Get a room, guys: David and Victoria Beckham’s steamy new ad for fragrance “Intimately Yours”

By Andrea Petrou on September 10th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Dave and Vickz have unveiled the racy new  promo for their Mr & Mrs fragrance, “Intimately Yours”. The short film clip, which you can have a good perv over here, shows the superstar duo getting into a lift, sharing a very breathy and passionate kiss, then emerging from the lift again looking a bit rumpled and hot under the collar. Ooh, matron.

It’s not the first time the star couple have flaunted their sex life (and David’s abs) to the public – who could forget their husband-and-wife photoshoot for Giorgio Armani in their undies? Or James Corden’s parody of it too, for that matter. This is one couple that likes to let everyone know what’s going on in the bedroom.

The scent is said to “capture the essence of David and Victoria’s passion and the power of their relationship.” And boy, does it. The promo couldn’t have come at a better time for the Beckhams – with all the recent rumours of David’s affairs and Victoria’s neuroses concerning their marriage, the video practically screams, “Look! We still really fancy each other!”

Awww, you guys… still. Get a room.

Spotted US special: Sarah Jessica Parker, Lindsay Lohan and Katie Holmes

By Andrea Petrou on September 10th, 2010

Our fashion foray has taken us across the pond to the US today. Earlier this morning we gave you all the fashion gossip from Chanel’s boutique opening in New York’s Soho so we thought we’d continue the trend by giving you a US spotted special.
Throughout the past week, stars have hit the pavements dressed up and down, badly and commendably.

Gwen Stefani was definitely the latter when she was spotted in LA wearing a long tee teamed up with casual black jeans and accessorised with a belt, as was Victoria Beckham who wowed in a cute green dress at LA airport.
Unfortunately not everyone looked as good as these two ladies. Lindsay Lohan took the 80s look a little bit too far with her ripped jeans and checked shirt on a day out shopping, while Miley Cyrus’s knee high socks didn’t really rock our boats (there’s a way to wear this trend Miley).

Back to the good fashion looks, Katie Holmes looked hot in a little printed mini dress and black tights while Sarah Jessica Parker rocked the 80s colour trend in red jeans and a purple top.

See all the US star style in the gallery below and tell us who you think is the best dressed by leaving your comments in the box below.

AW Trend Alert: Gilets

By Andrea Petrou on September 9th, 2010

Love them or loathe them gilets have flown right into the 21st century from the 80s, thanks to the emergence of the fur and leather trends that have been showcased by a range of designers .

Burberry vouldbe to blame for the reintroduction of the aviator look, while we could also point the finger at Marc Jacobs for all his fur festishes.

Those who love these little items of  clothing however, will rejoice in the fact that this year these come in a range of  different fabrics symbolising different trends. The highstreet is packed full of leather gilet’s symbolising the biker trend, while denim gilets are still lurking around from the summer season.

The key way to wear this trend is to layer up. Wear over a tee for the not so cold days and team up over cute dresses to create the 40s boho look. We’ve picked out our top five.

Get the look: Mad Men 60s style

By Andrea Petrou on September 9th, 2010

It’s very rare that the fashion industry takes inspiration from TV but one show that’s driven some of this season’s trends is 60s show Mad Men. The advertising programme has hit the headlines thanks to it’s glamour and style, which covers the period from 1960 to 1963. As it was the pre mini skirt and pre hippy era, the fashions are still formal and the classic feminine shape of the fifties was all the rage.

Joan Harris’ (née Holloway) style is typical of the era with curve hugging dresses that show off her ideal late 50s to 60s figure, while Peggy Olsen is more girly, opting for a more innocent style of dress in gingham and tweed fabrics and high neck cardigans. And Betty Draper dresses in the style of a typical 60s “Desperate Housewife” in full skirts, petticoats, scarves and body hugging dresses on a night out.

Pixie Lott, Gwyneth Paltrow and Thandie Newton wow at Fashion Night Out

By Andrea Petrou on September 9th, 2010

Designers and celebrities were out in force last night to celebrate Vogue’s Fashion Night Out, which saw the magazine partner with designers, department stores and high street chains to create a shopping night to remember not just for the rich and famous, but for members of the public too.

Gwyneth Paltrow turned up to the event in a cute white shirt, which she teamed up with black trousers and cage heeled gladiators while Claudia Schiffer went for an on-trend metallic trend skirt for the event.

Pixie Lott went for what now seems to be her trademark knee high socks, which she teamed up with an on-trend aviator leather jacket and and a LBD. She was joined by Sophie Ellis Bextor who looked warm and cosy in a classic black coat and Jameela Jamil who brightened up the night in an orange strapless maxi dress.
Thandie Newton and Laura Bailey channelled the nude trend. However, while Thandie went for a super short dress, Laura played it safe with a two piece number.

Lady Gaga’s “meat” photoshoot for Japanese Vogue gets PETA’s knickers in a twist

By Andrea Petrou on September 8th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

PETA’s all in an indignant tizz again, and this time it’s Lady Gaga wot done it.

The singer/performance artist/nutcase was photographed for Japanese Hommes Vogue in a bikini. Which itself sounds alright, except for the eensy detail that she was photographed in a MEAT bikini. She’s going more above and beyond in her duty to be even more mental than Michael Jackson.

But is it art? PETA doesn’t seem to think so. Relations between the singer and the animal rights group seem to have soured – where at one point bosses were begging Gaga to be a spokesperson for their “I’d Rather Go Naked than Wear Fur” campaign , they now seem to feel a bit let down.

President of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, said on the matter:

“No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal .. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for, they achieved it.” Ouch.

Looks like Gaga’s got some serious kissing up to PETA to do if she wants to get back in their good books. What do you think of the ad campaign? Is it artistic or in bad taste? Comment below to let us know your thoughts.

Get the look: Look like The Like

By Andrea Petrou on September 8th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If super-girl group The Like haven’t yet come to your attention, they soon will. The Californian four-piece are quite unlike any other girl band around at the moment. If you’re thinking along the lines of The Saturdays, don’t – think more along the lines of the Ronettes and the Shangri-Las, but with drums and guitars.

Their jangly melodies and old-school harmonies have scored a big hit both in the states and in over here in old Blighty. Lately the girls, Elizabeth, Tennessee, Laena and Annie’s have been packing out crowds more suited to a party in 1960s King’s Road than 21st century London. Instead of opting for today’s usual fare of crotch-skimming skirts and boob-flashing garments, The Like’s wardrobe is a cheeky wink towards the glamour of days past when women like Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot and Edie Sedgwick were the most stylish people in the world.

What with the abundance of vintage available online and in shops now, the Like’s look (tongue-twister) is an easy one to achieve and carry off without looking like an idiot. If you’ve got long hair, pile it up on top of your head in a messy, modern beehive or keep it straight with a blunt fringe. If you’ve got short hair, keep it sleek and close to the head like Edie Sedgwick -all the better for carrying off spectacular chandelier earrings.

When it comes to dressing like The Like, keep your eyes peeled for details and shapes that will give your outfits a 1960s polish. When looking for dresses, shift shapes are a fail-safe way to work the trend, especially if you’ve got the pins for them. Look out for Peter Pan-style collars, Breton tops and, like our favourite Californian girls, keep all of your bottoms high-waisted.

One final note – don’t forget the fake lashes.

See beneath for some of my favourite vintage and 1960s-inspired buys if you want to steal the girls’ style.

Fashion Crush Top 5: Five movies you should dress like

By Andrea Petrou on September 8th, 2010

By Emily Borrett

The first person whose style I ever truly loved was Ariel from the Little Mermaid – I wanted her cool shell bikini, despite only being about five – and then a little later on in life the Japanese twins from the Simpsons, Sherri and Terri.  I stand by that still – anyone who thinks it isn’t cool to wear a shell bikini or match their clothes and accessories to their hair colour is wrong. Little television addict that I was when I was a child (apparently I used to come home from school and mournfully wail to my mother that I “hadn’t been watching”), it would be fair to say that film and television has had a hefty influence on my style over the years. And admittedly, some former fashion crushes of mine have not stood the test of time. Two examples of the most cringe-worthy that come to mind were my obsession with Columbia in the Rocky Horror Picture Show many years ago -which lasted far too long and caused me to dress like a fat burlesque dancer – and my Disney Channel phase at the age of about 9, when I really dug Lizzie McGuire’s “neon brights and pedal pushers” look.

Wardrobe horrors aside, there have been some pretty iconic dressers in movie history that I still take a lot of inspiration from when I’m getting dressed in the morning. All of the women listed below look dope. All of their films are super-stylish, and if you haven’t seen them, you should, if not just for the clothes.

5. MIA WALLACE IN “PULP FICTION”

Uma Thurman’s character in this movie is like a monochrome queen. White shirt, black capris, milky skin and the sleekest black bob in history (soz, Anna Wintour). Classic styling, classic Chanel colours – she’s like a weird fashion cat that I want to catch and then keep prisoner in my house, so that it can teach me how to dress well and dance like it’s the 50s.

It’s a completely different kind of sexy to the kind that was at the time all over the covers of Vogue, in the form of super-women such as Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. Instead of whipping out her legs or boobs, Mia Wallace draws you in with her hypnotic eyes and the smile of a cat who just got the five-dollar milkshake. And so she should, it’s a good look for her. I’m depressed that my bob will never look like that.

4. MADONNA IN “DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN”

Hey guys, remember when Madonna was really, really, really cool? In the eighties, way before she started to look like Popeye and show off her crotch all the time, Madonna was in a movie called Desperately Seeking Susan, in which she  got to act cool on screen for a couple hours and basically play herself. Except in the film she’s meant to be someone called Susan, not Madonna.

All the biggest fashions in the past couple of years like leather, lace, sheer clothing and chunky gothic jewellery – “Susan” wore it first. She did all the things you (probably) only dream of doing, like hanging out in weird cabaret bars, sleeping with the Mafia and getting arrested for trying to bunk cabs. You know, bad girl stuff. And she got to wear Jimi Hendrix’s jacket while she was at it too. Despite the film’s silly plot and dialogue it’s one of my comfort blanket films – if you’re into eighties and new wave fashion you should probably watch it.

3. CHER IN “CLUELESS”

“So what did you do in school today, Cher?” “Well… I broke in my purple clogs.” I love to watch Clueless every few months or so because it’s like a warm bubblebath for my brain. It leaves me feeling girly, bubbleheaded and happy for at least a week afterwards. I like the 90s soundtrack and the amount of brightly-coloured plaid they all wear (both the preppy and the British Heritage trend nailed in one, well done, Dion and Cher).

Cher deserves to be on this list not simply because she was rocking knee high socks and loafers way before the likes of Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe, but for her sheer dedication to fashion. She really fought for her plight – it’s not many girls that have a computer programme to decide their outfits each morning. And it’s certainly not many girls that have the chutzpah to argue with a gun-toting mugger when they think their Aliya dress is in danger of getting dirty.

2. GRACE JONES IN “A VIEW TO A KILL”

The movie itself wasn’t the greatest James Bond of all time, and certainly not the most stylish one – that honour should go to one of the sixties ones – but Grace Jones deserves to be on this list because she’s fiercer than a shaved mongoose, and better than any of the big-haired blonde heroines that got to snog James at the end. Also, I don’t want her to beat me up.

I have yet to see someone that can rock Lennon shades, a buzz cut and hooded sportswear quite the way that Miss Jones can. The likes of Lady Gaga, Kelis and Amber Rose haven’t got anything on this woman.

1. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY IN “BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S”

To not put Holly Golightly at number one of this list would be like ignoring a massive, Chanel-clad elephant in the corner of the room. Queen of the up-do, costume jewellery and the trusty little black dress, it’s a style that is still massively referenced nearly fifty years on. You don’t need to look like a film star to dress like Holly Golightly – though it helps – which is the genius of the styling in this film. All you need to get a little of Audrey Hepburn’s style is a sharp black dress and shades, and voila – fashion magic. The beauty of her clothes is in the simplicity.

These are just some of my personal favourites – if you’ve got a cinema fashion favourite that you want to add in the comment box, do it! ShinyStyle wants to know who your fashion crushes are.

A/W Trend Alert: Poetry and romance

By Andrea Petrou on September 7th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

If you want to stay on-trend this season but are less than convinced by some of this year’s more unexpected trends (shearling and Princess Diana chic, I’m talking to you), don’t worry. You don’t have to go out in Christmas jumpers and yeti boots if you don’t want to – there is an alternative, and it gives me girly, fluttery feelings in my tummy.

Femininity is back in a big way in the fashion world, and you can see this girl-love on the catwalks. The world and its’ wife has a crush on Mad Men pin-up Christina Hendricks, Lara Stone’s breasts are in every ad campaign and waists are at the height of waspishness.  But if you don’t have a figure like Marilyn Monroe, that’s okay too – you don’t need a super-feminine body to be super-feminine. It was all old-fashioned romance and nostalgia in the collections of designers such as Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Erdem this season, who championed faded florals, dusty blues, greens and pinks and sheer fabrics to show off a cheeky hint of skin. Think high tea, bird cages, china dolls and antiques – all very pretty, very feminine and very, very British.

If you want a little more romance in your wardrobe, it’s a very wearable look that translates easily from the runway to the street. You don’t have to sweep down the road in a floor-length Victorian gown to make the trend work – keep an eye out for dusty shades, smock tops, antique jewellery and wispy fabrics. Check out the gallery below for some of my favourite pieces to buy in the high street.

A/W Trend alert: Opulence

By Andrea Petrou on September 7th, 2010

Ladies, get ready to preen and pout, because this season’s going out look is all about decadence. That’s right, the opulence trend is making a comeback.

This decadent trend takes it’s influence from the Victorian era incorporating lace, jewels, velvet, feathers and brocade and the more detailing the better.  Paul Costelloe, Miu Miu, Christopher Kane and Max Mara were just some of the designers who sent their models down the a/w 2010 catwalk in this trend.

So how do you wear this regal style?

Firstly consider the colours. Jewel tones, mauves, black and berry are all key in this trend, as are accessories, which should be piled on. Think belts, headbands, earrings and chunky necklaces and bracelets.

We’ve picked out our top five key pieces for this trend.

Wayne Rooney won’t try to save his marriage: We look at more cheating sportsmen

By Andrea Petrou on September 7th, 2010

The Wayne Rooney scandal continues but instead of breaking down and apologising to his wife the arrogant football star is making it even worse for himself.

According to reports the player, nicknamed Shrek, has told friends he will not try to save his marriage to wife Coleen if she decides she wants a divorce (erm Wayne have you looked in the mirror, you’re not going to get much better than her).

The couple’s relationship is in trouble after it emerged that Wayne, 24, cheated on Coleen with a prostitute while she was pregnant with their son, Kai.

‘Wayne is not prepared to take any s**t off the wife and her family, not least because they’re all living a very nice life off the back of his talent,’ a source told the Daily Mail.

‘If she can’t handle it and it’s over, so be it. Seems he thinks he can pretty much do what the hell he likes because they’d all be nothing without him.’

The couple’s relationship hit the rocks at the weekend after 21-year-old prostitute Jennifer Thompson told the Sunday Mirror she would meet the multi-millionaire footballer for sex in hotels.

She claims he would paid her £1,200 each time, after meeting him in a casino in June 2009, and would chase her with ‘sex texts’.

Of course Wayne isn’t the first to cheat on his missus. It seems the football world thinks they can do what they want when they want, no matter how much they hurt their other halves.

Lanky, if I wasn’t a footballer I’d be a virgin (we have to agree with you there Pete), player Peter Crouch broke Abbey Clancey’s heart when it emerged he’d slept with a prostitute while Ashley Cole made a pigs ear of his marriage after sleeping with a hairdresser and sending those texts. And the list continues. Frank Lampard cheated on Ellen Rives, Tiger Woods cheated with almost anyone and everything, and John Terry decided to go one step further sleeping with a colleague’s missus (Jeremy Kyle anyone).

We’ve put together a gallery of the two timing players. All together now…boooo.

Spotted: Lily Allen, Pixie Geldof and Christine Bleakley

By Andrea Petrou on September 7th, 2010

While soap and TV Stars were strutting their stuff at the TV Choice awards last night, designers and other celebs were attending a huge range of other events.

Vivienne Westwood, donned one her statement eccentric outfits, consisting of graffiti print trousers and a pinstripe blazer for  ELLE’s 25th anniversary party. She was joined at the event by Pixie Geldof who looked gorgeous in a stripe mini dress, on-trend biker jacket and  red wedges, alongside Henry Holland.  Ben Grimes also made an appearance in a cute pale silver mini strapless dress with bra cup detailing.

Across the city Lily Allen showed off her baby bump in a stunning black Spanish style dress with floral detailing at the Tamara Drewe UK film premiere held at the Odeon, Leicester Square, while Gemma Arteton went for a white maxi strapless dress.

However, while some celebs partied, others had to work. Chrisitine Bleakley was spotted arriving at the ITV studios in skinny jeans and grey wedges in the early hours of the morning to begin her stint on new ITV show Daybreak. And Fearne Cotton also set out to work in a cute black dress, which she teamed up with tights and boots.

All the soap star style from the TV Choice Awards

By Andrea Petrou on September 7th, 2010

Black was the order of the night as celebrities hit the red carpet at London’s Dorchester Hotel for the annual TV Choice awards.

Kerry Katona showed off too much of her new body, and celebrated her 30th birthday in a slinky black dress, with a split and short front while Suzanne Shaw also opted for this colour wearing a short black ruffled dress for the event.

Holly Willoughby dressed up the carpet in a classic wrap-front velvet LBD, which she completed with a touch of bright red lipstick as did Emmerdale’s Sammy Winward who stood out with a chic black jumpsuit and classic court heels. Other women in black were Danielle who chose an asymmetric LBD with an unfortunately unclassy thigh-high slit and Lacey Turner who did us proud in a cute little tea dress.

Samia Smith and Lucy Pargeter brought a pop of colour to the TV Choice line, wearing coral and silver mini frocks, while Michelle Keegan looked stunning in a blue mini frock. Michelle Mone also went for this colour donning a blue satin maxi dress for the event.
