David and Victoria Beckham name their newborn daughter Harper Seven

By Andrea Petrou on July 11th, 2011

David and Victoria Beckham have named their newborn daughter Harper Seven.

The soccer superstar – who wore a number seven shirt when he played for Manchester United and England – revealed the baby’s name in a posting on his Facebook page and said both mother and baby, who was born yesterday morning (10.07.11) at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai hospital, are “doing well”.

David – who already has three sons, Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and six-year-old Cruz, with Victoria – wrote: “I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham. She weighed a healthy 7lbs 10oz and arrived at 7.55 this morning, here in LA.

“Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister xx.”

David and Victoria are thought to have chosen the name Harper – which is a popular moniker for both boys and girls in the US – because of its “lovely sound”, while Seven was decided upon due because it is considered a lucky digit.

A source in Los Angeles told The Sun newspaper: “The couple loved the name Harper. It has no hidden meaning – they just fell for the name and think it has a lovely sound.

“They went for Seven as a middle name as they think it is a lucky and spiritual number. And the baby arrived around 7am in July – the seventh month.”

The tot was delivered by Caesarean section, and David recently revealed the couple’s house has been decorated in pink ready for their arrival.

He previously said: “It’s a whole new, different thing for us. To have so much pink in the house, lilac in the house and dresses. All the clothes are ready, the room’s ready. We’re really excited.”

Kate Hudson is Dannii Minogue’s summer style icon

By Andrea Petrou on July 11th, 2011

Kate Hudson is Dannii Minogue’s summer style icon.

The Australian star loves the “relaxed” look of the ‘Fool’s Gold’ actress – who gave birth to a baby boy over the weekend – and says the blonde beauty is the ideal poster girl for her Project D fashion line.

She explained: “Kate Hudson is our Project D icon for relaxed boho summer chic.

“She makes me want to run around in a maxi dress on an island, and dream of looking as healthy and relaxed as she seems to be 24/7.”

Dannii is also an admirer of ‘Horrible Bosses’ actress Jennifer Aniston and the newest member of the British royal family, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

She explained: “Jennifer Aniston always has the ultimate glowing summer skin, year round. How does she do it?

“We all want to look as good as Catherine does in a bikini – and if we did, that’s all we would wear.”

Dannii plans to take inspiration from Kate when she hosts a barbecue this summer.

She told Britain’s Glamour magazine: “The 1970s are huge this season, and a 70s-style maxi dress with flip-flops is the perfect combo for outdoor entertaining.

“The flats are ideal for drifting around the garden on a sunny afternoon and you can hitch up your dress while sitting on the lawn to get some sun on your legs.”

John Galliano is being lined up for design for Topshop

By Andrea Petrou on July 11th, 2011

John Galliano is being lined up for design for Topshop.

The troubled designer – who reportedly launched a verbal attack on a couple in a Paris cafe in February and was fired as Dior’s creative director in March after a video showed him apparently drunk, telling a woman in a cafe he “loved Hitler” – is wanted by the British chain’s owner Sir Philip Green to create a range for them.

Although nothing has been signed, discussions are said to be in the early stages and Green and Galliano want the collaboration to happen.

If the deal does come off, it will mark a huge turnaround for Galliano, who has been in rehab since his arrest in February.

As well as being sacked form Dior he was replaced at his own label by Bill Gaytten.

However, he was given a boost after he received universal praise for the wedding dress he created for close friend and supermodel Kate Moss when she married rocker Jamie Hince last week.

Last month, Galliano appeared in a Paris court, where he blamed his recent outbursts on his addiction to alcohol, sleeping tablets and valium.

His lawyer Aurelian Hamelle said: “One obvious thing is that John Galliano was ill. He had a triple addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepine (valium) and sleeping pills.”

The lawyer said Galliano – who is now back in rehab to receive treatment for his addictions – was mortified to see how he acted in the video and denies being anti-Semetic.

Five people were to give evidence in the trial, which ended yesterday, and the verdict is due on September 8.

If he is found guilty, he faces a huge fine and a six-month prison sentence.

Rihanna takes up belly dancing to keep in shape

By shinychris on July 8th, 2011

Rihanna: Taken up belly dancing to keep fit

Rihanna has taken up belly dancing. The California King Bed singer is being given lessons in the exotic art by a professional dancer from Mexico in a bid to keep in shape – and friends would not be surprised to see some of her new moves turn up on the European leg of the singer’s Loud tour in September.

A pal of Rihanna told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “She loves belly dancing and has been getting all her dancers to join in. They’ve even had a few private Arabian-themed parties.

“We shouldn’t be surprised to see a little of this influence when Rihanna goes on tour later this year.”

Belly dancing appears to be a more conventional way for the 23-year-old singer to keep fit, but Rihanna – who is currently on her Loud tour in the US – has previously revealed she stays in shape by “walking for miles” through airports when she is going from place to place playing gigs.

She said: “I keep fit by walking through so many airports. You end up walking for miles in those places!”

Rihanna also has another reason for getting fit because she is looking for a man, recently explaining she wants a guy who will “earn” her love.

She added: “I’m open to love. But guys should have to earn it. Because the minute they get it, they want something else.

“Men are like hunters; they like the chase. So you have to keep ‘em guessing. Actually, I’m like that too. I get bored quickly. So if someone can make me laugh, that’s the best.”

Royal Canada Tour (final day): Kate Middleton in yellow Jenny Packham dress

By shinychris on July 8th, 2011

Kate Middleton helped a seriously ill little girl to realise her dream of meeting a real life princess on the last day of her Canada tour with Prince William.

Diamond Marshall, 6, presented Kate with a colourful bouquet of flowers when the royal couple arrived in Calgary, reports Radar online.

Big-hearted Kate couldn’t resist the shy little girl’s charms and knelt down to give her a big hug and a kiss.

The Duchess, wearing a primrose yellow Jenny Packham dress was obviously moved by the pretty little girl, who is bravely battling cancer.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part Two. Emma Watson wears Oscar de la Renta. Pictures.

By shinychris on July 8th, 2011

Emma Watson looked beautiful last night at the world premiere of the final Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part Two, in London’s Trafalgar Square.

Wearing an Oscar de La Renta dress with a grey bodice and a tiered tulle skirt, she got a little teary-eyed on the red carpet (thankfully her skirt has lots of room for a few packets of Kleenex).

Meanwhile, author JK Rowling chose a strapless rose-patterned gown from Oscar de la Renta‘s spring 2011 collection, which she accessorized with a matching pink rose pin, pink earrings, and a pink clutch.

Thousands of fans arrived in London’s West End as early as Monday evening for the last night screening, many of them dressed as characters from the films with others waving placards reading ‘Potter ’till I die’.

Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the movies, said she felt Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were ‘like my brothers’ and said they were ‘scheming’ to work together again.

Paris Haute Couture Week: Elie Saab

Elie Saab Haute Couture 2011

Lebanese-originated fashion house Elie Saab has been a red-carpet hit with the likes of  young lovelies such as Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart for a while now, so we were looking forward to see what they were going to show us at Couture Week yesterday in Paris. Were we surprised when we weren’t let down? No, not at all – this was always going to be a good show.

It wasn’t a drastic departure from the label’s past collections, which have always been well-known for their fluttery, girlie designs in icy pastel shades. But while in the past some collections have been very “sugar, spice and everything nice”, we found yesterday’s offering a little more simple and sophisticated than past efforts. The whole affair was extremely pretty, with crystal and flower details trailing over sheer sleeves, hemlines and necklines in nude and white sheer fabrics.

The textiles used in the designs worked beautifully within the collection. Rich-looking cream lace and sheer wisps of chiffon were delicately embroidered with tiny flowers and leaves and encrusted with sparkles, with a resulting effect that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a fairytale.

It’s a big round of applause for Elie Saab from us at ShinyStyle. We guarantee this collection is going to be loved by red carpet attendees everywhere.

Paris Haute Couture Week: Givenchy

Givenchy Haute Couture 2011

It’s indisputable that one of the best moments of Paris Haute Couture Week has to be yesterday’s transcendent Givenchy show. Creative direction Riccardo Tisci had certainly pulled a white rabbit out of his hat for this truly magical, delicate show which was glorious against the backdrop of the River Seine in Paris. Tisci has a great history of powerful and impressive designs but nothing prepared me for yesterday’s collection, which, without sounding too gushing, took my breath away.

It was a smaller display of work than some of the other shows this week, with only ten dresses making up the collection. Normally we’d feel a little short-changed, but in Givenchy’s case yesterday less was definitely more. In each dress you could see the care and love of design that had gone into its’ creation.

The collection, in all its’ virginal beauty, was an interesting combination of simplicity and intricacy. The garments, which were a mix of trailing fringe, wisps of sheer white chiffon and heavy embellishment and embroidery, still seemed light and delicate despite the intricate detailing. To sum it up, completely exquisite. Yesterday the models selected to walk for the show could have been angels. Particularly spectacular was the show’s finale dress: gold fringing falling in columns to the floor from metallic winged detail around the hips, below nude fabric showing the model’s body. Like we said, angelic and fit for a goddess.

To us, yesterday’s show seemed to be a true celebration of the art of couture. Tisci seems to only go from strength to strength as a designer. We absolutely can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for us the next time Fashion Week rolls around.

Gemma Arterton says it’s hard to find clothes that suit her curvy figure

By Andrea Petrou on July 7th, 2011

Gemma Arterton says it’s hard to find clothes that suit her curvy figure.

The stunning actress admits she sometimes struggles to find outfits that flatter her hourglass body and can’t just wear anything so often relies on Italian fashion house Gucci.

She said: “My shape means I can’t throw on an outfit. Gucci tends to design best for my hourglass figure.”

Gemma is also a fan of tailored jackets as they go with any outfit.

She told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “I wear my tailored jackets to death – Armani, Givenchy and Margiela.”

As well as wearing certain clothes, Gemma also sticks to the same perfume and make-up.

She said: “I do love a red lip – Nars Jungle Red is my favourite.

“My scents always have hints of Jasmine. Right now, it’s Balenciaga Paris – it’s floral, light and musky.”

Gemma has previously admitted she likes to keep her style simple.

She said: “For me it’s kind of simple really. I don’t really go for anything too embellished or fancy or frilly or girly and it has to be easy because I haven’t got time for anything that’s too difficult!

“I just like putting on a pair jeans and jacket and going, although I do like heels – I’ve got a passion for shoes, but I always end up wearing the one same pair of shoes. But it works with my lifestyle because I’m always running around so it doesn’t work for me to wear tight skirts and corsets, or whatever it is! Jeans are definitely the way forward.”

Paris Haute Couture Week: Jean-Paul Gaultier

By emilyborrett on July 7th, 2011

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture 2011

Picture 1 of 20
Picture 1 of 20

Paris Couture Week is one of my absolute favourite fashion events out of the entire calendar, so I was excited this morning to pore over Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest sumptuous couture offering. There are certain boxes at a Gaultier show that are always going to be ticked – nipped waists, leather, black PVC, feathers and embellishment – but still the iconic house managed to surprise us anyway.

There was an obvious dance inspiration to this summer’s couture collection, as Gaultier combined full-skirted suits and pert tutu-esque garments with softly elegant ballet slippers. We duly noted that even the models’ sky-high wedges were worn with criss-crossed ribbon details around the ankles for a balletic feel. Perhaps the designer has been watching Black Swan a lot lately? Anyway, we loved the dance influences and were particularly charmed by a bell-sleeved black velvet biker-feel jacket with a light-as-air chiffon and feather tutu, which was modelled by the kittenish supermodel Sasha Pivovarova.

Another vibe that we picked up on in this show was that of the wicked stepmother. Scarlet-belted leather coats with fur collars, fiercely angular feather fascinators and vintage-style costume jewellery were all part of a vibe that we reckon Cruella DeVille would have been majorly into if she had been in Paris yesterday. Our number-one total favourite moment from the entire show was a particularly cruel-looking coat/dress made out of shredded strips of plastic and leather, that on closer inspection had a black plastic fox peeping out from the strips. Just like the fox-fur scarves your mad granny wore thirty years ago, except it’s MADE OF PVC. I always knew that “mentally ill heiress” had scope to make a comeback, and I was right. HA.

All of our favourite Gaultier touches had been added to each piece. Some leather detailing here, a plumage of tropical feathers there, shredding and draping and corsetry, oh my! The result was very dark with a slightly cruel edge and we really hope no plastic foxes or birds were harmed in the making of this collection, but basically the whole thing was very fabulous and very Paris Couture Week.

White Fairy Tale ball: Anne Hathaway, Eva Herzigova and Olivia Palermo

By Andrea Petrou on July 7th, 2011

It was a white night yesterday as celebrities and models descended on the White Fairy Tale Ball at the Chateau De Wideville in Paris.

The event, which coincides with Paris Haute Couture week, was set up by Valentino and Natalia Vodianova as part of the Naked Heart Foundation charity.

It enticed Anne Hathaway who looked stunning in an ethereal long frock with a floral headpiece, while Olivia Palermo went for a silver woven white dress for the event.

Although she didn’t keep in with the white theme Eva Herzigova looked lovely in a sleek black dress, while Natalia Vodianova also decided to stand out in a gorgeous red dress.
