SS2011 to make us all dribble and ache with clothes lust.

Kane’s choice of colour in his designs have all been a bit “femme fatale” and gothy of late, with lots of wine reds and dark sumptuous leathers, but he seems to have revisited old collections for inspiration for this coming Spring. For those of you that remember, his explosion onto the fashion scene was a riot of traffic-stopping neon brights, sheer lace and as much bodycon as a girl can handle. It was the one good thing to come out of 2006′s “New Rave” phase – everybody wanted one of those dresses. Now Kane’s gone back to having fun with colours similar to those that we first saw on his catwalks, but with a more grown-up twist. Instead of tight crotch-skimming dresses that are only suitable for giraffes and the under-21s, hemlines are soft, floaty and just above the knee. Very ladylike and true to the current 1960s trend – but in eye-watering neon fabrics, it’s far from old-fashioned.

If I have my way I’ll be wearing his dresses to tea parties next Spring. Which I probably won’t. But a girl can dream.

One to watch: Jennifer Witte on Etsy.com

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a good look for some new talent on crafts site Etsy, and it’s high time that I did again. Though you’re pretty much spoilt for choice perusing the site, seller Jennifer Witte, “interior design and art graduate that is crazy for anything and everything vintage” has been a stand-out name to me. The Cali-girl’s speciality is hand-painted vintage leather accessories that she hand-paints herself at home, then sells on through the site. No charity shop tat here – Jennifer’s very picky about the quality of the vintage item that she’ll work onto, so you know that there’s a lot of love going into each piece – and they’re all one-offs.

The designs that get painted onto her accessories are all very fresh, simple, girly and sweet; birds are a recurring theme in her work, as are flowers, trees and other animals. (They’re the kind of accessories that I can image  Bambi would carry, if Bambi had an interest in bags and shoes.) A personal favourite of mine is the vintage blue purse with the hand-painted whale, which is so adorable that my toes curl every time I think about it. For fans of the androgynous, leggy Brit-schoolgirl style that’s seen on the likes of Coco Sumner and Alexa Chung, who want satchels and leather shoes with a unique twist, Jennifer Witte’s Etsy shop is worth a look.

She’s also co-founder of an online Etsy store which sources beautiful vintage housewares and pretty little things. Have a peek at it here.

LFW highlights: Pam Hogg

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you want to find one designer that sums up Britain’s famous fashion eccentricity, then you don’t need to look any further than our very own Pam Hogg. Her designs still exude the same essence of punk that they did back in the eighties when she was busy playing support to Debbie Harry – they’re playful and fun, so it’s no wonder that stars such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna all love her clothes.

There was a clear futuristic, fantasy inspiration behind her designs that immediately became clear as soon as Daisy Lowe (she seems to be modelling for every designer this week, no?) stepped out onto the runway wearing what looked like a giant gold afro and a gold metallic one-piece, complete with glitter – kind of like a Trekky Foxy Brown. It was poufs, frills and lamé fabrics galore in her collection this year, as much space-age fashion that you can shake a stick at. And in true Hogg-style there was plenty of sex and skin on show – no surprise coming from a woman that has sent vajayjay-printed bodysuits down the runway before – as the tribal-looking Alice Dellal stomped the catwalk topless wearing little more than an animal-skin drum to protect her modesty. British kookiness strikes again!

So maybe it’s not an everyday look for us normal folk. Maybe don’t wear it out to the post licence or offie unless you want to get stared at. But maybe we’re all just fools and Pam Hogg is the normal one. Perhaps we would be idiots to not dress like this- I don’t know. Anyway, big love to you, Pam. You lovely weirdo.

LFW highlights: ShinyStyle loves Speedo’s collaboration with From Somewhere

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

Speedo and sustainable fashion label, From Somewhere, used LFW to give a new ethical twist on some old swimwear.

The ‘From Somewhere with Speedo’ collaboration forms part of a series of creative art and design projects commissioned by Speedo. The collection has been created from unsold stock and surplus pieces of the revolutionary Speedo LZR Racer suit. The limited edition capsule collection that is still in development, comprises a statement dress constructed purely of Speedo LZR Racer suits that will be auctioned for charity.

Following the decision of FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation), swimming’s governing body, to change the rules regarding swimsuit design and prohibit the use of full-body suits from January 2010, Speedo was  left with a surplus of the record breaking LZR Racer suit. Instead of wasting the fabric, the swimwear company teamed up with From Somewhere to create a fashion range with the unsold and surplus Speedo and Speedo LZR Racer stock.

The designs form part of a wider project to explore new ways of utilising excess stock and a more responsible solution than sending the obsolete product to landfill.

David Robinson, President of Speedo International, said: ’The Speedo LZR Racer suit has been a design icon in the sport of swimming since its launch in 2008. During its time in the pool, swimmers wearing it have broken 91 world records and achieved outstanding results.  The Speedo collaboration with From Somewhere now allows the LZR Racer to be a design icon outside of the pool.

‘As a company which places great importance in sustainability, we are thrilled to announce the collaboration with From Somewhere. Innovative projects such as this are the perfect way to responsibly dispose of the surplus stocks of the suit while extending the legacy of the Speedo LZR Racer beyond the pool and onto the catwalk. I look forward to seeing the rest of the range early next year.’

The full collection will be available next year when the dresses will be auctioned off for charity.
