Jessica Simpson wants women of all ages to wear her clothes.

By Andrea Petrou on March 28th, 2011

The singer-and-actress – whose fashion empire is set to make $1 billion this year – says the clothes and accessories are aimed at a whole range of females as well as a variety of occasions.

She told WWD: “This will give the consumer something to dress up in, to feel like a lady, to feel sophisticated, yet it has some sort of funk and flair to it. It has a lot of style to it. It’s not your average suit or skirt. It has lots of fun details. We wanted to change things up for the everyday working girl who wants to feel her age. It could be for a girl’s first job, or an internship. She could be in her 20s, 30s, even 40s. My mom would wear it, and she’s over 50.”

Despite her busy career, the 30-year-old beauty says her fashion range will always come first because it has made her a role model.

She said: “It all works together. I really don’t look at myself as just one thing. I’m kind of scattered and like to have my hands in a lot of different projects. It makes me who I am. It’s what defines me. What I wear, what I sing, the songs I write, the projects I choose all have to represent Jessica Simpson.

I wouldn’t take certain jobs if they were to take away from the positive role model that the Jessica Simpson Collection has allowed me to establish.because this is my number-one priority.”

Elizabeth Taylor’s final resting place of rest lies next to the ‘Angel of Memory’.

By Andrea Petrou on March 28th, 2011

Elizabeth Taylor’s final resting place of rest lies next to the ‘Angel of Memory’.

The 79-year-old actress passed away from congestive heart failure last Wednesday and was laid to rest at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles the following day in accordance with Jewish custom.

The ‘Cleopatra’ star’s body is now in a crypt adjacent to a 10 foot tall white marble statue of the angel, named as the ‘Angel of Memory’ by ‘The Art Guide of the Forest Lawn Park’.

The 70-year-old statue is located in the Great Mausoleum’s Memorial Terrace in its Hall of Memory and was crafted from imported marble by Italian sculptor Ermenegildo Luppi.

Other stars buried at the Great Mausoleum include Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and Elizabeth’s close friend Michael Jackson.

The funeral for Elizabeth was attended by her four children and 10 grandchildren, while fans gathered at the gates of the cemetery to pay their respects to the star.

It is believed a public memorial will take place to the star in the coming weeks.

In the meantime Elizabeth’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been covered with floral tributes to her.

One mourner even matched his bouquet to the colour of her ‘unique’ eyes.

The unnamed man said: “We asked the florist to select flowers that would commemorate the colour of her eyes. We all know her eyes were a unique violet colour.”

Carey Mulligan is dating British singer Marcus Mumford

By Andrea Petrou on March 28th, 2011

Carey Mulligan is dating British singer Marcus Mumford.

The ‘Never Let Me Go’ actress is said to be enjoying a romantic weekend with the Mumford and Sons folk musician in Buckinghamshire, south east England, after flying to the UK from her New York base to be with him.

The pair were spotted getting friendly at an intimate gig in Nashville last month and have reportedly been spending time together since in the 24-year-old singer’s London home, as well as enjoying a break together in the Orkney Islands in Scotland last week.

A source told The Daily Mail newspaper: “Marcus invited Carey to watch him play a secret show in the basement of his friend Mike Harris’s home in Nashville. She sat in the front row and while he was singing Marcus looked down at Carey and she blushed. It was clear they had chemistry.

“Afterwards they went to the City House restaurant and dined with friends but they sat together and acted like a couple.”

Now the 25-year-old actress – who has previously dated ‘Transformers’ star Shia LeBoeuf and was last month linked to actor Eddie Redmayne – is said to want to see even more of her new beau and may even accompany him and his band when they tour the US.

The source said: “Carey’s hoping they can spend more time together when Marcus flies back to America next month for a major tour with his band.

“He’s hired a vintage train instead of a tour bus and has asked Carey to join him for the trip. It’s early days but they seem to enjoy each other’s company.”

Herve Leger says todays models are uninspiring

By Andrea Petrou on March 28th, 2011

Herve Leger says he could no longer show his collections at Fashion Week because he finds today’s models uninspiring.

The designer – who used the likes of Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista in his high-profile presentations during the 90s – says the current crop of beauties aren’t in the same league and wouldn’t do his clothes justice.

He told the Daily of Lagerfeld: “If I had to go back to catwalk presentations I would be in a panic…Already the models I find are too skinny, too sad. And I knew the age of the super top models, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who were always lively and smiling. Today you go between several defiles and you will see the exact same type of girl – it just doesn’t inspire me. Of course I do presentations, I do three presentations a year: spring, fall and cruise, that I show at my showroom and what I like is to have the buyers come to me. They buy, things sell well, and that really gives me the feeling of existing for something because I know that somewhere out there in the world I have clients that adore what I’m doing and that’s really reward enough.”

While he’s not impressed with today’s models, Herve is a big fan of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld because he’s so inspiring to work with.

He said: “He is a genius! He is someone very wonderful. I started my career as a hair stylist, then hat maker, and then I met Karl and it was a shock. There is nobody like him. I had the chance to work very closely with him at Fendi and Chanel, and he gives everything. You just have to look at him work. We learn a lot with him…he is good at everything, it’s a spirit and a vision of things, and he is very, very modern.”

Katie Holmes collaborates with Italian design house Valextra to create a luxury bag.

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2011

Katie Holmes has collaborated with Italian design house Valextra to create a luxury bag.

The actress and her Holmes & Yang fashion label co-founder Jeanne Yang will launch two versions of the calfskin tote, one in white and navy and the other white and black, which will retail for $3,950, in July.

Speaking about Valextra, Katie told WWD: “Their quality is exceptional. There’s such integrity in their work – they’re artists.”

Valextra CEO Emanuele Carminati Molina revealed the company were delighted to team up with Katie and Jeanne because they admire the “simple but chic” style of Holmes & Yang.

He explained: “This was our first collaboration [and it's been] really incredible. We decided to follow the desires of Katie and Jeanne who wanted to have their own bag realised by Valextra. Because they love our products…and we wanted to see, and understand which style they were wearing. We understood that the style is simple but very chic, clean lines, sophisticated, with a lot of attention to the details. I knew that it was good for Valextra to try, and to mix our style with their style.”

The entire design process only took two weeks with Katie meeting with the Valextra team when she visited Milan for Fashion Week in February.

Madonna’s plans to build a school for girls in Malawi have been “discontinued”.

By Andrea Petrou on March 25th, 2011

Madonna’s plans to build a school for girls in Malawi have been “discontinued”.

The ‘Celebration’ singer pledged to build an academy in the African country following her adoption of now five-year-old son David in 2006, but the $3.8 million she has put into the project through her charitable foundation Raising Malawi has so far not developed into an educational establishment.

In an email to contributors to the school fund from the Kabbalah Centre International in Los Angeles, Michael Berg – who co-founded the charity with the pop star, who is a follower of the mystical faith, and the centre – claimed original plans were not to be finished.

According to the New York Times newspaper, he said: “A thoughtful decision has been made to discontinue plans for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, as it was originally conceived.”

The board of directors at the charitable organisation has been replaced and a caretaker board, including the 52-year-old singer, has taken over.

Madonna – who also adopted now six-year-old Mercy from Malawi in 2009, joining children Lourdes, 14, and Rocco, 10 – admits she is “frustrated” at the development because of the lack of education in the country.

She said in a statement: “There is a real education crisis in Malawi, 67 per cent of girls don’t go to secondary school.

“Our team is going to work hard to address this in every way we can.”

It has not been determined exactly what has happened to the $3.8 million, with Trevor Nielsen from the Global Philanthropy Group – who Madonna recruited last year when initial signs of trouble were brewing at her charity – claiming funds have not all been “accounted for”.

He said: “Despite $3.8 million having been spent by the previous management team, the project has not broken ground, there was no title to the land and there was, over all, a startling lack of accountability on the part of the management team in Malawi and the management team in the United States.

“We have yet to determine exactly what happened to all of that $3.8 million. We have not accounted for all the funds that were used.”
