As Jessica Alba becomes a mum for the second time, we look at her effortless maternity style

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

At the CFDA Fashion Awards Jessica wore a bump-skimming maxi dress in lilac and peach. We're obsessed with this maxi - answers on a postcard for where we can find it, please

Earlier today we reported that one of our favourite celebrity mummas, Jessica Alba, had finally given birth to her second daughter – congrats to her etc etc – and in tribute to one of our most beautiful and stylish heroes, we’re taking a look over her mum-to-be style over the past few months.

Jessica has taken on the challenge of fashionably dressing a bump with determination, and we think she totally succeeded. Pregnant ladies, take note of how the actress teamed floaty, comfortable maxi dresses with costume jewellery and hippy-inspired hair for a beautifully effortless look. We particularly loved her outfit at the 2011 Costume Institute Benefit Gala (a place where we can imagine baby bumps aren’t exactly en vogue), where she teamed a gorgeous floor-skimming silver chiffon gown with romantic, soft hair for a look that was pure Midsummer Night’s Dream.

We’ve put together a gallery of Jessica’s best maternity outfits, which you can see above. The best dressed mum in Hollywood? Oh, we think so.

Asos Marketplace highlight: Poppy Valentine

Floral Betty Draper Dress

We’re massive fans of the relatively new Asos Marketplace here at ShinyStyle, where young independent fashion and jewellery designers can have a platform to showcase and sell their work. Today it’s pin-curls and court heels at the ready for Poppy Valentine, the vintage-inspired independent label we’ve just discovered that specialises in 40s and 50s designs.

The high street is brilliant for vintage-style pieces, but sometimes you just can’t beat a handmade piece made from genuine vintage fabrics where a lot of love and care has gone into the garment – and that’s what Poppy Valentine is all about.

Our personal favourite design from the collection is their 40s-style wrap dress, which comes in a variety of different prints and isn’t completely unlike the kind of thing Miu Miu has been making lately. They’re completely elegant and perfect for channelling your inner Dita Von Teese with some coiffed hair and red lipstick.

Check out the gallery above to see Poppy Valentine’s designs – just one of many good reasons why you should give Asos Marketplace a go.

Spotted: Rose McGowan, Kristin Bell, Tyra Banks and Chloe Moretz

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Chloe Moretz suddenly looks extremely grown-up in this rainbow and lace tea dress - we love her new ice-blonde hair too

Picture 1 of 7
Picture 1 of 7

We couldn’t quite believe our eyes when we were browsing the latest showbiz photos and came across a picture of the young Kick-Ass actress Chloe Moretz, at a photocall in London, looking suddenly incredibly grown-up and sophisticated in a rainbow abstract-printed dress with a teased Bardot updo and simple black sandal heels. When did this actress become so on-trend? We’re keeping a definite eye out for this girl from now on.

Also spotted in London was our favourite X Factor singer Alexandra Burke, who was at a promotional event for the new season of the show, looking sassy and girlish in a navy-blue day dress with seventies-style brown heels and stacked bangles. We love that she contrasted the dark blue of her dress with electric blue nail varnish – it’s all about the little details, as Alexandra knows.

Meanwhile, in Hollywood it was the 2011 Do Something Awards, and we spotted a few famous faces in attendance. Our favourite Charmed actress Rose McGowan, who’s always been famous for her sex appeal, showed off her classic hourglass figure in an incredibly tight wiggle dress in an on-trend star print. The dress teamed with vintage curls and old-Hollywood makeup gave the look a pin-up feel. Kim Kardashian was also there (she’s EVERYWHERE at the moment) showing off her dynamic curves in a very elegant and sleek silvery-blue gown, cinched in at the waist with a metal belt.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Kristin Bell looked cool in an edgy one-shouldered black and silver dress with chain details, with was softened by girly waved hair and heels, while Demi Lovato opted for a simple white corset dress with peep-toe heels.

The bad outfit of the day award goes to Tyra Banks, who was wearing an eye-wateringly bad ensemble of bright pink, green and blue all shoved into one horrible jumpsuit. Basically, Tyra my love, leave colour-blocking to the experts. You look mental.

Kate Moss falls out with her neighbours over re-vamping her house

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Kate Moss may be the UK’s fashion national treasure and one of this year’s most beautiful brides (sorry, who’s Kate Middleton?) but she sure knows how to get on the nerves of her neighbours.

In the past she’s been reputed to have driven people crazy in her Cotswolds home with banging parties and loud rock and roll playing throughout the night – and now it seems she’s angering people again as she plans to install a heavy CCTV security system around the North London home that she shares with Jamie Hince

We get that a very famous lady needs a teensy bit more security around their big fancy palace than the average nobody, but it seems that Mossy might have to compromise as the locals don’t want to back down over this.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “Kate is giving her house a makeover, but locals are unhappy with her plans to install so much CCTV. She was hoping to move in soon, but it looks like she’s going to have a fight with the council planners and neighbours first.”

Camden council have already received complaints about the CCTV plans – looks like it’s going to be HANDBAGS AT DAWN as Kate takes on the council. Fight!

Jessica Alba has become a mummy for the second time

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Congratulations to Momma Alba! The Spy Kids actress, who’s been breathtakingly pregnant for a while now, finally gave birth on Saturday to her new baby girl.

The new baby, who’s been named Haven Garner, will join her three-year-old sister Honor in the Warren/Alba clan. Jessica announced Haven’s arrival on her Facebook page: “She was born on Saturday, weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 inches long. Healthy and happy! Big sister Honor couldn’t be more excited about the new addition to our family. Thank you for all of your support during my pregnancy. It means the world to me.” Aw,  you’re welcome.

Haven’s arrival into the world has been long-awaited – before the birth Jessica spoke about the new addition to the family and about how excited she was. “The idea of loving someone as much as I love Honor is something I haven’t wrapped my head around yet. But I know I will and I can’t wait. As a mother carrying a baby we get to bond while the baby is growing – reaching each milestone, feeling hiccups, kicks, rolling around. It’s the blessing I think we get for all the round-ligament pain, sciatic pain and frequent trips to the bathroom.”

We love a new celebrity baby – congrats again to Jessica Alba and her hubby Cash Warren.

Josephine De La Baume finds Agent Provocateur undies “empowering”

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Josephine De La Baume has spoken out about her experience fronting an Agent Provocateur campaign – and the French superbeauty loved it.

Josephine, who is an actress/model and also the gorgeous fiancée of Mark Ronson, found that doing the raunchy AP photoshoot made her feel sexy, powered and confident, as she felt that the lingerie that she modelled showed off the best parts of her figure.

She said: “I worked closely with Johan Renck, the director, so it felt like a collaboration. People say these brands objectify women, but I think Agent Provocateur is empowering. The clothes help you to carry your body with pride.”

I’d like to feel empowered with a little help from Agent Provocateur, but I can’t even afford a G-string from there – lucky old Josephine probably got to keep lots of knickers from the shoot. Looks like it’s empowered in Primark for me then..

Kate Hudson’s new jewellery line reflects her personality

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

Kate Hudson’s new jewellery line is said to reflect the actress’ light, carefree personality.

The blonde surfer-girl actress, who is famed for her hippyish bohemian style, has collaborated with her friend Laurie Lee Stark to create the new line “CK+KH”, which specialises in jewellery charms and accessories.

Laurie told Elle magazine: “We use a lot of aquamarines because Kate loves them. But to me they also evoke her personality. She’s so open and light.”

The design duo also have Kate’s famous mother, Goldie Hawn, to thank, as Kate has admitted her iconic mother inspired her own tastes. She confessed that her love for jewellery was sparked as a child when she saw Goldie wearing a particular choker necklace.

Kate said: “It was one of the first pieces I ever remember my mother wearing, and it was like, ‘Wow, I hope one day I get to wear jewellery like that’.”

For art’s sake – destinations with an aesthetic edge

By shinychris on August 15th, 2011

Duomo Santa Maria del fiore and house's red roofs at dusk, Florence

Sponsored post

There are a few cities and galleries in the world that would probably be at the top of an art lover’s wish list to visit if they had the chance. One of the most obvious choices would perhaps be The Louvre in Paris. Not only is it the most visited art museum in the world, but also one of Paris’ most famous landmarks. Tourists from all over the world flock there every year to see Leonardo da Vinci‘s Mona Lisa, amongst many other prolific works of art.

Also on the list would perhaps be The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate galleries in London – renowned for their share of important collections. But if you’re looking for other destinations to visit with a rich artistic heritage, and have a real love of art, where else could you go to feed your interest?

Muralists in Mexico City

Unlike many important collections around the world, Mexico City’s most famous paintings are not housed in galleries and museums, but instead painted directly onto the fabric of public buildings – completed as part of the Mexican muralist movement.

The government buildings are a living work of art, thanks to artists such as Diego Rivera, who from the 1920s painted scenes from a socialist perspective; lampooning aspects of US society, while celebrating 20th Century and indigenous Mexican culture in colourful and striking frescoes.

The suburb of Coyoacán also has the Blue House museum – the home of Rivera’s celebrated artist wife, Frida Kahlo.

St Petersburg splendours

With some three million items in total, including what is said to be the largest collection of art in the world, the State Hermitage is one of the planet’s greatest museums. Founded almost 250 years ago by Catherine the Great, the gilded buildings house a treasure trove – including a huge collection of Western European art alongside Russian painters such as Repin.

However, St Petersburg – the traditional seat of both the tsars and the Russian Revolution – is another city where art seems to thrive on the streets, with its remarkable blend of architecture and the open-air wonderland of statues. These include the monumental ‘Bronze Horseman’ statue of Peter the Great, and the satirical version of portly unloved Tsar Alexander III sitting on a downcast horse.

Reborn in Florence

Widely considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is another city where art surrounds you. From the forefathers of the Renaissance such as Giotto, to brilliant sculptors like Donatello, the Florentine landscape is full of squares and statuary – such as the outdoor sculpture ‘gallery’ of the Loggias dei Lanzi – all dominated by the famous domed cupola roof by architect Brunelleschi.

Heading indoors, the world-famous Uffizi Gallery houses paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli’s much-parodied Birth of Venus, while the Academy of Fine Arts features Michelangelo’s immortal statue of David.

‘Scenes of everyday life’ in Amsterdam

Among Amsterdam’s many tourist attractions are some real gems for art lovers. The magnificent Rijksmuseum is the place to go if you want to see the painting greats of the Dutch Golden Age, with important collections of Rembrandt and the non-religious genre painting of Vermeer – he of the Girl with a Pearl Earring fame.

The city also houses the world’s largest collection of works by Van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum’s main exhibition charts the creative life of the celebrated post-Impressionist, while there are also works from his contemporaries. Meanwhile, the Rembrandt House Museum shows how the artist lived for nearly 20 years after he made his name.

And if you are planning on travelling across Europe and beyond to visit the world’s most artistic cities it’s a good idea to have the appropriate travel insurance, and to buy your travel money in advance to get the best currency exchange deal.

Rumours rife that Marc Jacobs is to leave Louis Vuitton to work at Dior

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

BREAKING FASHION GOSSIP! The Brazilian website Glamurama claims to have spoken to sources close to Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, and gleaned the gossip that super-designer Marc Jacobs is hotly tipped to leave his position at Louis Vuitton to become creative director of Christian Dior

There’s been an awful lot of speculation over who would take over Christian Dior following John Galliano’s disgracing – Azzedine Alaia and Riccardo Tisci have both been considered – but we have to say the idea of Arnault encouraging Marc to take over Dior is an incredibly exciting thought.

The site claims: “The two have met often in recent weeks to discuss the matter. Jacobs, the current creative director of Louis Vuitton, renewed his contract with LVMH in January – and it is possible for him to continue in his current position even if he takes over Dior. More likely, however, is that he’ll end up choosing between one of two. Arnault would prefer him to go to Dior – as the billionaire sees it; Jacobs image will only be good for the fashion house, which was considerably shaken by the Galliano scandal.”

As we all know, the position of creative director at Christian Dior has been standing empty ever since John Galliano made an unfortunate racist slur in Paris. We’ve been absolutely dying to find out which direction the iconic fashion house will be taken in, and who will take it there. Hopefully it won’t be long now until we find out.

Marc Jacobs for Dior? Who knows. Watch this space..

Trend Alert: Brothel creeper shoes

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

Brothel creepers were all over the catwalk this season

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

They used to solely be the footwear of Camden goths and cyber-clubbers, but bizarrely brothel-creepers are the only shoe to be seen in this season if you’re a close follower of hipster fashion. We’ve seen quirky London girls Pixie Geldof and Agyness Deyn wearing them – and now even Katy Perry is getting in on the act, as she’s been spotted in a posh pair of punk-style creepers by Jeffrey Campbell.

Dolce & Gabbana’s excellently slick androgynous trend has had us all suddenly getting complete shoe-lust for creeper styles. It seems now that girly, delicate styles are out, and masculine, tough footwear is in. In the past brothel-creepers have been dauntingly unwearable, unless you’re a fifteen year-old girl in a tutu and a Marilyn Manson T-shirt. but now designers are teaming the shoe with long, tailored cigarette pants and sharp-collared blouses. They’re not all decorated with cobwebs and spiders anymore either, thanks to the likes of Asos who have created the “Monroe” creeper which comes in both patent pink and silver metallic. J’adore!

The bravest of the brave have been wearing these shoes with absolutely everything, to mixed receptions, but we think there is definitely an easy way to rock this shoe. All you need is a sharp pair of creepers (plain black ones are classic if you’re not feeling brave) with tapered trousers, a high-necked blouse and an elegant draped blazer. Just add some muted makeup with slicked-back hair and you’ve got a look fit for Fashion Week.

Check out our favourite brothel creeper shoes in the gallery above.

Trend Alert: Blouses

Nishe Jewel Pussybow Blouse

Picture 1 of 10
Picture 1 of 10

We love this opulent jewel-printed blouse - so on trend! Wear with a maxi skirt and some huge earrings for a dramatic look. Find it Asos.

One of the absolute staples that you will definitely need this autumn is one of my favourites: the blouse. Pussybow, sheer, printed or oversized – they’re absolutely key for your Autumn/Winter wardrobe. Pick the right one and it’ll see you the whole way through to the next year.

Marc Jacobs, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Jonathan Saunders all included feminine, old-fashioned blouses that walked the line between austere and sexy in their collections. We were especially big fans of Jonathan Saunders’ jewel-coloured silk high-necked blouses, which, teamed with a skinny pencil skirt and heels, were glorious. If you want to kill two trends with one stone then opt for one in an unusual, quirky print, as pattern and shape are the two absolute key words for this season.

Our favourites? Personally, I’m a big fan of American Apparel’s illustration-print blouses and Topshop’s quirky 60s pastel-pink blouse with a peter pan collar (you know how I’m a sucker for anything disgustingly retro). Check out the gallery for our favourite blouses from the high street.

Kate Moss’ wedding to Jamie Hince was inspired by gypsies

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

We all pored over the photos of Kate Moss’ long-awaited marriage to Kills rocker Jamie Hince last month – and now the supermodel has revealed that her inspiration behind the big day was her favourite TV show, “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding”.

The Channel 4 programme, which is all anyone could talk about when it was on telly, apparently mesmerised our Mossy with its lavish nuptials and wedding dresses so big that the brides couldn’t fit through the door.

She told the September edition of Vogue magazine: “I am so romantic about gypsies. You can’t believe the dresses. They’re like blinging butterflies times ten; they can’t move down the aisle! It’s so genius.”

The model’s version was a far more English and pretty affair, however, with a stunning beaded gown designed by John Galliano and bridesmaids wearing floaty white gowns with garlanded hair. We still kind of wish Kate had gone properly all-out on the traveller theme – a fluorescent pink puffbal gown with animated fairylights and butterflies, perhaps?

Donna Karan Autumn/Winter 2011

I’m a very happy bunny right now, as one of my absolute favourite looks is going to be totally massive this season – and that is full on old Hollywood detective-movie 1940s glamour, complete with jewels and furs. Today I’m concentrating on the jewels – some beautiful antique-look costume jewellery can make even the simplest of outfits glamorous and on-trend.
Designers such as Gucci, Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs were all over the look on the catwalk, teaming sumptuous furs and nipped-at-the-waist tweed with darkly glittering gems and jewels to match the models’ lips. For costume jewellery, I’m a massive fan of the site GlitzySecrets, whose jewellery designs look like they should cost a thousand pounds per piece – but they don’t, as you can get a piece of timeless vintage-inspired jewellery for £15.
Whether you’re a lover or not of a head-to-toe vintage look, it doesn’t matter as some simple 1940s-style costume jewellery can make a simple black maxi dress or a skirt and top look dramatic – and make an outfit look a lot more expensive than it actually is. Along with GlitzySecret’s beautiful jewellery, it’s also worth checking charity shops as they often sell lovely second-hand pieces.
Check out the gallery above for our favourite bits and bobs from GlitzySecrets.

Freida Pinto loves Chanel for “believing” in her

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

The Slumdog Millionaire beauty Freida Pinto says she is incredibly grateful for the fashion house Chanel’s support early on in her career.

The iconic fashion house was the first to lend her couture and pieces from their current collections for her red-carpet appearances, even when she was just a little-known actress beginning her career.

Freida said: “I tell you why I like Chanel so much; when I started off, no one wanted to give me clothes to wear. Absolutely no one. All the labels said, ‘Who is she?’ Modelling was not completely satisfying. But Chanel believed in me from the very beginning. For the very first red carpet I did at the Toronto Film Festival in 2008, they dressed me up in their very current season collection. It’s a massive brand, why would they invest in someone who is nobody?”

Lucky Freida has since struck up a friendship with Chanel’s director, Karl Lagerfeld, who has had a big influence over her dress sense. She said: “I always have a good time with Karl because he’s so appreciative and wants me to try different things.”

We wish Chanel would believe in us.. go on Karl, lend us some dresses.

Lara Stone never planned to become a model

By emilyborrett on August 11th, 2011

The supermodel Lara Stone has confessed that modelling was never her ambition when she was growing up.

Lara said that as a child she never thought that modelling could be an “actual job”, planning instead as a little girl to become a stay-at-home mother. We bet if Lara’s younger self could see her now, fronting campaigns for Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Givenchy, she’d be staggered.

She said: “Modelling wasn’t on my radar at all. I remember looking at all those amazing photos of Kate Moss but at first I didn’t realise it was an actual job. I came from a standard family – my mum was a stay-at-home mum and my dad worked. So you think that’s what your life is going to be; meet a nice man, get married and have some babies. I know when I was younger I wanted to do tonnes of different jobs. I used to come up with these crazy jobs to try and provoke my parents but they said you can be anything you want. I was like, ‘I want to be a garbage man’ and they were like, ‘That’s OK, we still love you!’”

We’re so glad Lara realised her ambition – she’s one of our favourite models.
