Gucci creative director Frida Giannini believes fashion is all about “natural elegance”.

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Frida Giannini believes fashion is all about “natural elegance”.

The Gucci creative director – who rose up through the ranks from design director at the Italian fashion house to her current role – thinks fashion is important but admits clothes cannot make a person look good if they are lacking natural style.

She explained: “The base of everything is what’s inside, your natural elegance – authenticity is important. If you’re not elegant in yourself you can never look sophisticated, unique and original.”

Frida – who is responsible for both womenswear and menswear at the iconic label – revealed she gets the inspiration for her menswear line from an eclectic mix of people including Jimmy Stewart, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

She says she designs clothes for men with an Italian soul and prefers to look to past icons rather than today’s celebrities when creating new collections for the brand.

Frida explained to Esquire magazine: “I design for international men but with an Italian soul. I try to reference men from the past, men such as James Stewart and other actors from the Fifties and Sixties because they were so elegant and so charming. But at the same time I’m attracted to rock stars from the Seventies such as The Rolling Stones and David Bowie.”

Leighton Meester hates being called a fashion icon

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Leighton Meester hates being called a fashion icon.

Although the ‘Gossip Girl’ star thinks her personal style has been influenced by both her move to New York and her time on the show, she wishes people weren’t so interested in what she wears because she only dresses to please herself.

She said: “‘Gossip Girl’ has absolutely changed my style. And living in New York I’ve become more brave and aware of fashion.

“I completely close my eyes to it when people call me a fashion icon because it’s an opinion from people that I don’t know. I wear what I like.”

While most actresses feel pressure to stay in shape, Leighton, 25, says working keeps her fit but admitted she doesn’t care about her weight and happily tucked into ribs every day while shooting her latest film ‘Country Strong’.

She told Britain’s OK! magazine: “I do a lot of working so that’s a lot of working out for me in my life. I don’t feel any pressure to be a particular shape.

“During the filming of ‘Country Strong’ I felt totally free to eat some ribs!”

Victoria Beckham “owns her style” says costume designer Patricia Field

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Victoria Beckham “owns her style” according to costume designer Patricia Field.

The ‘Sex and the City’ stylist thinks some people get too serious about fashion but praises Spice Girl turned fashion designer Victoria for her attitude to clothes and believes she gets it right every time.

She told People.com: “My hint to all is, enjoy it! Don’t be too serious about it. Choose what you like – and don’t get distracted by what’s trendy or what your friends like. Express yourself and you will own it.”

“Victoria Beckham an example of someone who owns her style. Style is like a flag. When we see red, white and blue we think America. When we see Victoria Beckham, we immediately associate her style with her. To repeat . she owns it!”

Patricia has previously compared Victoria to Lady Gaga, saying the pair have a “similar” approach to fashion.

She said: “They’re both very different in style and yet very similar. Lady Gaga is a pop star personified. Like Madonna before her, she has fun with her fashion and it’s all very showy and tongue in cheek.

“In the same way, Victoria’s created her own look that’s very glamorous. She definitely has her own way of putting outfits together that other people try to copy. They’re very different as style icons, but individually both very stylish in their own right.”

D&G will not stand trial for allegedly evading one billion euros in tax

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will not stand trial for allegedly evading one billion euros in tax.

An Italian judge decided there was not enough evidence to take the fashion duo – popularly known as Dolce and Gabbana – to court after an investigation into the company Gado Sri they set up in Luxembourg.

The investigation by Italian authorities was based on the alleged failure of the pair to declare revenues of approximately 840 million euros and claims by investigators that Gado Sri is a legal entity set up to avoid higher tax rates in Italy.

Giuseppe Bana, the lawyer representing the designers’ accountant Luciano Patelli, told WWD: “I am very pleased with this decision.

“The judge prevented this from going too far. It’s an investigation that should never have been initiated in the first place.”

Addressing the allegations previously, the former couple said: “It’s an absurd demand based on a completely abstract calculation.

“We will tell the 3,800 employees of the companies, which compose the group, that we have paid all that was due and that we will strenuously defend ourselves to avoid being unjustly forced to pay for something that never existed in the first place.

“This higher taxable sum is a virtual figure we have never received, the result of a theoretical accounting exercise.”

Cheryl Cole confirmed for US X Factor: We take a look at her style

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

The grapevine is buzzing this morning with reports that Cheryl Cole has been confirmed to judge the US X Factor.

According to the rumour mill, record producer and confirmed judge L.A. Reid let it slip that the pop princess was to star alongside him on the show.

In a conversation with Perez Hilton, he said: “We’re gonna compete against American Idol just fine. I’m very confident. But along with Simon Cowell and Cheryl, I don’t know who the other judge is.”

However, Simon Cowell still won’t play and confirm or deny the rumours. It is thought he originally had reservations about moving Chezza to the US over fears that no one would be able to understand her Geordie accent.

We however think she’ll do amazingly. Especially in the fashion stakes. Just to remind you of her style we’ve put together a mini gallery of all her red carpet and casual looks.

Chanel appointed Blake Lively to be the face of its Mademoiselle handbags because of her “spontaneity and fresh youthful image”.

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Chanel appointed Blake Lively to be the face of its Mademoiselle handbags because of her “spontaneity and fresh youthful image”.

The French fashion house surprised many in the industry by choosing the blonde American actress to be the face of their new bag range, ahead of models with the European look they usually choose.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Blake’s spontaneity and fresh youthful image have convinced Chanel that she is the right person to represent the house and this range of bags.”

Blake – who was highly praised by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, who photographed her for the Mademoiselle range – has previously said: “I had other opportunities and I would say, ‘Thank you so much, but I am holding out for Chanel. That’s who I want to be the face of.

“And people would say, ‘Well, that’s unrealistic, they only hire Europeans,’ and I said: ‘Well, how great. I’ll be the first then.’”

The addition of Blake has proved controversial, however, with one insider telling Vogue.com that Chanel “would literally fire anyone who admits” they are not happy with her as the face of Mademoiselle handbags.

Jennifer Lopez’s beauty routine has suffered since she became a mother.

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Jennifer Lopez’s beauty routine has suffered since she became a mother.

The singer-and-actress – who has three-year-old twins Max and Emme with husband Marc Anthony – revealed she never gets a minute to herself anymore and barely even has time to have a bath alone without the kids wanting her attention.

She told Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “It can be hard. Sometimes it’s like literally I’m taking a bath and Max is off with the clothes and in the tub with me or in the shower. You don’t have a minute by yourself. Go to the bathroom? Baby standing right there. I’m like ‘Go outside.’ Emme’s like, ‘No way’. So yeah it’s tough.”

Jennifer has previously admitted her famously toned stomach is proving difficult to maintain since having children.

She explained: “I’ve always been athletic and really enjoyed that. And I’ve never been a big eater.

“But since I had the babies, it’s been harder. Your body does change. Not too drastically, but I definitely have to work harder and watch what I eat more.

“I’ve never had to work on my stomach before – it was like, concave, I was a lucky person – but since the babies, I do. I really have to work on it.”

Kate Moss says ex Christian Dior designer, John Galliano, needs help

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Kate Moss’s fiance Jamie Hince believes John Galliano has a “problem with alcohol”.

The rocker – whose bride-to-be will reportedly wear a Galliano creation when she walks down the aisle in July – believes the former Christian Dior designer, who was caught on video proclaiming his love for Germany dictator Adolf Hitler, has many issues which need to be dealt with.

He said: “I haven’t seen the video and I don’t even know John that well, but I feel like people have got to see reason here.

“John has a problem with alcohol, and the reality is that when we’re in trouble, and that’s all of us, we say the most violent, cursed things.

“You can judge them on the stupid words they said – which I think were stupid, I hope that goes without saying – or you can dig a bit deeper and you can try and find out what the problem is.”

Jamie thinks the designer’s outburst was not political and believes it proves Galliano – who has since been sacked from the French fashion house – has other problems and needs help.

He added to the Sunday Times magazine: “I think it’s obvious that it’s alcohol. People are trying to say those are his politics. ‘I love Hitler’ – that’s not political, that’s somebody in trouble.”

Celebrity and fashion trends: Navy Blue as seen on Amy Adams, January Jones and Alexa Chung

By Andrea Petrou on April 5th, 2011

Once a lowly contender to its bolder black and white cousins, navy blue was often left in the shade when it came to red carpet frocks and catwalk looks.

However this season it’s stepped out of the fashion wings, making a name for itself as the hot trend of 2011. Celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Amy Adams and January Jones have embraced this shade on the red carpet, while the likes of Armani have made it a must have summer colour thanks to catwalk designs.

And just in case you thought this was a one off look then you’re wrong because it looks as though this shade is here to stay thanks to designers such as Lanvin making it a key colour in their AW 2012 looks too.

See the gallery below for all the hot navy blue looks.
