Ahhh Madonna, or Madge as we affectionally like to call her. She’s been around for as long as we can remember and probably kicked off some of the biggest trends of the last few decades. Although her style today is far more sophisticated, there’s no denying that the pop queen was a 1980s style icon, and dare we say it, possibly the pioneer of raunch, leotards and leather.

Today she’ll be seen out in suits, leather jackets and jeans, which although are all lovely, aren’t very exciting. However rewind 30 years and you’d hardly recognise the leather clad, skimpily dressed pop star.

Madge was one of the first to be risque with her stage and everyday outfits, and was rarely seen with more than a few clothes on. She introduced the Gaultier “conical cone” bra, which has slowly made its way back into our fashion radars as the underwear as outwear trend continues to go strong.

And although leotards are now more associated with Lady Gaga, Madge was wearing these, before the Queen of Quirkiness was even born, teaming them up with fishnets, studs and of course PVC. There have also been times in the past few years where Madge’s daring ulterior ego has come through. She wore a bright green headpiece with batwing skirt for an event in 2007, and her stage outfits are all still about bodysuits and stockings. Let’s of course not forget the purple leotard that made an appearance in 2005 just as we thought Madge was growing up. That said we wouldn’t change her look. She is after all a Material Girl who was at a time in Vogue.
