Knitwear designer Bella Freud announces exciting collaboration with Christian Louboutin

By emilyborrett on April 8th, 2011

One of Christian Louboutin's sketches for the collaboration

Hold on to your Phillip Treacy hats, designer lovers, because there’s an exciting new collaboration on the horizon: queen of the knitted jumper, Bella Freud, is hooking up with the daddy of footwear, Christian Louboutin, to create a range of fetish-inspired knitwear. Freud will incorporate Louboutin’s shoe sketches into the designs, resulting in what we hope is going to be a cool and exciting dream collaboration.

There couldn’t be a better shoe designer for Bella to choose for the project, as Christian Louboutin is literally the daddy of high heels. Favoured by the young and old alike, the socialites and the high-profile actresses, a pair of Louboutins is standard issue in Fashion 101.

Freud said of the legendary footwear designer, who she has known for over twenty years: “”I have often admired his drawings and I wanted to use some to put on my knitwear. I love the way a drawing comes to life when it is reinterpreted in another medium. On a knit it you get the sense of someone having actually drawn it, rather than it being a computer generated image.” We really can’t wait until this range is up for grabs in mid July.

Keep your eyes peeled for this luxe collection when it finally hits the shops: we predict there will be a scrum.

ShinyStyle loves: Vintage-style swimwear for the beach

By emilyborrett on April 8th, 2011

Cupped Bandeau Spot Bikini

Picture 1 of 7

As we continue to gratefully bask in this amazing Spanish weather that’s sweeping over Britain, ShinyStyle’s thoughts have turned to swimwear. Something so simple, but so easy to get wrong; as I type I have about ten different bikinis lying forlornly unworn in my knicker drawer, that have been bought on the internet on a whim and then never worn.

But this spring, all the trends are working in swimwear’s favour – florals, fruit and bold digital prints are the things to be seen wearing, and we have high hopes for swimwear on the high street this year. Will 2011 be the year that Britain (especially me) finally gets it right?

Our mantra for this summer, we’ve decided, is going to be “flirtation and glamour”. With designers referencing the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Diana Dors and Jane Fonda at the moment in their collections, now is the time to discover your inner sex kitten. Our favourite place for beach-siren swimwear is Urban Outfitters – they have a gorgeous selection of Marilyn Monroe-esque bikinis and one pieces, which we guarantee will make heads turn.

Our other favourite shop for pin-up swimwear is the excellent What Katie Did, who have an expertise in tailoring their bikinis and underwear to create the illusion of a perfect film-star hourglass silhouette. So even if you don’t think you’ve got it, you can flaunt it. Be prepared to pay a little more for their designs, but you’ll get beautiful contour tailoring for your money and a well-made piece that will last forever.

Our number one pick? The cool plaid bikini from Urban Outfitters – we think the grungy tartan print gives an otherwise retro style a cool and modern edge. Check it out along with our other star buys in the gallery above.

“Love and Other Drugs” star Anne Hathaway admits that Oscars criticism was “tough”

By emilyborrett on April 8th, 2011

We’ve always had a soft spot for Anne Hathaway here at ShinyStyle – sweet, modest and down to earth, she’s just the right kind of star that we’d all love to be best friends with. Which is why hearing her speak out about how it felt to recieve so much criticism over her performance at the Oscars made us want to make her a cup of Horlicks and give her a big cuddle.

The lovely doe-eyed actress had to present the opening of the Oscars with heartthrob actor James Franco, and their back-and-forth banter was awkward to say the least (you can see the video here) – though we think that the actress did the best she could with the awful lines she was given, bless her, and was a real trooper about it, others have heavily criticised both the actress and the producers for her clumsy, not-particularly-funny presenting style. I suppose it’s a hard act to follow when Ricky Gervais is your predecessor..

Poor old Anne finally spoke out about her experiences at the Oscars on the Today show: “The critics were tough. They said we were the worst show ever. I think that qualifies as tough.” When asked if she’d do it again, the actress replied, “Maybe. Perhaps. No.” We’ll take that as a definite no, the poor duck.

Don’t worry Anne, we still love you!

Trend Alert: Sizzling prints for Spring

By emilyborrett on April 7th, 2011

Fruit Print Dress

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Everyone went crazy for Stella McCartney's tropical fruit-printed dresses and blazers - this copycat version from Very.co.uk is an absolute steal.

Spring is definitely, finally here (I wish for good) and it’s time to ditch our fail-safe slouchy black sweaters and leggings for something a bit more cheerful. And what better to celebrate this gloriously unexpected weather with but some eye-wateringly pretty prints, just crying out to be worn in the rare British sunshine?

There were prints as far as the eye could see at the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks. Breathtakingly pretty and feminine florals at Erdem, both seen on prints and stitched onto hand-made lace, shockingly bright leaf-prints at House of Holland, a sumptiously tropical offering from Stella McCartney of dress and separates printed with images of fruit.. I could go on.

Fashion prints have never been so sexy, so carefree, fun and happy, and the wonderful thing is that the high-street has wisely cottoned on to this. In the gallery above is our very favourite printed pieces available from the high street right now – so get stuck right in. This is a trend that excludes absolutely no one – all you need is the confidence to wear something eye-grabbing and fun, and there’s a piece out there to suit absolutely everyone.

Paris, you’ve been naughty: The squillionaire heiress faces a lawsuit over nicked jewellery

By emilyborrett on April 7th, 2011

Girl-about-town and impossibly rich heiress of the Hilton hotel nest-egg, Paris Hilton, has found herself in a bit of a sticky situation with the law – and all because she forgot to give back about $60,000 worth of jewellery that was borrowed for an event. Don’t worry Paris, we’ve all done it – except with library books, not diamonds.

The cheesed-off jewellers in question are the Italian company Diamani, who lent Paris the jewels all the way back in 2007. Apparently ever since Paris has been trying to sneakily avoid giving the jewels back, ignoring letters and requests from Diamani to have the loaned items back. We would have thought that Paris is so rich that she doesn’t actually need to steal jewellery, but you know, whatever – maybe she’s just been having a bit of a Winona Ryder moment. She must be a bit worried at the moment, as the jeweller’s have pulled out the big guns and filed a lawsuit against her yesterday.

As we all know, this isn’t the heiress’ first scrape with the long arm of the law, most recently recieving a one-year suspended sentence for possession of cocaine. Come on Paris, we’ve all seen photos of you in that orange jumpsuit and it didn’t suit you one bit – it’s not going to suit you now either. Sort it out girl!

Designer spotlight: Alexander McQueen

Autumn/Winter 2002

As we continue paying tribute to some of fashion’s finest designers with galleries highlighting some of the best of their work, there are few designers as deserving as the late, great Alexander McQueen, whose tragic suicide last year rocked the fashion industry and whose absence is still felt.

It would be fair to say that Alexander McQueen, first real name Lee, is one of the finest designers that Britain’s ever had. With his expert knowledge of advanced tailoring, reckless and innovative approach to design, and a talent for shocking an audience, his shows have always buzzed with the kind of atmosphere that only happens when you are in the presence of true, unadulterated creation.

One only needs to look back at the footage from McQueen’s funeral to see just how loved he was by all: the whole fashion world seemed to be (and still is) in mourning. At his funeral the likes of Daphne Guiness, Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer were all there to say goodbye to Britain’s most brilliant designer, some of them wearing their own McQueen pieces as a final good-bye.

A year has passed since the maverick designer was tragically found hanged in his home, but his legacy of design still remains him. Always bursting to the seams with drama, darkness and emotion, his collections were all true works of art. To see our favourite Lee McQueen moments since the beginning of his career, right up until his final collection shown after his death, check out the gallery above.

Saucy new Jack Wills catalogue is deemed “too provocative”

By Andrea Petrou on April 7th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Lots of pimply hormonal Hooray Henrys will be saddened to read that Jack Wills, the university outfitters and go-to store for the rich and sloaney, is in trouble over an X-rated campaign which has let to their store catalogue being banned.

One of the sexually suggestive images seen in the latest Jack Will's catalogue

The store, which targets young, wealthy teens in moneyed universities and public schools, has always openly taken inspiration from the “hedonistic university lifestyle” that all of us university students are reported to lead. The Jack Wills’ youth brigade is portrayed as the following: topless (and suspiciously mature-looking) teenage girls in chaste floral underwear entwined around posh-looking youths wearing trademark hoodies, on a beach, in front of all their laughing friends. Oh, to be young!

So you can see why the parents of the teens these images are marketed at are a bit miffed. What the high-end store described as the portrayal of “positive, fun and sometimes flirtatious” interactions between your typical teen at Oxford was seen by others as, well, a bit porny really.

The ASA has indignantly stepped into the fray, challenging Jack Wills’ statements by countering that the partial nudity “went beyond what could be described as fun or flirtatious”, and “was sufficiently provocative as to present a risk to younger teenagers”.

Subsequently the now infamous Jack Wills catalogue has been found in breach advertising rules and has been taken out of distribution (though I’m sure you can find it somewhere on the black market, boys).

Spring/Summer 2011 must-haves: This season’s hottest shades

Floral Cat's Eye Sunglasses

Full-on glamour is the trend rocking the catwalks at the moment - we love how this Asos pair has a modern twist to a classic shape. Buy them, love them, wear them with everything.

Glory be, how great is this Mediterranean weather? I actually got a little bit sunburnt yesterday when I spent a long day on the grass with friends (I was supposed to be doing university work, but who can work in weather like this? We have to take advantage when it might be snowing or something next week.) And so, to thank this weather that’s winging it’s way over from Spain, apparently – thanks, Spain – we’re looking at one of summer’s most important fashion item, sunglasses.

Luckily for you readers there’s an absolute abundance of cool eyewear on the market at the moment, thanks to the inspirational catwalks of designers such as Henry Holland, Jil Sander and Prada, where eye-popping colour, futuristic shapes and glamourpuss styles were key. Our absolute favourite style of sunnies this season is the 50′s cat’s-eye sunnies, which have made a huge comeback, and will add a touch of glamour to any outfit this summer.

To see our favourite sunnies around at the moment, check out our gallery.

Style icon spotlight: Edie Sedgwick

By Andrea Petrou on April 7th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Edie looking elegant in her favourite clothes of choice: slinky black dancewear to show off her tiny frame

Picture 1 of 8
Picture 1 of 8

Carrying on with our spotlight galleries where we last paid tribute to Audrey Hepburn, today we’re going to look at the infamous 1960′s icon Edie Sedgwick. More well-known for her doe eyes and eye for fashion than any of the actual films that she starred in, you know someone’s style has to be recognised when it eclipses even their own career. Friend and confidante of Andy Warhol, star of the infamous Factory and star of films such as Poor Little Rich Girl and Ciao! Manhattan, Edie’s tiny little dresses, fur coats and chandelier earrings defined the swinging sixties.

What was so great about Edie’s style was it’s simplicity – old dance costumes and second-hand jewellery were all she needed to throw a look together. Whether she was dancing in front of a camera in a simple white shirt or frolicking at a Velvet Underground show in a leotard and a pair of tights, her style was always effortless.

We’ve found some sixties-fabulous pieces on the high street that are pure Edie through and through. If you’re feeling brave, go the whole hog with a leotard, faux-diamonds and just opaque tights for modesty- though if you can’t face the idea of going out just in a pair of tights, a shift dress is a flattering and timeless style to rock.

Why Kate Middleton’s style isn’t all that

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

I’m sure I’m committing some sort of Royal treason, or at least having that wedding invite, which should be winging its way to me very soon, revoked, but I have to tell you I have a huge issue with Kate Middleton’s style.

She may have stolen the Prince’s heart but are those fashion columns really worth it? Is her style so great that we’re willing to sell our teeth for it? In my opinion, the answer is a plus sized no.

Yes, she’s shown that royal style doesn’t have to cost the earth, appearing in a range of high class highstreet frocks for her engagement (the blue Issa dress) and that white last season Reiss dress, but has anyone else noticed that since this solidarity for bargain fashion her style has become, well increasingly, er dull.

Gone are the short middle of the thigh lengths and funky floral prints, which you would expect a mid 20 year old to wear, and in come the plain colours, tweed fabrics and longer lengths. Yep just as she’s extended her name – we all apparently have to call her Katherine now – her hemlines have also seen a little more growth.

In fact Kate better watch out, with fashion like this, she may be finding her wardrobe is being raided by the Queen.

However, it would be unfair to put all the blame of Kate here. Judging by her past style we’re sure the elders at Buckingham Palace have decided to interfere a little and place her in the fashion cubby hole we’re currently seeing. And Kate’s probably just doing what every newcomer into the Royal family has done in the past and tried to fit in.

In fact the blame probably lies with us, the media, and the public who have put her onto a fashion pedestal. The fact that we’re all running riot to get our hands on the new style “The Middleton” – a hemline that sits demurely just above the knee – should really say it all.

Since when have any of us decided that on a night out, or in the summer months, a length that sits just above the knee is better than shorts, or a little summer mini skirt? I’m sure if this length was channelled a few seasons ago, it would have ended up in the bargain basement bins and in the 75 percent off sale rails, but now we’re tearing up those highstreet stores looking for these and beating down anyone who gets in our way, just so we can say we have a “Middleton”.

Will we wear it? Yes, probably proudly to the pub until someone not au fait with Middleton mania points out that the “old man’s pub” is down the road. Then we’ll pack it lovingly away into the back of our wardrobes and perhaps pull it out all moth eaten when someone bemoans the fact that they missed out on the look.

So who is Kate or Kate’s “stylists” basing this look on, apart from the Queen of course.

Some may say her style mirrors that of the late Princess Diana, and to extent, the classic shapes she opts for do. However, and you have to remember that Diana was an 80s girl, the late princess didn’t conform to that classic style. Instead she stuck a fashion finger up with her own style of shoulder pads, ruffles and sparkles.

Maybe then we should look to princess Zara for the answer, a fan of the classic look. But come on do we really want classic?

We and the fashion industry have been trying to steer away from classic for years, as have designers. Take “classic” British Brand Burberry. Known for its quintessential beiges and of course the trench coat the brand has quickly moved on offering snake prints, aviator jackets and mini dresses.

So where does this leave Kate in the fashion world? Will she take a style stand once she’s finally got a ring on her finger or will she carry on to conform to the Royal’s fashion way of thinking? And will the industry and public continue to worship the preppy, boring look she’s sporting?

I can’t answer the first, but as we all know fashion is fickle and princess or not Kate won’t be holding those column inches with her safe style. In fact I’d go as far to say that her fashion status will disappear as quickly as her hubby to be’s hairline if her long hemlines continue.

Christophe Decarnin is leaving Balmain

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Sad faces everyone because it looks like Balmain is losing a great designer.

That’s right Christophe Decarnin is leaving the fashion house.

The designer – famed for introducing the rock and military inspired look to the label – has announced he will depart the French fashion house, which he joined in 2005 before being made creative director in November 2007, though his successor has not yet been named.

Paying tribute to Christophe, Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin said: “Since 1945, the house of Pierre Balmain has been one of the leading French and international luxury brands. Christophe Decarnin’s work with the house’s design team contributed to the success that the brand has enjoyed in recent years.”

It is expected the fashion house will promote one of their current employees to the position of creative director.

Questions about Christophe’s future with Balmain were first raised last month when he was absent from their autumn/winter 2011-12 show in Paris.

However, at the time, a spokesperson cited medical reasons for his absence.

They said: “Christophe was feeling unwell and was asked to stay at home by doctor’s orders. It’s been a demanding season and unfortunately he couldn’t be at the show today. The collection was done completely under his creative direction. Now he needs to rest.”

Lady Gaga wats to go nude on TV

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Lady Gaga wants to be nude on all TV shows because it would be “timeless”.

The 25-year-old singer – who is well known for her love of eccentric clothes, including a dress made entirely of cuts of beef and an outfit made of frosted plastic – has joked if she was nude all the time no one would ever question her fashion credentials because they would never have anything to talk about.

Speaking on her video blog GagaVision, she said: “Maybe we should be more timeless. Maybe we should just wear a classic black suit all the time. Or just nudity? That way it’s always in style! From now on, ‘All television spots I’d like to be nude so that I will always be timeless.’”

The ‘Born This Way’ hitmaker recently revealed she would be starting a side career as a fashion writer for V Magazine from May.

Writing on twitter, she said: “I have some exciting news little monsters. I begin next month as a Fashion+Art Columnist for VMagazine.(sic)”

Gwen Stefani is vain

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

Gwen Stefani is incredibly “vain”.

The 41-year-old singer is renowned for her immaculate grooming and because of this, Gwen – who has two children, Kingston, four, and Zuma, two, with husband Gavin Rossdale- admitted she struggled with her changing shape during her pregnancies because she felt “gross”.

She explained: “I mean, I’m very vain. That would be my middle name. Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual.

“You feel pretty gross when you are first pregnant. You don’t feel cute, you feel disgusting. You’re getting fat. It was hard.”

While Gwen is obsessed with her appearance, she doesn’t think the latest crop of singers, including Rihanna and Lady Gaga, are inspired by her look because she wears more clothes than they do and doesn’t think about promoting a sexy image.

She told America’s Elle magazine: “I don’t see myself in those girls. I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there’s going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing.”

Gwen also revealed Valentine’s Day (14.02) is always special for her and Gavin, because the pair – who have been together for 14 years and married for nine – enjoyed their first kiss around that time.

She said: “The first time we ever kissed was right around Valentine’s Day – we were in New Orleans on tour. So, yeah, I always think about that because it’s unbelievable that we’ve been able to stay together. I feel so proud of us – it’s one of my biggest achievements.”

Designer spotlight: Chanel through the ages

By Andrea Petrou on April 6th, 2011

We couldn’t do a designer spotlight series without including Chanel, after all this iconic fashion house has bought us a great deal of style joy over the past century.
The design house was the first to bring chic elegance into the mainstream and combine different fabrics including fur, tweeds and on-trend hats.

And this is really what attracted celebrities right through the 50s and 60s to now to wear them. Under Karl Lagerfeld’s current designs, Chanel has become alot more funky – think mini dresses, luxe fabrics and tiered styles, yet that elegance still remains. Fans now include the likes of Lily Allen, Emma Watson and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few.

See the gallery below for styles ranging all the way back to the early 1900s to today, as well as celebrity fans.
