Emma Stone bags a Revlon contract

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

The actress Emma Stone, along with Cowboys and Aliens star Olivia Wilde, is set to become the next global ambassador for the iconic cosmetics brand, Revlon.

You won’t see our favourite American redhead as the face of Revlon until 2012, but when the campaigns finally hit, her face along with Olivia’s will be all over magazines, TV and the internet.

Previous women to have represented Revlon include Kate Moss, Jessica Biel and Halle Berry – so we hope Emma is feeling pretty good about herself right now.

Gucci Westman, the artistic director of Revlon, explained the brand’s new choice of ambassador: “Both embody strength, beauty and femininity. Emma is so classic in a Grace Kelly real movie star way and she is an amazing actress as well. Olivia has the most unbelievably beautiful eyes and she is also cool and intelligent. I cannot wait for everyone to see our new Revlon campaigns.”

Neither can we!

Top 10 ankle boots for Autumn/Winter

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

See by Chloe Fringed Buckle Ankle Boots

Picture 1 of 10

These boots are expensive but worth the money if you can afford it - wear with a 90s sundress and shades for a cool New York look. They're sold at Urban Outfitters.

The one thing I’m desperate to get my hands on for the next season is a really great pair of ankle boots; I’ve been wearing the same brown leather chelseas for the past two years and they have quite literally fallen to bits. But thanks to boot-lovers like Alexa Chung, the trend is alive and well and there are some really gorgeous pairs on the high street.

What I love about ankle boots is their absolute versatility. A black patent pair or some brogue-style boots with a cuban heel can be worn during the day with a pretty tea dress or skinny jeans, but also worn with a mini-dress in the evening for a cool and youthful party look.

My absolute wishlist pair are the See by Chloe ankle boots on the Urban Outfitters site, made out of contrasting tan and dark brown leather with fringing and buckle details. Unfortunately they are incredibly expensive -so I think I’ll have to settle for a studded pair from Topshop (it’s a hard life).

Check out the gallery above for our top 10 ankle boot picks.

Spotted: Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Kylie Minogue and Anne Hathaway

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

At the première of "The Help", Emma Stone opted for a beautifully girly drop-waisted 1920s dress in soft pink

While we try to forget all the scary stuff that is happening in the UK at the moment, celebrities over the pond have been carrying on as usual. God bless ‘em.

At the world première of new film “The Help”, the Easy-A actress Emma Stone looked beautiful and serene in a very feminine mauvey-pink 1920s drop-waisted dress with nude satin heels and an old-school Hollywood white chain purse. Emma is seriously our beauty crush right now, so it’s no wonder she’s just been snapped up by Revlon.

Meanwhile at the “One Day” première, we spotted our favourite actress Anne Hathaway looking pretty and simple in a black taffeta prom dress with beautiful gold shimmer detailing around the neckline. The understated make-up and loose hair went perfectly with the look. Also there was the supermodel Coco Rocha, who was rocking 70s glamour in a white and silvery-grey strapless maxi with huge Halston-style diamond earrings.

Snapped by the paps in Manhattan was our favourite celebrity wife, Katie Holmes, looking impeccable in the most perfect pair of jeans (we suspect J Brands) with a slouchy white T-shirt and nude patent heels. We loved her vintage wavy hair, too. Zoe Saldana was rocking a tough utility look in LA, wearing a ruched khaki miniskirt with grey wedges and aviator heels. We love!

Also spotted was Ashley Tisdale coming out of a salon in LA, toting not one but TWO giant handbags, swishing her incredibly blonde and tousled hair about and looking cool in pale-blue skinny jeans and a cable knit sweater.

And finally, not everyone is terrified and miserable in England, as some celebs rocked up to the West End in Piccadilly Circus to see the new “Ghost” musical. Kylie Minogue was there (we’ve just done a piece on the daring clashing animal-print outfit she wore – check the site to see) and so was the Saturdays’ Rochelle, who looked sexy and polished in a pale grey-blue bandage dress. Herve Leger perhaps?

Check out the gallery to see who we’ve been spotting.

Steal her style: Kylie’s walk on the wild side in Piccadilly Circus

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

Kylie Minogue had some major growl power in contrasting leopardprints - a brave look

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

As a dedicated follower of celebrity style, I was surprised yesterday to see Kylie Minogue in London’s Piccadilly Circus looking like a proper bad-girl with in a leopard-print shift dress with a contrasting animal-print bag, completed with a saucy pair of black stilettos. Goodness, it’s like Michael Hutchence all over again, no?

Others have been a little unsure so far about Kylie’s bold choice to clash her animal prints, but we’re actually quite impressed. After all, this season is going to be all about a mad, clashing hotpotch of textiles and prints – Kylie’s just getting in on the trend early.

If you want to try cramming in as much animal print into your outfit as possible (and we have found some of our favourite leopard-printed beauties on the high street in the gallery above), the only thing you need to remember is SIMPLICITY. No heavy jewellery, no over-accessorising and no big hair. Otherwise we’ll have a whole nation full of Pat Butchers on our hands.

Mel C slams Rihanna for being too sexual

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

The former Spice Girl, Mel C or “Sporty” as those born in the 90s will fondly remember her, has spoken out against Rihanna, criticising her for overtly sexual music videos and stage performances.

Sporty, who has a two-year old daughter called Scarlet, is getting more and more worried about how sexual today’s media is and particularly about the “S&M” singer’s very sexual performances.

Mel said to the Daily Mirror, “People have to take some responsibility because we’ve got to a point where the over-sexualisation of young children has gone too far. I think music is a big part of that. Women in music are extremely sexual and they have young fans. It is inappropriate. Rihanna has a responsibility and although culture’s always changing, it’s changed too much. It needs to be dealt with. It’s reached saturation point, we owe it to our kids to protect them.”

She continued that she believes some of Ri-Ri’s artistic decisions are down to the fact that she doesn’t have any children herself, saying, “I love Rihanna, I think she’s a f***ing brilliant artist, with great songs, a great record and she looks fantastic … but she’s not a mum. Maybe if she becomes one she’ll feel different. I hope so anyway.”

We would quite like to see a music video with Rihanna being less sexy and more normal too. Maybe Ri-Ri wearing her nan’s cardigan, watching Take Me Out in a T-shirt with an egg stain on it. No?

An “emotionally thin” Lady Gaga wears her heart on her sleeve for her art

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

Our favourite bonkers hitmaker, Lady Gaga, has described herself as “emotionally thin” – for anyone as bemused as we are by that phrase, it just means vulnerable, but Gaga doesn’t like that word as it implies that she just cries all the time.

When asked in an interview what she’s come to learn about herself recently, she replied: “I learned that to be a great artist, you must be emotionally very thin. Your tears and anger and your happiness must be just under the surface of your first layer of skin. I like to say ‘emotionally thin’ because it’s much more dramatic. Vulnerable to me implies only tears.”

We really like a celebrity that we can relate to, and that isn’t afraid to wear her (mental and technicoloured) heart on her sleeve. Take care, Gaga. We love you!

Katie Holmes dresses up more when she comes to Europe

By emilyborrett on August 10th, 2011

Bless the little thing – Katie Holmes has said that she glams up far more when she’s coming over here to Europe.

The 32-year-old actress doesn’t like the idea of feeling out of place in the clothes that you’re wearing, so she makes an extra effort to dress according to which city or country she’s in.

The “Kennedys” star says she’s a huge fan of European fashion and lists MaxMara and Isobel Marant as two favourites of hers.

Katie said: “I like dressing to suit the places I travel to. So if I’m in New York, I’ll wear a little more black. In Europe I try to be extra dressed up and in LA I’m probably my most laid back. I lie to fit in.”

That’s quite sweet, actually. Thanks for making such an effort for us Europeans!

Nicole Scherzinger likes a more “grown up” look

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Singer Nicole Scherzinger has revealed that she prefers a “grown up” look when it comes to dressing herself.

Nicole, whose style trumped Cheryl Cole’s last year when she was a guest judge on the British X Factor, prefers a rock and roll image above anything else, putting together leather jackets and tough boots with lacy, girlie dresses to keep things edgy.

She said: “My style has evolved into being a little bit more grown up. It’s rock ‘n’ roll inspired, but chic. Glam rock. If I wear a lace dress I throw on a leather jacket to toughen things up, or some crazy boots. I like dresses that are sassy, but have clean lines.”

Nicole is set to be a judge on the new American version of the X Factor. We can’t wait to see what outfits she pulls out of the sparkly fashion bag for us.

Autumn/Winter Trend Alert: Polka dots

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Designers like Marc Jacobs (pictured) and Stella McCartney were all over the polka dot trends this Autumn/Winter

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

It’s a big hooray from me as one of my absolute favourite trends is back again for this Autumn/Winter – this season it is all about bold graphic prints, specifically the polka dot, as seen on the catwalks at Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney.

I love polka dots because they can be either sexy or girl-next-door depending on how they’re worn. Want to be a ’50s sex siren? Team a sheer spotted pussybow blouse with a hip-hugging pencil skirt and stilettos for a fiercely sexy look, or look for vintage-style sundresses and skirts for a look that’s girlier.

In the past polka dots have been small, dainty prints, but on the catwalks this year they’ve gotten bigger, bolder and more graphic. If you want to copy Marc Jacobs’ severe secretary style, Asos does an amazing black and white pillbox hat that is almost exactly the same as the one seen on his runway. We also love River Island’s sixties-style polka printed tunic – just team it with a jewel bright duffel coat and some sharp ankle boots for a look that’s perfectly on trend this season.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite polka-dot lovelies.

Style spotlight: Hailee Steinfeld

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Hailee looked like romantic 1950s perfection in this soft-pink full-skirted prom dress with a classic updo, at the Academy Awards this year

Picture 1 of 9
Picture 1 of 9

Is it just us here at ShinyStyle, or is all the talent in Hollywood getting younger and younger? Justin Bieber has had a film made about him when his voice hasn’t even broken yet, Willow Smith is storming the charts at age 11 and we’ve just realised that not only is the teenage True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld an amazing actress, but she’s already got a Hollywood wardrobe good enough to rival any older actress’.

We love that unlike other young girls in the limelight like Miley Cyrus, who have already gone down the vomit-inducing sexy route with tight dresses and big hair, Hailee closely follows the trends and wears what suits her. The 14-year old actress has already developed a strong sense of her own style, combining romantic cocktail dresses with fiercely high heels and vintage-inspired prim blouses and power-pencil skirts.

We especially adored her outfit that she wore to the Academy Awards this year, as she donned a gently sparkling peach chiffon 50s prom dress with nude satin peeptoe heels and an elegant updo for an outfit that wouldn’t have looked out of place at a couture gala sixty years ago.

Miu Miu are particularly fond of young Hailee – maybe it’s because she’s always spotted wearing their designs, or maybe it’s just because she’s a pretty young thing, but she’s now the face of their new campaign. Jealous? Us? Naaaah.

ShinyStyle loves: Jeffrey Campbell for Office

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

We’ve been huge fans of Jeffrey Campbell’s edgy and wildly outrageous shoe designs ever since we first clapped eyes on them on the American clothing store Nastygal.com. His often sculptural, avant-garde and loudly colourful shoes have had us coming over all funny with severe shoe lust – so we’re incredibly happy that some his designs are now being stocked specially in Office.

Pixie Geldof is already a huge fan of the JC heels that are being stocked there – and it’s not hard to see why our favourite party girl is all in a tizz over the designs, as it is a small, compact collection of edgy ankle-breakingly high platforms and stacked heels made out of sparkles, leather and velvet. Want to make your party outfit more exciting, Pixie-style? Try teaming a vampy LBD with a pair of Jeffrey Campbell’s black velvet platform-heel mary jane heels, which you can find in the gallery above, which will lend any outfit a sexy and retro twist.

We can’t say these shoes are going to be a steal, as prices are over £100 per pair. But it might be worth setting aside a little of your savings to get your mitts on a pair before they sell out, as we guarantee Jeffrey Campbell’s shoes will be a smash hit in the hit.

Check out our gallery above to see the JC heels stocked at Office.

Daisy Lowe feels most comfortable in her underwear

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Daisy Lowe has revealed that she feels the most comfortable just in her lingerie.

The model, who has worked with the likes of Pam Hogg and Agent Provocateur in the past, and is set to appear in the iconic men’s magazine Playboy in September, says sexy undies are what she feels the most comfortable in.

Daisy told Playboy magazine: “It’s flattering that men think I could be sexy. I would like it if taking my clothes off made other women feel they can do the same. I’m more comfortable in my underwear than anywhere else. You don’t have to worry about how to dress your shape. It’s just there.”

It’s a proud thing to have a normal sized woman with womanly curves like Daisy be so proud of her shape. More power to her.

Designer Elie Saab prefers celebrities, not models, to wear his designs

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

The Lebanese fashion designer, Elie Saab, has admitted that he much prefers to see actresses and celebrities wearing his designs instead of models, because they are much more like “real women”.

His collections are well known for their sparkle-encrusted feminine dresses, and have been favoured for the red carpet in the past by the likes of Emma Watson, Rihanna, Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. Saab feels that women like these “do justice” to his designs.

He explained to Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “Unlike the catwalk, where the 17-year-old models are so tall, the red carpet is like a podium for real life – it means so much more to me to see them in my dresses.”

We’re real women! Just send us a dress and we’ll wear it for you! Might have to take it up a couple of sizes though..

Rihanna has been bombarding Joe Jonas with sexy texts

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

Poor little Joe Jonas must be getting a bit hot under the collar, as it seems that naughty old Rihanna has been teasing the squeaky-clean singer with suggestive texts.

Rumours are saying that Rihanna’s been giggling over the idea of deflowering Joe since first meeting him when he collaborated with her ex Chris Brown. A source revealed: “They met when Joe did a song with Rihanna’s ex Chris Brown and recently she’s been bombarding him with raunchy text messages. She keeps laughing to her mates that she wants to take him one the wildest ride of his life.”

We can’t say we’re surprised at Ri-Ri, as it seems the “S&M” singer has had little else besides sex on her mind lately. Parents who took their children to her latest “Loud” tour were outraged by its sexually suggestive dance routines and skimpy outfits.

Joe Jonas has dated plenty of Disney tweens in the past, such as Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, but I’ve got a funny feeling that Rihanna might be more of a handful. She’ll eat him alive!

Jessica Alba’s pregnancy has made her feel like an “official” mother

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

30 year-old Spy Kids actress Jessica Alba has confessed that having a second baby on the way, following having her daughter Honor, has made her feel more like she is “officially” a mother.

Jessica has been happily decorating her nest and preparing a new nursery for the new arrival, but has intimated what she’s most excited about is the idea of expanding her family.

She said: “It feels like you’re really officially, really truly a mother when you have two kids. One kid you’re a mother for sure but two takes it to another level.” Yep, twice as much baby poo to clean up Jess! We’re only kidding – congratulations, girl.
