BAFTA 2011 red carpet: Kimberley Walsh wears Ashley Isham

By Andrea Petrou on February 13th, 2011

The red carpet frenzy has already begun with A-listers braving the rain for the BAFTAs.
First up on our best dressed list is Kimberley Walsh who looks absolutely stunning in an on-trend pale gold sleeved dress made specially for her by Ashley Isham.

With her loose wavy hair and bright red lipstick we think this starlet really stands out.

NY Fashion Week: Jason Wu

Jason Wu A/W 2011-2012

Jason Wu’s new A/W 2011-12 collection just reminded me of why exactly he’s one of my favourite designers. In short, it was the kind of collection that dreams are made of. Built up mainly out of beautifully structured basics, and elaborated upon with prints, embellishment and Miu Miu-esque bows, the collection managed to encompass both the chic spirit of European fashion and the high-octane power and edginess of New York fashion.

As soon as the first look came down the runway, it was obvious that Wu had knocked it right out of the park yet again; the model appeared in the perfect pair of low-slung tailored trousers and tuxedo jacket, a sweet monochrome print on the shirt beneath. With an industrial grey lace-trimmed coat slung casually over the model’s shoulders, and a black silk bow tied at the shirt collar, this was girlish androgyny at its best. What followed after this first flawlessly put-together look was a long stream of perfect separates which we predict will become wardrobe staples – sharply high-necked, stiff-collared printed shirts, neat A-line skirts, bows at the collar and high-waisted dress pants. One of our absolute favourites out of his more casual looks was the leather A-line skirt/high-necked lace blouse combination, which, teamed with a vintage-esque monochrome handbag and red metallic heels was a knockout. ASOS, if you’re reading – please, please, please copy these pieces ASAP.

When it came to formalwear in Wu’s 2011-12 collection, lace, feathers and lavish embellishment were all key themes. With simple tailored skirts, jackets and blazers all adorned in the same extravagant costume jewellery detail on the hemlines and shoulders, Wu has basically single-handedly reinvented tailored dressing for women. Like many other designers this season, he favoured lace in both casual and formalwear – lace trims running up the sides of sleeves and legs were seen everywhere in this collection, bringing each look together smoothly and cohesively.

So basically, we absolutely adore this A/W collection from Jason Wu. To check out highlights from his NY Fashion Week show, check out the gallery above.

It’s pre-awards ceremonies frenzy at the moment. As the music industry’s brightest celebrate the impending Grammys in Los Angeles, some of Britain’s stars of small and silver screen went out to party in London’s Mayfair to celebrate the upcoming BAFTA awards, one of Britain’s most important award ceremonies in the entertainment industry.

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson looked dainty and pixie-ish in a simplistic navy silk button-up dress, which set off her new cropped hair and simple make-up perfectly. Also spotted leaving the event was film’s new wondergirl Hailee Steinfield, who’s been wowing critics with her performance in the new western blockbuster True Grit. We can’t comment on her acting, but we can certainly comment on her dress – a beautiful little black dress with white origami detail on the sleeve. How depressing that someone so much younger than us should dress so much better than us too.

Fashion car-crash/genius Paloma Faith was also there for the swanky party in Mark’s Club, looking typically mental/amazing as usual in a leopardprint coat, floor-skimming red fringed skirt and My Fair Lady-esque hat. It’s always a pleasure seeing what she’ll wear out next.

Meanwhile, just down the road, opera babe Catherine Jenkins was spotted leaving Mahiki with her rugby boyf Gethin Jones, looking a bit like Audrey Hepburn in a simple black skater dress which showed off her enviable figure perfectly.  Saturdays’ singer Rochelle was also seen outside the Mayfair Hotel for Aston Merrigold’s birthday casually flaunting a quilted Chanel bag and little black dress. Lucky thing.

Spotted at the Pre-Grammy Gala: Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne, Kelly Rowland and Leona Lewis

While the fashion glitterati are all out in full force at the moment for NY Fashion Week, all of the music industry’s brightest were out in Los Angeles last night for the Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons honouring David Geffen (try saying that with a mouthful of chips). Some legendary LA veterans were there tonight, such as writer Jackie Collins and diva queen Whitney Houston, looking every inch the Hollywood party-girls in shimmering cocktail dresses, but there were also plenty of young whippersnappers out as well showing their fashion credentials.

Representing old Blighty were Kelly and Sharon Osboune and popstrel extraordinaire Leona Lewis. Both of the Osbourne women looked at their goth best in lace dresses – Sharon opted for an elegant midi-length dress with a curve-hugging skirt, while Kelly kept her lace sheerer and her hemline higher to show off her teensy new body. Meanwhile, we’re still undecided on Leona’s outfit. She’s already not known for always getting it right at events (remember when she tried to be Gaga?) but we’re struggling to decide whether her fluorescent two-piece was on-trend or just plain horrible. Whatever verdict we come to, we’ll say this – her fringe looked nice.

Meanwhile the Stateside stars showed exactly why they’re the industry’s biggest divas. Jennifer Hudson appeared for the paps wearing a gorgeous figure hugging dress (someone has obviously been dieting, BTW) that showed off her curves to perfection. She completed the Monroe-esque look with a shock of red lipstick and vintage-style bangs; we hope she keeps this look forever. Katy Perry was gorgeous as usual in an extravagant sweetheart necklined gown, but looked a little more sombre than normal, especially with her poker-straightened hair. Bring back the blue wigs please.

Kelly Rowland and Miley Cyrus were polar opposites last night, with Kelly looking classy and beautiful in a Grecian draped blue gown, whilst Miley opted for the dodgiest shiny dress we’ve ever seen, complete with fishnet cut-outs and PVC. Put it away Miley, you’re only twelve.

NY Fashion Week: Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang A/W 2011-12

If Paris Fashion Week is the mecca of elegant couture, and Milan Fashion Week the source of all high-octane glamour, then New York Fashion Week is the home of cool. And it doesn’t come much cooler than the gritty, slick designs of Alexander Wang, whose shows we absolutely always look forward to the moment when NYFW rolls around again.

The young designer exploded into our consciousness a few seasons ago with his tough, punk aesthetic. Did you rock a fishtail plait last year, covet a studded leather jacket or embrace sportwear as the pinnacle of cool? If so then you’ve got Mr. Wang to thank for it, whose raw and modern take on rock and roll has turned fashion around. Following his last Spring/Summer show, which was an unexpected collection of laid-back separates and a complete departure from his signature look, we breathed a sigh of relief to see him return to what he does best at NY Fashion Week yesterday.

The models were definitely dressed for a cold and rainy New York winter as they stomped down the runway in an interesting mix of quilted leather, knitted black and grey ponchos, metal jewellery and fur collars. There was a pretty balance between hard and soft in the textures and shapes used in the collection – we especially loved his buttery, black biker-girl jacket with a huge fur collar teamed up with beautifully tailored silk trousers. Is this what Joan Jett would look like if she grew up and got a job in an art gallery in the Big Apple? We hope so.

Though the collection was more subtle than some of Wang’s past collections (we didn’t see a single stud anywhere), there were still plenty of his signature quirk and charm in the accessories. Fur headbands, metal bracelets and fluffy shoes may only be for the brave, but at Fashion Week it was pure New York perfection.
