10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Kori’s accessories dilemma

By Andrea Thatcher on December 19th, 2007

match%20bag%20and%20shoes.jpg

Okay, so this isn’t exactly an outfit. This question was more about completing your outfit. Kori asked us for a final ruling on whether or not your bag and shoes have to match. My first inclination was to just shout “No!” and I may have done so in the privacy of my office. But then I thought I should really check in with an expert, and who better than The Sak creative director Lorae Russo? After all, one of the prizes Kori could win by submitting her wardrobe question in the 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions Contest is a handbag from The Sak.

Lorae answers Kori with another question: “What works for you? Match is a relative term,” Lorae said. “Compliment and coordinate. If this is not easy, matching is a good rule. It keeps things simple and easy in a fast-paced world.”

Jimmy Choo Watson ballet flats – and a new flagship

By Andrea Thatcher on December 19th, 2007

Jimmy%20Choo%20flats.jpg

We love these Jimmy Choo Watson flats for their holiday flair and ability to live on in style throughout the year. The square toe is modern and not too angular, with dark faceted jewel accents. They almost look like rock ‘n’ roll studs. Plus, they’re only $340. That’s not bad at all for Choos. We wonder if anyone picked up a pair as a last minute Christmas present at the new Rodeo Drive flagship store that opened on Monday. West Coasters can look for more Choo stores through 2009 in locations like San Diego, Scottsdale, Las Vegas, and Seattle.

Giorgia Galassi shoes for spring

By Andrea Thatcher on December 19th, 2007

Giorgia%20Galassi%20spring.jpg

I know, I know…spring. But we’ve got to stay ahead of the curve here at Shiny, so we want to bring you what’s new and next even if it does involve showing you open toes when they would give you frostbite. Giorgia Galassi brought her own whimsical, lively personality to her spring collection with colorful floral and metallic sandals. While she took inspiration from the 60′s and 70′s and icons like Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn, she also tries to bring a modern sensibility to her designs. While the Italian designer can be a bit hard to find, you can get her designs on Shop.com.

10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Rachael’s fashion forward school outfit

By Andrea Thatcher on December 18th, 2007

Rachael%27s%20outfit.jpg

Reader Rachael Cash bemoans her long legs and lean frame that make it difficult to dress for her high school’s halls. Oh Rachael, you’ll grow into it, don’t worry. But until then, here’s an outfit that should fit your school’s dress code, won’t leave your feet hurting at the end of the day, and is still a bit fashion forward with items most of your Ohio schoolmates likely won’t have but won’t find too weird. We know you lust after European fashion, so we tried to pick items with that sort of sensibility that will still fit your high schooler’s budget.

We’ve extended the window to allow you to enter our 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions Contest and win a handbag from The Sak, a Chloe & Reese dress, or a Bruno Jamais gift certificate through the end of this week. Answers to your wardrobe questions will continue to be unveiled through the New Year when a winner will be chosen.

Continue reading for the details on Rachael’s outfit.

Kelly Killoren Bensimon: model, author, and jewelry designer

By Andrea Thatcher on December 18th, 2007

Kelly%20Bensimon.jpg

Kelly Killoren Bensimon plans to expand her Kelly for Kelly Killoren Bensimon jewelry line, currently sold exclusively at Bloomingdale’s, in the new year. The line based on vintage designs should soon be available at Scoop NYC, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor. We wonder if the current price points, $80 to $280, will start to climb as the line becomes integrated into the more luxe retailer’s selections. At left, see an owl necklace from the line sported by Bensimon at New York Fashion Week.

By Andrea Thatcher on December 18th, 2007

Marc%20guitar%20necklace.jpg

Okay, now you’re really cutting it close. But there is still thismuch time to order presents online and receive them by Christmas, plus lots of sites are encouraging you procrastinators by offering you free shipping. Here’s a few.

Bergdorf Goodman is offering free rush shipping on any order until noon tomorrow with the code RUSHBG. Our pick? This Marc Jacobs guitar watch necklace for only $150. We want it.

You have until noon Friday for Christmas delivery and free 2-day expedited shipping at CoutureCandy. You also get free gift wrapping and a free seasonal CD.

While it’s not free, RedEnvelope will upgrade your shipping to 2-business days for the price of regular ground shipping on orders over $50. The offer is good with the code ESAVEL18 until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

It’s the last day for standard shipping at Bebe where they’re pushing the “sexiest party tops ever” for only $39. You’d have to buy quite a few to get free shipping – orders have to be over $150 – but maybe that won’t be a problem.

Neiman Marcus still has free gift wrap and is now offering free 2-day shipping with the code NMHURRY, but it all ends tonight!

More deals on delivery after the jump.

By Andrea Thatcher on December 17th, 2007

best%20sellers.jpg

Accessories that sparkle are flying off the shelves this holiday season. Hmm, could it be because ShinyStyle has been so on top of this trend? Apparently we’re not the only ones who can’t take our eyes off of metallics and are bored by anything matte when dressing for a party. Some of the best sellers? Keep reading.

Stuff your stocking at Free People until Wednesday for Chirstmas delivery

By Andrea Thatcher on December 17th, 2007

Free%20people%20stocking%20stuffers.jpg

You can still order stylish stocking stuffers at Free People to get them in time for Christmas. And with the code LASTMINUTE the shipping is free, so that, you know, you can afford stocking stuffers that don’t come from CVS in the first place. We chose some sparkly bangles , $18, perfect for New Year’s Eve when all ostentatious and overbearing accessories must be dragged out and worn all at once. In the middle is the tinsel stranded headband , $24, to help your friends/sister/cool mom maintain her do in the blustry winter winds of late. And lastly a cute cozy wristlet for $38.

Bling it on with Rimistyle

By Andrea Thatcher on December 14th, 2007

rimistyle%20bling.jpg

Rimistyle thinks a lot like us when it comes to dressing up a little black dress on a budget!. While we know that skimping on accessories isn’t recommended by glossy magazine editors who say to “invest” in $700 pumps while buying your clothes at H&M, some of us will never ever have the disposable income to buy $700 pumps, even at half price. Plus, if you already have something great to wear in your closet, the quickest way to update it is with accessories, and when one of your other accessories – your wallet – is a little light, inexpensive is your only option. Rimistyle brings you these disco nights clutches for only $36, and this shining star necklace set will only set you back $22.

Shopping In Style Magazine’s December issue – not as easy as they say

By Andrea Thatcher on December 13th, 2007

shop%20instyle.jpg

If you’ve ever tried to search for items found in In Style magazine on their Web site, as I often have in the past both for purchase or feature on this site, you might have had some difficulty. Many of the items were not available online, and when you called the number offered, you would be told to check your local such and such department store in two months, or something even more vague. We hoped that InStyle.com’s new Shopping feature would fix all that, but we’re not so sure.

Usually, items from their instantstyle section where they lay out outfits for a “winter getaway” for instance (page 99 of the December issue) were most easily searchable on their site. But the first three items I tried to shop for were not to be found in the bag selection offered from the December issue: a Cole Haan bag from page 99, a Fendi clutch from page 100, or a Doo Ri Chung bag from the Designer Lust List on page 126.

10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Andrea’s budget New Year’s Eve outfit

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Andrea%20-%20budget%20outfit.jpg

No, this outfit isn’t for me. It’s for Andrea Osiek who needs a fabulous outfit for a big New Year’s Eve party. We’ll get over our jealousy that her husband takes ballroom dancing lessons with her, because she needs a low-rent get up because of medical expense (hope everything goes well!). She really doesn’t want to spend very much and wants to use pieces from her existing wardrobe, so we tried to keep some part of the ensemble basic and let others speak louder. We started with a little black dress which Andrea probably already has in her closet. If not, this one is from Isaac Mizrahi for Target and is on sale for $29.99. For the rest of the outfit, keep reading.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: floral vinyl tote from Forever 21

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

floral%20vinyl%20tote.jpg

This floral vinyl tote with braided rope drawstring and handles is $28.80 at Forever 21. What do you think? Is is trend-right for spring with the floral motif, or does it kind of look like one of those “designer trash bags” that have prints on them? Yay or Nay?

Adrienne Vittadini plans a comeback

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Adrienne%20Vittadini.jpg

While Adrienne Vittadini never really went away, there’s plenty of her bags on Endless.com for instance, she’s planning a big push to become a bigger part of the fashion industry again. After changing hands several times the brand has finally found a home with Schottenstein Stores which also owns American Eagle Outfitters and Filene’s Basement. While these retailers don’t scream high fashion, Vittadini plans a better-priced and bridge line (think bridge between affordable and not affordable). For price points and more of what to expect, keep reading.

New spring shoes from Piperlime

By Andrea Thatcher on December 11th, 2007

Spring%20shoes.jpg

Are you getting tired of tredging through rain and slush in your boots yet? I know some girls are longing for sun dresses with the first snowflake, so if you’re one of them you’ll love to check out the new spring styles at Piperlime. We’ve chosen the DRU New York Kalyca pump for $130 because we’ve been on the hunt for a feminine black and white striped pump, sort of a la Gwen Stefani. If you want something more pinup (Gwen would surely approve) then maybe you’ll prefer the Nine West Drazly 2 pump, $80. Or, if you are just screaming for flats by the time spring comes around, then go for the Corso Como Dotty at $155. We love the fun colors that could be easily dressed up.
