Nicola Roberts helps design solo shoes

By Andrea Petrou on May 23rd, 2011

Nicola Roberts has helped design the shoes she will wear to launch her solo career.

The Girls Aloud star collaborated with up-and-coming designer Atalanta Weller to create the wedged footwear she wears on her promotional shots and Atalanta admits she was very hands-on.

She told vogue.co.uk: “A collaboration is like a good conversation. Nicola came to my studio a couple of times and I went to hers; we initially chatted about her music, the forthcoming album and how this related to her vision for the shoes. I went away and started designing my response to this. After our first meeting I was excited by her ideas and collaborating with people who have a strong vision is really fantastic. Nicola considers everything she does really carefully and has a totally clear view of what she wants to achieve. While the shoes are just a small part of this, I knew it would be interesting and fun to work together.”

Although Atalanta admits they were an unlikely pairing, she said they worked very well together.

She said: “I think we are an unlikely pairing which is why I was intrigued when Nicola approached me about working together. I think that she has incredible style and she’s extremely distinctive, luxurious and original in the way she wears clothes. I have not collaborated like this before and the fact that it was for the launch of Nicola’s solo music career meant we could be quite experimental. Everything was new and fresh.”

Florence Welch has been getting style ideas from the Statue of Liberty

By Andrea Petrou on May 23rd, 2011

Florence Welch has been getting style ideas from the Statue of Liberty.

The Florence and the Machine singer – who is well known for her love of fashion – arrived at the Wyld at W London – Leicester Square party last night (19.05.11) and onlookers noted how the famed fashionista seemed to have dressed strikingly like the New York landmark.

A source told BANG Showbiz: “She looked great at the party, throwing shapes with her boyfriend Stuart Hammond while enjoying Wyld Shots.

“However, as cool as the headband she was wearing was, there was no doubt she looked just like the Statue of Liberty in New York – she even had matching sandals! It’s an unusual place to look for inspiration, but for her it worked.”

Florence was joined at the event by Hollywood legend Cuba Gooding Jr. and British fashionista Alexa Chung, who all enjoyed the music put on for them by a host of DJs including Nick Grimshaw.

The ‘Dog Days Are Over’ hitmaker has previously admitted it took her a long time to develop her own sense of style and feel confident in her looks.

She said: “When did I first feel beautiful? It took a long time because I was a short, chubby kid. It wasn’t until I was 17 that I grew into myself and started wearing the clothes that I wanted to wear.

“As a teenager, my best friend and I started going to burlesque shows in vintage clothes from charity shops held on with safety pins. I finally felt like I could express myself in clothes.”

Kimberley Walsh says she is inspired by curvy women like Beyonce Knowles when she dresses.

By Andrea Petrou on May 23rd, 2011

Kimberley Walsh says she is inspired by curvy women like Beyonce Knowles when she dresses.

The shapely Girls Aloud singer said she chooses clothes that suit her figure and looks to other celebrities such as Beyonce and Halle Berry for ideas.

The beautiful pop star, who is dating Justin Scott, said: “I guess I tend to look towards curvier women like Beyonce and see what looks good on them. And Halle Berry also has a great body. If I had her figure I don’t think I’d complain!”

The 29 year old – who is taking a break from music to build a career as a TV presenter – added she likes to dress to a 50s style to flatter her shape – and she has learned not to get too hung up on her body flaws.

She said: “I always dress to suit my shape. I won’t wear a trend if it doesn’t suit my figure. I love that whole 50s style, mainly because it suits my body shape, rather than it being a trend.

“I’d like to have longer legs – but wouldn’t everyone? It’s just the way it is. But they probably wouldn’t look right with the rest of my shape anyway!”

Lady Gaga says she is a ‘traditional’ girl at heart

By Elisabeth on May 20th, 2011

Lady Gaga is known for her love for eccentric outfits and theatrical performances – who else has showed up at an awards ceremony dressed in meat and arrived to the Grammy awards in an ‘egg’?

Despite her more unusual sartorial choices, Gaga doesn’t think of herself as crazy and when it comes to family, she believes herself to be very normal.

The ‘Judas’ hitmaker said on MTV show ‘Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside’: “I’m really quite traditional, actually, contrary to what some people might think about me. I’m quite traditional in the family sense.”

Gaga says she was inspired to become a singer by her parents Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta, who encouraged her to pursue her interest in music by buying her records from artists like The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

We’ll happily admit that we’ve had a bit of a girl crush on Mad Men actress January Jones for a long time. Since rising to fame in the 50s based TV series, Jones has been followed around by photographers to get a shot of her performing daily tasks. Would be a bit annoying really…

However, the blonde beauty – who is expecting her first baby in autumn, although she is yet to disclose who the father is – told The Sun that she feels “safe” when followed around by paparazzi.

“The weird thing is, it kind of makes me feel safe. I live alone and I feel like they’re always there, always watching. If someone were to come in and rob me, there are photographers. It’s like the best security system ever.”

Now that we know what January thinks about the paparazzi, let’s take a look at her style evolution.

Penelope Cruz wants to “slap” women who worry about getting old

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Penelope Cruz wants to “slap” women who worry about getting old.

The 37-year-old actress – who gave birth to her first child Leo with her husband Javier Bardem in January – can’t wait to have wrinkles because she believes they tell a person’s life story.

She said: “When I hear a woman who is in her early 30s is worrying about growing old, I just want to slap her.

“When I’m 80, I want to look in the mirror and see an 80-year-old woman. My grandmother had so many wrinkles and every wrinkle told a story. I want to experience every year of my life for what it is. It doesn’t mean I am against somebody who does a little retouch or [has] plastic surgery. I don’t judge people who do it. I just don’t like how women complain about growing old.”

Family is clearly very important to Penelope who is current starring in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ with Johnny Depp and she revealed she turned to her younger sister Monica for help when her baby bump got in the way of shooting stunts.

She added to the Metro newspaper: “My sister is actually a very good sword fighter because she had done this before in a film and she was very gracious to help me out with the sword fighting scenes in London when I became rounder.”

Nicole Richie only creates fashion ranges she would wear herself

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Nicole Richie only creates fashion ranges she would wear herself.

The 29-year-old beauty – who has fashion ranges House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate – is launching a new range of shoes, and she thinks it is important for them to comfortable as well as stylish.

She said: “My main goal for this particular collection – and for all the footwear that I design – is I want the shoes to look great but be comfortable at the same time.

“I’m a girl and I love shoes. Who doesn’t want to make exactly what you want?”

The former reality star – who creates jewellery, clothes and shoes through her brands – plans to create a handbag range soon, and hopes they all have an individual feel.

She added to people.com: “It’s important for me to give each one its own identity and really focus on what I want the specific collection to mean.”

Nicole recently confesses she has a closet full of Chanel handbags.

Asked how many of the French designer’s bags she had, she responded: “That’s not a fair question! OK, 30, but I stole a lot of them from my mom!”

Jennifer Lopez admits first fashion foray was a huge disappointment.

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Jennifer Lopez admits her first foray into fashion was a huge disappointment.

The singer-and-actress teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger’s brother Andy to launch her own clothing range, Sweetface, in 2001 but now admits it wasn’t what she expected as she felt “trapped” by it.

She told the New York Times newspaper: “I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right. And on top of it, I felt like I was trapped in a situation I couldn’t get out of, and my name was stamped on things that I didn’t believe in.”

Although the line closed, Jennifer didn’t let it put her off designing another line – this time she has teamed up with Tommy and her husband Marc Anthony to create a fashion collection with Kohls.

They are all confident the line will be a success because Jennifer has lots of control over it.

Tommy said of the new range: “The difference this time around is that Jennifer is fully engaged with a company that is professionally staffed to really develop anything she wants, from towels to knee-high suede boots. Literally, her wish is their command.”

Cheryl Cole would look good whatever her hairstyle says Vidal Sassoon

By Andrea Petrou on May 19th, 2011

Cheryl Cole would look good whatever her hairstyle, according to Vidal Sassoon.

The legendary hairdresser is a huge fan of the new US ‘X Factor’ judge’s look – who received criticism for her new bouffant hair do on the first day of auditions – and while he thinks her general style is beautiful, he wishes she would experiment a bit more.

Speaking on radio station Magic 105.4, he said: “The hairdresser knew what he was doing coz he made a shape that worked for her but with a face like this you can have any kind of cut and I just think this is too much with this long hanging hair.”

Along with Cheryl, the 83-year-old crimper – who is known for creating some of the most iconic styles of the 60s – revealed he loves Lady Gaga because she is willing try anything and has “no shame”.

He explained: You get individuals that have no shame. Nothing is out of the question. She has no shame at all and it’s wonderful.”

Although he is 83 and has no plans to slow down, Vidal admitted he has thought about how he would like to be remembered.

He said: “”You’ve got to be a [fitness fanatic] at 83, if you’re not half fit your dead but I would like to be remembered as the man who gave other hairdressers the chance to prove themselves.”
