The stiff satin, dark hue and intricate pleating of Alicia Keys’ Armani Grammy red carpet dress are very on-trend with the fall 2008 runway shows we just witnessed. Keys went for a more covered up gown on the red carpet, changing into something a bit more revealing for her performance later. The back is clearly the star of this dress, while the front looked a bit awkward on Keys’ curves. It looks much more flattering in this photo than it did on the E! telecast (speaking of awkward).

The red carpet was yellow, fuschia and purple at the SAG awards tonight. We’re so glad to see color after so much black recently. We’ve cast our eye upon Kate Beckinsale in a lovely yellow gown designed by Italian Louisa Beccaria. Beckinsale was presenting this evening, while Sandra Oh and the cast of Grey’s Anatomy were nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Oh wore a custom made gown by a local L.A. Korean designer whose name we really can’t guess at spelling, inpsired by traditional Korean costumes. Finally, Oh’s castmate Sara Ramirez chose a stunning Angel Sanchez number.

The fashionophiles of Ugly Betty took a step away from the Mode offices to walk the red carpet at the SAG awards tonight. While Tina Fey may have beat out America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, I think these ladies took home the style honors. The Oscar nominations are out, and as for fashionistas it seems to be a case of the sophisticate and the ingenue – with Keira Knightley somewhere in the middle.
Cate Blanchett is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and also for best actress in a supporting role for I’m Not There. This is Blanchett’s fourth nomination, and she won once before in 2005 for her supporting role in The Aviator - as seen above.
