Opinion: Why I’ve become addicted to second-hand clothes shops

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

I used to be a second-hand clothes snob and judged the standard of garments found in charity shops by the kind I gave away (I’m so sorry Oxfam I now realised old laddered tights are not what you expect to find in donated piles of clothes).

Although I’ve always been a Primark Princess rather than a Designer Diva I just couldn’t get my head around the idea of wearing someone else’s cast offs.

However as I grew up and became poorer (a combination of the financial climate and moving away from home) I began to think that perhaps I was too quick to judge, and over the past few years I’ve become what I can only describe as a second hand shop addict.

My addiction first began with books. However, as the thrill of finding that perfect novel for under a £1 began to wear off, I started to wonder if I could get the same feeling with the many clothes these shops stock.

I admit I was a bit squeamish with the idea of wearing someone else’s cast offs but I reasoned that it’s not really that much different from borrowing a mates top or skirt. All you need to do is run them through the wash and they’re like new.

Yes, you have to search a little bit and sometimes excuse the smell, you know the one that sometimes hits you as you walk into these shops and reminds you of your great aunt Mabel, but once you’ve got past that the world of second hand clothing really does become a wonder.

I’ve found almost new Diesel jeans for a bargain £8 as well as a range of cute highstreet tops for a mere £2. And depending on where you are you can find a range of designer delights.

Rummaging around the Hampstead branch of Oxfam I found a pair of Earl Jeans for £20 and a Gucci bag for £90, not bad considering the prices charged for these items when they’re new, and let’s face it jeans always look that bit better when they’re worn in don’t they?

But although I lusted over some of the shoes donated to these shops, I couldn’t bring myself to buy any, no matter how cheap they were, until one day I spotted a gorgeous pair of vintage 50s courts. Like a second hand version of Becky Bloomwood I knew I had to have them.

I didn’t care if the previous owner, or the twenty before her had some kind of gruesome blisters or bunions, all I could think about were how good they would look with my original vintage dress (courtesy of a British Heart Foundation store). So I bit the bullet, bought some anti bacterial footspray and became a charity Cinderella.

I know many of you will have been shopping in these stores for a while, but for those who are still charity shop snobs I advise you to give it a go.

Yes I may be shooting myself in the foot here, afterall I don’t like to have second hand rivals, but I’ll make you a deal, if you donate your old clothes I’ll make an exception for that perfect jacket being swiped from under my nose.

And lets face it, you’ll also be helping a good cause, which is better than almost anything else, except maybe that unique designer coat that’s going for “just” a fiver.

Jean Paul Gaultier thinks Anna Wintour is “monstrous”

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

US Vogue editor Anna Wintour

Jean Paul Gaultier thinks Anna Wintour is “monstrous”.

The flamboyant French designer insists he wasn’t a fan of fashion movie The Devil Wears Prada – which is thought to be based on the US Vogue editor and her offices – because he doesn’t think it was true to life.

He said: “Anna Wintour is a lot more monstrous than she is described.

“Is she a positive figure [in fashion]? She is a figure.”

Jean Paul also spoke of his sadness about John Galliano – who was recently found guilty of racist and anti-Semitic behaviour and was sacked from Dior and his eponymous label John Galliano – and what he has lost because of the incident.

He added: “I know John a little and I must say that what he does for his work shows he is not a racist.

“When you see the video you can see it is someone teasing him… John is very talented. He has done some beautiful things for Dior.

“I think it is completely sad he doesn’t have his own label anymore. I think it’s bad. There are some people who say and do terrible things and they are not even punished for it.”

X Factor judge Kelly Rowland loves wigs

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

Kelly Rowland is “in love” with wigs.

The When Love Takes Over hitmaker gets her hair-pieces custom-made and has learned over the years the styles that suit her best.

She said: “I’m in love with wigs. I get them custom-made and I have my hairstylist shape them to my head. I can go from long to short in less than a minute.

“I tried a blonde wig once and I looked like I should have been wearing a tacky dress with my legs out. I looked crazy. Even a too-light brown hair colour doesn’t work for me because it becomes the same colour as my face.”

The 30-year-old beauty also admitted she would love to shave her head one day.

She told Essence magazine: One day I’d like to cut off all my hair – really close – shaven to my head. It’s such a really beautiful look.”

Kelly rarely uses hair straighteners any more after her frequent use meant she previously burned parts of her hair off.

She said: “I never want to apply heat every day. I did that before, and lost all my edges.”

Pregnant Beyonce to design a range of maternity clothes

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

Beyonce Knowles is producing a range of maternity clothes.

The ‘Countdown’ hitmaker – who is five months pregnant with husband Jay-Z – plans to make a collection of outfits for pregnant women as part of her House of Dereon range with her mother Tina Knowles.

She said: “All I see now are clothes that are flattering on a pregnant woman. It’s been so exciting for me! I love figuring out designs that make me feel edgy and sexy while pregnant.”

However, the 30-year-old beauty admits she does not go out shopping too much and prefers to do all of her purchasing on the internet.

She added to Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “I spent too much money shopping on the internet.”

Beyonce – who also has two of her own perfumes out – recently confessed she is having trouble with her husband’s fragrances since becoming pregnant, but still loved her second scent, Pulse.

She said: “Oh I smell things differently! My nose is like, ‘doot, doot, doot’! I smell everything! It enhances it. If it smells bad, I smell it! My husband’s fragrance, his one that I always love, I hate right now. So, thank God I love this one.”

Nicola Roberts mixes her designers to achieve her look and says Henry Holland is one of her favourites

By Andrea Petrou on October 13th, 2011

Nicola Roberts doesn’t like to stick to one designer.

The flame-haired singer – who recently released her debut album ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ – believes there are a “lot” of “cool labels” and she would hate to restrict herself to a limited number of outfits.

She said: “I don’t like sticking with one person or thing, ever. There’s a lot of cool labels out there; I’m open minded enough to be a fan of many designers and make a few of their looks work for me. Regardless of how commercial or left-field they are, I respect most designers.

“In London, there’s Henry Holland; I wear loads of his stuff. What else? I love Topshop, I love Moschino in Milan, and I love Bora Aksu. The way Aksu does panelling is quite unique and threads his collections together; I appreciate when anyone can keep a motif cohesive over time.”

In addition to music, 26-year-old Nicola also has a make-up range for pale skinned people – named Dainty Doll – and she reveals she puts a lot of time into making the products right for her market.

She told Rolling Stone: “I’m always working on new ideas for it – it can take months to decide on products, then five months for them to be produced. I’m pleased people have taken us on board and support the brand. Next, we’re hoping to extend our overseas market.”

Evan Rachel Wood’s naked scenes praised by Kate Winslet

By Andrea Petrou on October 12th, 2011

Evan Rachel Wood’s first fully frontal nude scene was toasted by Kate Winslet.

The 24-year-old actress stripped off for her role in Oscar-winning HBO mini-series ‘Mildred Pierce’ and although she was going to “chicken out” her co-star Kate – a screen nudity veteran – gave her loads of encouragement and was waiting with a stiff drink once it was over.

Evan said: “Kate is one of the strongest, bravest women I’ve met. She’s so confident and is so comfortable with her body; which makes her so beautiful.

“I had to appear completely nude and I was going to chicken out, but she really put the scene and that moment into perspective and she was right. I’m so glad I did it. She was waiting with a drink for me afterwards. A toast to my first full frontal. Not that I’m in a hurry to do it again.”

The bisexual star – who dated Marilyn Manson for three years – also explained working with the likes of George Clooney and Robert Redford on films encouraged her to embrace her sexuality and stand up for what she believes in.

Speaking about the pair in an interview with Stylist magazine, she said: “Working with people like them is one of the reasons I finally came out [as bisexual] this year.

“If you’re in a position where you have the opportunity to go on record and say what you believe in and hopefully help someone, I feel like there is no reason to hide who you are.”
