Designer Christmas make up inspiration: Chanel AW 2011

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

We’re nearing both Christmas and New Year’s Eve meaning time is running out to get that make up look just right.

If you want something different but still simple then why not take some inspiration from Chanel’s AW 2011 looks.

This season the design house gave a nod to the forties – in the shape of pale lips, buns and intricate lace eye masks – whilst also giving a grungy feel thanks to heavily dark lined eyes and navy to black nails.
Take inspiration from either look or if you’re feeling brave why not combine the two together to give that fairy princess gone bad look.

See the gallery below for more inspiration.

Raf Simons to replace shamed John Galliano at Christian Dior?

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

Raf Simons is set to be named as Christian Dior’s new creative director.

The French fashion house is said to be finalising its contract with the 43-year-old Belgian designer for him to replace John Galliano.

According to WWD, the deal is yet to be agreed as they are still discussing of his start date and the finer details of his contract with Jil Sander – of which he is the currently helmer.

In September, Dior claimed they would announce the name of Galliano’s successor imminently.

Bill Gaytten, acting head of design for the label, explained the fashion house has experienced a “tough period” since the former creative director was sacked earlier this year after being accused of racism and anti-Semitism.

He said: “It’s been a tough period, but what can I say?

“My lips are sealed, but all will be revealed.”

Alexander Wang was tipped to take on the role of head designer at the company after frontrunners Haiden Ackerman, Marc Jacobs and Riccardo Tisci were ruled out.

A source close to LVMH, the parent company of Dior, explained: “For Dior, it’s a pretty tricky situation, as the three frontrunners really can’t take the job.

“Haider Ackermann is said to be ‘way too edgy’ for Dior; Marc Jacobs wanted the job a lot, but LVMH wants him to stick with Vuitton; and Riccardo Tisci simply refused, saying that he was feeling more than comfortable with the job at Givenchy. So nobody’s taking over so far.”

Kylie Minogue tries to go make-up free as often as possible

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

Kylie Minogue tries to go make-up free as often as possible.

The singer says it’s important to have a break from wearing cosmetics as it allows the skin to breath, although she admits it’s not always easy.

She said: “I often go without make-up, but these days it does depend on the paparazzi situation. They used to use camera film and weren’t so in-your-face, but now it’s just all high-definition and sometimes you just know it isn’t going to be good. My secret is a top knot and sunnies!”

Kylie says she tries to stay true to her own style and not be influenced by trends.

She told Britain’s more! magazine: “When I think of timeless style icons like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, I wonder how they would have coped with the pressure of today’s world, where very few months there’s a different trend. Somebody like Sarah Jessica Parker really inspires me. She’s a modern fashion icon.”

Fashion analysis: Little Mix vs The Spice Girls

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

We heart Little Mix but when a new girl band comes into the spotlight there’s bound to be a little bit of comparison to the leaders of this genre – The Spice Girls.
Of course the queens of girl bands have all grown up now, had babies and learnt that leopard print catsuits weren’t the best fashion choices, but their style still has a huge impact on the girl group bands, especially Little Mix who have embraced their musical ancestors’ individual style.

Unlike the Saturdays and Girls Aloud, these “little muffins” are all about eclectic fashion and although they don’t have similar tastes, all the different styles seem to mesh together and work.

However, there are differences. While the Spices dressed to reflect their “characters” – Mel C, AKA Sporty, in trackies, Posh in PVC or Baby in cute attire, Little Mix seem to just be channelling their own normal style and we’re staring to spot their trademark looks.

Jesy with her leopard print leggings, Jade with her braces and knee high socks and Perrie with her 80s look making us wonder whether this is finally a girl band allowed to choose their threads instead of conforming to a certain look.

Red carpet Christmas outfit inspiration: Rooney Mara at the Girl with the Daragon Tattoo premiere and all the style from the Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol premiere

By Andrea Petrou on December 14th, 2011

When we’re having an “I don’t know what to wear” moment one of the places we’ll have a sneaky look at is red carpet events.

They are, afterall, a mecca for best dressed celebrities who have often been given top styling advice.

If you’re still stuck with what to wear to a smart Christmas party or for New Years eve then why not take some inspiration from girl of the moment Rooney Mara who went for a stunning white fishtail frock at the London premiere of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo?

If that’s a little bit too much then Caprice showed how  effective a simple red strapless dress could be at the Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, while Talula also showed how faux fur can be stylish and keep you snug at the same event.

See the gallery below for more inspiration.

Victoria Beckham was embarrassed about her fashion pedigree when she had dinner with Marc Jacobs.

By Andrea Petrou on December 12th, 2011

Victoria Beckham at the British Fashion Awards at The Savoy in London - 28 November 2011

Victoria Beckham was embarrassed about her fashion pedigree when she had dinner with Marc Jacobs.

The former Spice Girls star – who is married to soccer star David Beckham – wasn’t always confident of her design abilities and admitted she was worried the sartorialist wouldn’t take her seriously.

She said: “We went out to dinner one night, and he said, ‘I saw that you put out a collection.’

“I felt embarrassed to tell Marc Jacobs that I – me, ex-Spice Girl, married to a footballer – was creating a fashion line.”

However, Victoria – who was recently “overwhelmed” to be presented with the Designer Brand of the Year gong at the British Fashion Awards – has since overcome her fears and now says she never worries about “proving” herself to other people.

She told America’s ELLE magazine: “People say to me, ‘Oh you’ve proved yourself to everybody…’ But that was never why I did this.

“I had a lot to prove to myself. I’m proud of myself. I’m proud of my team.

“I have to say I was not expecting to win and I was quite overwhelmed.

“I’ve never felt my heart beating so fast. I lost the ability to think or speak – my vocabulary just went out the window. It means so much to me.

“I had the most phenomenal team of people and I was up there on behalf of all of us and I really didn’t want to forget anyone. My mind was completely blank.”

Sarah Harding ashamed of stint in rehab

By Andrea Petrou on December 12th, 2011

Sarah Harding “cried hysterically” on her way to rehab.

The Girls Aloud singer felt “ashamed” and “embarrassed” about visiting a US treatment centre in October to seek help for depression and alcoholism, but it was her bandmates who first made her realise she had a problem.

She said: “The day I left for rehab, I was in such a mess. I’ve been told by those close to me that was when I hit my worst.

“I was crying hysterically. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, terrified – my emotions were all over the place.”

Speaking about seeing her bandmates Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh for dinner after a drunken previous night, she added: “I saw Nicola and Kimberley for dinner. I wasn’t in a good state at all – I was very hungover. But the first thing I wanted to do was open a bottle of wine. I know they were really worried about me.”

The blonde beauty’s drinking escalated out of control when her relationship with former fiance Tom Crane began to take a turn for the worse.

She explained to Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “Our lives had started to go in different directions without us even realising and we’d become like passing ships.

“He had his career, I had mine, and somehow they didn’t seem to marry up. As far as our future plans were concerned, I didn’t see how it would work.

“I was so down but I just tried to keep busy and, to numb myself, I was drinking more. It was my way of escaping.”

Sarah – who checked out of rehab last month – believes she has turned her life around and is confident she can cope in social situations without alcohol.

She explained: “I’ve turned 30 now and, although there will always be a bit of the rock chick in me, I’m trying to embrace my softer and more feminine side. I’ve realised I can socialise without booze.”

Amy Winehouse’s father turns her home into a shrine

By Andrea Petrou on December 12th, 2011

Amy Winehouse’s father has turned her home into a shrine.

The 27-year-old singer was found dead in her north London home in July and her father Mitch Winehouse says he still can’t bear to touch some of the items in the property because he is still haunted by her tragic death.

He said: “I can’t bring myself to move some things. Some of the stuff that she left – it’s still there, just as it was.”

Mitch says while he is struggling to come to terms with his daughter’s death, he has stopped blaming the drinking establishments she went to near her Camden home.

He said: “I used to blame places she went to, like the pubs in Camden Town, but now I don’t.”

He also wants the council to pay tribute to Amy, who battled drink and drug addictions and was found to have died from alcohol poisoning.

He told the Camden New Journal: “A daughter of my friend died and they had a bench dedicated to her outside the Roundhouse venue. I would love to do something similar for Amy because this will always be the place she loved.

“We want to ask Camden Council if we can have a bench in Camden Square or a memorial of some sort. I think everyone would be happy. The only thing that worries me is that the neighbours might not like it, and I really hope that isn’t a problem.”

Last night Amy’s first album since her death, ‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’, reached number one in the UK charts and proceeds will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The foundation was set up by Mitch in the wake of her death to help young people struggling with addiction problems.

Daisy Lowe claims she looks like “an elephant” compared to other models

By Andrea Petrou on December 12th, 2011

Daisy Lowe claims she looks like “an elephant” compared to other models.

The 22-year-old British model gets a hard time at fashion shows because of her curvy figure, but is proud she has the body of a real woman.

She said: “Being compared to all these tiny 15-year-old Russians, I look like an elephant. At shows they’re like ‘ugh’. But now I think, ‘Do you know what? I look after myself. I have boobs and I have hips and I have an arse and I have thighs. Sorry.”

Daisy also admits her boobs are so big she feels more comfortable in a sports bra than with normal chest support.

She added: “I love sports bras. They usually make my nipples very erect for some reason. My boobs are on the bigger side, so with normal bras all I want to do is take them off, but sports bras are comfy.”

Style spotlight: Florence Welch

By Elisabeth on December 9th, 2011

We all know one of the most important beauty commandments is to get enough sleep, and we do try our best to get the recommended hours each week despite living hectic lives. But it seems like Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch has another opinion altogether.

Florence says she feels ‘special’ when she realises she has stayed awake for over 24 hours and that her ‘favourite mode of being’ is having not slept. She continues: “The reason why it’s so special is because you know that it’s going to crash. As soon as you go to sleep, you know everything will be reset double and work will be double.”

This may be the case Florence, but we still do love our beauty sleep.

If Florence’s ‘sleep idea’ has anything to do with her choice of fashion we do not know, but take a look at the gallery below for some of her outfits over the past couple of years.

‘New Year’s Eve’ premiere fashion off: Jessica Biel vs. Lea Michele in Valentino

By Elisabeth on December 9th, 2011

With a star-studded cast list as ‘New Year’s Eve’ it could be difficult for the leading ladies to stand out from the crowd. One way of ensuring they get equal time in the spotlight is to give them one premiere each, which is just what director Garry Mashall did. So while Lea Michele – of  Glee fame – walked the red carpet with Ashton Kutcher in Los Angeles, Jessica Biel dazzled the crowds in New York City.

Both Lea and Jessica opted to wear a champagne coloured dress with shimmery detailing by Valentino but while Jessica chose the demure approach, Lea went for a dramatic, plunging neckline that certainly made jaws drop (including Ashton’s). Snaps for bringing out the Old Hollywood glamour, girls!

We can’t decide which one we like better, can you?
