Scarlett Johansson was deemed too sexy to star as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

By Andrea Petrou on October 18th, 2011

Scarlett Johansson was deemed too sexy to star in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Director David Fincher decided against giving the role of main character Lisbeth Salander – who is played by Rooney Mara – to the 26-year-old beauty, despite her “great” audition, because people “can’t wait for her to take her clothes off”.

He told Vogue.com: “We flew in people from New Zealand and Swaziland and all over the place.

“Look, we saw some amazing people. Scarlett Johansson was great. It was a great audition, I’m telling you. But the thing with Scarlett is, you can’t wait for her to take her clothes off.

“I keep trying to explain this. Salander should be like E.T. If you put E.T. dolls out before anyone had seen the movie, they would say, ‘What is this little squishy thing?’ Well, you know what? When he hides under the table and he grabs the Reese’s Pieces, you love him! It has to be like that.”

Before finally casting Rooney in the role, David – who directed ‘The Social Network’, the 26-year-old stunner’s last movie – was worried he wouldn’t ever find the right actress to portray the character.

He added: “I had seen a lot of actresses. I was beginning to get to the point where I was thinking, ‘Maybe conceptually you are talking about a person who doesn’t exist’.”

Christian Louboutin says women wear heels for “seduction”

By Andrea Petrou on October 18th, 2011

Christian Louboutin believes women wear high heels because they are empowering.

The shoe designer – renowned for his use of a bright red under-sole on all of his footwear – says men and women have different attitudes to shoes, with the female sex wearing heels for “seduction” purposes.

He explained to the Sunday Times newspaper: “There is an element of seduction in shoes that doesn’t exist for men. Think about Marlene Dietrich crossing her legs – the whole attitude. The language starts with the shoe and radiates over the whole body. A woman can be sexy, charming, witty or shy with her shoes. Shoes for men are about elegance or wealth; they are not playing with the inner character.

“That’s why women are happy to wear painful shoes. For some a little discomfort is balanced by something else, which has to do with desire. You feel yourself, empower yourself, know yourself. You are aware of your body. This little act of discomfort pays off in lots of other ways.”

Christian has previously revealed he measures how good his shoes are by what they look like on a naked woman.

He said: “The ultimate must still look good when a woman is naked. The design that encapsulates my career is the Pigalle, a low-cut, high-heeled pump. It’s so subtle in that it adds something sexy to the body, but you don’t immediately know that it’s the shoe that is making the difference.”

Georgia May Jagger wants to create her own fashion label

By Andrea Petrou on October 18th, 2011

Georgia May Jagger wants her own fashion label.

The 19-year-old model – daughter of Rolling Stones legend Sir Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall – launched her successful Hudson jeans collection earlier this year and is now keen to branch out.

She told vogue.co.uk: “I’d love to do a fashion label in the future. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about maybe making a line of little dresses, so maybe one day. I’m really happy designing jeans at the moment though.”

However, before she becomes a fully fledged fashion designer, Georgia is happy studying photography at university in London.

She said: “I’ve just started the course, it’s going well so far. I’m still not sure what area of photography I’d like to get into – hopefully the course will help there. I really like doing portraits but I like taking pictures of things that are natural, like scenery too.”

When she was designing her jeans for Hudson, Georgia insisted she was heavily involved in creating the collection.

Georgia said: “My collection has a whole new cut. We are using new kinds of stretch denim fabrics exclusively developed for us which make them very comfortable.

“All the designs have skinny leg openings and are a mid-rise which is great for us shorter girls and also very flattering.”

Halloween costume ideas: The Smurfette

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Halloween is quickly coming up and time is running out to get that outfit. If you don’t want to go for that traditional cat or witch look and you’re worried that there will be too many Gleeks, then why not think about painting the town blue.

That’s right we’re talking about going as a Smurfette. The great thing about this look is that you can go as extreme or subtle as you like. Be brave and paint your body blue, or just go for some blue tights and add some blue eyeliner or shadow. Add a white dress, white shoes and hat and you’ve got a look even Miss Katy Perry would be proud of.

Karl Lagerfeld thinks Coco Chanel would have “hated” his work

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Karl Lagerfeld thinks Coco Chanel would have “hated” his work.

The flamboyant designer – who is creative director at both Fendi and Chanel – believes he has done well at the fashion house because he was given total freedom, though he doesn’t think the label’s founder would have approved of his creations.

Asked how he copes with his workload, Karl said: “I have it in my blood. When I was asked to Chanel, it was not trendy. I made something of it because I was given total freedom by the owner. What I do Coco would have hated. It’s my job to keep Chanel updated.”

Karl also admitted he often forgets work he has done in the past, but is not upset by this as he thinks it has helped with his career.

Discussing his many collaborations – including work with Coca Cola, Macy’s and Magnum – he told CNN: “I’m a walking label no? My name is Labelfeld not Lagerfeld. I have a sort of Alzheimer’s for my own work, which I think is a very good thing. Today too many people remember what they did – just forget it all and start again.”

Stella McCartney to launch eco friendly sunglasses next year

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Stella McCartney will launch a line of eco-friendly sunglasses next year.

The British designer and environmentalist – who is a vegetarian and refuses to use leather or fur in her creations – revealed the new collection will be made of more than 50 per cent natural and renewable materials.

She told WWD: “The greatest challenge was the amount of time that was spent on research and testing to get the best quality product possible with the highest performance in terms of resistance, while still maintaining the style and finish we always try to achieve.”

This is not Stella’s first sunglasses collection, she released a line in 2009 in collaboration with Luxottica and says it’s important to have fun with them.

She explained: “Women have two sets: a classic pair they’ll have forever, and a more playful pair. We’ve added that fun element to the line. ‘My mum had this mad pair with Christmas trees on them that I loved when I was little. Sunglasses are one of the only accessories that can really have a sense of humour. But you walk a fine line between looking like a complete idiot and getting it just right.”

X Factor 2011: Pics- what Tulisa, Kelly, Janet, Sophie and Misha B wore this weekend

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

It was a sad night for Tulisa yesterday as one of her groups, Nu Vibe, got sent home. However, there was nothing to cry about when it came to her weekend X Factor outfits.
The judge looked hot in a black dress with a rising hem and embroidered detailing on Saturday night, while a short while netted 50s style frock on Sunday ensured she really stood out. However, she faced fashion competition from fellow judge Kelly who wowed in a gorge red minidress by Todd Lynn on Saturday night and a stunning black dress with sheer panel detailing at the neckline, on Sunday.
And the contestants also showed they had style. Misha B went for a structured purple puff sleeved dress which really made her stand out. Also going for an outrageous look was Kitty who went for a white structured short frock while Sophie played it safe in a slinky red number. Giving a nod to the lace overlay look was Janet while Sami went for a turquoise number.

Jessie J uses Copydex glue to stick on her false eyelashes

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Jessie J uses glue on her eyes.

The ‘Price Tag’ hitmaker claims using Copydex adhesive has given her the best results with false eyelashes – though she admits it has some unwanted effects.

She said: “I use Copydex adhesive to put on my eyelashes. Everyone looks at me like I’m crazy. It smells a bit fishy but it stays put and it’s so sticky that you can reuse them.”

While Jessie hates the smell of her eyelash glue, she is a big fan of a particular hair product because of its scent.

She said: “My hair hot list includes the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette range, Bumble and Bumble and Argan oil. And I love TIGI smoothing Lusterizer – it has glitter in it and makes your hair smell like bubblegum.”

The 23-year-old star also admitted she is trying to use less make-up as she thinks she has overdone it in the past.

She told Now magazine: “My beauty resolution is to tone it down a bit. Sometimes I look at myself and think, ‘Woah there Jess.’ “

Alexa Chung’s clothes scare her

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Alexa Chung has a “terror room” of clothes.

The 27-year-old beauty spends much of her time working in the US, but back in her home in the UK she has a space so full of outfits she is scared to go near it.

She said: “‘Back in London, I had what I called a ‘terror room’. It was floor-to-floor with shipped boxes from the USA, still unpacked one year on, with clothes spilling out of them-basically, a mattress of clothes up to here. I’m worried that if it’s neatly arranged, I won’t be able to get dressed.”

However, it is not the only problem for the British star – who split with Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner earlier this year – she is also scared to take out the Mulberry bag named after her because she thinks it seems too showy.

She joked: “It just seems a bit much now, like, ‘Hey guys, guess what I’m carrying?’

Despite her clothing issues, she also has trouble with the paparazzi, especially when they catch her on a bad day.

She told Teen Vogue: “The annoying thing is that whenever I do spot a pap, I’m like, ‘Ugh! Today wasn’t a good day. Why didn’t you get me yesterday?’ “

Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne will wait a while to get married

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne are going to be engaged for “a while”.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ actress – who split from her first husband, textile heir Arun Nayar, last December, with their divorce completed in the summer – got engaged to the former cricketer earlier this month, but she admitted the pair are not going to rush into a wedding.

The 46-year-old star told You magazine: “It’s a very exciting time for me and Shane. We aren’t making any immediate plans to get married – we’re going to enjoy being engaged for a while.”

Elizabeth – who has a nine-year-old son, Damian, with former flame Steve Bing, while Shane has children Brooke, Summer and Jackson with his ex-wife Simone Callahan – said the 42-year-old sportsman makes her feel “happy” and she his glad her son gets along well with Shane’s kids.

She added: “We both want to spend more time with each other’s families, and Damian and I are looking forward to visiting Australia together in the near future.

“Shane makes me happy. We have a lot of fun together, we laugh a lot and that’s very important to me. I couldn’t put up with the ‘serious’ for too long.”

“My family and my new family with Shane and his kids are what’s important. His children are really beautiful, sweet and affectionate. They get on brilliantly with Damian, and as an only child, it’s great for him to have them around when they come to stay.

“I love having a lot of people in the house – the more the merrier.”
