Mary Portas asked by the government to breathe life into high street stores

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Highstreet fix it queen Mary Portas has been summoned by the Government.
Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg want her to lead an independent review into the future of the High Street looking at how they can promote the development of local shopping areas and get retailers into those closed down buildings.

Nick Clegg said: “Empty High Streets are a blight on the local economy. Vacant shops are also a wasted opportunity with far reaching consequences. When goods and services start to disappear our sense of community can be weakened and undermined. It is vital therefore that we examine what steps can be taken to revitalise and reinvigorate high street shopping centres across the country.”

Local high streets have suffered over the years, with big brands shunning these small spaces for out of town shopping centres, which attract more people because of free parking offerings.
The internet has also played a big part in the decline of the high street with many of us flocking online to order that dress or pair of jeans without having to move. That said, if you’re like me, you’ll know that nothing beats trying those togs on.

Have you shunned the high street in favour of bigger shopping centres or do you prefer the internet? Leave your comments below or vote to let us know.

Why do you shun the highstreet?
Better and free parking in out of town shopping centres
Better choice in out of town shopping centres
I like the ease of the internet

Kate Winslet is the new face of St John

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Kate Winslet is the new face of St John.

The 35-year-old actress is following in the footsteps of a number of big names including Angelina Jolie, Gisele Bundchen and Karen Elson to become the latest ambassador for the American knitwear brand and says she is “excited” about her latest project.

She said: “The St John collection is effortless and chic, and I think speaks to how real women live and dress today. I am excited to collaborate with George [Sharp] and work with St John.”

Kate – who has previously done promotional work for Lancome and Longines watches – is set to star in St John’s forthcoming fall advertising campaign.

Creative director George said the ‘Titanic’ star “captures the style” of the brand’s targeted female audience.

He added: “She is an accomplished, beautiful woman with an extraordinary body of work, and one of the most admired actors of her generation.

“She embodies the modern sensibility of St John, she is contemporary and authentically captures the style of the St John woman.”

Kate’s appointment comes after controversy in January 2010 when Karen replaced Angelina – who has recently become the new face of Louis Vuitton – after the ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ actress was deemed too big for the company.

St John’s chief executive Glenn McMahon previously said Angelina “overshadowed the brand”.

Marc Jacobs to become the subject of a new exhibition

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Marc Jacobs is to become the subject of a new exhibition.

The designer’s work for Louis Vuitton – where he has been creative director since 1997 – will be honoured at Paris’ Les Arts Decoratifs in a display, which will also pay tribute to the French fashion house’s eponymous designer, who started out his career as a trunkmaker in 1854.

The museum’s curator plans to showcase two different periods in the label’s history – the industrial revolution of the 19th Century and the globalisation of contemporary fashion and it is thought to take place next year.

Jacobs is very proud of his work and recently revealed he will only put his name on things he believes in.

He said: “If we didn’t believe in what we did, then I would feel that we sold out. As long as we do things with integrity and believe in them and are passionate, I don’t think we’ve sold out. Whether it’s an $11 flip-flop or a $2 key ring or a $2,000 dress, they’re all done with integrity. They’re all done with a design sense. As long as the creativity exists, then I don’t think it’s a sell-out. A sell-out is putting your name on any piece of c**p and then expecting people to buy it because it’s got your name on it. That’s what a sell-out is to me.”

Mel C says Victoria Beckham has “broken down a lot of barriers” in the fashion world

By Andrea Petrou on May 17th, 2011

Mel C says Victoria Beckham has “broken down a lot of barriers” in the fashion world.

The singer says she’s very proud of how much her former Spice Girls bandmate has achieved with her self-titled fashion label and was impressed with how well the dresses fitted when she wore two for a recent awards ceremony.

She told You magazine: “When I was up for the Olivier Awards, I called Victoria and asked if I could borrow one of her designs. She sent these gorgeous gowns over right away. I wore two that night; one for performing, and one for the ceremony, and they made me feel amazing, really pulled me in in all the right places. Victoria has broken down a lot of barriers to get where she has in fashion, to earn respect, and she works really hard.”

Mel also revealed how she is more comfortable with her body now she is a mother to two-year-old daughter Scarlet.

She said: “It used to keep my awake at night if I’d eaten something I shouldn’t have. I used to think that if anyone found out I would be mortified. Now I’ve come to terms with my problems and conquered them, I can talk about it.

“I feel, after Scarlet, that I am completely cured of that. You never know what’s around the corner, but I feel I have a very healthy attitude towards food and exercise and beauty and I haven’t had Botox or anything. I’m not saying I won’t in the future, but having my little girl has made me really quite relaxed about my physical self because she’s just mellowed me.”

Jade Jagger launches pop-up shop

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Jade Jagger has launched a pop-up shop.

The 39-year-old model-and-designer – daughter of Sir Mick Jagger and ex-wife Bianca Jagger – is working with Milletre boutique in Kensington, London, to create a capsule collection of jewellery and clothing.

She said: “It’s a great pleasure to collaborate with Milletre, it’s a beautiful store with a similar ethos to ours.

“We have created our own special corner with a selection of eveningwear in black and gold brocades. And spring-like daywear with our classic unique antique Rajasthanii blanked jackets and dressing.”

The British beauty has created the range of jewellery based on her love of glamour, with the disco ball being her inspiration.

She said: “I am also showcasing the jewellery including my classic and timeless skull range and also the dazzling new disco diamond collection, inspired by the ever presence and glamour of the disco ball and how it has featured in my life.”

Valentina Cangiano, who founded Milletre three years ago, said she was excited to be working with Jade because of the “uniqueness” of her work.

She said: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Jade Jagger.

“With our philosophy – focused on working with exclusive labels – we perfectly match the uniqueness of Jade Jagger’s brand.”

The pop-up will be open for the next month.

Diane Kruger is one of the stars of a new advertising campaign for Jaeger-LeCoultre.

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Diane Kruger is one of the stars of a new advertising campaign for Jaeger-LeCoultre.

A giant portrait of the stunning actress – shot by photographer Marcel Hartmann – has been erected on the French Riviera for the duration of the Cannes Film Festival alongside other film stars including Lars von Trier, Willem Dafoe and Rachel Weisz as part of the Cannes fait le mur exhibition.

Janek Deleskiewicz, Artistic Director of Jaeger-LeCoultre, revealed Diane was instrumental in forging a relationship between the company and photographer Marcel.

He explained to HH Magazine: “We have a mutual friend. Diane Kruger, who is the Jaeger-LeCoultre muse, was acquainted with Marcel Hartmann’s work and naturally pointed us in his direction when we were looking for a photographer for our Yearbook. This first encounter gave rise to a magnificent theme shot in Venice within the framework of our partnership with the Mostra.

“Like all beautiful stories, there was a sequel; Marcel came to take pictures of Diane at the Manufacture in the heart of the Valleé de Joux – a unique and entirely new setting for a great fashion photographer and an international actress. Everyone enjoyed the experience.”

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Cannes boutique will also show an exhibition of Marcel’s work and after collaborating with him once, Janek revealed the company was thrilled to pair up again.

He said: “The Cannes fait le mur exhibition is an initiative that had already appealed to us at the time of its first edition in 2010. When we found out that Marcel Hartmann was to orchestrate this year’s edition, Jaeger- LeCoultre’s support was a given.

“Our Cannes boutique will indeed make a perfect showcase for a complementary exhibition of Marcel’s work, to be presented in parallel during the period of the Cannes festival.”

Rihanna has reconnected with Chris Brown on twitter

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Rihanna has reconnected with Chris Brown on twitter.

The ‘S&M’ singer added her ex-boyfriend to the list of people she follows on the micro-blogging website and he has added her in return.

Twitter followers of the pop star expressed concern she had made contact with the ‘Kiss Kiss’ singer – who two years ago attacked her leaving her with a split lip and cuts and bruises to her face – and openly speculated as to whether the stars had rekindled their romance.

After one fan asked if she was back with her former boyfriend Rihanna snapped: “its fu**in twitter, not the altar! (sic)”

After the admirer became upset she quickly apologised, explaining that she wanted to make it clear to all her followers that she was not back in a relationship with Chris

She wrote: “babygirl I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt or offend u! Just needed to make it clear to the Navy! I still Stan for u xoxo. (sic)”

Chris, 21, was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service for assaulting Rihanna in February 2009.

Last month, the 23-year-old star revealed she didn’t expect to ever talk to him again despite agreeing to have a restraining order against him relaxed so he could more easily carry on with his career.

The ‘Rude Boy’ singer explained: “We don’t have to talk again ever in my life. I just didn’t want to make it more difficult for him professionally.

“What he did to me was a personal thing. It had nothing to do with his career. Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can’t perform at awards shows, that definitely made it difficult for him. That was the only thing it was going to change, so I didn’t care.”

Cheryl Cole relaxes after ‘X Factor’ auditions with a cup of tea and “trashy” TV.

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Cheryl Cole relaxes after ‘X Factor’ auditions with a cup of tea and “trashy” TV.

The ‘Promise This’ singer has joined Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and record producer L.A. Reid on the judging panel of the talent show but despite relocating to Los Angeles, the British star hasn’t thrown herself into the party lifestyle there.

She told The Sun newspaper: “When I get in at night I have a shower, put my pyjamas on and watch soaps and trashy American shows. I also find cooking therapeutic but I’m not great at it. I’m learning.”

Meanwhile, movie producer Harvey Weinstein has revealed he tried to meet up with Cheryl at the Cannes Film Festival because he is keen to launch her movie career.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I want to put Cheryl Cole in one of my films. I’ve heard all about her – she is getting a lot of buzz in the States with US ‘X Factor’. She’d sure make a great leading lady. She has a very interesting life story, I’m told.

“I’ve been looking for her all over the festival. I even invited her to my party but she couldn’t come, so hopefully when we’re back in the States we can talk.”

Gisele Bundchen has launched her own lingerie range

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

Gisele Bundchen has launched her own lingerie range with a stunning show in her native Brazil.

The supermodel paraded down the runway in items from the Hope Lingerie Gisele Bundchen Intimates collection – starting with a blush pink satin and lace set, followed by a skimpy black set with sheer panelling and another black sequinned number – and said it was a dream come true to have her own underwear range.

In a statement before the show, Gisele said: “Life is made of dreams and I’m very happy to announce that now you will know the Brazilian intimate. My dream come true is for Hope. With you, Gisele Bundchen Brazilian Intimate. Enjoy the show.”

Earlier this month, Gisele was named the world’s top earning model for the seventh year.

The Brazilian beauty has topped the list, compiled by Forbes.com, since 2004, but this year saw her income increase by a huge $20 million to earn $45million over the past 12 months.

Proof of Gisele’s star status enhancing brands is easy to find, as after becoming the face of hair care brand Pantene in March 2010, the company’s sales went up by 40 per cent in Latin America.

Gallery: British Soap Awards: Michelle Keegan, Jennifer Metcalfe, Brooke Vincent and more

By Andrea Petrou on May 16th, 2011

We love the British Soap Awards. Usually because it’s a chance for us to get a little bit critical and laugh about the garish red carpet fashions.

However, this year it seems the soap elite have wised up, with hardly a lady putting a high heeled foot wrong on Saturday’s red carpet.

Leading the way was Hollyoak’s starlet Jennifer Metcalfe who went for a Cheryl Colesque black backless pantsuit. She led the backless tone for the rest of her ‘Oaks cast with Jorgie Porter opting for this look with a green pantsuit, and Stephanie Waring going for a backless grey frock.

Also flying the flag for the teen soap was Jackie Cooper who went for a white plunge neck frock with a split, she was joined in the white dress stakes by ‘Enders starlet and best actress winner Jessie Wallace who looked stunning in a white Grecian frock complete with an embellished neckline, while her co-star Shona McGarty went for a questionable purple frock, which showed off her midriff.
Over in the Corrie camp, we were disappointed by Michelle Keegan’s garish gold frock, however, Brooke Vincent’s lime green Lipsy frock, with her own customised beading saved the soap in terms of style.
Trend wise, Sarah Dunn and Suzanne Shaw flew the flag for 50s tea length and pleats, while Samia Smith had a play with the colour block trend.

See the gallery below for all the red carpet style.
