Ethical Fashions
By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010
Ethical fashion is a topic we’ve been ranting about for a while now, and over the years this industry has grown from itchy, scratchy hemp trousers and tops to gorgeous ranges.
There’s ethical underwear, jewellery and H&M has also introduced an organic range to its line. Even celebrities, including Emma Watson who designed a range for People Tree, are getting in on the act.
And now there’s a new ethical fashion kid in town. Hot from successful concessions in ASOS and Topshop, Annie greeenabelle, has set up an online store offering a range of cute items from shorts to dresses made from organic and Fairtrade Certified Cotton.
And ladies who like to have a one off will be pleased to here that because the collections are not mass produced there isn’t many of each item around. On the downside you’ll have to get in there quick to get your hands on one of the fab items.
View the small gallery below for some of the collection.

Gossip, Gossip Girl, Project Runway
By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010
By Emily Borrett.
What is it with Taylor Momsen at the moment? If she’s not having a go at fellow singers or stomping around miserably in her stripper heels and leather jacket, she’s trying the patience of her fellow celebrities. The latest disgruntled celebrity is the kind, twinkly-eyed gay uncle of fashion Tim Gunn, who was appalled by her sulky behaviour when he appeared in a cameo role on the set of Gossip Girl.
Anyone who watches Project Runway as much as I do that Tim Gunn is not an easy man to anger. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen him lose his rag at a designer, ever – the closest he gets to ticking anyone off is peering over his glasses like Anne Robinson and uttering to a hopelessly disorganised designer his favourite catchphrase: “Make it work.” And even then it’s not remotely threatening.
So Momsen must have been really bad for Gunn to label the actress as “pathetic” and “a diva”. The television stylist let off steam afterwards to E! Online, saying, “She was pathetic, she couldn’t remember her lines, and she didn’t even have that many. I thought to myself, ‘Why are we all being held hostage by this brat?’”
When asked what he’d like to say to the stroppy starlet he replied, “I’d say, ‘You know, young lady, there are hundreds of thousands of girls who are just as attractive and even smarter than you. Why are you acting like this show is a huge burden on you?’” Well, you know when Tim Gunn uses the term “young lady”, that you’re in serious trouble. He should send Taylor to her room ’til she’s ready to say sorry.

While some designers sent their models down the S/S catwalk in outrageous designs Elie Tahari stuck to his classic guns.
The designer, known for his safe, yet gorgeous designs opted for neutral colours (they’re going to be huge next season ladies) but added a little bit of glam with some shimmering fabrics, which was demonstrated in his gold-coloured metallic bustier worn with a cotton viole shirt, gold-coloured metallic hot shorts and a platform wedge sandal.
As expected with any S/S 2011 collection, there were lots of shorts, which leaned more towards a sportier look than the previous cutesy styles, and like many designers he also gave a small, updated nod to the 70s with offerings such as a denim playsuit (hold on those), a range of all in ones and smart tailored trousers.

Everybody’s favourite skinheads have returned to our screen for This Is England ’86, a four-part drama that follows up from Shane Meadows’ iconic British feature film This Is England. For those of you that haven’t seen it, This Is England is a social commentary on the skinhead culture that was steadily developing in early 1980s, Thatcherite England. The film follows a troubled young boy called Shaun as he finds friends and acceptance within a group of older skinheads, is heavily influenced by older members of the group with extreme political and racist views, and eventually finds himself incredibly disillusioned with the whole thing altogether. Sounds all like a bit of a downer, but with an irresistible ska sound-track and super-sharp working-class style, it’s a bit of a must see.
Channel Four’s This Is England ’86 catches up with Shaun, Woody and the others a couple of years down the line. Shaun’s lost touch with the others and switched his Doc Martens for a school uniform, but his old group of friends’ outfits just get better and better. Braces and turned-up jeans have been swapped for ultra-sharp, 1960s inspired suits in the case of characters Woody and Milky, whilst Woody’s sweetheart Lol’s skin-girl style has taken on a new grown-up look. Instead of number one shaves, braces and rat’s tails, think classic British style – cropped hair, Fred Perry, crisp shirts in ginghams and checks, Doc Martens and 60s-style pea coats are essential to nailing this look.

Designer Fashions, designer pick of the week, Designers, dresses, Events, Gallery, New York Fashion Week - Runway

As Andrea said before, Fashion Week in New York is coming to a glitzy, air-kissing end and it’s all very sad. As a send-off to one of the world’s biggest fashion events (for now, anyway- it’ll be back, girls), ShinyStyle is bringing you all the highlights from the past week. So far we’ve celebrated the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from both Tommy Hilfiger and Diane Von Fustenberg, but now it’s Mulberry’s turn for a bit of Shiny-Love.
It was clear from the get-go that Mulberry’s SS2011 collection was going to a girl’s dream – the floor space surrounding the runway was decorated to look like a lily pond, with huge peachy lilypads and hot-pink flowers scattered across the floor. The mood of the show had a dreamy, springtime “pretty girl in a pretty dress walking in a pretty garden” feel to it that reflected the clothes perfectly. The milky-skinned, auburn-haired Mulberry girls were sent stomping down the catwalk in full-skirted, ladylike creations in sugary tones of pink and sky blue. Go away Christmas, I’m ready for my spring wardrobe now..

Diane Von Furstenberg’s designs alway stand out at NYFW. The designs are soft, yet the prints bold and this season the designer didn’t disappoint.
Giving a nod to the 60s, which was perhaps driven by the current Mad Men trend, DVF’s prints were monochrome, colourful in small and large blocks and featured on loose jackets, 60s shift dresses, Capri pants, jumpsuits and swing back jackets.
And the colours were just as bold as the prints with purples, golds, tan and lime, running through the collection.
Aside from the 60s VonFurstenberg also made the Grecian Goddess theme huge part of her collection, with floaty dresses complete with tassells in lame fabrics and accessories with silver beading.

New York Fashion Week - Gossip
By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010
With New York Fashion Week drawing to a sad close we thought it was about time we gave a little nod to some of the trends that have come from the catwalks so far. So we’ve decided to pick out some of our favourite highlights. First up is of course Tommy Hilfiger who celebrated his 25 anniversary with a celeb fuelled party (if you missed all the pictures from this click here).
And his designs were just as amazing. The designer stuck to a red/white/blue theme, which was worked into cotton tweed shorts suits, or a navy and white bow-bra with a red, pleated mini-kilt.
And he didn’t forget his preppy roots either. Cream oversized cricket sweaters trimmed with red, and of course the classic mac was transformed right into Hilfiger SS2011 style, graced the catwalk. Pleated skirts, long, slinky silk jersey gowns, featuring cut-outs or bow-ties at the back were all little treats we can probably expect to see channelled on the highstreet next year.

While there’s a number of autumn trends to be looking forward to, one must have this season is of course hats.
Beenie, beret, bobble or Fedora, any trend goes this season. But the key point with this trend is accessories. Team up fedora hats with feathers and beret’s and beenies with booches for this seasons ultimate look.

Fashion Face Off, Gallery, X Factor
By Andrea Petrou on September 14th, 2010
With Dannii Minogue still on maternity leave celebrity judges are kicking up a storm on the X-Factor.
Last week the majority said you prefered guest judge Natalie Imbruglia’s style over resident’s Cheryl, but will she still be out in the cold this week when we pit her against this weekend’s helper Pixie Lott?
As Pixie fans will already know, this singer’s style is more quirky than chic. She’s well known for her flat boots and knee high socks, and most recently has been channelling the stockings look, which is a favourite style of Taylor Momsen.
In contrast Cheryl’s style is more conventional and “polished”, with the starlet opting for little dresses, smart shorts and heels.
But who do you think is the most stylish,? View the gallery and then vote below to let us know.

We were unable to bring you the latest celebrity news yesterday due to a pesky illness (and no it wasn’t a panic attack over not finding those new shoes in our size). But we’re back and ready to bring you up to date with everything that’s been happening this week.
And what better way to begin than with all the latest news from the MTV VMA that took place over the weekend. As expected the music elite were out in force showing off their frocks. Lady Gaga of course set the fashion world talking when she turned up in a red tattered style dress made from animal flesh, complete with matching wedges. She later changed into a medieval style frock, complete with a matching statement headpiece.
Katy Perry also took a small leaf out of Gaga’s book. opting for an outrageous, yet pretty monochrome frock, with a lace top half that didn’t leave much to the imagination. Ashley Greene also went for this colour combo, in a much more toned down strapless frock.
See below for all the MTV VMA star style of the night.

Celebrity Style, New York Fashion Week - Gossip
By Andrea Petrou on September 14th, 2010
The fashion elite have preened, pouted and donned their best heels for a range of various events at NY Fashion Week either sitting in the front rows of shows or tuning up for parties.
Sarah Jessica Parker turned up at the Diane Von Furstenberg show looking her usual glam self in a cute off the shoulder cherry print gypsy dress, while Nicky Hilton opted for an on-trend leopard print mini dress for the same event. They were joined in the front row by fashion queen Anna Wintour who opted for a classic print maxi dress teamed up with a mac and pearl necklace.
Carmen Electra showed off her, er, assets in a striped dress at Zac Posen while Jennifer Lopez went for a funky black dress and knee high patent boots for Tommy Hilfiger’s 25th anniversary party. She was joined by Kelly Osbourne who opted for a 60s print dress and Mad Men star Christina Hendricks who showed off her curves in a black plunge neck frock.
Rumer Willis also joined the fashion parade at the same event in a classic satin blue long dress.
Milla Jovovich also made an appearance at NYFW posing for photographers in a long blue top, leggings and cage gladiators.
See all the NY Fashion Week glamour so far in the gallery below.

If you haven’t managed to quite retain your bikini-body now that the sun’s gone away, and you’re feeling less than a goddess, don’t worry. As the season shifts from summer into the wintery months a new sexiness begins – party dresses, glamour, and yes, sexy undies.
And if you’re like me and feel endlessly perked up by putting on a pair of beautifully made undies (no Primark here, no sir) then you’ll be pleased to know about the launch of the website GlamorousAmorous.com, which kindly put all of your dream lingerie designers together on one big lovely site. GlamorousAmorous features stock from the very best shops available, which include Mimi Holliday, couture lingerie designers Strumpet & Pink, Maxine’s of London and my personal favourite, Lascivious.
Ideas on beauty and femininity have changed over the last season and designers are no longer creating lingerie with Kate Moss in mind. GlamorousAmorous have catered to this by providing tips for fittings, whether you’re a skinny, straight-up-and-down girl or inundated with curves that Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks would kill for. It’s all about accentuating your most feminine features at the moment, be they your breasts, waists, legs or hips. And GA is here to help.
True, some of the pieces on the site don’t come cheap. But really beautiful, well-made underwear never does. So what I say is, start writing your Christmas list now and hand it over to your boyfriend so that he can start saving up. After all, there’s something in it for him too.

You would have thought, what with Mercedes Benz fashion week going on in New York, and the re-opening party of Chanel’s boutique store in Soho, NYC, that no one would have dared put a fashion foot wrong. And certainly not Heidi Klum. Well, she’s all surprised us with a complete stonker (or stinker, tee hee) of an outfit at the final catwalk show for Project Runway. The same can be said for fashion designer Betsey Johnson.. more of that in the gallery below.
Less surprisingly was that the Brits have been letting the side down as usual. And it’s the same bevy of glamour girls and soap actresses. Jordan and Tracey Emin, I’m looking at you. You put old Blighty to shame.
If you want to put in your two cents about this week’s shameful dressers, vote in the poll below and leave your comments. We want to know which turkey of an outfit gets your vote.

When I started secondary school, you could tell who was cool and who wasn’t by what kind of school bag they had. If you had a shoulder bag, you were cool. If you had a backpack, and wore both straps on your shoulders (as your mum instructed, so you didn’t get a bad back) you weren’t. And yes, I was stuck with the backpack – it was so heavy that I walked like one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I still, to this day, blame that backpack for being so terminally unpopular for the first three years of high school.
But suddenly, a new breed of backpack has appeared. It’s lightweight, chic and a bit of a wink to the 90s “Clueless era” when fresh, preppy schoolgirl style ruled. And when it’s being championed by the likes of Daisy Lowe, the Olsens and The City’s Whitney Port, you know you’re onto a good thing.
Even Chanel’s making them – in lush, buttery-looking quilted leather with the iconic double C emblem. Back to school chic has never been so good. Check the gallery below for some of the best back-candy around at the moment.
